The 3D animated movie Tea Pels was released in China on July 21 and fired people’s enthusiasm in learning more about the increasingly popular tea pels-porcelain (陶瓷的)figures placed on tea trays. The followings are some typical tea pets with various forms and shapes.
Pi Xiu
Tea pets in the form of Pi Xiu -a mythical animal similar to a Chinese unicorn - are very popular among businessmen. In traditional Chinese culture, Pi Xiu, the ninth son of a dragon, can bring fortune to people. It only takes money as food and never lets it out. Moreover, it is believed that pi xiu can protect a house from evil spirits.
Three-legged toad
In Chinese myths, three-legged toads spit money from their mouth and help the poor. Thus, it has been considered a lucky animal for a long time in Chinese culture. If you’re a fan of Harry Potter series, this little toad might be a good reminder of Hogwarts and magic.
Little foot with a spider
In the shape of a little fat foot with a spider on it, this tea pet might look strange to non-Chinese speakers. In the Chinese language, spider is zhi zhu and foot zu. When the two pronunciations are combined, it would be a homophone (同音字)for “satisfied” in Chinese. It is designed to remind people of having a satisfied attitude towards life and being grateful for every little gain.
The best way to raise a tea pet is to brush it with the fresh tea you are drinking. Only use one kind of tea to pour on a tea pet, rather than many kinds. Oolong, such as Tie Guanyin, and green tea are better choices to raise a tea pet apart from Pu’er tea.
1. Why is Pi Xiu popular among businessmen
A. It takes the shape of a Chinese unicorn.
B. It costs people a lot of money to keep it.
C. It spits money from its mouth and helps the poor.
D. It brings its owners wealth and drives away bad spirits.
2. What does spider represent in the spider-themed tea pet
A. A unique symbol that attracts foreign tea lovers.
B. An insect that brings good luck to Chinese people.
C. A pronunciation that shows the hidden meaning in Chinese.
D. A reminder that people should always attempt to gain more.
3. Which is recommended as the best way to raise a tea pet
A. Green tea is better than Pu’er tea.
B. The tea you’re drinking is the best option.
C. Pu’er tea is not the preferred choice to blush a tea pet.
D. A mixture of several kinds of teas is highly recommended.
【答案】1. D 2. C 3. B

Sidney Keys,14-year-old, has started a youth-led book club program, with the support and help of his mom, to help empower both himself and many other boys with mental or physical problems through literature.
Keys’ idea to create Books N Bros was born from his own setbacks and struggles. “I used to have a really bad stutter and perform badly in school and I would get laughed at for it,” Sidney Keys, the founder of the book club Books N Bros said. “Reading was kind of my escape from my stutter because in my head I was able to imagine things and play out all the events clearly.” He said, “I wanted to start up Books N Bros so that I could talk to other people, especially boys, about books I love in a relaxing way because it’s like a brotherhood.”
The reading club that he started at just 10 years old now has over 250“bros”aged 7 to 13 from the U.S. and Canada, most of whom are changing actively and positively. Marvel’s Hero Project, which reveals the remarkable, positive change young men make in their communities across the country and turns them into superheroes, selected Keys to be featured in the Disney series.
“I always wanted to read books that had characters that looked like me, but now I see a comic book with me in it,” Keys said delightedly. “It’s really awesome, especially when I hear my friends and teachers call me my superhero name at school.”
As for the future of Books N Bros, Keys and his mom hope to expand the programs reach throughout the country. “Getting Books N Bros in schools across America, we don’t want transportation to be an issue for getting that physical brotherhood and bond. It just benefits so many people, and it keeps me going,” Keys explained.
4. What caused Sidney Keys to build Books N Bros
A. His mother’s support.
B His poor school performance.
C. His own sufferings.
D. His literature experience.
5. Why was Keys chosen by Marvel’s Hero Project
A. Because he was called a superhero by people.
B. Because he made a difference to other people.
C. Because he was brave to face his shortcomings.
D. Because he looked like a role in the Disney series.
6. How did Keys feel when seeing himself in a comic book
A. Confused. B. Curious.
C. Touched. D. Proud.
7. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Sidney Keys: a Real-life Superhero

The Atlantic salmon (鲑鱼) of Scotland are hardy and determined animals. Each spring and summer, they return from the North Atlantic Ocean to lay eggs in Scotland’s shallow rivers, leaping up waterfalls and over barriers, pushing themselves upstream in enormous efforts. Some fail, and others succeed, but today they face yet another challenge.
During the mid-1980s, there were between eight and ten million salmon swimming around Scotland’s Atlantic coast; that number has now dropped sharply. There’s evidence of reducing the availability of the salmon’s prey (猎物) as climate change warms and acidifies oceans. New research suggests climate change is also bearing down on rivers, which is bad news for salmon.Adapted to life in cold water, salmon experience slow growth and population changes at high temperatures. Heat influences their health and reduces their resistance to disease.
“Now salmon are struggling to deal with the rising temperatures. There are recent records of 27°C in the upper reaches of the Dee catchment,” says Peter Cairns, director of an environmental charity. In 2018, Scotland recorded the lowest pole catch for salmon since records began. Evidence suggests that the degraded quality of river worsens the impact of our changing climate. “Atlantic salmon evolved using river systems in Scotland that were once way more forested and therefore shaded.” Yet Scotland is today one of the least wooded countries in Europe, with just 3 percent of its native woodland undamaged. Scientists have found that just 35percent of rivers in Scotland have enough tree cover for salmon survival.
A movement to get trees back on riverbanks is gathering pace. “Broad-leaf trees close tothe bank can reduce the light that enters the water,” explains fisheries scientist Anthony Hawkins.A new initiative called Riverwoods — led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and supported by Scottish Water and several other govemment and regulatory bodies — aims to create a network of woodlands along Scotland’s riverbanks, and has already received a number of large funds.“Money is not the pressing business. River health is complex, but tree planting is one of the most basic things we can get started with right away,”says Cairns.
8. Why do Atlantic salmon make great journeys back to the rivers
A. They search for foods.
B. They reproduce themselves.
C. The rivers are relatively cool.
D. The seas are increasingly warm.
9. How do the rising temperatures in rivers affect salmon
A. They grow more quickly.
B. They are more heat-resistant.
C. They are less active in water.
D. They are more likely to get diseases.
10. What is a challenge for salmon when they return to Scotland’s rivers
A. There is a shortage of food.
B. There is much fish catching.
C. The ecology environment has changed.
D. The river systems are unsuitable for the forest growth.
11. What does Cairns really intend to tell us in the last paragraph
A. It is urgent to plant riverbank trees.
B. It is too hard to restore the river health.
C. There is enough money for the project.
D. There are too many vital things to deal with.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了因为环境恶化,大西洋鲑鱼的数量急剧减少。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Each spring and summer, they return from the North Atlantic Ocean to lay eggs in Scotland’s shallow rivers, leaping up waterfalls and over barriers, pushing themselves upstream in enormous efforts.(每年春天和夏天,它们都会从北大西洋返回,在苏格兰的浅水河流中产卵,跳过瀑布,越过障碍,以巨大的努力将自己推向上游)”可知,大西洋鲑鱼要长途跋涉回到河里是为了繁殖后代。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Heat influences their health and reduces their resistance to disease.(热影响它们的健康,降低它们对疾病的抵抗力)”可知,河流温度上升使鲑鱼更容易得病。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Evidence suggests that the degraded quality of river worsens the impact of our changing climate. “Atlantic salmon evolved using river systems in Scotland that were once way more forested and therefore shaded.” Yet Scotland is today one of the least wooded countries in Europe, with just 3 percent of its native woodland undamaged. Scientists have found that just 35percent of rivers in Scotland have enough tree cover for salmon survival.(有证据表明,河流水质的恶化加剧了气候变化的影响。“大西洋鲑鱼在苏格兰的河流系统中进化,那里曾经有更多的森林,因此有阴影。”然而,如今苏格兰是欧洲森林覆盖率最低的国家之一,只有3%的原生林地未被破坏。科学家们发现,苏格兰只有35%的河流有足够的树木覆盖,供鲑鱼生存)”可推知,当鲑鱼返回苏格兰河流时,生态环境的变化对它们来说是一个挑战。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Money is not the pressing business. River health is complex, but tree planting is one of the most basic things we can get started with right away,”says Cairns.(“钱不是紧迫的问题。河流的健康状况很复杂,但植树是我们可以马上开始做的最基本的事情之一,”凯恩斯说)”可推知,凯恩斯真正想告诉我们当务之急是种植河岸树木。故选A项。
D
The Moon is attracting much attention these days as NASA is ready for its Artemis I launch and preparing for more to follow. The mission objectives are clear: develop a sustainable presence on its surface and pave the way to go to Mars.
And then what What’s the next great leap in humans’ quest for the secrets of the universe When it comes to the near future scientific exploration, there are a few areas of the solar system that will be receiving some special attention.
First off, there’s Venus, a planet which was a relative paradise with oceans and a pleasant atmosphere. Something went terribly wrong there a few billion years ago, and NASA has scheduled a series of missions to explore what exactly is going on there.
At the other end are the gas giants. Several of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn are covered in thick sheets of ice, and underneath that ice sit oceans of liquid water. NASA has missions planned to investigate those mysterious worlds, hunting for any signs of possible life hidden deep within.
As for us humans, Mars is certainly the grand prize in the coming decades. If we have the adequate drive and funds, we can establish a semi-permanent presence on the red planet, keeping crews working and studying in person on the Martian surface. The other planets of our solar system are not so suitable for people to settle on. Mercury is too close to the Sun for comfort and too far away from the Earth.
Over the coming decades, humans expect to see a rise of “space hotels”, set up for visiting tourists and scientific explorations. Naturally, turning the space rock into a habitat for humans is not very practical considering our current level of technological maturity, but in my best estimation, it’s the next easiest thing to accomplish after the Moon and Mars, of course.
12. What does the underlined word “quest” probably mean in the second paragraph
A. Request. B. Explanation.
C. Question. D. Search.
13. Which is the least likely to be explored in the next decades according to the passage
A. Mars. B. Venus.
C. Mercury. D. Gas giants.
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards the “space hotels”
A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful.
C. Critical. D. Unconcerned.
15. What’s the passage mainly about
A. The launch of Artemis I.
B. The secrets of the solar system.
C. The missions of NASA.
D. The areas of the future universe exploration.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. D
【解析】

【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段最后一句“When it comes to the near future scientific exploration, there are a few areas of the solar system that will be receiving some special attention.(说到不久的将来的科学探索,太阳系有几个领域将受到特别关注。)”可知,此处是指对宇宙奥秘的探索,结合划线词后“for the secrets of the universe”可推知,quest意为“寻求,探求”,和search意思相近。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段最后一句“The other planets of our solar system are not so suitable for people to settle on. Mercury is too close to the Sun for comfort and too far away from the Earth.(太阳系的其他行星不太适合人类定居。水星离太阳太近了,离地球太远了。)”可推知,在未来几十年里,水星是最不可能被探索的。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句“Over the coming decades, humans expect to see a rise of “space hotels”, set up for visiting tourists and scientific explorations.(在未来的几十年里,人类有望看到“太空旅馆”的兴起,为来访的游客和科学探索而设立。)”可推知,作者对“太空旅馆”的出现充满希望。故选B。
【15题详解】

I love learning foreign languages so much that I learn a new language every two years. When people find I’m a polyglot(通晓多种语言的人),they always ask me,“How do you do that ” Honestly, my answer will be, “I don’t know. I simply love learning languages.” ____16____ They want to know why they spend years learning even one language, never achieving fluency, and what’s the secret of being polyglots.
____17____ And what do we have in common I decided to find that out. I went to several events where language lovers gather to practice their languages, asked dozens of polyglots about methods they use, and heard dozens of approaches. Everybody seems to have a unique way to speak several languages fluently.
____18____ All these polyglots talked about language learning as if it was great fun. They found ways to turn language learning from a boring subject into a pleasant daily activity. You should have seen their faces when they were showing me their colorful grammar charts and handmade flash cards. ____19____ The methods are various, but they make sure it’s something enjoyable.
I realized it’s actually how I learn. ____20____ Then interesting programs became my choice. So all is clear. If you don’t like writing words down on paper, type them in an app. If you’re a shy person, apply self-talk at home. This is how polyglots learn languages, and the best news is that it’s available to anyone willing to take the learning into their own hands.
A. How can those with little talent be fluent
B. But people are never happy with the reply.
C. There’s no shortcut to learning languages for anyone.
D. One of them even made recipes in a foreign language.
E. That made me wonder, too, how other polyglots actually do it.
F. When learning Spanish last year, I was bored with textbooks.
G. Polyglots simply found ways to enjoy the language-learning process.
【答案】16. B 17. E 18. G 19. D 20. F
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了许多人花多年学习一门语言却无法做到流利交流,他们想知道成为通晓多种语言的人的秘诀,于是作者弄清楚了一些学习外语的方法。
【16题详解】
上文“Honestly, my answer will be, ‘I don’t know. I simply love learning languages.’”(老实说,我的回答是,“我不知道。我就是喜欢学习语言。”)讲述了别人问作者怎么通晓多种语言的时候作者给出的回答,但这种回答不能解答那些人的疑问,所以他们不会对这个回答满意的。B项“但是人们从来不会对这个回答满意。”承接上文。故选B。
【17题详解】
下文“And what do we have in common ”(而且我们有什么共同点?)用And引出了另一个问题,所以空处应该也是作者的疑问。E项中的“how other polyglots actually do it”是对其他通晓多种语言的人如何做到学好外语的疑问,与下文衔接紧密。故选E。
【18题详解】
下文“All these polyglots talked about language learning as if it was great fun. They found ways to turn language learning from a boring subject into a pleasant daily activity. ”(所有这些精通多种语言的人都在谈论语言学习,好像这很有趣。他们找到了将语言学习从一个无聊的话题变成一种愉快的日常活动的方法。)讲述了这些精通多种语言的人将学习语言变成一件有趣的事情。所以G项“精通多种语言的人找到了享受语言学习过程的方法。”符合本段内容。故选G。
【19题详解】
上文“You should have seen their faces when they were showing me their colorful grammar charts and handmade flash cards.”(当他们向我展示他们五颜六色的语法表和手工制作的抽认卡时,你应该看到他们的脸。)讲述了通晓多种语言的人的一些有趣的学习方法。根据下文中的“The methods”可知,空处应是另一种有趣的学习方法。D项中的“made recipes in a foreign language”与methods照应。故选D。
【20题详解】
上文“I realized it’s actually how I learn.”(我意识到这其实是我学习的方式。)引出接下来作者具体的学习外语的方式。下文“Then interesting programs became my choice.”(然后有趣的节目成了我的选择。)

When I was eight or nine years old, I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and began to cry. “Buddy, you didn’t really write this beautiful, beautiful poem!” My mother poured out her praise. I glowed. “What time will Father be home ” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him what I had accomplished. My mother said she hoped he would be home around seven. I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for his arrival. First, I wrote the poem out in my finest flourish(花体字). Then I used colored crayon(蜡笔) to draw an elaborate border around it that would do justice to its brilliant content. Then I waited. As 7 o'clock drew near, I confidently placed it right on my father’s plate on the dining-room table.
But my father did not return at seven. I admired my father. He was head of Paramount Studios in Hollywood but he had begun his motion picture career as a writer. He would be able to appreciate this wonderful poem of mine even more than my mother.
This evening it was almost 8 o'clock when my father burst in. He was an hour late for dinner. His mood seemed thunderous. He could not sit down but circled the long dining-room table with a drink in his hand calling down terrible oath(诅咒) on his employees.
Suddenly, he paused and stared at his plate. There was a suspenseful silence. “What is this ” He was reaching for my poem. I lowered my head and stared down into my plate. I was full of anxious daydreams. How wonderful it would be if this very first work of mine drove away the angry clouds that now darkened my important father’s face.
“Ben, a wonderful thing has happened,” my mother began. “Buddy has written his first poem! And it’s beautiful.”
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to decide for myself.” Father said.
I kept my face lowered to my plate as he read that poem. It couldn’t have taken very long to read that poem. It was only ten lines. But it seemed to take hours. I could hear him dropping the poem back on the table.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Now came the moment of decision.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few years later I took a second look at the first poem, and I had to agree with my father’s judgment.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Now came the moment of decision. “I think it’s terrible,” he said. I couldn’t look up. My eyes were getting wet. “Ben, sometimes I don’t understand you,” my mother was saying. “This is just a little boy. These are the first lines of poetry he’s ever written. He needs encouragement.” “No one says Buddy has to become a poet,” my father held his ground. My father’s words hit me over the heart like a hard fist. I couldn’t stand it another second. I ran from the dining-room up to my room, threw myself on the bed and cried the worst of the disappointment out of me.
A few years later I took a second look at the first poem, and I had to agree with my father’s judgment. It was a pretty terrible poem. As I worked my way into other books and plays and films, it became clearer and clearer to me how fortunate I had been. I had a mother who said, “Buddy, did you really write this I think it’s wonderful!” and a father who shook his head and drove me to tears with, “I think it’s lousy.” In fact, every one of us in life needs that mother force and father force. Between the two poles of praise and doubt, both in the name of love, we try to follow my true course.

4 What caused Sidney Keys to build Books N Bros
A. His mother’s support.
B. His poor school performance.

B They reproduce themselves.

But my father did not return at seven I admired my father.
He could not sit down but circled the long dining-room table with a drink in his hand, calling down terrible oath(诅咒) on his employees.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Now came the moment of decision.
