Steph Clemence always intended to go to college. But life tends to throw barriers in the way. Her mother remarried several times. By the time she was a senior in high school, Steph had lived in 25 places. Her stepfather died in a car accident, leaving her mother to support three daughters on a modest income. Paying for college became out of the question.
One afternoon, Dorothy Clark, her English teacher, walked into the classroom, handing out a paper sheet titled “Mrs. Clark's Book List”,and said,“Some of you might not go on to higher education, but you can continue to learn." She created a list of 153 fiction and nonfiction books, covering science, history, economics, politics, and literature. So she began in 1970. Starting at the top, Steph would read every book in the order they appeared. A CHATBOT developed by tech company OpenAI can find and fix bugs in software just as well as standard machine learning approaches can and beats them when aided by follow-up questions. A number of tools exist that use artificial intelligence to check programming code to ensure there are no mistakes.
Dominik Sobania at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, and his colleagues sought to see how well ChatGPT could do this compared with other AI-powered coding support tools. They first asked ChatGPT to answer questions taken from the QuixBug benchmark（基准）dataset，which is a series of small but challenging programming problems. For example，they gave the AI a small snippet（代码段）of code and asked：“Does this program have a bug How do you fix it ” ChatGPT managed to correctly answer 19 out of 40 questions put to it-comparable with two other deep learning-based code fixing approaches, called CoCoNuT and Codex. That roughly 50 percent success rate was considered state-of-the-art for such tools before ChatGPT.
The researchers then utilized ChatGPT＇s conversational interface（界面）to ask follow-up questions that a user would pose if they tried to insert the corrected code into a programming tool. This approach highlighted where ChatGPT's solution was incorrect and meant that in 31 of the 40 questions, ChatGPT solved the issue. “That was really surprising, because we haven't seen it before,” says Sobania. “That's something new.” Sobania expects ChatGPT or similar systems to be adopted as an additional trouble shooting tool for programmers in the future.
This is a good idea, but human oversight is still needed, says Alan Woodward at the University of Surrey in the UK. “We don't want to rely totally on the AI as it is not errorless.”

By the year 2050, Earth's population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion people. With this growth comes a surprising demand for food resources. To find an effective way to deal with the global food safety crisis, Enter X, Alphabet Inc launched Project Mineral, which focuses on “computational agriculture”, a term to describe new technologies that will further increase understanding about the plant world.
Can a machine be taught to understand the plant world After years of work, Project Mineral leader Elliot Grant and his team＇s latest prototype（原型）-a plant-scanning robot-will turn up at the Smithsonian's “Futures” exhibition later this year. The four-wheeled plant robot, about as tall as a shipping container and as wide as a car, uses different cameras and other technologies to monitor and find possible problems with plants.
As it rolls through the farmland, it can identify weeds, and measure the ripeness of fruits. The Mineral robot can become taller to take pictures of wheat plants, or widen to scan a broad bed of crops. What's more, when the robot meets with different situations out in the field, it can accurately identify specific crops, traits or diseases.
Mineral has partnered with a farmer in the Philippines who is helping the team study diseases in bananas. Images of diseased bananas will be used to teach the robot how to detect diseases.
The robot also takes pictures of flowers and then employs the machine learning model to count a plant's flowering speed, which is crucial to understand how a plant responds to its environment and predict the yields. Besides, the robot can measure all kinds of leaf sizes and detect greenness.
Though the robot has come a long way from its origin, it's still a prototype. Mineral stresses that they're constantly improving and working closely with experts in the agricultural field to understand plants further.
