Predict what the text will be about。 27.What would be probably the content of the paragraph that follows

Good morning, students. We have an important announcement to make this morning. Mr. Jenkins, your physical education teacher, will be leaving us after 25 years at Evergreen High School. Together, we have shared many great memories here, and he is a big part of our school’s history. He led the boys’ basketball team to a championship the last two years and has also helped out with other sports programs. Although we are sad to see him go, we are happy for him, too. He has been a fantastic coach, a teacher, and more importantly, a good friend. He has told us that this decision has been very hard for him. However, his mother has become ill, and it is the right decision for his family. Unfortunately, Mr. Jenkins will not be able to end the year with us, as he is traveling back to his hometown this Friday. This means we won’t have time for a proper goodbye celebration, but we hope you will all visit him before he leaves. And finally, to show respect for our good friend, we will be naming the gymnasium “Jenkins’ Gym” at the end of the month. Taking over his duties until summer vacation will be our math teacher, Mr. Ryan. We also have a goodbye card you can sign at the office. Thank you for your attention and have a good day.

One September night a family had gathered round their fireplace. Up the chimney roared the fire, and brightened the room with its broad flames. The faces of the father and mother had a sober gladness; the children laughed; and the aged grandmother sat knitting in the warmest place. This family of mountaineers was situated in the Notch of the White Hills, where the wind was sharp throughout the year, and pitilessly cold in the winter. Not just that, but a mountain towered above their heads, so steep, that the stones would often roll down its sides and wake the whole house at midnight.
Though they lived in such a remote place, these people held daily conversation with the world. Some travelers, would pause here and pay only for food and accommodation, but meet with a homely kindness beyond all price. When the footsteps were heard, therefore, between the outer door and the inner one, the whole family rose up, grandmother, children, and all, as if about to welcome someone who belonged to them, and whose fate was linked with theirs.
The door was opened by a young man. His face at first wore the sad expression, almost hopelessness, but soon brightened up when he saw the kindly warmth of his reception. He felt his heart spring forward to meet them all, from the old woman, who wiped a chair with her apron, to the little child that held out its arms to him.
“Ah, this fire is the right thing!” cried he, “The biting wind almost froze me. But when I saw this good fire, and all your cheerful faces, I felt as if you were waiting for my arrival. So I shall sit down, and make myself at home.”
After supper, the young man talked freely, feeling himself a member of the family. He was of a proud, yet lonely spirit, so trusting others was not easy for him. However, that night, the educated youth poured out his heart before the simple mountaineers.

How are you feeling today Often when we ask people that question, they reply ‘not bad’, or ‘could be worse’. But what would make us feel ‘perfect’ Maybe we could live better by being healthier, less stressed, more motivated—but how
Of course there are many ways of improving our mental health, but sometimes there are small and simple solutions to helping improve our wellbeing. It’s something the TV programme Easy Ways to Live Well has been looking at. It suggested several ‘health hacks’ which the programme’s presenters tried and gave their ‘seal of approval’. And maybe they could help us too.
Firstly, to deal with putting on weight and to cut the calories, the programme found sniffing (嗅) peppermint (薄荷) stops our longing for a snack. Presenter, chef and writer Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall says “a scientific theory called ‘mutual competition’ shows that a strong smell can distract our brain from the food we’re thinking about.”
If your addiction to your smartphone is getting you down, it’s suggested that turning your phone screen grey helps you reduce screen time because a black and white screen becomes less attractive to look at. With recent studies showing our phones can make us 26% less productive and increase our stress, it seems like a no-brainer to try this ‘dim’ idea.
Fancy a swim in ice-cold water Well, the TV programme found a daily dip in freezing water gets you used to the stress of doing it and therefore prepares you for other life stresses. And another way to ‘chill out’ is to leave your smartphone at home, immerse yourself in a forest, and breathe in the fresh air. Forest bathing is the perfect tonic for the stresses of urban life.
Other life-improving ideas included things such as singing to reduce pain and walking around more to get away from our sedentary (久坐不动) lives. But whatever way we choose to adopt, it seems any change to our lifestyle can help improve our body and mind.
28.What’s the function of a series of questions in the first paragraph
A.To provide more background information. B.To provoke thinking and bring out the topic.
C.To expect readers can give specific answers. D.To attract readers to focus on physical health.
29.What’s the author’s attitude towards the TV programme Easy Ways to Live Well
A.Favorable. B.Unclear. C.Negative. D.Critical.
30.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage
A.The strong smell of peppermint is bound to cut the calories.
B.To remove life stresses, you must have a swim in freezing water.
C.Making the phone screen colorful makes us more focused and efficient.
D.An ice-water swim and forest bathing have the similar effect on stresses.
31.What’s the purpose of the passage
A.To tell readers how to be perfect. B.To introduce a popular TV programme.
C.To offer some ways to better well-being. D.To get rid of some bad habits in daily life.

People often call music a universal language, but do certain songs really cause the same mental images in our minds Scientists at Princeton find that while music absolutely can stimulate(激发)similar mental experiences, the results also strongly suggest culture is a major factor.
A total of 622 people took part in the study. All of the volunteers came from one of three locations: two suburban college towns in the US (one in Arkansas and the other in Michigan), or the rural Chinese village of Dimen. It’s worth noting that the main language in Dimen is Dong, a tonal language unrelated to the official language of China. Locals there have little contact with Western media or culture at all. All participants listened to the exact same 32 “musical stimuli”— which were 60-second cuts of instrumental music. Half of these pieces came from Western music while the rest came from Chinese music.
After hearing, researchers asked the groups about the images they saw in their heads while listening. Incredibly, people from Arkansas and Michigan often described very similar stories, even using the exact same words frequently. Dimen listeners, on the other hand, envisioned stories that were similar to each other but quite different from the American listeners. More specifically, one track led t o Americans seeing a cowboy in the hot desert surveying an empty town. Meanwhile, Chinese participants imagined a man in ancient times reflecting on the loss of a loved one.
“There’s something about the results that’s really surprising, especially because people encounter music in 2022 often in a solitary way, over headphones. But it turns out, it’s still a shared experience, almost like a shred dream, although not universally shared, ”says Elizabeth Margulis, the study author.
The results paint a more complex picture of music’s power. Music can generate remarkably similar stories in listeners’ minds, but it depends on a common set of cultural experiences. So while we imagine music can bring people together, the opposite can also be true-it can distinguish between sets of people with a different background or culture.
32.What is the probable reason for Dimen being selected for the study
A.Its unique cultural background. B.Its close contact with US.
C.Its complex language system. D.Its long tradition of music.
33.What were the participants required to do after listening to music
A.Exchange their comments on the scene.
B.Imagine musicians’ original inspiration.
C.Describe the picture forming in mind.
D.Recall personal music-related stories.
34.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “solitary” in paragraph 4
A.Strange. B.Individual. C.Outdated. D.Polite.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Unbelievable Music’s Effects Go beyond Cultures
B.Problem Solved! How Music Brings Us All Together
C.Amazing! Cultures Determine Our Preference for Music
D.Universal Language Culture Matters When We Hear Music
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.B 35.D

通读全文,尤其是第一段“People often call music a universal language, but do certain songs really cause the same mental images in our minds Scientists at Princeton find that while music absolutely can stimulate (激发) similar mental experiences, the results also strongly suggest culture is a major factor.(人们常说音乐是一种通用的语言,但是某些歌曲真的会在我们的脑海中产生同样的意象吗?普林斯顿大学的科学家们发现,虽然音乐绝对可以刺激类似的心理体验,但研究结果也强烈表明,文化是一个主要因素)”可知,文章主要介绍了人们常说音乐是一种通用的语言,但是普林斯顿大学的科学家们发现,虽然音乐绝对可以刺激类似的心理体验,但研究结果也强烈表明,文化是一个主要因素。由此可知,D项“通用语言?当我们听到音乐时,文化很重要”适合做文章标题。故选D。

【答案】
56.achievements 57.a 58.successfully 59.to reach或to have reached 60.which 61.starting 62.has worked 63.longer 64.was launched 65.to
故填a。
故填to reach或者to have reached。
故填which。
故填has worked。
故填was launched
固定搭配bring...(back) to...“把……带回……”。故填to。

My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the doorway. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait – and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother – we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly, he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order.
More research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean (断奶) him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon became healthy and strong. Within a few weeks he became more active. He would chatter (吱吱叫) for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels.
One night, Squirt didn’t come back to our house and it rained hard.
Paragraph 1: One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels.
At first, Squirt was hesitant, but he soon realized that they were friendly and he started to play with them. The girls and I watched in amazement as he chased them up and down the tree trunks and branches. Kaytlin was thrilled to see Squirt making friends and becoming more confident. We knew that this was a great sign and that he was ready to be on his own.
Paragraph 2: One night, Squirt didn't come back to our house and it rained hard.
We were worried about him and thought that he might have gotten lost again, but the next morning he appeared at the door, soaking wet and shivering. Kaytlin took him in and dried him off, and we all breathed a sigh of relief. Over the next few days, Squirt started coming back to visit us less and less, until finally he stopped coming altogether. Although we missed him, we knew that this was a good thing and that he was finally able to live his life in the wild, where he belonged. We will always remember the time we spent with Squirt and the lessons we learned about the importance of taking care of our wildlife.
Paragraph 1: One day in the trees, Squirt met up with a family of gray squirrels.
The family of gray squirrels was very curious about Squirt, and soon they were playing together. The girls were overjoyed to see him interacting with other squirrels. They realized that Squirt was finally ready to be on his own. They had done their job of taking care of him and now it was time to let him go. They knew that it would be hard to say goodbye to Squirt, but they also knew that it was the right thing to do.
Paragraph 2: One night, Squirt didn't come back to our house and it rained hard.
The girls were worried about Squirt when he didn't come back that night, especially since it had rained hard. But the next day he appeared on the branch of a tree near our house. He seemed to be saying goodbye to us before he disappeared into the forest. The girls were so happy to see him again, but they knew that they would never see him again. They felt a mix of sadness and joy. They were sad to see Squirt go, but they were also happy that he was finally back where he belonged - in the wild.

Predict what the text will be about。 27.What would be probably the content of the paragraph that follows

D
