John Cronin, who has Down syndrome, graduated from his high school in 2016 and wanted to start a business with his dad. His initial idea was to be a food truck, but they quickly turned it down because neither of them knew how to cook. John then came up with the idea of turning his love of socks with fun designs into a business.
“John’s Crazy Socks” was launched on December 9, 2016, and became an immediate success. What makes this company so special are the 4 principles the Cronins stand by. The first is their commitment to hiring people with disabilities. The second is giving back. They donate 5% of their earnings to the Special Olympics, a program from which John has benefited greatly. The third is their wide range of sock choices, including over 1,200 pairs of fun, crazy themed socks, such as valentine’s socks, awareness socks, and music themed socks, among others. The fourth principle is gratitude. Every package is paired with a hand written thank-you note from John.
John hopes to continue inspiring others with his company’s success. Given time, opportunity, and support, people with disabilities can achieve their dreams.“It is possible,” John told TODAY.

As a young girl, having read stories of men conquering Mount Everest and rowing across the Atlantic, I dreamed of doing something really adventurous. However, I believed that to be a successful adventurer you had to be a man. Years later I was to disprove this belief by becoming the first British woman to walk to the Magnetic North Pole.
In 1995 I was reading a newspaper in the garden, when I spotted a feature which said: “WANTEND ten novice arctic explorers”—to take part in an expedition to walk 350 miles to the Magnetic North Pole.
I recognized immediately that this was the opportunity I had been waiting for. The ad went on to describe the qualities that the organizers were looking for: the ability to work in a team, and the ability to raise 15, 000. I was prepared to do this because I wanted to know if I could survive in the Arctic. There was no reason to delay so I sent off for more details. When the brochure arrived, the most significant thing that hit me were the words on the front page. Are you man enough for the Ultimate Challenge
Immediately my mind raced back to those books I had read all those years ago as a child, about all those men who had been successful adventurers. Only men could be successful adventurers. I was angry. Suddenly that became all the motivation I needed to follow up on this opportunity. “I’ll show them,” I thought to myself. “If they think only men can do this, I am going to prove them wrong.”
24.What was the author’s dream when young
A.To be a success. B.To be a man.
C.To be an adventurer. D.To write adventurous stories.
25.Which quality should the participants possess according to the ad
A.Co-operation. B.Survival skills.
C.Money-making ability. D.Adventure experiences.
26.What made the author angry
A.Racial prejudice. B.Sex discrimination.
C.Books offending women. D.Unfairness in society.
27.Which message does the passage convey
A.Hard work will pay off. B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Women can do what men do. D.Every trade has its master.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.B 27.C

由文章第三段“The ad went on to describe the qualities that the organizers were looking for: the ability to work in a team, and the ability to raise 15, 000. (广告接着描述了组织者所追求的品质:团队合作的能力,以及筹集15000英镑的能力。)”可知,参加人员需要由团队精神,知道怎么相互合作。故选A项。
由文章最后一段“Immediately my mind raced back to those books I had read all those years ago as a child, about all those men who had been successful adventurers. Only men could be successful adventurers. I was angry.(我立刻回想起几年前我小时候读过的那些书,关于那些成功的冒险家。只有男人才能成为成功的冒险家。我很生气。)”可推知,作者生气的原因在于对女性的偏见和歧视。故选B项。
27.推理判断题。由文章最后一段“‘I’ll show them,’ I thought to myself. ‘If they think only men can do this, I am going to prove them wrong.’(“我会给他们看的,”我心里想。“如果他们认为只有男人才能做到这一点,我会证明他们错了。”)”以及上文可知,文章主要讲述社会观念认为冒险的事情只适合男性,而作者作为女性想通过自己北极探险来挑战这观念。通过这来证明在女性可以做任何男性可做的事情。故选C项。
C
Blind people usually possess one advantage over other people who can see. Their sense of hearing is far more acute. Bats, whose sight is poor, use a sound location system to help them avoid blocks in the dark. They send out pulses of sound waves, pitched at 50,000 cycles per second, far above the limits of the human ear, which can hear sounds up to frequencies of about 20,000 cycles per second. As the echoes bounce back off obstacles such as trees and walls, the bats are able to take proper action.
The first steps to help blind people to see with sound are based on exactly the same principle. The sound is given off by an ultrasonic (超声的) torch, whose shape is different from a normal electric torch. It is double-barreled. It works in a similar way to a sonar (声呐) unit on a warship or submarine. The unit’s transmitter sends out pulses of ultrasonic waves at the same frequency as the bat and the receiver picks up the returning echoes. Because these are still above the frequency at which the human ear can pick them up. The echoes are filtered (过滤) through circuits that turn them into “bleeps” which can be clearly heard before passing them into headphones.
This means that a person holding the torch can point it ahead of him and scan the area for obstacles over a range of about 25 feet. If there are no return echoes coming through the headphones, then there is nothing in the way. If echoes do come back, then the closer the obstruction the faster the succession of bleeps and the deeper the pitch of each bleep. With practice, the torch could help a blind person to lead a more normal life.
At present, the experimental ultrasonic torch requires a shoulder bag to carry the batteries, cables for the power supplies and earphones, as well as the torch itself. Fortunately, reducing the size of the electronic equipment is progressing and it should not be long before the whole set-up can be reproduced in a form small enough to fit into a pair of glasses. The wearer would face in the direction he wanted to check, and lift or lower his head just as a sighted person would.
28.Which statement of the following is NOT true according to the article
A.Bats can avoid blocks in the dark.
B.Blind people have more acute sense of hearing than normal people.
C.The ultrasonic torch doesn’t send out the same pulse frequency as the bat does.
D.The shape of ultrasonic torch is different from a normal electric torch.
29.What is the ultrasonic torch used for
a. Helping the blind to walk.
b. Helping deaf children to watch sports.
c. Helping the blind to lead a better life.
d. Being used in a warship or submarine during a war.
A.a b B.a c C.a d D.b c
30.What can we infer from this article
A.The ultrasonic glasses have been produced.
B.The blind with the ultrasonic torch can walk themselves.
C.The blind should not go further without return echoes.
D.The experimental ultrasonic torch is easy to carry.
31.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The ultrasonic torch can improve the life of the blind.
B.Animals can help scientist invent new equipment.
C.The technology is progressing rapidly.
D.The ultrasonic torch is not easy to carry now.
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.B 31.A
根据第二段中“The unit’s transmitter sends out pulses of ultrasonic waves at the same frequency as the bat and the receiver picks up the returning echoes.”(该装置的发射器发出与蝙蝠频率相同的超声波脉冲,接收器接收返回的回声。)
根据第三段“This means that a person holding the torch can point it ahead of him and scan the area for obstacles over a range of about 25 feet. If there are no return echoes coming through the headphones, then there is nothing in the way. If echoes do come back, then the closer the obstruction the faster the succession of bleeps and the deeper the pitch of each bleep. With practice, the torch could help a blind person to lead a more normal life.”(这意味着手持手电筒的人可以将手电筒指向前方,扫描25英尺范围内的障碍物。
根据第二段中“The first steps to help blind people to see with sound are based on exactly the same principle. The sound is given off by an ultrasonic torch, whose shape is different from a normal electric torch.”(帮助盲人看清楚声音的第一步是基于完全相同的原则。 以及第三段中“With practice, the torch could help a blind person to lead a more normal life.”(通过练习,火炬可以帮助盲人过上更正常的生活。)
根据文章大意以及最后一段中“Fortunately, reducing the size of the electronic equipment is progressing and it should not be long before the whole set-up can be reproduced in a form small enough to fit into a pair of glasses. The wearer would face in the direction he wanted to check, and lift or lower his head just as a sighted person would.”(幸运的是,电子设备的尺寸正在缩小,用不了多久,整个装置就可以被复制成小到可以装进一副眼镜的形式。 故选A项。
D
Birth rates often fall during hard times, but the covid-19 pandemic was no ordinary difficult times. On the one hand, people might hesitate to bear children during such a challenge; on the other, the opportunity to work from home makes parenting much easier. During the dark days, no one knew which of these effects would be greater.
According to the data from an American survey, covid did lead to a small decrease in birth rates. Birth counts fell from 3.75 million in 2019 to 3.67 million in 2021. However, a new study by Martha Bailey, Janet Currie and Hannes Schwandt reaches the surprising conclusion that despite apparent decline, birth rates among women born in America actually rose during the pandemic.
The clue that data on total births might be misleading was the timing of the drop. Birth counts fell in early 2020, but most babies conceived (被怀上) after covid struck America in March 2020 would have been due in 2021. The study suggests that what changed in 2020 was not whether women gave birth, but where.
In 2019, 23% of newborns in America had foreign-born mothers Breaking down the data on pandemic-era births by mothers’ origin, the researchers found a striking difference: foreign-born women give birth to 91,000 fewer babies than pre-pandemic-era, whereas native-born ones had 46,000 more.
The study did not assess how much of the fall is from fewer foreign-born women entering the country and then giving birth, and how much from immigrants already in America deciding to leave. But given that America closed its borders for non-essential travel in 2020, a reduction in new arrivals-including those who visit briefly to have an American-citizen child, and then leave-seems more likely.
The researchers figured that the shift to remote work explained much of native-born women’s rise in birth-rate. The increase was most marked (明显的) among the college-educated, who are more likely to be able to work from home, in a country without any paid maternity-leave (产假) or child-care subsidy (补贴).
32.What can be inferred from the passage
A.The data on all America-born babies might be misleading.
B.More babies would have been born in 2021 in America.
C.There is paid maternity-leave in America.
D.Birth counts did fall in 2021 in America.
33.Which of the following might not be the factor that led to the fall of births
A.Some foreign-born women could not enter America and gave birth.
B.Some immigrants living in America decided to leave for their homeland.
C.Some women hesitate to give birth during hard times.
D.Some native American women were unwilling to give birth.
34.How did the researchers come to the surprising conclusion
A.By grouping the mothers based on their origins.
B.By researching into the mothers’ education level.
C.By looking at the data of birth rates from 2007 to 2019.
D.By studying the American mothers’ working place.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.Previous research data on birth rates was not accurate.
B.Birth rates fell in America during the pandemic for many reasons.
C.Pandemic-era birth rates among America-born mothers rose.
D.Covid-19 has greatly affected the place American women give birth.
【答案】32.B 33.D 34.A 35.C
根据第二段“According to the data from an American survey, covid did lead to a small decrease in birth rates. Birth counts fell from 3.75 million in 2019 to 3.67 million in 2021.However, a new study by Martha Bailey, Janet Currie and Hannes Schwandt reaches the surprising conclusion that despite apparent decline, birth rates among women born in America actually rose during the pandemic.”(根据美国一项调查的数据,冠状病毒疾病确实导致了出生率的小幅下降。
根据第一段中“Birth rates often fall during hard times, but the covid-19 pandemic was no ordinary difficult times. On the one hand, people might hesitate to bear children during such a challenge”(在经济困难时期,出生率往往会下降,但2019冠状病毒疾病大流行并非一般的困难时期。一方面,在这样的挑战中,人们可能会犹豫要不要生孩子)倒数第二段“The study did not assess how much of the fall is from fewer foreign-born women entering the country and then giving birth, and how much from immigrants already in America deciding to leave. But given that America closed its borders for non-essential travel in 2020, a reduction in new arrivals-including those who visit briefly to have an American-citizen child, and then leave-seems more likely.”(这项研究没有评估减少的原因中有多少是因为更少的外国出生的妇女进入美国然后分娩的减少,以及有多少是已经移民到美国的移民决定离开(返回自己的祖国)。
根据第三段中“The study suggests that what changed in 2020 was not whether women gave birth, but where.”(研究表明,2020年发生变化的不是女性是否生育,而是生育地点)第四段“In 2019, 23% of newborns in America had foreign-born mothers (外籍母亲). Breaking down the data on pandemic-era births by mothers’ origin, the researchers found a striking difference: foreign-born women give birth to 91,000 fewer babies than pre-pandemic-era, whereas native-born ones had 46,000 more.”(2019年,23% 的美国新生儿的母亲是外籍母亲的。 故选A。
通读全文,根据文章第二段“According to the data from an American survey, covid did lead to a small decrease in birth rates.

That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her handphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “ Keith, the girl left behind her handphone.” Keith looked at the handphone. It was one of the latest models on the market. Looking very sleek, it was red in color with a black cover. The handphone must be expensive.
Keith had always wanted a handphone, But his parents refused. He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on very word, “ I want to take the handphone, ” Mary could not believe her eyes. She merely stared at her brother, “ you can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it ”
Having made the decision, Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly. Outside the café, he ran to his bicycle. Mary had to run after him.
Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Looking at the handphone, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell father about this handphone ”
Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.”
Mary said, “ Now you are lying, too. ” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest
Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone, “This phone number is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone.” She was trying her best to talk some sense into him.

C.The ultrasonic torch doesn’t send out the same pulse frequency as the bat does.

One afternoon after school, Mary and his brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person.
