Before my daughter, Evelyn, was born, I eagerly expected her first year of life. I imagined celebrating every milestone—bonding with her as a newborn, seeing her smile for the first time, hearing her say her first word. I didn’t think of feeding tubes, long hospital stays or an organ transplant(移植). For Evelyn, the first year included all and more.
Evelyn came into this world at just 34 weeks, weighing less than 3 pounds. Genetic testing revealed she had Alagille syndrome, a genetic disorder that can damage the liver, heart and other organs. Soon, we received the news that baby Evelyn needed a liver transplant. Our family moved nearer to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh so that we were closer if a liver was available for Evelyn.
When Evelyn was added to the organ donation wait list, it was under the liver allocation policy in place at that time, which was map-based. This policy lacks any special consideration for transplant candidates. We were told it would likely take three months. Just then, a new policy for liver allocation was tried out. Under the new system, the sickest child patients get first priority. The new policy was only in effect for a little over a week. But in that period, Evelyn received her liver transplant. Had it been just one week earlier or later, we would not have received the call.
As Evelyn recovers from her transplant, we are grateful for the change. I am also sad, because the new policy was short-lived. That means another mom like me might not receive that phone call with good news.
Other children should have the same opportunity as Evelyn to live healthy happy lives. When it comes to liver transplant policy, we can and must do better for children.
4、What probably happened to Evelyn shortly after she was born
A. She failed to give a smile. B. She had psychological problems.
C. She had a serious liver failure. D. She suffered from a heart attack.

D. Evelyn is healthy now.
7、What does the author want to express in the last paragraph
A. We must guarantee kids have healthy livers.
B. The sickest kids should get liver transplants first.
C. Children are the most important.
D. Kids-should have chances of a liver transplant.
Like many of the arts, music flourished (繁荣) during the Zhou dynasty. From this period we have instruments, models of performers, descriptions of musicians and dancers, and the Shijing, or The Book of Poetry, which contains poems and songs of court and common people during the Zhou dynasty. It is likely that music played an extremely important role in the Zhou dynasty for all social classes.
One of the most important sources of information the researchers have regarding Zhou-dynasty music is from the tomb of the Marquis Yi of Zeng (433 B.C.E.). This tomb was uncovered in 1977 in Hubei Province and contained the most extensive and well-preserved set of musical instruments ever found in an ancient Chinese tomb. This four-chamber(室) tomb was designed in imitation(模仿) of a palace with a central courtyard, reflecting the belief that the Marquis Yi would require the same comforts in the afterlife that he had enjoyed during his lifetime. The central chamber of the tomb, which mirrored a palace courtyard, contained most of the musical instruments found, including a complete set of sixty-five bells fixed on wooden shelves. In addition, twenty-one young women were buried with the Marquis Yi, some of whom were likely his favorite musicians and dancers.
The Marquis Yi's set of sixty-five bells is remarkable for a variety of reasons. First, they are clearly dated —an inscription(碑文) indicates that the bells were a gift given to him in 433 BU.. Second, the bells were very expensive to produce and to purchase, particularly a set of this size, so they are further evidence of the Marquis Yi's status. Finally, the bells, along with the other instruments in the room, illustrate what an instrumental band might have consisted of during this period. Scholars predict that it would have required twenty-four musicians to play all instalments at once.
There are still many gaps in our knowledge of ancient Chinese music, partly because there was no system for recording music in a written form.
8、The Rook of Poetry is mentioned in paragraph 1 to ______.
A. show the significance of the book.
B. describe the meaning of the book.
C. represent the life of people in the Zhou dynasty.
D. show the popularity of music in the Zhou dynasty.
9、According to the passage, what can we know about the tomb
A. It contains a complete set of musical instruments.
B. It is designed by the Marquis Yi of Zeng.
C. It is of the same size as that of the palace.
D. It reflects the wish of the Marquis Yi for his life after death.
10、Why is the set of sixty-five bells extraordinary
A. Because it once was an expensive gift.
B. Because it was difficult to buy at that time.
C. Because it might prove the Marquis Yi's position.
D. Because it needed twenty-four performers to play at the same time.
11、What can be the best title for the text
A.A look into the Zhou-dynasty Music. B. An Invaluable Tomb.
C. Ancient Musical Instruments. D. The Importance of Ancient Music.
To tackle the problem of tiny plastics polluting waterways, chemists in the Czech Republic are thinking small. Their brainchild is a new micro-robot which is no bigger than the tip of a sharpened pencil. When sunlight hits them, they produce chemical reactions that push them through water in a specific direction. When they find a piece of plastic, they stick to it and start to break it down.
Chemist Martin Pumera at the Czech University led the project. A decade ago, he chose to focus on the problem caused by micro-plastics. They’re everywhere—from the bottom of the ocean to air blowing onto ice on the top of mountains. They’ve turned up in drinking water. Some studies estimate that billions of pieces of plastic end up in the world's waters. The plastic has many sources, from shopping bags to washing and cleaning wipes.
In lab experiments, the star-shaped swimmers stuck onto each of four different types of plastic. And after a week exposed to light, the robots had reduced the weight of the plastics. It wasn't much—only by ten percent. But that was an indication that they were breaking the plastic down. They also caused the surface of the plastic to change from smooth to rough. That's another sign that the robots were degrading(分解) it. The new study is a proof of concept type. That means it shows something can be done successfully
In fact, Pumera says they still have a long way to go. There are many types of plastics. And even these micro-robots are unlikely to succeed in degrading them all. The researchers also have not yet shown how safe this system is for the environment, although Pumera says that’s their next goal. The first real-world test will be in a wastewater-treatment plant. “Indeed,” says one researcher, “We’ll need a lot of testing to show that they’re safe in open waterways, such as at sea.”
