There is an old saying that all of us are born with two bags hung on our necks. A small bag in front of our chest is filled up with other people’s faults(缺点), while the big one at the back is full of our own shortcomings(短处).
This makes it easy to find other people’s faults, but hard to see our own faults behind us.
There was a boy named Tommy. He had four friends: Simon, Jack, Johnny and Harry. Tommy always opened the front bag to check what was in it. He saw other people’s faults very quickly. When Simon was impatient with him, he said to Simon, “It’s so easy for you to get angry. It is hard to be friends with you.”
Later that day, Tommy told his mother about Jack’s dishonesty(不诚实). “Jack took my things without asking. He also forgot to return them.” Tommy himself did not like sharing his things with anyone.
When Johnny was too tired to play with him, he said, “You are such a rude(粗鲁的)person.” He thought Harry was too proud of his rich parents. But Tommy was just proud of himself because he could not see any of his own shortcomings! He could not understand why he did not get on well with others.
If only Tommy would turn the bags around, he would discover his own impatience, dishonesty, bad manners and vanity(虚荣). They were no better than that of Simon, Jack, Johnny or Harry.

①Type in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask the robot to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll get the story of Max, who was on his way past many difficulties to sing among the stars.
②This robot writer is real. It’s called ChatGPT. It was developed by US company OpenAI. It can translate languages, talk with people and write songs, poems and even jokes. It’s one of the most powerful AI of its kind, with the complete writing range (范围) of a real person! According to a US report of more than 1,000 students, over 89% of them have used ChatGPT to help with homework. Some students even got high marks thanks to papers written by ChatGPT.
③Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the district’s networks and devices (设备), CNN reported.
④The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat (作弊) on homework. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread incorrect information. “It does not build critical-thinking (批判性思维) and problem-solving still, which are necessary for academic (学术的) and lifelong success,” said Jenna Lyle, a secretary of the New York City Department of Education.
⑤However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting (起草) policies on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.

Counting the hairs on your head would be very difficult. Many have tried, but most people give up after losing count or getting bored! However, scientists say people have more than 100, 000 hairs on their heads on average. Of course, this number is different from person to person. Some people have much more hair than others.
What causes hair loss There are many reasons, such as stress, illness and styling. It also runs in families. Besides, many people simply lose hair as they grow older. To avoid losing hair, you should wash your hair correctly and condition (养护) your hair to help keep your hair healthy. It’s also important to be gentle when brushing or combing hair.
Hair loss is not the same as daily shedding (脱落). People lose an average of 50 to 100 hairs a day. It’s normal. If you are losing more hair than average, talk to the adults you trust. They can help you decide whether to ask a doctor for help.
Why do humans have hair on their heads Most other mammals (哺乳动物) have thick fur covering their whole bodies. While humans grow small and fine hairs on much of their skin, it’s much thicker on the top of the head. Scientists say the answers come down to evolution. Humans probably evolved without fur because they have more sweat glands (汗腺) than other mammals. Humans walk upright on two legs. Therefore, the top of their heads needs protection from the sun. This is why people have more hair on their heads than on the rest of their bodies. The hair also helps keep heat in cold weather and keep a healthy body temperature.

What are the astronauts’ bedrooms like in a space station Do water drops fly away when astronauts have a drink If you have lots of questions about life in space, you should checkout the latest lecture from space given by three Chinese astronauts(宇航员)—Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu were working on China’s Tiangong space station now. They gave a science lecture 400 kilometers above Earth on Dec 9. Millions of students watched it and learned many amazing science facts. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity(重力). But in space, our bones(骨头)and muscles(肌肉)don’t need to support our body’s weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. NASA says that astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. During the lecture, Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It’s called a “penguin suit”. There are many elastic bands(弹力带)inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.
Wang also showed students how she walked on a kind of running machine and rode a bicycle. Astronauts exercise with these tools every day to prevent muscle loss.
Space water is different
During another experiment, Wang made a water film. Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth. Why
We need to first understand the surface(表面)tension of water. Surface tension is like a “skin”of water. The “skin” is there because water molecules(分子)are drawn to each other. One example on Earth is that some bugs(小虫子)can “walk on water “. Most of the time, gravity is too strong and it breaks the “skin”. But with zero gravity in space, the “skin”stays strong and the water ball will not break.
Water in space acts differently from water on earth in other ways. For example, water will not go down if you try to pour it into a cup. That’s why astronauts usually drink water through straws(吸管)in sealed bags. If astronauts cry, the tears will stay on their eyeballs(眼球)instead of falling down.

I ran to her and threw my arms round her, but at that moment her knees seemed to give way and she fell to the ground. I rush to her, and she suddenly shrieked out (痛苦地喊出) in a voice which I shall never forget, ‘Oh, my God! Helen! It was the band! The speckled band!’. There was something else that she wanted to say. She pointed into the air in the direction of stepfather’s room.”
Holmes is sitting in his chair. His eyes are closed. He is listening carefully to Helen’s story. He hears every detail.
Helen continues. “My stepfather has no friends. He fights with everyone. He is strong and gets angry quickly. Everyone is afraid of him.”

Since I became a mother, I cannot remember the last time I had quality time for myself. Even my simple hobby of reading a book was already a thing of the past. All my time was spent taking care of the family, doing house chores, and of course, working to make a living. I longed for “me time”.
When I say “me time”, I only mean having an hour of quietness, listening to music, reading a book, or watching a movie, without being troubled by my kids.
It was not until quite recently that I had a chance to travel to a new country all by myself! My husband and kids would have to follow at a later date.
Now, I am alone in an apartment enjoying my “me traveling”. Finally, I can do whatever I want and keep the house clean and tidy. I can read my favorite books and do all that I want to do with my time. I practically have all the time for myself!
But surprisingly it doesn’t make me happy. I am lonely. No more daily routine of nagging (唠叨) and pushing the kids to get up. I miss my kids and my husband. I feel something in me is missing. Now I realize that making time for me doesn’t mean being away from those I love. I can still have “me time” even if I have the kids around and endless chores to do. I can change my attitude toward chores and routines (日常).
Life won’t be the same without the people you love near you. Now I am looking forward to them joining me soon.

Ancient Chinese architecture (建筑) had its own special styles. The ancient Chinese showed their wisdom and great wishes for life in different kinds of homes, temples, and palaces.
The inside of buildings of all kinds were decorated with flower designs and scrolls (卷轴) and peaceful things found in nature. The ancient Chinese also used a glaze (釉料) to coat walls for protection against moisture (潮湿) and for added beauty.
The courtyard was an important part of all ancient Chinese buildings, from the poorest farmhouse to the biggest palace. The poor could not afford a big courtyard with three sides by wings of a home and the fourth side guarded by a gate, to create a closed courtyard. What do coaches look for in basketball players It is important to be tall, strong and fast. But that is not enough. A new study says coaches cares more about what’s in a player’s head.
Michael Rogers works at the University of South Australia. For the new study, he surveyed 90 coaches from 23 countries. They coached college, processional and international basketball players, both men and women. Rogers asked what they looked for in players.
The coaches listed 35 important skills. Some were physical, such as speed. Others were mental (精神的), such as confidence. According to them, the mental ones were at the top of the petitiveness, team spirit and outlook (见解) were the top three. Only one physical skill made the top ten. That is agility—the ability to move quickly and easily.
This doesn’t mean physical skills aren’t important. But they are not enough. To do well at the top level, you need the right mindset (观念模式). “Coaches want players who are easy to teach and work hand.” Rogers said.
According to Timothy Baghurst, a teacher at Florida State University in the US, few players are taught mental skills. Most coaches don’t teach communication skills. They also don’t teach how to control feelings. But these skills are important for players.
Grant Tomkinson helped with the study. He thinks it goes beyond (超出) sports. It teaches life lessons. It shows us that it is important to pay attention to mental skills. “The mental skills can lead to success in all areas of life,” he said.

Do you know you have more than 600 muscles(肌肉)in your body These muscles have different jobs. Keeping your muscles healthy will help you be able to walk, run, jump and do all the things you love to do.
What kind of muscles do you have
When you think about your muscles, you probably think about the ones you can control. These are your voluntary(随意的)muscles. They are connected to your bones(骨骼)and work together with your bones to help you walk, run, pick up things or ride a bicycle. The muscles of your mouth and throat even help you talk! But there are also muscles you can’t control. They are your involuntary(不随意的)muscles, such as your heart muscle and smooth muscles.
Why are healthy muscles important
Healthy muscles let you move freely and keep your body strong. They also help to keep your joints(关节)in good shape. If the muscles around your knee, for example, get weak, you will more probably injure(伤害)that knee. Healthy muscles also help you keep your balance, so you less probably fall.
How do you keep your muscles healthy
· Get at least 60 minutes of physical exercise every day. There are lots of activities you can do for your muscles. Walking, jumping, dancing and swimming are all good ways.
· Eat healthily. It will help manage your weight and provide different kinds of nutrients(营养素)for your muscles and health. For example, if you don’t get enough iron, you may feel weak and tired, because your muscles don’t get enough oxygen(氧气).
· Prevent injuries. There are many ways to help prevent muscle injuries. For example, doing warm-up exercises before exercising may make the muscles warmer. Don’t try to “play through the pain”. If something starts to hurt, stop exercising or playing. When you lift something heavy, keep your back straight and bend(弯曲)your knees to lift it. This will protect the muscles in your back. Remember to drink lots of water while exercising, especially in warm weather. If your body’s water level gets too low, you could get dizzy(晕眩的)or even pass out.

For the first time, scientists have grown plants in moon soil (土壤) collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts.
The scientists had no idea if anything would grow in moon soil. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow plants. And the result was surprising. “Plants actually grow in moon soil,” Robert Ferl, a scientist of the University of Florida said.

Mrs. Li is over 80 years old. She has lived in Beijing all her life. A reporter interviewed her yesterday. The followings are their questions and answers.
What was your life like in the past
My family lived in a tiny house. My father was a postman, and he often worked twelve hours a day outside in the winter cold or in the summer heat. My mum was a farm girl before she met my father. She was a kind and loving mother. She didn’t go out to work. There were five children in my family, and looking after us was more than a full-time job.
The food we ate was simple. We could only eat meat once or twice a year. I wasn’t sent to school because my family couldn’t afford the tuition.
How has life changed
Families have got smaller than they were in the past. The role of women has changed too. My daughter is really lucky. She has a good education. I’m happy that she can go to work even after getting married, but sometimes I feel lonely because she can’t come to see me often.
Transport and travel are easier today. When I was young, I went everywhere on foot. Now you can take the bus, drive the car or ride the shared bikes. What I don’t like is that there’s so much more traffic. It’s so difficult to cross the road. And, of course, we have television today and I really enjoy watching TV. But I hate some of the shows because they are too noisy for me.
Generally speaking, I think life is better today. We eat better and we live longer.
