I can’t miss the little old lady with her kerchief (方头巾) on her head a black umbrella blowing all over. I can tell she is freezing. She is standing at a bus stop, and I’m driving by, late for my early morning shift. I decide to stop and offer her a ride.
Of course, she declines, but when I ask again and insist, finally, she gets in the car. I take her to her destination, and by the time she gets out of my car, she is smiling and thanks me.
I was late for work that day, but I was so glad that I stopped. That was 40 years ago, and the beginning of a new habit, one that continues when I’m out driving in bad weather.
If there’s someone at a bus stop, especially if it’s an elderly person waiting at off hours and in bad weather, I will pull over and ask if they need a ride.
Once, a young doctor jumped in. She had finished a long shift and had been waiting and waiting at the bus stop. She had no hesitation and, for the first time, I was able to help someone who performs miracles (奇迹) on a daily basis. That felt good.
But the best part of my ride offers is the conversation. I do tend to ask a lot of questions: where are you from, where are you going, family, background, pets and whatever else comes to mind. Surprisingly, everyone wants to chat. We are usually laughing by the time the ride is over. “What a shame!” I often think when they hop out, as the stories were just getting started.
Now as retirement approaches, I believe I have found my calling. I will be happy to join a community driving program to take people to one appointment or another — or perhaps just to the coffee shop to sit and listen for an hour.
As the years pass, perhaps I will be the one standing at the bus stop. Perhaps there will be somebody who rolls down a window and offers me a seat for a little ride. I will continue to take that leap of faith in the kindness of strangers.
4. What are the first three paragraphs mainly about
A. How the author started offering rides.
B The value of the author’s actions.
C. An old lady who impressed the author.
D. An accident that happened 40 years ago.
5. What does the author like most about her ride offers
A. Helping people who contribute to society.
B. People accepting her offer without hesitation.

6. What does the author plan to do
A. Become a taxi driver after retirement.
B. Continue driving people to their destinations.
C. Wait to be offered a ride at a bus stop.
D. Share her stories with more people.
7. What message does the author want to convey

C. Offering rides to strangers involves risks.
D. Always believe in the goodness in people.

Facebook parent company Meta recently showed how the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool can translate between English and the Hokkien language. Its project required different, unusual development methods. That is because Hokkien is mainly a spoken language. It does not have a widely used written form.
Generally, developers of translation systems train AI models on very large amounts of written text in the target languages. This arms the system with many different language examples and combinations in an effort to produce the most correct results.
In general, AI-powered translation systems have improved greatly in recent years. It is now easier than ever to get translation help online or on devices to make international communication better. But one problem with such systems is that there are delays linked to the translation process. For example, when the system records spoken speech, the words are first converted into text and then translated by an AI system. Then, the translated words are converted back into speech so they can be heard.
The unusual part of the Meta project is that the development team did not have large amounts of Hokkien language text to feed into the AI system.
Hokkien is a dialect of Chinese. It is spoken by millions of people in Fujian Province and Taiwan. Additionally, it is also widely spoken in some areas in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. Generally, families passed down the language throughout the generations.
Meta said it used several different methods to create the new system to translate to and from Hokkien and English. The team trained its AI models on written text examples from another version of Chinese, Mandarin, which is similar to Hokkien. In addition, Méta developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text. The team also worked closely with Hokkien speakers to make sure the results were correct.
The company said, however, that its Hokkien translation model is still a work in progress. It noted that the system is only able to translate one full sentence at a time at the moment.
8. What makes Meta’s project of translating Hokkien unusual
A. The lack of its written form. B. The special Chinese writing system.
C. The limited speakers of Hokkien. D. The complex language examples and combinations.
9. What does the underlined word “converted” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Transformed. B. Guided. C. Sorted. D. Returned.
10. What do AI-powered translation systems fail to do now
A. Get everyone to have access to online translation.
B. Use devices to communicate internationally.
C. Provide a real time translation at any place.
D. Produce the most correct translation results
11. What is the main idea of the sixth paragraph
A. How Mandarin is similar to Hokkien. B. How Hokkien speakers speak Hokkien.
C. How English text is translated into Hokkien. D. How Meta’s translation system translates Hokkien.
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要说明了Meta公司利用人工智能进行英语和闽南语之间进行翻译,介绍了其工作方式以及存在的问题。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“That is because Hokkien is mainly a spoken language. It does not have a widely used written form.(那是因为闽南语主要是一种口语。它没有广泛使用的书面形式)”以及第四段“The unusual part of the Meta project is that the development team did not have large amounts of Hokkien language text to feed into the AI system.( Meta项目的不同寻常之处在于,开发团队没有大量的闽南语文本输入到AI系统中)”可知,缺乏书面形式让Meta的闽南语翻译项目与众不同。故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“For example, when the system records spoken speech, the words are first”以及后文“into text and then translated by an AI system.”可知,当系统记录语音时,单词首先应该是被转换成文本,然后由人工智能系统翻译。故画线词意思是“转换”。故选A。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“But one problem with such systems is that there are delays linked to the translation process. (但这种系统的一个问题是,翻译过程中存在延迟)”和最后一段“The company said, however, that its Hokkien translation model is still a work in progress. It noted that the system is only able to translate one full sentence at a time at the moment.(然而,该公司表示,其闽南语翻译模式仍在进行中。该公司指出,该系统目前一次只能翻译一个完整的句子)”可知,人工智能翻译系统现在做不到随时随地提供实时翻译。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第六段“Meta said it used several different methods to create the new system to translate to and from Hokkienand English. The team trained its AI models on written text examples from another version of Chinese, Mandarin, which is similar to Hokkien. In addition, Meta developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text. The team also worked closely with Hokkien speakers to make sure the results were correct.(Meta表示,他们使用了几种不同的方法来创建新的闽南语和英语的翻译系统。该团队用另一种类似闽南语的中文普通话的书面文本示例来训练人工智能模型。此外,Meta的开发人员使用了一种编码工具来比较闽南语口语和类似的英语文本。该团队还与说闽南语的人密切合作,以确保结果的正确性)”可知,第六段的主旨是Meta的翻译系统是如何翻译闽南语的。故选D。
D
Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.
Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. A former research found positive results on the use of them. But it mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up for language courses and these apps worked as an after﹣class support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4, 095 Busuu users has been carried out to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app.
Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers special models where some contents are ready for use for free while some contents are not. We find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level because there is a reduction in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Female users are likely to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.
Feedback in the app is highly thought of. More than 92% of the users say that the app has met their expectations and 86% consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance nervousness that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.
12. What’s the reason why the results of the former research weren’t always reliable
A. It used out-of-date methods. B. It just focused on positive results.
C. It was only carried out before class. D. It only considered users of a limited kind.
13. What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text
A. All the contents are free to use. B. Users use it for diverse purposes.
C. It’s used by more advanced learners. D. It’s more popular with female learners.
14. What does the underlined word “address” in the last paragraph mean
A. solve. B. organize. C. increase. D. practice.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Students should be required to use apps for homework after class.
B. Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers.
C. Students won’t suffer nervousness in learning languages by using Busuu.
D. Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍语言学习应用程序的功能和作用,即对语言学习者积极、有效,让大部分用户感到满意。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“But it mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up for language courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable.(但它主要集中在哪些注册了语言课程学习者身上,这些应用程序只是作为课后支持,所以结果并不总是可靠)”可知,以前的研究结果不总是可靠的,因为它只考虑了有限种类的用户。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad.(大多数人使用该应用程序是因为个人兴趣,或者因为他们想在国外学习或生活。)”可知,大多数用户使用Busuu应用程序是因为有着不一样的目的。故选B。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users”(此外,语言学习应用程序还创造了一个只有用户知道错误的环境)可知,这可以解决学习者被要求说外语时所遭受的紧张表现,由宾语“the performance nervousness that many learners suffer from”(许多学习者在被要求说外语时所遭受的表现紧张的情况。)并结合语境可推知划线词意思是“解决”,A. solve解决;B. organise组织;C. increase增加;D. practice练习。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.(语言学习应用程序现在很流行,提供了学习词汇和练习语法的机会。但人们一直在讨论这类应用的有效性)”结合文章主要介绍语言学习应用程序的功能和作用,即对语言学习者积极、有效,让大部分用户感到满意。由此判断,这篇文章的主旨是语言学习应用程序对语言学习者来说是有效和令人满意的。故选D。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When high school students spend time memorizing and reciting a poem, they develop confidence by engaging deeply with language. Here are my five Cs-things I’ve observed from several years of teaching students through Poetry Out Loud, from selecting a poem to performing at the state competition.
Choice.____16____ Students learn how to search for poems, and they have complete discretion (判断力) over the poem they will perform. Students often gravitate (被吸引) to poems that fit their reading level and also match a personal interest or philosophy, which is great. But there are also lots of unexpected mismatches that end up stretching students’ skills in ways a teacher could not work out.
Concrete learning task. Learning just one poem well gives students a finite and concentrated experience with language. ____17____ I’ve seen students with all manner of challenges get up and do something they thought was impossible, in large part because it involves a single, repeated exercise.
Continuing learning. Students learn a poem that will likely stay with them for years, if not forever. Poems contain mysteries and complexities that reveal themselves slowly- and sometimes even suddenly-over time. ____18____
Confidence. Recitation is the perfect introduction to public speaking skills. All students need to be able to speak effectively in front of others. ____19____Students learn elements of physical presence, voice, speed, volume, and tone without having to present their own work, which is more frightening for most students.
____20____Students are not asked to memorize much anymore, yet many of them take pleasure in the act of repetition and remembering. They like testing themselves and realizing that they can in fact recall lines. For English language learners, many autistic students, and other exceptional learners, reciting poetry is an especially powerful way to understand language and build confidence. For our kids who need small victories, mastering one poem is a welcome relief.
A. Practice memorizing poems.
B. Challenging memory and recall.
C. This is the first step of the exercise.
D. Performing a poem is a bit like acting.
E. And every student can learn one poem.
F. Therefore, it is a lasting course to learn poems.
G. As a result, it is beneficial for students to learn poems.
【答案】16. C 17. E 18. F 19. D 20. B

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Chris and Paul were good friends and on the same school basketball team, The Lions. They loved basketball very much and were both huge fans of the NBA. After school, when they weren’t playing on the court which was next to their building, they were watching a basketball game on TV. Chris’s favourite player was LeBron James. Paul’s favourite player was Tyrone Bogues, although they actually agreed that they were both champions.
Bogues was only 1.6 metres tall, which made him the shortest player ever in the NBA. Guess what Paul was only 1.6 metres tall, too! Paul knew that being shorter than other players meant that he had to practise more. He did not miss a single practice and participated in every training. During all those hours of doing jump shots on his own, he used Bogues as his inspiration. Paul once said firmly, “If Bogues could make it, why not me ”
Their coach was not so sure. Paul had to try out many times just for making the team. He was still usually on the bench, being just a replacement, which was really tough on him. Everyone knew Paul had real skills, and was someone who worked really hard and had a strong desire to play for the team. Chris always comforted him and encouraged him, telling him not to give up. However, Paul didn’t get a chance.
This week, The Lions were playing against their main competitors, The Bears, a team whose record this season had been perfect. They hadn’t lost a single game. It would be a tough one.
Everyone of the Lions played to the best of their abilities. Suddenly, a player and Chris crashed into each other. Pain raced through Chirs’s body. His knee hurt badly. The team gathered around, looking worried. The last quarter was about to begin, and The Lions was behind by 10 points.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The coach agreed, “Paul, it’s your time to shine.”
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “You can’t play anymore,” the doctor said, putting an ice pack on Chris’s knee. The coach was very sad and told Chris that there were no more players. Then someone recommended Paul, but he said Paul couldn’t play. Meanwhile, another player also suggested letting Paul have a try. Then, Paul asked the coach to let him try and promised that he wouldn’t let him down.
The coach agreed, “Paul, it’s your time to shine.” Paul jumped up and rushed onto the court. And clearly, all the extra hours that he’d spent practicing alone paid off. The other team couldn’t keep up with his energy and speed. He made shot after shot, and the crowd couldn’t stop clapping and cheering. When the game ended, his team had won by two points. The coach was surprised at Paul’s performance. He smiled at Paul and said he’d earned his place on the team.

I can’t miss the little old lady with her kerchief (方头巾) on her head, a black umbrella blowing all over.

11 What is the main idea of the sixth paragraph
A. How Mandarin is similar to Hokkien. B. How Hokkien speakers speak Hokkien.
C. How English text is translated into Hokkien. D. How Meta’s translation system translates Hokkien.
Most people use the app because of personal interest or because they want to study or live abroad.

He was still usually on the bench being just a replacement, which was really tough on him.
