Candy comes in many flavors. Some taste like fruit. Some taste like flowers. Some are chewy, like taffy(太妃糖) and gum. Hard candy is, well, hard! So, it lasts for a long time.
But, in spoken English, there are some types of candy that you cannot eat. For example, you can't eat eye candy. Eye candy is a person—man or woman—who is very good-looking. So, looking at this person is a treat for the eye, just like candy is a treat for the taste buds.
Do you hear of “candy coat” Of course it is not a coat made of candy. But you can say I don’t candy coat the truth. What does candy-coating something mean Well, some pills are covered with a coat of thin, sweet candy. The coat makes swallowing the pill easier, and it may hide a bitter taste. So, candy coating a difficult truth or situation means you don't directly discuss its bad parts.
After talking about candy you may want to eat some candies. However, some people dislike things that are very sweet, especially adults. But even if you do not like candy, you can still be called a kid in a candy store. This expression means a person is very happy to do something or to simply be somewhere. Imagine a child going from one candy display to the next, not knowing which candy to choose!
Talking about children brings us to another expression: as easy as taking candy from a baby. Think about a small, helpless baby holding a piece of candy. Taking it would be very easy—mean, but easy. So, use this expression when you are talking about something that may be simple to do, but probably not right.
24. The phrase “eye candy” can be used to describe a girl who is .
A. hardworking B. beautiful C. warm-hearted D. optimistic
25. What does the underlined word “swallowing” mean in English
A. Making. B. Taking. C. Selling. D. Testing.
26. Which of the following expressions means you are doing something with wrong intention
A. Eye candy.
B. Candy coat.
C. A kid in a candy store.
D. As easy as taking candy from a baby.
27. What is the best title of the passage
A. Candy: enjoy it or avoid it
B. Various candies in English
C. The best candy in the world
D. Candy's different flavors
C
If you have a dream, go for it.
My dad talked of Tibet Autonomous Region in China’s western part. Tibet was a place I wanted to see and discover but I was unable to find the right time to go. After a few talks with my dad, we decided to take a pause in our lives for a few weeks in July 2019 to start an amazing adventure.
We started our journey on a Saturday morning at the Guangzhou train station in south China. We started the Journey admiring the mysterious mountains of south China. The next day it changed quite suddenly to the dry, waterless landscape of central-west China as we passed through Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. That evening we arrived in Xining, Qinghai Province, where we got onto the Xining-Lhasa train.
We were welcomed on the train with Tibetan yogurt. The train signs were also written in Tibetan; the beautiful handwriting matched its environment and people. The following afternoon we arrived in Lhasa, one of the highest altitude cities in the world. Lhasa is a gem hidden on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(青藏高原). We started our tour of Lhasa by exploring the palace and watching local Tibetans do morning prayers and dances in the park. Overlooking the Jokhang Temple, a golden temple in the middle of old Lhasa, we enjoyed an amazingly breathtaking view. We visited the temple next before walking in the old quarter and Barkhor Street in the evening, where we tried local food and bought local products.
The following day, we started our journey to the Mount Qomolangma base camp by road from Lhasa. Along the way we stopped to admire the beautiful Yamdrok Lake, a huge freshwater lake that is one of the three sacred lakes in Tibet. Yaks(牦牛)in blankets and bells at the lake made for a picturesque impression of perfect countryside Tibet.
About a week later, the highlight came in the afternoon when we arrived at the Mount Qomolangma base camp. We were staying in a guesthouse just next to the base camp. After dropping off our backpacks, we headed straight outside to see the magnificent Mt Qomolangma. There it was, the top of the mountain peeking through the clouds, astonishing us with its unbelievable height. We enjoyed the mountain waves and saw the beautiful clouds separated until the sunset over the peak, feeling I would have regretted for the rest of my life if I hadn't made the journey.

D. To tell us traveling ten thousand miles is better than reading ten thousand books.

Swimming alongside wild dolphins has long been on the Hawaii vacation list. However, scientists are concerned that increased human activities may do bad to the animals by disturbing a very important period of their rest. “We have seen changes in their action,” Ann Garrett of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service said. “They will be more active with people around.”
After feeding in deep water at night, dolphins return to sheltered, shallow(浅的)water to rest during the day. The problem appears when swimmers draw them out of their resting state, a change in behavior that NOAA points out “may cause disturbance”.
“Disturbing their resting behaviors can actually affect their long-term health and the health of the population,” Garrett said. This summer, NOAA is set to put forward its new rules. “NOAA is considering a lot of measures. These measures may make some people angry, but they will undoubtedly do good to those dolphins,” Garrett said.
Today, a small number of Hawaii tour companies willingly join in a NOAA program called Dolphin SMART. Designed to lower the disturbance that dolphins suffer because of human activities to the minimum(最低限度), the program encourages tourists to stay 50 yards away from dolphins and to move away carefully if they feel the animals are disturbed.
NOAA’s new rules, however, would not be allowed to be chosen to follow or not, and could affect over 200 dolphin-related businesses as well as swimmers and other ocean users. Garrett said that new rules would keep tour companies from disturbing dolphins. “The final goal of the changes,” she said, “will be to provide more protections for dolphins while still offering a chance for tourists to have a pleasant wildlife experience”.
32. What can we learn about dolphins’ living habits from the text
A. They sleep in deep water. B. They hunt in shallow water.
C. They rest during the nighttime. D. They are inactive in the daytime.
33. What does Garrett think of the measures to be taken by NOAA
A. Perfect. B. Meaningless. C. Effective. D. Confusing.
Dolphin SMART is a program designed to _____________.
A. make the most use of dolphins
B. help reduce human disturbance to dolphins
C. let people know how smart dolphins are
D. show how to get close to dolphins in a smart way
In the last paragraph Garrett hopes that _________________.
A. new rules will be carried out immediately
B. dolphin-related businesses will close down
C. swimmers will choose to stay away from wildlife
D. the changes will protect dolphins without disappointing tourists

Hands-on activities can enrich a trip by creating fond memories and instilling(逐渐灌输)
knowledge about the local culture through interactivity(互动). In Japan, a variety of activities are
offered to tourists at workshops, many open-air museums, as well as craft(工艺)villages across Japan.
Fruit picking
Typical duration: 30 to 60 minutes

Candy comes in many flavors. Some taste like fruit. Some taste like flowers. Some are chewy, like
taffy(太妃糖) and gum. Hard candy is, well, hard! So, it lasts for a long time.
But, in spoken English, there are some types of candy that you cannot eat. For example, you can't
eat eye candy. Eye candy is a person—man or woman—who is very good-looking. So, looking at this
person is a treat for the eye, just like candy is a treat for the taste buds.
Do you hear of “candy coat” Of course it is not a coat made of candy. But you can say I don’t
candy coat the truth. What does candy-coating something mean Well, some pills are covered with a
coat of thin, sweet candy. The coat makes swallowing the pill easier, and it may hide a bitter taste. So,
candy coating a difficult truth or situation means you don't directly discuss its bad parts.
After talking about candy you may want to eat some candies. However, some people dislike things
that are very sweet, especially adults. But even if you do not like candy, you can still be called a kid in a
candy store. This expression means a person is very happy to do something or to simply be somewhere.
Imagine a child going from one candy display to the next, not knowing which candy to choose!
Talking about children brings us to another expression: as easy as taking candy from a baby. Think
about a small, helpless baby holding a piece of candy. Taking it would be very easy—mean, but easy. So,
use this expression when you are talking about something that may be simple to do, but probably not
right.
24. The phrase “eye candy” can be used to describe a girl who is .
A. hardworking B. beautiful C. warm-hearted D. optimistic
25. What does the underlined word “swallowing” mean in English
A. Making. B. Taking. C. Selling. D. Testing.
26. Which of the following expressions means you are doing something with wrong intention
A. Eye candy.
B. Candy coat.
C. A kid in a candy store.
D. As easy as taking candy from a baby.

B. Various candies in English
C. The best candy in the world
D. Candy's different flavors

If you have a dream, go for it.
My dad talked of Tibet Autonomous Region in China’s western part. Tibet was a place I wanted to
see and discover but I was unable to find the right time to go. After a few talks with my dad, we decided
to take a pause in our lives for a few weeks in July 2019 to start an amazing adventure.
We started our journey on a Saturday morning at the Guangzhou train station in south China. We
started the Journey admiring the mysterious mountains of south China. The next day it changed quite
suddenly to the dry, waterless landscape of central-west China as we passed through Shaanxi and Gansu
provinces. That evening we arrived in Xining, Qinghai Province, where we got onto the Xining-Lhasa
train.
We were welcomed on the train with Tibetan yogurt. The train signs were also written in Tibetan;
the beautiful handwriting matched its environment and people. The following afternoon we arrived in
Lhasa, one of the highest altitude cities in the world. Lhasa is a gem hidden on the Qinghai-Tibet
Plateau(青藏高原). We started our tour of Lhasa by exploring the palace and watching local Tibetans do
morning prayers and dances in the park. Overlooking the Jokhang Temple, a golden temple in the
middle of old Lhasa, we enjoyed an amazingly breathtaking view. We visited the temple next before
walking in the old quarter and Barkhor Street in the evening, where we tried local food and bought local
products.
The following day, we started our journey to the Mount Qomolangma base camp by road from
Lhasa. Along the way we stopped to admire the beautiful Yamdrok Lake, a huge freshwater lake that is
one of the three sacred lakes in Tibet. Yaks(牦牛)in blankets and bells at the lake made for a
picturesque impression of perfect countryside Tibet.
About a week later, the highlight came in the afternoon when we arrived at the Mount
Qomolangma base camp. We were staying in a guesthouse just next to the base camp. After dropping
off our backpacks, we headed straight outside to see the magnificent Mt Qomolangma. There it was, the
top of the mountain peeking through the clouds, astonishing us with its unbelievable height. We enjoyed
the mountain waves and saw the beautiful clouds separated until the sunset over the peak, feeling I
would have regretted for the rest of my life if I hadn't made the journey.

Swimming alongside wild dolphins has long been on the Hawaii vacation list. However, scientists
are concerned that increased human activities may do bad to the animals by disturbing a very important
period of their rest. “We have seen changes in their action,” Ann Garrett of NOAA’s National Marine
Fisheries Service said. “They will be more active with people around.”
After feeding in deep water at night, dolphins return to sheltered, shallow(浅的)water to rest
during the day. The problem appears when swimmers draw them out of their resting state, a change in
behavior that NOAA points out “may cause disturbance”.
“Disturbing their resting behaviors can actually affect their long-term health and the health of the
population,” Garrett said. This summer, NOAA is set to put forward its new rules. “NOAA is
considering a lot of measures. These measures may make some people angry, but they will undoubtedly
do good to those dolphins,” Garrett said.
Today, a small number of Hawaii tour companies willingly join in a NOAA program called
Dolphin SMART. Designed to lower the disturbance that dolphins suffer because of human activities to
the minimum(最低限度), the program encourages tourists to stay 50 yards away from dolphins and to
move away carefully if they feel the animals are disturbed.
NOAA’s new rules, however, would not be allowed to be chosen to follow or not, and could affect
over 200 dolphin-related businesses as well as swimmers and other ocean users. Garrett said that new
rules would keep tour companies from disturbing dolphins. “The final goal of the changes,” she said,
“will be to provide more protections for dolphins while still offering a chance for tourists to have a
pleasant wildlife experience”.
C. Effective. D. Confusing.
34. Dolphin SMART is a program designed to _____________.
A. make the most use of dolphins
B. help reduce human disturbance to dolphins
C. let people know how smart dolphins are
D. show how to get close to dolphins in a smart way

Why Do We Find It Hard to Say “No”
As we all know, saying “no” to others is not easy at all. But sometimes we have to learn to say
“no”. 36 The following are common reasons why people find it hard to say “no”.
37 You are a kind soul at heart. You don’t want to turn the person away and you want to
help when possible, even if it may eat into your time.
Afraid of being rude. I was brought up under the idea that saying “no”, especially to people who
are older, is rude. This thinking is common in Asian culture, where face-saving is important. 38
Wanting to be agreeable. You don’t want to alienate(使疏远)yourself from the group because
you're not in agreement. So you agree to others requests.
Fear of conflict(冲突). 39 This might lead to an ugly confrontation(争执).Even if there
isn’t, there might be disagreement which might lead to bad effects in the future.
40 Perhaps you are worried saying “no” means closing doors. For example, one of my
friends’ wives was asked to work in another department in her company. Since she liked her team, she
didn't want to go. However, she didn’t want to say “no” as she felt it would affect her promotion
chances in the future.
A. Wanting to help others.
B. Fear of losing chances.
C. Wanting to keep a good relationship.
D. I slowly realized I needed to learn to say “no”.
E. It means not making others look bad or lose face.
F. You are afraid the person might be angry if you refuse him/her.
G. To learn to say “no”, we have to first understand what’s stopping us from it.

In recent years, many of us spend a lot of time on the Internet with its popularity. As a result,
we don’t write as well as we did in the past. In order to protect our Chinese characters and
improve our handwriting, we’d like to offer some suggestions:
We should spend less time online so that we can have more time to read books. We’d better
form the habit if keeping diaries every day to practice handwriting. Besides, it is better to write
letters to our relatives and friends by hand rather than sent e-mails. Beautiful and neat handwriting
is beneficial to us students. So please pay attention to our handwriting in the future.
