Text analysis What: The text mainly talks about these two athletes’ hardships and achievements during their sports career. After reading the text, students will be able to appreciate the merits of the athletes and build up their confidence as well as persistence when facing the difficulties. Why: The text in this lesson is talking about sportsmanship by introducing two famous athletes - Lang Ping and Michael Jordan. In the text, students are guided to find the detail information and the main idea of the text and finally learn some reading skills. Students can learn from their achievements in sports area, knowing how they act in the field of sports and learning from their deeds. In this way, students will be able to know how to be persistent and brave in daily life when faced with difficulties. How:The text introduces the two athletes’ achievements first and makes students have a overall expression about the athletes. And then it shows the difficulties and solutions on their way to success.
Learner analysis Linguistic achievements: Since the students have learned how to invite a friend to a sports event in the last lesson, they have known a lot of sports events and related words and expressions. However, as freshmen, students don’t know how to read the passage logically and get the main idea quickly. The teacher should guide them as a scaffolding to grasp the main idea as well as catch the detail information. In this lesson, they are able to have a further reading about famous stars and learn the following reading strategies: making prediction, summarizing the whole text by using tables, skimming, scanning, reflecting, and rereading. Cultural and affective state: Students in Senior Grade One do know a little about sport and some of them love sport ; however,they do not realize how hard for those athletes to get the championship or medal. Therefore in this lesson,they can talk about their favourite sports athlete and think about the reason to succeed. Learner situation: Students in this class have solid basic knowledge ,positive attitude and great enthusiasm towards learning. Part of them could express their views fluently. But most they do not have a systematical study about sports.
Teaching objectives Based on the analysis of material and learners, and subject core competencies in General Senior High School Curriculum Standards, teaching objectives are followed: By the end of the class ,students will be able to : Language ability: Through summarizing the experience of these two athletes, students can get the basic information and understand why two of them are chosen as “living legend”. Thinking capacity Students are able to use creative thinking to introduce their favourite athlete. Learning ability: According to the title, pictures and additional information, students are able to make prediction. And based on the question teacher ask, they can find the main idea and deeds of the two athletes quickly by using the reading strategies--skimming and scanning. Cultural awareness: With the interactive model in teaching, students have the type of necessary schema for this reading text and they will be able to appreciate the qualities of athletes and have a positive attitude towards life.

The key point is to enable the students to master the skills of reading, analyzing and communicating and cooperating. In order to solve this key point, the teacher will first let the students to pay more special attention to the title and additional information, then students will have an outline in mind through reading the parallel phrases and fill in the blanks,and finally the teacher will make students have a discussion. It is a good way to practice students’ combined skills.
Difficult points Ways Out
The difficult point is to use the words and expressions learned in this class to express their favourite sports athlete and share what they have know from the two stories. With the aim of solving this difficult point,the teacher will first show some sentence pattern on how to introduce the favourite athlete, in which the teacher plays a role as scaffolding, then students have a group discussion in their favourite athlete, in order to reduce their mental pressure to finish the task.

Stages Teaching activities
Step1 Lead-in (4 minutes) Setting the scene and brainstorming: 1. The teacher shows a video and some pictures about sports stars and asks students a question: Who’s your favourite athlete why 2.And let the students give names of athletes as many as possible in 30 seconds.
Justification: Given the context of sports,students are easier to activate the schema related to the incoming information and already known information. Meanwhile,brainstorming the names in a limited time will arouse their sense of competition and keep an interest on learning.
Step 2 Reading (35 minutes) Pre-reading (4minutes) Look at the pictures,title, the bottom additional information and the new words and make prediction. And answer the question: Who are the living legends (skill 1 : making prediction based on vocabulary) Living legends must be athletes who are masters in their sports and also set good examples for others. Here are our first two living legend --Lang Ping and Michael Jordan.
Justification:predicting is a quite important skill in reading, which makes students’ mind more closer to the theme- sports.

Justification: after using the reading strategies of scanning,skimming and summarizing ,students are able to get the main idea and specific information quickly. Also ,with the help of the information transfer activities-tables, students could comprehend the meaning while reading.
Post-reading (18minutes) 1.Finish the task 2 on page 39 (Rereading the text to get the inferred information) 2.What can we learn from those excellent athletes (never give up,determined,set a good example,persistent, injured,lose heart......) Justification: With these reading strategies and paragraph given ,students have a good chance to communicate and cooperate with their classmates and build up their confidence in speaking English.
Step 3 Homework (1 minutes) Use what you learned in this lesson to introduce your living legend and write a report.
Justification: Reading aloud helps students internalize the knowledge and while revising the text. Writing a report improve their critical thinking ability .
