We journalists live in a new age of storytelling, with many new multimedia tools. Many young people don’t even realize it’s new. For them, it’s just normal.
This hit home for me as I was sitting with my 2-year-old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday. I had brought a children’s book to read. It had simple words and colorful pictures — a perfect match for his age.
Picture this: my grandson sitting on my lap as I hold the book in front so he can see the pictures. As I read, he reaches out and pokes (戳) the page with his finger.
What’s up with that He just likes the pictures, I thought. Then I turned the page and continued. He poked the page even harder. I nearly dropped the book. I was confused: Is there something wrong with this kid
Then I realized what was happening. He was actually a stranger to books. His father frequently amused the boy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colorful pictures that come alive when you poke them. He thought my storybook was like that.
Sorry, kid. This book is not part of your high-tech world. It’s an outdated, lifeless thing. An antique, like your grandfather. Well, I may be old, but I’m not hopelessly challenged, digitally speaking. I edit video and produce audio. I use mobile payment. I’ve even built websites.
There’s one notable gap in my new-media experience, however: I’ve spent little time in front of a camera, since I have a face made for radio. But that didn’t stop China Daily from asking me last week to share a personal story for a video project about the integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province.
Anyway, grandpa is now an internet star — two minutes of fame! I promise not to let it go to my head. But I will make sure my 2-year-old grandson sees it on his tablet.
24.What do the underlined words “hit home for me” mean in paragraph 2
A.Provided shelter for me. B.Became very clear to me.
C.Took the pressure off me. D.Worked quite well on me.
25.Why did the kid poke the storybook

C.Financially independent. D.Digitally competent.

Workers at the National Galleries of Scotland recently experienced quite a surprise after they X-rayed a painting by Vincent van Gogh. Hidden on the back of the painting Head of a Peasant Woman, which Van Gogh completed in 1885, was a self-portrait (自画像) of the Dutch painter. No one had ever found it.
The hidden self-portrait had been covered by glue and cardboard that had been attached to the back of the painting. “It was absolutely exciting,” Lesley Stevenson, the museum’s worker, said about the discovery. “We
weren’t expecting much of the little painting when we performed the scans,” she said. But museum experts quickly changed their expectations when they looked at the X-rays. “We didn’t see much of the peasant woman, but we saw the lead white that Van Gogh used for his face showing up after the X-ray went through the cardboard,” she added.
Van Gogh painted Head of a Peasant Woman as part of a series of works focused on the working-class residents of Nuenen, a small farming community in the southern part of the Netherlands where he lived briefly in the 1880s. The woman in the painting is Gordina de Groot, a farm worker. She wears a white headpiece. In a letter that Van Gogh penned about the series in 1885 to Anton Kerssemakers, a friend, he described his excitement at his working-class subjects. “I’m working with great pleasure these days, for I would rather paint people than paint anything else,” he wrote.
Van Gogh also loved creating self-portraits, producing about 20 paintings of himself by the end of his life while he was living in Paris. Recreating his own image was a cheap way for him to practice portraiture as he didn't
have to spend money hiring models, according to a report.
Art historians at the National Galleries hope that the hidden self-portrait may help us understand the life of the artist. The museum is currently considering how to best remove the unwanted protective materials without harming the painting.
28. What can be learned about the self-portrait on the back of the painting
A. It isn’t in very good condition. B. It describes a well-known woman.

A. It was a wonderful surprise. B. It failed to meet her expectations.
C. It was the result of her great efforts. D. It deepened her understanding of Van Gogh’s life.
30. What did Van Gogh tell his friend in the letter
A. He was encouraged to try different subjects.
B. He was glad to find his love for figure paintings.

During an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction (干扰) in his open office, he said, “That’s why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street — so I can focus”. His comment struck me as strange. After all, coworking spaces also typically use an open office layout(布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his approach works.
The researchers examined various levels of noise on participants as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups and exposed to various noise levels in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels (分贝), 70 decibels, and 85 decibels. The differences between most of the groups were statistically insignificant; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group — those exposed to a level of noise similar to background chatter in a coffee shop — significantly outperformed the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise.
But since the results at 70 decibels were significant, the study also suggests that the right level of background noise — not too loud and not total silence — may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise may interrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to wander, without making it impossible to focus. This kind of “distracted focus” appears to be the best state for working on creative tasks.
So why do so many of us hate our open offices The problem may be that, in our offices, we can’t stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face interactions and conversations affect the creative process, and yet a coworking space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions.
32.Why does the interviewer prefer a coworking space
A.It helps him concentrate. B.It blocks out background noise.
C.It has a pleasant atmosphere. D.It encourages face-to-face interactions.
33.Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability
A.Total silence. B.50 decibels C.70 decibels. D.85 decibels.
34.What makes an open office unwelcome to many people
A.Personal privacy unprotected. B.Limited working space.
C.Restrictions on group discussion. D.Constant interruptions.
35.What can we infer about the author from the text
A.He’s a news reporter. B.He’s an office manager.
C.He’s a professional designer. D.He’s a published writer.
第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Some people prefer to have a bite to eat before hitting the gym, known as a fed workout. Others would like to wait until after exercising to refuel their bodies, called a fasted workout. 36 Many experts say there’s no easy answer because it depends on the person.
If you want energy and strength for an ideal workout, you need fuel. A fed workout will provide your body with power. Eating before exercise may help you sustain longer sessions and lift heavier weights. 37 Muscle preservation is also an essential component of strengthening your body. Nitrogen (氮) is critical for processing protein that builds healthy muscles. People tend to lose less nitrogen during a fed workout than a fasted one.
Many fitness enthusiasts are not on board with this idea. They report feeling sick and inactive while trying to exercise after eating. With a fasted workout, you may not get the usual indigestion. Experts for fasted workouts further claim that eating afterwards makes your body use its fat reserves for energy, meaning you will burn more fat. 38 It can cause a sudden drop in your blood glucose (葡萄糖) levels, and you may feel dizzy. You may even be more likely to overeat.
39 Not all foods are created equal. For example, if you choose a fed workout, you’ll probably lose a lot of water during an intense training, so you should consider drinking some beforehand. With a fasted workout, it would help if you had some nutrition right after your session is complete. Drink some water. Then, have a light meal or nutritional snack.
Deciding when to eat for an ideal workout is a personal choice. Both fasted workouts and fed activities have their benefits and shortcomings. 40
A.However, a fasted workout might not work for you.
B.How your body will respond is based on your workout intensity.
C.These benefits can result in burning more fat and shaping a slimmer body.
D.To eat or not to eat, that is the question on many fitness enthusiasts’ minds.
E.Think thoroughly and discuss with your fitness instructor before taking a choice.
F.Knowing what to eat for an ideal workout is just as important as knowing when to eat.
G.A person doing a 30-minute session a day may not have a problem with fasted workouts.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Do you mind if I join you ” I asked the two women seated at the table. As a new employee, I felt awkward about approaching them, but there were no other seats in the dining hall. Then I introduced myself and sat down. The two women nodded to me and continued chatting.
While eating my lunch, suddenly I was shocked by one of the women’s words. She said, “My family has decided to give up our dog and let her live on her own. She just can’t fit into our family. And no one wants her.”
Coming from a family whose home could be a petting zoo, I was shocked to think that people could be so heartless. Feeling concerned about the dog, I asked my new co-worker a few questions about the dog. She shared that the dog’s name was Lady. She had trained as a guide dog for the blind, but she failed her final test because she wanted too many hugs after completing her tasks.
I asked the woman to give me some time to contact my mom as we would consider adopting her. Since my mom had a kind heart, I knew she would agree and that Lady would have a home with us. After work, I drove to pick up Lady. An old woman greeted me at the door, leading me to the kitchen. There sat this beautiful but very thin dog, lying in the corner and licking (舔) her right paw. “She did that to herself,” the woman said as she pointed to the injured paw. She continued, “That dog is hopeless!” The woman then took a broom and forced Lady to stand with the broom. There were no goodbyes from this family, just a sense of relief because Lady was no longer their problem.
I sat on the sidewalk with her and introduced myself. For me, it was love at first sight. She had a beautiful face, but the saddest eyes. “Lady,” I said. “I’m taking you to your new home. And I promise you that my family will always love you. Please give us a chance.” I helped Lady get into my car, and our new journey began.
Paragraph 1:As I pulled into our driveway, my mom was waiting with open arms and delicious dog treats. Paragraph 2:One day, my mom did something magic which made Lady start to open her heart.

My Favorite Movie
The movie I adore most is The Million Pound Bank Note, which is based upon a story by Mark Twain.
In the movie, Henry Adams, the main character, landed in England by accident with no money or friends. By chance, he is made the subject of a bet by two wealthy brothers on whether someone could live in London for a month with a million pound bank note. With the large bank note, Henry finds that people’s attitudes towards him change greatly. The film, with excellent acting, beautiful music and interesting plots, is a real success.
I liked the play because of some exciting twists and turns. I also learned that success is not measured by how much money you have. It is totally worth seeing.
第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
As I pulled into our driveway, my mom was waiting with open arms and delicious dog treats. We led Lady to our house where my mom had placed a comfortable dog bed on the floor for her, and then treated her injuries. When my mom heard about the old woman with the broom, she asked us to hide every broom in the house. Days passed. While my mom made more generous moves to Lady, she remained distant and seldom left her bed. This challenge between my mom and Lady went on for a few discouraging weeks.
Paragraph 2:
One day, my mom did something magical which made Lady start to open her heart. With no one else in the kitchen, my mom sat on the floor, talking one-on-one with Lady. Hours passed, and both of them walked out of the kitchen. When I asked my mom how this miracle happened, she joked, “Just a girl talk about acceptance in dog language!” It was as though Lady felt warmth and love from my mom and understood her words. From then on, we had a playmate who shared our laughs, tears and hugs.

M: What inspired you to be a teacher, Miss Johnson
W: Well, I’ve always loved to learn, but I’ve enjoyed teaching others even more. It’s in the family.
M: Could you tell us what the best part about your job is
W: Getting to know all of the different kids and communicating with them. I have always loved kids.
So, I will always enjoy that part of my job.
M: Then, what do you hope to achieve by being a teacher
W: My goal is to help my students develop awareness of their strengths, weaknesses, and learning needs, and to enable them to learn throughout their lives.
M: That sounds great.

M: Hi, Marina. Can I ask a few questions
W: Yes, sure, go ahead.
M: As a photographer, you are quite successful. Can you tell me who can become a photographer
W: Anyone can become a photographer, as long as you want it. It’s not like you need a degree or certificate or anything. Yes, I’ve been planning to take photography classes in an art school in the UK, but before this, I’d already been working as a photographer for years — I started by using my phone in junior high. Some of my photographer friends do other jobs at the same time — they are music makers, vloggers and directors.
M: What does a photographer usually do
W: There are different kinds of photographers and our lives and work can be quite different, too. A National Geographic kind of photographer may travel to different places, taking photos of architecture, landscapes and animals. But fashion photographers like me, mainly do two things — commercial shoots and our own creative projects. The former is for making money and offering service to customers. The latter is for expression — we post these photos on our own social media, submit them to media outlets and contests, or host photographic exhibitions to show them off.
M: What makes a good photographer
W: For commercial shooting, there are some routines that we can follow and the most important thing is to meet the needs of our customers. For our own shoots, what matters most is that you have something that you want to express, and these things can be received or understood by a certain group of people who think similarly.
M: Thanks for having given the interview.

Recently, an AI powered chatbot called ChatGPT has drawn lots of attention. It becomes popular because it is able to understand human language and respond in a simple style. It can answer questions, take part in discussions, and even provide helpful suggestions. Since it came out on November 30th, 2022, ChatGPT has been used to write books, essays and films. It has also been able to write computer code for websites. ChatGPT was created to help people better communicate with machines and to make it easier to get information quickly. ChatGPT works by taking in large amounts of text data from a variety of sources. This allows the system to learn how language works and how to understand humans better than any other AI system. It can create suitable responses based on a person’s needs. All in all, ChatGPT is a powerful tool that will make it easier for people to communicate with machines and robots.
