Teachers' Day
Teachers’ Day recognizes the important work of China’s educators. It’s an opportunity for Chinese schoolchildren to express a meaningful gesture of gratitude to their teachers.
The Basics
The modern Teachers’ Day was established by the Chinese government in 1985. Though teaching is a historically respected profession in China dating back to Confucius, the government created this holiday in part to reestablish teaching’ s prestige after the degradation of intellectual pursuits during the Cultural Revolution.
When is Teachers’ Day
Teachers’ Day takes place every year on September 10. There is no time off granted for Teachers’ Day.
[N-UNCOUNT]If a person, a country, or an organization has prestige, they are admired and respected because of the position they hold or the things they have achieved. 威望
What is Teachers’ Day
Due to the traditional importance of education in China, Teachers’ Day is an especially significant holiday that symbolizes the profound respect that Chinese society has for educators and scholarship.
During this holiday, many Chinese schools host customary ceremonies honoring teachers that are reminiscent of ancient Confucian rituals. Teachers also often receive gifts from school administrators, parents, and current and former students. Some educators even get the day off.
[N-VAR]A ritual is a religious service or other ceremony which involves a series of actions performed in a fixed order.
Origins
It was not until 1985, when the ninth session of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National People's Congress passed the State Council's proposal on the establishment of teacher's day, that it was truly decided that September 10 every year should be the teacher's day.
The first teachers' Day was celebrated in Beijing on September 10, 1985. September 10, 2023 is the 39th teachers' day in China.
Origins
The history of Teacher's Day traces back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). According to record, during the Han (202 BC–AD 220) and Jin (1115-1234) dynasties, on August 27 each year, the birthday of Confucius, the emperor would go to Confucius' temple and pay tribute to the ancient philosopher followed by court officials, and would also invite royal teachers to the imperial court for a banquet.
Confucius, China’s first teacher
Confucius (551-479 BCE), known as 孔子 (Kǒngzǐ) in Chinese, was born in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-481 BCE) in modern day Shandong Province. His parents were neither peasants nor aristocrats, but belonged to a middle class of common gentry called 士 (shì).
During this period, formal education was generally available only to children from elite families and consisted of a curriculum in the six arts (六艺 liùyì), that is, rituals (礼仪 lǐyí), music (音乐 yīnyuè), archery (射箭 shèjiàn), chariot driving (驾车 jiàchē), literacy (识字 shìzì) and mathematics (计算 jìsuàn).

Happy Teachers' Day !Culture Insider: Teachers' Day in ancient China
Today is the 39th Chinese Teachers' Day – a festival celebrating the 2,300-year tradition of respecting teachers and education in China. It's similar to the birthday of Confucius or the birthday of private school tutor in ancient China.
Local officials followed the court, and on this day, teachers around the nation enjoyed a day's vacation and were given dried meat as gifts.
The capital, all states and counties would also stage sacrificial ceremonies to worship Confucius, with local chiefs or the emperor leading rituals. Excellent-performed teachers would be chosen from academies and learning institutions nationwide, reporting to the royal court and given 500 liang (两) silver coins as awards.
Until the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the sacrificial ceremony, on August 27, was of a larger scale. The teachers' salaries in schools and academies around the nation were raised, and well-performing teachers would be conferred official titles or promoted to higher positions.
How were gifts presented to teachers in ancient China
Normally, an ancient teacher's income included salary, accommodation and festival gifts. There was no fixed tuition fee, generally the parents paid teachers according to their household income. Both money and basic foodstuff could be paid in exchange for tuition.
In private schools, teachers always received money or gifts from the host family at certain festivals or at the beginning and end of each semester.
The festivals in which teachers received gifts varied from region to region, while the most valued ones were the Duanwu, Mid-autumn and Chinese New Year festivals, as well as Confucius' birthday and the private tutor's birthday.
Among all the gift-giving festivals, the first meeting gift was a must. When students met their private tutors for the first time, they had to kneel down to Confucius' spirit tablet and then to their private tutor, before presenting a "gift".
