日记是应用文考查的常用文体之一。英语日记和汉语日记一样是以记叙一天生活中所见、所闻、所做、所思或对将来的打算等为内容的一种应用文文体。日记内容可以包括记事、议论、描写及抒情等。记事型是用英语记述当天自己生活学习中发生的事情;议论型是对生活中的某一事件、现象或情况发表议论;描写型或抒情型则是对某人物、事物的特征做细致的描述,或针对某事物抒发自己的情感。英语日记的内容要求表达清楚,记叙准确,行文连贯。正文中的人和事物都应该是真人真事,抒发的情感应该是真情实感,议论的观点要有理有据。

规范的格式:英语日记通常由两部分组成,即书端和正文。书端用于记载写日记的日期、星期和天气情况,它位于正文的上面。日期和星期写在左上角,顶格写起,通常写法是:先写月、日、年,再写星期几, 也可先写星期几。月可以用缩写形式;日可以用基数词,也可以用序数词; 年可以省略, 但是星期不可以用缩写形式。天气情况写在右上角,表示天气情况的词语用形容词,首字母必须大写,如:Fine (晴朗的),Hot (炎热的),Cold (寒冷的),Cool (凉爽的),Snowy (下雪的),Foggy (有雾的),Windy (有风的),Rainy (下雨的)等。日记的小标题写在下一行,也可省略不写。

正确的人称: 日记是对生活的记录,是把自己一天中最有意义的事情记录下来所形成的书面材料, 故写日记多用第一人称。
正确的时态: 写日记的时间一般是在下午、晚上,有时也可以在第二天补写,因此多用过去时; 但如记述天气、描写景色以及谈论个人感悟或说明客观事实、普遍真理时也可用现在时; 如展望未来,说明以后的计划或打算时则用将来时。
