本文按照“现象—原因—危害—措施”的逻辑顺序展开,环环相扣,步步深入。标题Climate Change Requires the World’s Attention点明了作者的诉求:气候变化对地球生态系统的影响是巨大的,需要全人类共同关注和面对。文本以现在时态和将来时态为主,强调文章的现实意义及对将来不利后果的预测。
P1.We have known about climate change for decades. There is little doubt that Earth is getting warmer and warmer (see the graph). A warming ocean and atmosphere along with melting ice and rising sea levels provide evidence of a dramatic change in the global climate.

In P2.2013, a lot of people were shocked by a news photo of a dead polar bear that was found on Norway's Arctic island of Svalbard. According to the scientists who found its dead body, all that remained of the polar bear was "skin and bones". An expert who has studied polar bears for many years said that from the position of its dead body, the bear appeared to have starved and died. Experts claimed that low sea-ice levels caused by climate change meant the bear could not hunt seals as before, so it had to travel greater distances in order to find food. This alarming case showed how the increase in temperature had an impact on Earth's ecology.
Summarize the example of the increase in temperature that had an impact on Earth’s ecology.
Time Where What happened How did it happen
2013 ______________ _______________ _________________________
Norway’s Arctic island of Svalbard
A bear
starved and died.
The bear couldn’t hunt seals as before due to the increase in temperature.
P3.Then what is causing the increase in the global average surface temperature Climate scientists often mention a key climate process called the "greenhouse effect", which has two common meanings: the "natural" greenhouse effect and the "man-made" greenhouse effect. The "natural" greenhouse effect refers to the fact that heat from the sun enters the atmosphere and warms Earth's surface as short-wave radiation. The heat is released back into space at longer wave lengths. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as methane and carbon dioxide, trap some of the heat, keeping Earth's climate warm and habitable. Without this process, Earth could not sustain life. However, the "man-made" greenhouse effect has now become a big problem. When people produce huge amounts of extra greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels, more heat energy is trapped in the atmosphere and causes Earth's surface temperature to rise quickly.

Draw a diagram to show how the “greenhouse effect” works.
Draw a diagram
Diagrams are very useful tools that can be used to brainstorm ideas, map out processes, show cause and effect relationships, explain a new idea or concept, and so on. When you read an essay about scientific issues, you can try drawing a diagram, which will not only allow you to visualise the problems more clearly but also can help demonstrate your creative thinking and problem-solving.
P4.There is strong and comprehensive evidence that the rise in temperature has led to an increase in extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide, not only causing serious damage, but also costing human lives. Climate scientists have warned that if we do not take appropriate actions, this warming trend will probably continue and there will be a higher price to pay. In fact, news reports are frequently broadcast about extreme rainstorms and heatwaves causing deaths and economic losses.
What are the consequences of global temperature rise
Finish the mind map.
The rise in temperature

P5.Continued greenhouse gas emissions will result in further warming and long-lasting changes to the global climate. This requires the attention of people all over the world. Governments need to consider making policies and taking appropriate actions and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We as individuals can also reduce our "carbon footprint" by restricting the amount of carbon dioxide our lifestyles produce. It is our responsibility to seize every opportunity to educate everyone about global warming, along with its causes and impacts, because this is the most serious issue affecting all of us on this planet. So what will you do to help
What are the solutions to the environmental problems
Post Reading
1.Recall the text to answer the questions.
1.What happened to the polar bear in the photo Why did the writer write about it
The polar bear in the photo died of starvation. The writer wrote about it because it showed one of the effects of rising temperatures due to climate change.
2. Why is the "natural" greenhouse effect important and necessary
The “natural” greenhouse effect is important because it warms the Earth’s surface and keeps it habitable.
3. What are the consequences of high greenhouse gas emissions
High greenhouse gas emissions lead to more heat energy being trapped in the atomosphere and rising temperatures.
4. Why did the author mention the climate scientists' warning
The author mentioned the climate scientists’ warning because it is essential that we take action and so it needs to be brought to everyone’s attention.
5. What is the author's purpose of writing this text
The author’s purpose is to inform the readers and inspire them to do whatever they can to deal with this problem.
There is little doubt 1._____ our earth is becoming warmer and warmer. The increase in temperature has a great impact 2._____Earth's ecology. Then what has led to the phenomenon
It's a key climate process called the “greenhouse effect”,3.______ includes the “natural” greenhouse and the “man made” greenhouse effect. The former is essential because it keeps Earth's climate warm and 4. ________(habitat).But the “man made” greenhouse effect, often 5.______ (cause) by burning fossil fuels, makes more heat energy trapped in the atmosphere and 6.______(lead) to the rise in temperature. In turn, the rise has led to an increase in extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide, causing serious damage as well as 7._______ (cost) human lives.
So it requires the attention of people all over the world. Not only do governments need to consider making policies and taking appropriate measures 8._________(reduce) greenhouse gas emissions, but we individuals make to reduce our “carbon footprint” by 9.__________ (restrict) the amount of carbon dioxide our lifestyles produce.Of course,10.___ is our responsibility to seize every opportunity to educate everyone about global warming, along with its causes and impacts.

2.Fill in the blanks to complete the summary
As a student, what can we do to reduce “carbon footprint” in our daily life
litter

Thinking
A carbon footprint is historically defined as"the total set of greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event, product or person", usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2e).
1.How can we understand “carbon footprint”
2.Discuss in groups:what can we individules do to help reduce “carbon footprint”
Turn off the lights, computers etc. the moment you don’t need them.
Sort out the garbage
Use renewable energies
Stop using plastic bags
Use the minimum paper, backing paper etc.
Take green transportation
Take a shower instead of a bath
plant more trees
Take the stairs instead of elevator
Only by changing the way we treat the environment can we get along well with it. Only by saving the environment can we save ourselves.
Lucid waters and lush mountains are valuable as "mountains of gold and silver".
青山绿水就是金山银山。
If we don't save water, the last drop of water will be our tear.
如果我们不节约用水,那么最后一滴水将会是我们的眼泪。
When the sky becomes blue again and the rivers become clean, we'll live a healthier and happier life.
当天空再次变得湛蓝,河水变得清洁,我们会过上更健康、更快乐的生活。
3.Let’s keep the words in mind.
