There are certain things on the Earth that we must not lose. The great animal migration across the plains of the Serengeti or the towering pyramids of Egypt are such examples. Every country can be proud of its cultural or natural heritage sites, which must be protected, so that we can enjoy them today and allow future generations to know where they come from.
We are lucky to have UNESCO to oversee such an important task. It sees heritage as “our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations” as well as “irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration”.
The incredible splendour of heritage sites is a reminder of the power of nature and the genius of man. As a national park and nature reserve, Jiuzhaigou Valley, just north of the Sichuan Basin, is home to mighty snow-capped mountains, thick forests alive with wildlife, impressive waterfalls and lakes so blue that they take our breath away. This dreamlike scenery makes us realize that nature has truly created a masterpiece.
Similarly, standing in the shadow of the Borobudur Temple, as the sun rises over this grand historic building, we are impressed with the effort, determination and intense belief of the people who built it with only primitive tools. It is in places like these that we cannot help but be humbled, come to understand our limitations as human beings, and know that our duty is to protect them for future generations.
Heritage sites not only often provide answers to questions, but also often pose questions to which there are no definitive answers at the moment. They do, however, provide us with opportunities to wonder, to be inspired and to think more deeply about our time on the Earth. As Cicero remarked, “To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child.”

2. How do you understand the quote from Cicero
From my point of view, Cicero’s quote means that knowing about our past helps us understand the present and the future better. If we were ignorant of our past, our knowledge about cultural and natural environments would be lacking. We would lose vital information that could help us become better by not repeating past mistakes. We would also not appreciate all the efforts and struggles of the people that came before us.

Host: Hello! On today’s show we’re talking about ways to protect our
cultural and natural heritage sites. I’m here with an expert in the field
of heritage protection. Welcome to our show, Mr Li. In my opinion,
making laws is a good way to protect the heritage sites at the
national level. What ideas do you have for protecting the world’s
heritage sites
Mr Li: Hi, and thank you for having me here today. I think one important
measure we can take is to limit the number of tourists to our
heritage sites. This way, it’ll be easier to preserve them for future
generations.
Host: Thank you for that, Mr Li. When you mention limiting the number of
tourists, what’s your suggestion
Measures to limit the number of tourists
Mr Li: Online booking can help deal with massive tourism at the site level.
We’ll allow tickets to be purchased in advance through an app or on
the websie.
Host: What else can we do to limit the number of tourists
Mr Li: We can set strict time limits on how long tourists can spend visiting
the heritage sites on a daily basis.
Host: It seems to me that limits alone won’t be enough to ensure the safety
of these sites. Would you agree
Mr Li: Absolutely. We also need a lot of resources. If we want to restore
damaged sites, we need money and equipment. We also need
scientists and engineers, as well as experts in many other fields. A
big part of my job is to raise funds for our local heritage projects.
Host: Anything else

Resources
Mr Li: Another critical step is to educate the general public about the
importance of heritage sites. For example, this could involve
launching campaigns, setting up websites and giving out leaflets. We
can also give advice to local officials on how to manage them
properly. Every little thing helps!

with others
Useful Expression:
I think we’ve talked enough about this point.
Maybe we could move on to ...
I think there’s nothing more to talk about this aspect.
Let’s change the topic to ...
Possible Answer
A: Let’s discuss the importance of protecting heritage sites first. I think
heritage sites are a reminder of the power of nature and the genius of
man.
B: Absolutely right. Natural heritage sites amaze us with their splendour
and command our respect for nature, and cultural heritage sites can
connect us with the past.
A: Yes. I think we’ve talked enough about this point. Maybe we could
move on to discussing some useful measures.
B: OK. In my opinion, even if UNESCO does declare a place as a
site, it offers little protection especially if local communities do not take
ownership to preserve their heritage.
A: I agree with you. Local communities should take some measures. For
instance, limiting the number of visitors to these sites and regulating
how often or how long they’re open to visitors are the first step in the
right direction. Can you add anything
B: Yes, I can. Activities like fundraising events can help contribute towards
resources required to carry out any restoration and preservation projects.
A: I definitely agree! I’m also thinking how little is being done to educate
the general public about their importance. The public might be unaware
of the dangers that heritage sites are facing. We need to ensure everyone
becomes a part of the solution rather than the problem.
B: Yes, but let’s change the topic to what effective methods can raise
public awareness. I think one is to launch awareness campaigns about
the dangers to these vulnerable sites and also how to prevent those
dangers. Do you have any other ideas
A: Yes, I do. Most people use the Internet nowadays, so it’ll be extremely
helpful to set up easily accessible and informative websites about the
topic.
B: That’s a great idea. I know that if we all work together to take care of
our heritage sites, future generations will get to enjoy them too.

Possible Answer
Heritage sites are a reminder of the power of nature and the genius of man. Natural heritage sites amaze us with their splendour and command our respect for nature. Cultural heritage sites can connect us with the past. It reminds us of our achievements and links us to the great story of human history. Preserving our heritage sites allows us to appreciate the past and to find inspiration for the future.
In order to preserve heritage sites successfully, we could put in place some of the following measures. First, we should limit the number of visitors to vulnerable sites and regulate how often or how long the sites are open to visitors. This measure may help reduce the damage that might be caused due to uncontrolled tourist flow. This measure is possible if tickets for the sites need to be purchased or booked in advance. In this way, the site
authorities can keep a watchful eye on the sites and manage them better. Second, we need to invest more money in the projects about the restoration and preservation of local heritage to help maintain project resources such as essential equipment.
Last but not the least, we have to educate the general public about the importance of heritage sites, the dangers they face and the methods to protect them. Effective ways to do this could include launching awareness campaigns and setting up informative websites. The public might be unaware of the dangers that heritage sites are facing, so making this information available to them will encourage them to become a part of the solution rather than the problem.
In conclusion, every heritage site is unique and has a special cultural or physical significance. Humans are the guardians of these irreplaceable
treasures, so it is in the interest of our legacy to do our job with pride. I hope that we can all work together to take care of our heritage and preserve it so that future generations can look back at us in admiration for a job well done. Our world will be all the richer for it.
