Raj Patel was 5, traveling with his family to India from England.A young girl, no older than 12, approached their car, carrying a crying baby, begging for money and food. “My parents embarrassingly pushed some money out to her from the window," Patel says. “Since then, the journey has been to figure out why this stuff happens.”
Upon returning to England, Patel decided to rent out his toys and raise money to stop hunger. It didn't take him long to realize his attempts would not fix the problem. While attending Oxford University, Patel had an idea to shift his major to mathematics, believing that mathematics could handle the crisis of hunger and poverty (贫困).But as he dived deeper into the topic, he learned the political and systemic side of the story. So he changed his undergraduate degree back to economics and added the study of philosophy and politics to his pursuits (事业).
After graduation, he worked for the World Bank and the United Nations. But even that, he says, didn't lead to workable
solutions (解决方案).
His first book, Stuffed and Starved, was a breakout work written for a general audience. While living in Africa, Patel created a number of documentaries but none gained much popularity until he met Anita Chitaya, an activist in Bwabwa, a remote village in Malawi. Anita works with a local organization that has fought hunger in Malawi for decades. She helps farmers to experiment with crops to grow more nutritious food. Her story evolved into an 11-year project -The Ants&the Grasshopper, which earned the Moving Mountains Award.
As the decade of research, filming and editing carries on, this drought-stricken village goes from being.self-sufficient through sustainable farming practices to struggling to grow enough nutritious food and access clean, drinkable water. Climate change ended up being another part of the story.
Patel knows that he needs to find other ways to reach audiences. He released a widely shared YouTube video about capitalism, chicken nuggets (鸡块) and the global hunger crisis. He's given 20-minute TED Talks that summarize the intentions of his books. No matter what gets thrown his way, Patel seems to course-correct in order to continue pursuing his mission.
What excited Patel’s pursuit of his career
A beggar-led crowd.
A fund-raising event.
A chance encounter with a needy girl.
A narrow escape from a car accident.
Why did Patel shift his major to mathematics
He felt he was good at it.
He disliked boring economic theories.
He was eager to learn its political and systemic side.
He considered it as a solution to the hunger and poverty crisis. 26.What is The Ants & the Grasshopper mainly about
Anita's journey to tackle food crisis.
Causes of climate change in Malawi.
Bwabwa's remarkable transformation.
Patel's personal experience in Bwabwa.
What did Patel do to attract more attention to global hunger
He shot funny videos.
He made presentations.
He cut the price of his books.
He conducted collaborative research.

Ships are among the world's biggest polluters. To replace them means finding alternatives to traditional diesel( 柴油 )engines. With climate change at the front of the industry's mind, companies are testing the waters with game-changing solutions.
You might think a cargo(货物) sailboat is something out of a history book, but in fact, they are actually the result of years of cutting-edge research and development. French company Grain de Sail claims to have created the first modern sailboat that meets the merchant fleet(商船队) requirements.“Before steam engines and fuel engines existed, all transportation was by sail.
But we used modern methods when designing this ship to make it much more efficient,” says Xavier Demeulenaere, regional
director of Grain de Sail ahead of the crew's transatlantic journey.
The company that makes chocolate and coffee from Latin American beans built its sailboats with the environment in mind
--like its specially designed 50-tonne cargo hold with climate control powered by solar and wind energy. Fran ois Le Naourès, a sailor and crew member says:“We showed our methods to be economically workable, and we are ready to go even further into the future, with perhaps a much larger fleet of boats, we hope.”
Relying on the wind to reduce emissions is a growing trend in the shipping industry. Other projects for the shipping industry are in the pipeline. The transport company Alizés is building a ship equipped with mechanical wingsails to transport “ Ariane 6 ” rocket parts from Europe to its launch site in French Guiana.Another developer, Airseas, has put forward an automated kite system aiming to reduce fuel consumption and emissions of the ship by 10% to 40%.
Passenger boats however need to go fast and can't rely on wind energy alone. In Stavanger, Norway's “ capital of oil ” , passenger boat services are saying goodbye to fossil fuels.
Celebrated as the “Ship of the year", the Medstraum is the world's first 100% electric high-speed ship. The batteries are safely arranged on top, powering two electric motors. This technology is going to be really helpful for meeting Norway's
increasingly strict environmental regulations, which require all future ferries to be zero and / or low-emission.
What goal is Grain de Sail trying to reach
To make multi-purpose sailboats.
To build sailboats based on history books.
To increase the speed of fuel-powered boats.
To reduce the pollution of merchant shipping.
What can be inferred about the company from Fran ois Le Naourès's words
A. It's ambitious. B. It's conservative.
C. It's highly profitable. D. It's commercially sensitive.
What does the underlined part “in the pipeline” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Kept secret. B. Being developed.
C. Brought to a stop. D. Being highly spoken of. 31.What does the author think of the Medstraum
It's a belated (迟来的) gift to people in Stavanger.
It's bringing down the cost of ferry services.
It's an active response to Norway's regulations.
It's changing the decisions of the Norwegian government.
D
We might think of our eye color as one of our defining physical features, as personal to us as the shape of our nose. But, surprisingly, our eye color doesn’t always remain constant throughout our lives.
Evidence suggests whether a baby's eye color changes or not depends a lot on the color itself. One study led by American researcher Cassie Ludwig tracked 148 babies born at a hospital in California, recording their iris (虹膜) color at birth. Over half of the babies were born with brown eyes, and less than one-third with blue. Two years later, the researchers found of the 40 blue-eyed babies in the study, l1 had brown eyes by the age of two, three had hazel (浅赤褐色的), and two had green. Of the 77 brown-eyed newborns, almost all (73) still had brown eyes at the age of two.
But why do blue eyes change more The answer may be found in the fact that when the babies' eyes did change color, they tended to become darker, not lighter. In Ludwig's study, one-third of the babies' eyes changed color in their first two years, with the most common change being eyes becoming darker. The trend towards darkening may be due to the build-up of a protective
pigment (色素) in the irises -- but more on this later.
Such relatively common, healthy color change is mostly limited to early childhood. In another study in the US, which tracked more than 1,300 twins from babyhood to adulthood, eye color usually stopped changing by the age of six. Among non-identical twins, eye color was more likely to change than among identical twins.
Sometimes color changes can be seen in hair in newborns throughout childhood.“Some babies are born with blonde hair,
but they've got quite dark brown hair when they become older, ” says Australian researcher David Mackey.“ That's probably because the pigment in your hair can increase gradually over time." It may be a similar story for eye color, he suggests, with greater quantities of pigment -- the main pigment in the eyes is melanin ( 黑 色 素 ) -- building up in the months or years after
birth.
What was the finding of Ludwig and her colleagues
Babies' iris colors are likely to remain unchanged.
US babies are more likely to be born with blue eyes.
Brown eyes are likely to become several other colors.
Blue eyes are more likely to change color than brown eyes.
During the color change, what causes the babies' eyes to become darker
The growth of a pigment in the iris.
Unhealthy diet among two-year-olds.
The interaction of different colors.
The exposure of eyes to light.
Why does the author mention the study involving over 1,300 twins
To prove twins' eyes are more likely to change color.
To show how long eye color change will continue.
To explain why eye color change is common among babies.
To stress non-identical twins' eyes often change color in later life.
How is the last paragraph mainly developed
A. By giving descriptions. B. By following time order.
C. By making a comparison. D. By offering some examples.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to get a good letter of recommendation
Your professors are often asked to write hundreds of letters of recommendation during teaching in colleges. 36 , they do play a key role in helping employers get an idea of an applicant's personality, persistence, and passion. Here are four points to keep in mind when it comes to asking for letters of recommendation.
37 .Ideally, the letter writer will know you well and have plenty of positive things to say without much make-up. But it never hurts to share your personal statement that includes your accomplishments and passions. After all,it's you that know how to let your highlights stand out.
Don't tell your professor what to say. This one is a little tricky, because it seems to contradict the tip above. 38 ,but avoid telling him exactly what to write. Professors know how to pen an effective letter of recommendation well.
Don't ask for a letter at the last minute. Rule of thumb: Give the professor at least a few months' notice. Remember, your professor will spend quite a while composing the letter of recommendation,so express your request in a respectful, appreciative and thoughtful way. A last minute request will annoy the professor, and it may also lead to a sub-standard letter. 39
Express your gratitude.A thoughtful letter of recommendation takes time. 40 professors write dozens of recommendations,if not more. Be sure to let them know that you appreciate their time and effort. Don't risk ending up with a regret by forgetting to send a handwritten note with a sincere thank you.
A.Nobody wins in such a hurry B.Expose a real yourself accordingly
Maintain a good relationship with them
And chances are you aren't the only one asking E.Give the professor a broad outline about your request
While these letters may not be as important as test scores
Because the employers care much about the recommendation

My Best Teaching Experience
Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class
discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his past: about how many times he
had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own ” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can’t remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a
week’s suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler’s anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week
would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.
续写要求:

请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him.

My View on Beauty
Nowadays, many people are doing plastic surgery and wearing excessive make-up to pursuit
outward beauty. Some attempt to boost their confidence by removing freckles, changing the
jawline or doubling eyelid. My roommates even acknowledge a stereotype that bizarre clothes
from head to toe , skinny figure and exquisite lipstick are the real beauty.
I think they misjudge the beauty. As for beauty,I hold the opinion that an ordinary girl with
righteous personality is more graceful than a beautiful girl with monstrous manner.
All in all, we should make an effort for true beauty by improving our inner qualities.
67. 读后续写
参考范文:
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him. At last he came, walking with
his hands in his pockets. That image immediately brought back memories of the boy throwing a
tantrum in class the other day. Yet I managed to restrain my anger this time. These past few days, I
had been building a wall between us with blame and punishment, so I thought to myself that
maybe I should try another way. “I want to apologize for the quarrel that we had in the middle of
class, and I’m really sorry if it hurt your feelings,” I said, finally breaking the ice.
A spark of surprise flashed across his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with
wide eyes. It was clear that he had never heard an apology from a teacher before. “It is I who
should say sorry,” he murmured, his face burning with shame. “I should have learned to control
myself.” With a smile, I stepped forward and patted him on his shoulder, signaling to him to go
back to his seat. In the days that followed, Tyler didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an
active part in class discussions. I had never expected “understanding” could make such a huge
difference — it turned one of my worst teaching experiences into perhaps the best one.
