Fun Fall Weekend Getaways
Gulf Shores, Alabama
Alabama’s Gulf Shores is attractive year-round, but the fall months bring fewer crowds and more affordable prices on hotels. Head to Gulf Shores for warm ocean waters and lovely whites and beaches that you may have all to yourself. There’s also plenty to do at this beach destination outside of playing in the sand and surfing. For example, you can visit a downtown music bar.
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Albuquerque’s amazing landscapes provide an enjoyment for visitors year-round. However visiting in fall allows you to enjoy the famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which takes place in October. Book a trip in early October to see hundreds of brightly colored balloons dot the sky—you can even take a balloon ride yourself. Because this hot air balloon festival is such a popular event, you’ll want to secure accommodations well in advance.
Laconia, New Hampshire
You may not have heard of Laconia before. This small New Hampshire city is mostly known for its incredible fall festivals. Perhaps you’ve heard the famous New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival, which takes place here in late October. Plan a weekend getaway to check out the amazing display of jack-o’-lanterns, live music, the Children’s Costume Parade, a cornhole tournament and more.
Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
Located around 75 miles southwest of the nation’s capital is Shenandoah National Park, a great place for leaf peeping(赏叶) and exploring the outdoors in autumn. This national park has more than 200, 000 acres of forest, waterfalls, flower fields and plenty of wildlife. For example, you can spot black bears, deer and birds throughout the national park.

My first job at KCRW was Ruth Seymour’s assistant. Soon after, I became Assistant General Manager and worked closely with her for 16 years. Therefore, I have had the opportunity to observe her and the enormous impact she had on KCRW and the other radio stations.
Ruth did nothing conventionally and nothing she created was a reaction to anything. She created KCRW not to gain the most listeners or to win any awards but to be an intellectual force for arts, culture and smart ideas. She wanted to start the conversation, not just contribute to it.
Ruth had the highest artistic standards, which is why KCRW aired radio dramas like the 10-hour Babbitt and 30-hour Ulysses. She created Jewish Short Stories From Eastern Europe and Beyond in two audio collections that featured famous actors reading the work of Jewish authors like Sholem Aleichem, Philip Roth and Isaac Bashevis Singer. KCRW sold more of those collections than anything else in our history.
Ruth went to a newsstand every day and read articles from New York Times, word for word, on the air at noon because ordinary people couldn’t easily get that paper then. She discovered people who matched her intellect at dinners or parties and gave them on-air shows on journalism, literature, film, art, theater, travel, dance or music.
She said it best, “I wanted to do the program as an act of love and respect.”
When she came to KCRW in 1977, she found herself building the station in a junior high classroom right off the playground. Now KCRW could be heard across Los Angeles. Most powerfully, the radio format (总体安排) she created continues to be used by radio stations — news of the day, debates of ideas, art, artists, food, literature and film.
Outspoken and fearless women leaders were rare in the 1960s and 1970s — in fact, women couldn’t get credit cards apart from their husbands until 1974 — which is why her achievements are so singular.
4. Why did Ruth broadcast Ulysses and Babbitt
A. The listeners loved them.
B. They were award-winning works.
C. The authors were her friends.
D. They were artistically important.
5. What does the sixth paragraph mainly focus on
A. Ruth’s widely-felt influence
B. Ruth’s hard working conditions.
C. Inspiration of Ruth’s programs.
D. The variety of Ruth’s radio formats.
6. What does the word “singular”, underlined in the last paragraph mean
A. Strange. B. Reproducible. C. Remarkable. D. Lasting.
7. How is the text mainly developed
A. By making comparisons. B. By listing examples.
C By following time order. D. By conducting surveys.
D 5. A 6. C 7. B
根据第三段中的“Ruth had the highest artistic standards, which is why KCRW aired radio dramas like the 10-hour Babbitt and 30-hour Ulysses.(Ruth的艺术水平最高,这就是为什么KCRW播放了10小时的《巴比特》和30小时的《尤利西斯》等广播剧。)”
根据第六段“When she came to KCRW in 1977, she found herself building the station in a junior high classroom right off the playground. Now KCRW could be heard across Los Angeles. Most powerfully, the radio format(总体安排) she created continues to be used by radio stations—news of the day, debates of ideas, art, artists, food, literature and film.(1977年,当她来到KCRW时,她发现自己正在操场旁的一间初中教室里建造电台。现在,整个洛杉矶都能听到KCRW的声音。最有力的是,她创造的广播格式继续被广播电台使用——当天的新闻、思想辩论、艺术、艺术家、美食、文学和电影。)”可知,本段提到她在一间初中教室建造的广播站最终在整个洛杉矶都得到了收听,并且她创造的节目安排形式被其他电台沿用,由此可知,本段主要讲述了她的广泛影响力。故选A。
通读全文,再根据文章第三段“She created Jewish Short Stories From Eastern Europe and Beyond in two audio collections that featured famous actors reading the work of Jewish authors like Sholem Aleichem, Philip Roth and Isaac Bashevis Singer. (她在两个音频集中创作了《来自东欧及其他地区的犹太短篇小说》,其中著名演员阅读了Sholem Aleichem、Philip Roth和Isaac Bashevis Singer等犹太作家的作品)”、第四段“Ruth went to a newsstand every day and read articles from New York Times (Ruth每天都去报摊,在中午逐字逐句地阅读《纽约时报》的文章)”和第六段“When she came to KCRW in 1977, she found herself building the station in a junior high classroom right off the playground. (1977年,当她来到KCRW时,她发现自己正在操场旁边的一间初中教室里建造电台)”可推知,本文主要是通过列举Ruth的各种成就和贡献来展开的。故选B。

While temperatures continue to climb, visitors are still coming to see Death Valley National Park on the California-Nevada border. The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 53.33℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles.
Early information from the park service shows that across the nation’s 424 national parks, at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley earlier this month.
Death Valley National Park suggests visitors be careful and not have expectations of rescue. While park rangers (护林员) drive on park roads and can aid tourists in need, it is unsure that lost visitors will get help in time.
Physical activity can make the heat feel even worse and leave people exhausted. Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland, said, “It’s very hot especially when there’s a gentle wind. You would think maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face.”
Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service’s website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley.
Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The 183-meter Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot.
Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. “It’s hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said.
8. What do most visitors do in Death Valley
A Cool themselves in time. B. Do lots of physical exercises.
C. Stay away from park rangers. D. Carry dryers with themselves.
9. Why does the author mention the 65-year-old man in paragraph 2
A. To encourage the elderly to travel more.
B. To express admiration for mountain climbers.
C. To advise people to tour Death Valley more often.
D. To show the danger of traveling in Death Valley.
10. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about Death Valley
A. Its covering area. B. Its attractive spots.
C. The reason why it is so hot. D. The service of its park’s website.
11. What can be inferred about Death Valley from the last two paragraphs
A. It has a short history. B. It is worth visiting.
C. It draws fewer and fewer tourists. D. It is unsuitable for viewing sunrise.
A 9. D 10. C 11. B
细节理解题,根据第一段“The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 53.33℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles. (这个公园被认为是地球上最热的地方。上周末,气温攀升至53.33℃。在每年的这个时候,大多数游客只会到公园的任何一个地方很短的距离,然后就会回到他们的车里享受凉爽的空气)”可知,游玩死亡谷国家公园时,大部分游客都会及时给自己降温。故选A。
根据第二段“Early information from the park service shows that across the nation’s 424 national parks, at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley earlier this month. (来自公园管理局的早期信息显示,在全国424个国家公园中,今年至少有4人死于与高温有关的原因。其中包括一名来自圣地亚哥的65岁男子,本月早些时候,他被发现死于死亡谷)”可推知,作者提及这位65岁的老人是为了说明在死亡谷国家公园游玩的危险之处,故选D。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service’s website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley. (公园管理局的网站上说,死亡谷是一个低于海平面的狭窄地区,周围环绕着高山。干燥的空气和小的植物覆盖让阳光加热了公园的表面。然后热量被困在山谷里)”可知,故本段主要讲的是死亡谷如此炽热的原因。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The 183-meter Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot. (尽管如此,死亡谷的几个地区仍然吸引着游客。由盐滩组成的巴德沃特盆地被认为是整个北美的最低点。183米高的乌贝赫比陨石坑可以追溯到2000多年前。扎布里斯基角是观赏日出的好地方)”以及最后一段“Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. “It’s hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said. (来自印第安纳波利斯的游客Josh Miller也有这种感觉,他到目前为止已经去过20个国家公园了。“天气很热,但风景很棒,”他说)”可推断,Death Valley是一个值得游玩的地方。故选B。
D
The same area where the Wright brothers developed the first airplane will soon see electric planes that take off and land vertically (垂直地). The planes, called “flying taxis” will be produced under an agreement between the state of Ohio and Joby Aviation at Dayton International Airport.
Joby Aviation is a 14-year-old company that went public in 2021 and became the first electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) firm to receive a special kind of permission from the US Air Force. Its production efforts are supported by partnerships with Toyota, Delta Air Lines, Intel and Uber.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine told The Associated Press, “When you’re talking about air taxis, that’s the future.”
Developers say the planes are nearing the day when they will provide a way to move individual people or small groups from the top of buildings and parking spaces to their destinations.
Around the world, eVTOL. aircrafts or flying taxis are becoming more common. Still, questions remain about noise levels and charging demands.
Engineers designed Joby’s production aircraft to transport a pilot and four passengers at the speed of up to 321.87 kilometers per hour. The aircraft can cover a distance of up to 160. 93 kilometers. It is a quiet machine that can barely be heard in most cities, the company said. The plan is to place them in aerial ride sharing networks beginning in 2025.
The $500 million project is supported by up to $325 million in payments from the state of Ohio. With the money, Joby plans to build an Ohio facility capable of delivering up to 500 aircrafts a year and creating 2,000 jobs. The US Department of Energy has invited Joby to apply for a loan to support the development of the facility as a clean energy project.
cBen Bevirt told the AP that the company chose Ohio after a large and competitive search. Ohio’s financial deal was not the largest, but the chance to bring the operation to the birthplace of aviation — with a workforce experienced in the field — led to the deal, he said.
12. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2
A. Summarize the previous paragraph. B. Provide some advice for the readers.
C. Add some background information. D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
13. What is Mike DeWine’s attitude toward air taxis
A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned. C. Unclear. D. Positive.
14. What is an advantage of Joby Aviation’s flying taxi
A. It hardly makes any noise. B. It doesn’t need to be charged.
C. It carries at most 6 passengers. D. It covers a distance of 321.87km.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The Life of the Wright Brothers B. Flying Taxis to be Made in Ohio
C. A Competitive Future for Aircrafts D. The Development of Joby Aviation
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

Music is my first love. I can sit down at my electronic keyboard and forget all about time and space, all about my problems. During the lowest moments in my life, music was my savior. Besides, I would like to thank two volunteer organizations — one is America’s Veterans Services and the other is The Paul Hazelton House for seniors and the disabled.
I was a veteran (老兵). After I got out of the service, I began a career in music, and then became an ironworker for higher pay. A few years ago, the one-bedroom house I rented in Massachusetts was sold. The developer planned to tear it down. The property manager gave me two months rent-free to find a new place to live. It didn’t help because I’d been disabled from an accident at work and was living on benefits. Nothing affordable turned up.
With the help of two friends, I silently and hopelessly packed up my belongings and moved everything — including my electronic keyboard — into storage. I slept in my car, thinking it wouldn’t last long. But weeks turned into months and the months into years. My car had become my home.
The one thing that kept me alive was music. I would lose myself in music. Although I had developed cataracts (白内障), nothing could keep my fingers from finding the right keys.
However, I hit my real low one Christmas Eve. I was driving down a narrow back road to where I would park my car and sleep at night. I turned right and accidentally ran into a wall. My car — my only home — lost its right front end.
At that point, I really had no place to live. Fortunately, Bruce Knight, a retired firefighter, heard about me. He drove me to a homeless shelter in York County where I stayed for 75 days. That’s where I met with case managers from Volunteers of America's Veterans Services. They helped me move into their housing, a place called Huot House. I was able to sign up for Veterans Administration benefits and get the cataract treatment I needed to recover my eyesight.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Ken Darby, manager of Huot House, told me to move toward life.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I went to volunteer for the “Day of Caring” held by The Paul Hazelton House.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Ken Darby, manager of Huot House, told me to move toward life. One of the first things I did when I got settled was get my electronic keyboard out of storage and set it up in the TV room at Huot House. I’d play for hours, totally lost in the music. After listening to the music I played, Ken told me about The Paul Hazelton House for seniors and the disabled, where a “Day of Caring” was held every year.
I went to volunteer for the “Day of Caring” held by The Paul Hazelton House. I played several songs for the seniors and disabled there. Music, the universal medium that had helped me, was also a joy to others. People gathered around my electronic keyboard, clapping and singing. As I played the music, I thought back to what I had experienced. I realized how blessed I’d been that people had stepped up and helped me when I couldn’t see how to help myself. They took me in, encouraged me to make music and put me back on the right path.

C. By following time order. D. By conducting surveys.

It is a quiet machine that can barely be heard in most cities, the company said. The plan is to place them in aerial ride sharing networks beginning in 2025.

With the money, Joby plans to build an Ohio facility capable of delivering up to 500 aircrafts a year and creating 2,000 jobs. The US Department of Energy has invited Joby to apply for a loan to support the development of the facility as a clean energy project.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Ken Darby, manager of Huot House, told me to move toward life.
