Can you imagine a cloud floating in the middle of your room Do you want to know what it feels like to fly like a bird Find your answers in Time Magazine's 25 "Best Inventions". Here, we have picked out the most interesting 4 to share with you.
Talking Gloves
Ever felt confused by the sign language used by disabled people Here is the "helping hand" you need. Four Ukrainian students have created a pair of gloves that helps people with hearing and speech problems communicate with others. The gloves are equipped with sensors that recognize sign language and translate it into text on a smartphone. Then the smartphone changes the text to spoken words.
Google Glasses
Google Glasses are like a computer built into the frame of a pair of glasses. With its 1.3-centimeter display, the glasses allow you to surf the Internet and make calls without even lifting a finger. The glasses also have a camera and GPS mapping system. Users can take and share photos, check maps and surf the Internet just by looking up, down, left and right.
Indoor Clouds
It's not virtual. That's a real world. Dutch artist Smilde managed to create a small but perfect white cloud in the middle of a room using a fog machine. But it required careful planning—the temperature, humidity(湿度)and lighting all had to be just right. Once everything was ready, the cloud formed in the air with the machine. But it only lasted for a short while.
Wingsuits
The suit fulfills your dreams of flying like a bird.Well, not exactly flying, but gliding(滑翔)through the air. It increases the surface area of the human body, which makes it easier for people to float in the air. Fliers wearing wingsuits can glide one kilometer in about 30 seconds.
1. Who will probably be the users of “Talking Gloves”
A. Disabled people B. Normal people.
C. Trained people. D. Working people.
2. How can users of Google Glasses surf the Internet
A. By moving the mouse. B. By tapping the keyboard.
C. By moving the eyeballs. D. By pressing the button.
3. Which of the following can help you fly
A. Talking Gloves. B. Wingsuits.
C. Google Glasses. D. Indoor Clouds.
根据第二段中的“Ever felt confused by the sign language used by disabled people Here is the "helping hand"you need.”
根据第三段中的“Users can take and share photos, check maps and surf the Internet just by looking up, down, left and right.”
根据最后一段中的“The suit fulfills your dreams of flying like a bird.”
【点睛】本篇第1题难度较大,A项的迷惑性很大,很多同学会根据第二段中的“Four Ukrainian students have created a pair of gloves that helps people with hearing and speech problems communicate with others.”(四名乌克兰学生发明了一种手套,可以帮助有听力和语言问题的人与他人交流)而误选A项,但根据第二段中的“Ever felt confused by the sign language used by disabled people Here is the "helping hand"you need.”
B
When most high school students complain about having to wake up extra early, they're usually referring to a swim practice before class or the last minute study before a test. But that was never the case for Corey Patrick, who woke up at 4:30 every morning last year in order to arrive on time at Tarrant High School in Alabama.
Patrick had attended Tarrant City Schools since his fourth grade, but things got difficult when his family moved to a town 14 miles away. Even though his family didn't have any forms of transportation,Patrick didn't want to miss out on his senior year with friends,so he woke up at 4:30 every morning in order to make it to a 5:41 a.m.bus that would help him get to Tarrant on time. And just as he had done every other school day of the year,Patrick got up one morning to start the journey from his home to his high school; the only obvious difference that morning was that he was wearing his graduation gown (毕业礼服),which made that day's bus driver,DeJuanna Beasley, take some photos of him. She then shared them online with these words,“You tell me this isn't determination. He got on my bus to go to his graduation, and no one was with him.Sometimes it's all in what you want out of life.I was so proud of this young man.”
That was soon shared by many people online, and it caught the attention of radio host Rickey Smiley, who surprised Patrick by giving him a car later. Smiley confirmed that he would make sure that Patrick received help with getting his driver's license. A GoFundMe was also created for Patrick, which has raised over $20,000. And Patrick has got a scholarship (奖学金) to Jacksonville University, where he plans to study computer science.
4. Why was Patrick different from most students when it comes to rising early
A. It had something to do with study.
B. It was a part of daily life for him.
C. He was unwilling to get up early.
D. He spent more time in studying.
5. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. Patrick dressed poorly on his graduation day.
B. It took Patrick an hour to get to the bus stop.
C. The driver was moved by Patrick's story.
D. There was no school in Patrick's town.
6. What does the underlined word “That” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Patrick's request for help on the Internet.
B. The difficulties that Patrick experienced.
C. The information about Patrick's university.
D. The message published online by the driver.
7. Who gave Patrick practical support rather than money
A. GoFundMe. B. Rickey Smiley.
C. Patrick's high school. D. Jacksonville University.
B 5. C 6. D 7. B
根据第一段“…they're usually referring to a swim practice before class or the last minute study before a test.”(…… 根据第一段结尾“But that was never the case for Corey Patrick, who woke up at 4:30 every morning last year in order to…”(但Corey Patrick 却不是这样,他去年每天早上4:30起床……)
通过她配的文字“…I was so proud of this young man.”(……
根据第二段结尾“She then shared them online with these words…”(然后她在网上分享了照片和这些话……) “That was soon shared by many people online…”(这很快就被很多网友分享了……) The message published online by the driver.
根据最后一段开始“…it caught the attention of radio host Rickey Smiley, who surprised Patrick by giving him a car later. Smiley confirmed that he would make sure that Patrick received help with getting his driver's license.” 根据最后一段结尾“A GoFundMe was also created for Patrick, which has raised over $20,000. And Patrick has got a scholarship to Jacksonville University, where he plans to study computer science.”
如本题中第1小题,原文中提到其他学生usually referring to a swim practice before class or the last minute study before a test和后文转折提到的Corey Patricke, who woke up at 4:30 every morning等词语的对照,以事实和线索为依据,很容易就判断到答案It was a part of daily life for him.
C
Exercise is good for us. It reduces the risks of dying from all causes, including cancer and heart disease. But many people who work all week have little time for exercise. So, they might try to do something to increase their heart rates over the weekend—go for a long run, take a bike ride or hike in the mountains. But is it healthy to avoid exercise during the work week and then try to fit it all in during the weekend
A new study suggests that, yes, it is healthy. Australian researchers at the University of Sydney did the study. It took place over a nine year period. During that time, the researchers looked at the self reported exercise habits and health examinations of more than 63,000 adults in England and Scotland. Then they connected that information to death records.
The researchers found that people who exercised only one or two days a week improved their chances of living longer than people who did not exercise at all. Even those who are fat could extend their lives by exercising a couple of days per week.
Emmanuel Stamatakis is the senior author of the study. He says that he found it very encouraging that even people who exercised as little as one or two times a week appear to lower their risk of early death. In other words, their health improves even if they don’t meet the suggested weekly amount of physical activity. However, to be in the best health, Stamatakis says more exercise is better.
The WHO suggests that adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense activity per week. For the best results, the organisation suggests 75 minutes per week of intense physical activity. However, if you are busy with work and family duties, exercise as much as you can.
8. In which part of a website can we find this text
A. Science. B. News.
C. Sports. D. Health.
9. What can we learn about the study
A. It was carried out in three places.
B. It lasted for more than nine years.
C. It studied both children and adults.
D. It was led by Emmanuel Stamatakis.
10. What does the study find
A. A little exercise is better than none.
B. We’d better do exercise on weekdays.
C. Fat people usually live shorter than thin people.
D. Exercise habits have a big influence on death.
11. What does Emmanuel Stamatakis suggest doing
A. Paying attention to the risk of early death.
B. Trying to do more exercise if we have time.
C. Getting at least 150 minutes of activity a week.
D. Avoiding doing much intense physical activity.
D 9. B 10. A 11. B
根据第一段中“But is it healthy to avoid exercise during the workweek and then try to fit it all in during the weekend ( 但是,在工作日避免锻炼,然后试图把所有的锻炼都安排在周末,这样健康吗?)”以及第二段中“A new study suggests that, yes, it is healthy. (一项新的研究表明,是的,它是健康的。)”可知,文章主要介绍的是一项新研究发现即在工作日避免锻炼,然后试图把所有的锻炼都安排在周末,这样是健康的。故推断文章出自于网页的“健康”部分。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“It took place over a nine-year period. (整个过程持续了超过九年的时间。)”可知,该项研究持续的时间多于9年。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The researchers found that people who exercised only one or two days a week improved their chances of living longer than people who did not exercise at all.(研究人员发现,每周只锻炼一到两天的人比完全不锻炼的人更有可能长寿。)” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段中“However, to be in the best health, Stamatakis says more exercise is better.( 然而,Stamatakis说,为了保持最佳健康状态,更多的运动更好。)”
D
When Lenore Skenazy let her 9-year-old son take the New York subway home by himself 10 years ago, you would have thought that she’d carried out a crime. Now Skenazy started the movement Free Range (放养的) Kids to bring up safe and independent children. Just this month, Utah became a free range state, changing its law to protect parents from being charged with neglect (疏忽)for letting their kids walk alone, or wait in a car for an adult.
Skenazy argues that the risks of giving children some freedom are exaggerated (夸大). Skenazy’s mother used to send her outside at 5 to walk to school. That was just normal back then. And suddenly we hear stories about parents getting punished for letting their 10-year-old son play outside.
We get so used to not knowing our neighbors, not letting our kids walk to school, or play outside, that nowadays, the kids are either in a car or in the backyard, and they don’t get to know the neighborhood. In fact, the world has become safer. We have the technologies to keep track of almost everything our kids do. And so you think you must control them, and you think your child is something that has to be tracked like a package.
The famous case for many parents was the Etan Patz case in New York in 1979. Patz’s parents gave him permission for the first time to walk to the bus stop nearby. He was killed. The story is so terrible that we remember it two generations later. And we don’t allow our kids to walk alone because of one terrible thing that happened 39 years ago. But we don’t say, “I want to drive you to the dentist, but what if we get in a car accident Think of those people who died in a car accident 39 years ago. I don’t want to be like them. No, we’re not going.” And we recognize that it would be funny to think that way.
12. What do we know about Lenore Skenazy
A. She used to have full control of her son.
B. She was in favor of Utah’s previous law.
C. She suggests kids be allowed more freedom.
D. She was once punished for neglecting her son.
13. Which of the following is a reason why kids are kept at home nowadays
A. People remain distant.
B. Kids dislike outdoor activities.
C. Parents know little about accidents.
D. The crime rate is slightly increasing.
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards parents’ act of keeping track of their kids
A. Unclear B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Unfavorable.
15. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph
A. To prove accidents are like crimes.
B. To warn parents of a terrible crime.
C. To argue against some parents’ worry.
D. To point out the real danger to children.
C 13. A 14. D 15. C
根据第一段中“Now Skenazy started the movement Free Range (放养的) Kids to bring up safe and independent children.(现在,Skenazy发起了“放养孩子”运动,以培养安全独立的孩子。)”以及第二段中“Skenazy argues that the risks of giving children some freedom are exaggerated(Skenazy认为,给孩子一些自由的风险被夸大了)”可知,Skenazy建议给孩子们更多的自由。
根据第三段中“We get so used to not knowing our neighbors, not letting our kids walk to school, or play outside, that nowadays, the kids are either in a car or in the backyard, and they don’t get to know the neighborhood. (我们已经习惯了不认识我们的邻居,不让我们的孩子走路上学,或者在外面玩,现在,孩子们要么在车里,要么在后院,他们不认识邻居。)”可知,当今孩子常常被留在家中的一个原因是人与人之间关系的疏远。故选A。
根据第三段中“We have the technologies to keep track of almost everything our kids do. And so you think you must control them, and you think your child is something that has to be tracked like a package.(我们有技术可以记录孩子们做的几乎每件事。所以你觉得你必须控制他们,你觉得你的孩子就像包裹一样需要被跟踪。)”可知,现代科技让家长追踪孩子的一切行为,这让家长产生了依赖。因此作者认为他们应该掌握孩子的一切,就像追踪包裹一样追踪自己的孩子,这种比喻说明作者是不认同家长的这种行为的。D选项“Unfavorable.(令人不快的)”符合题意。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“The famous case for many parents was the Etan Patz case in New York in 1979. No, we’re not going.”

A. Patrick dressed poorly on his graduation day.
B. It took Patrick an hour to get to the bus stop.

A. People remain distant.
B. Kids dislike outdoor activities.
C. Parents know little about accidents.

A. Unclear B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Unfavorable.
15. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph

B To warn parents of a terrible crime.
