Chinese New Year Painting, or nianhua in Chinese, is a kind of traditional paintings to be put up on walls and windows during the Spring Festival. Its bright colors and different subjects show the Chinese great expectation for happiness and wealth.
Chinese New Year Painting is an old handicraft. Its original (最初的) form was a picture of a door god during the Tang Dynasty. Later, more subjects such as the Kitchen God, women and babies were included. As the Chinese New Year arrives, every family puts up its New Year paintings in order to say goodbye to the past and welcome the future. One of the most famous woodblock (木刻) New Year paintings comes from Yangjiabu of Shandong Province. It covers all kinds of themes and forms. They reflect (反映) people’s everyday life.
As time went by, people found New Year paintings old-fashioned. Besides, they considered the door god too scary to hang in their homes. They wanted something more artistic. So in the middle of the 1980s, the sales of New Year paintings dropped greatly.
Usually, colorful woodblock New Year paintings are produced in four steps. Firstly, artists draw a simple sketch (素描) on the paper. Secondly, they make the simple sketch on the wood board and print a few samples (样品). Thirdly, they add color to the sample. There was something wrong with grandma Mommika’s fingers. The doctor said that she had arthritis (关节炎): He said Mommika should keep her hands warm. I made her cups of tea to hold and moved her chair closer to the fire. But her fingers were stiff (僵硬的).
I wasn’t used to seeing Mommika’s hands like this. Her quiet hands made herself quieter too.
This year there were no knitted (编织的) hats for Christmas, no colorful socks or soft sweaters.
One day, Mom asked me to throw away some sweaters which had big holes. Mommika was looking down at her hands, and was shocked as I walked by.
“Wait, Annuska,” she said. “Let me see those.”
She picked up a blue sweater on top. She began pulling gently at a piece of yarn (纱线) near the neck.
“What are you doing ” I asked.
“Unknitting, make it into a ball like this. Then you can use the yarn to knit something new.” Mommika said.
Mommika wrapped yarn around and around her stiff fingers, first in one direction and then the other to keep the ball round.
Mommika happily told me how Peti, her youngest brother, used to play with their mother’s yarn balls. I picked up three yarn balls and tried to do like Peti. Mommika watched me and then smiled.
After dinner, I got an idea. I decided to do something for Mommika. I picked up a pair of old gloves and sewed up the holes as she had taught me before. Then I sewed the faces of Mommika and her brothers and sisters on the tips of the fingers.
“Your family,” I said, handing the gloves to her.
“Oh, Annuska! This one must be me,” she said, laughing. “And this must be Peti.” Mommika put the gloves on and told me about her life with her brothers and sisters happily until my bedtime.

Perhaps you often listen to music while exercising. Even if you haven’t, you’re certain to see people running along with earphones in their ears.
Brunel University’s School of Sport and Education has found that, if you listen to music while exercising, it can have a positive effect on you—music can help exercisers feel more confident even when they are very tired.
The findings also show that the right music can in fact increase a person’s physical endurance (忍耐力) and make your experience of heart exercise more useful. Another study, published in the U.S. Periodical Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology shows when music is carefully chosen, it can enhance endurance by 15% and improve the ‘feeling states’ of exercisers, helping them to develop much greater pleasure from the task.
Of course music is good for some sports where people decide when to act and how to act themselves, like rowing boats or running, while doing sports like judo (柔道) or football, you’d better not listen to music.
Anyway, scientists have shown it is true that music can be good for health. According to Dr. Costas Karageorghis’s latest research, music has the power to fight against public inactivity. Moreover, the effects of music on mood and feelings open up the possibility that it can be used to make people go well with music while exercising and therefore help people achieve their long-term health and fitness goals.
If you use earphones, make sure you can do so safely. For example, cyclists shouldn’t use earphones on the road with traffic.
Also, be careful how loud you play your music when exercising. The United Nations has standards of safe listening—it’s not safe to listen to sounds, that are louder than 85 db (分贝). As a result, listening too loud, especially with earphones, can lead to hearing loss. Remember to listen for no more than an hour a day at a safe level to stay safe.
42. The underlined word “enhance” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A. explain B. provide C. improve D. produce
43. Which sentence should go in the empty box
A. Wearing earphones makes the exercisers look cool.
B. Should you listen to music while exercising
C. Without music people can’t do exercise well.
D. Can listening to music make exercise more interesting
44. Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage
A. We can listen to music when we do any kind of exercise.
B. The louder the music is, the better it is for exercisers.
C. If you aren’t active in doing exercise, music may help you.
D. All the people like wearing earphones while running.
45. What’s the main idea of the last two paragraphs
A Advice on listening to music while exercising.
B. Ways of using earphones while exercising.

One day, Reuben, one of the stablemen, drove the coach home from another house. He was very drunk. He could not hold the reins.
