Most Famous Libraries in the World
Trinity College Library
Designed by Thomas Burgh, the library is the largest in Ireland. Construction on the Long Room, the library’s 65-meter-long main hall, began in 1712 and lasted 20 years. The original structure only had books on the lower level, but when the library’s shelves were filled in the 1850s, the ceiling was raised to accommodate even more books. Today the Long Room holds 200,000 of the library’s oldest books.
Stuttgart City Library

Library of Parliament
Taking the form of a Victorian Gothic chapter house complete with 16 flying buttresses, the 1876 Library of Parliament is one of Canada’s prized architectural treasures — it’s on the ten-dollar bill. Rampur Raza Library
Founded in the late 18th century, the Indian library is home to a massive collection of Islamic and Asian texts and objects. The pink structure that houses the collection today was built in 1904 by Nawab Hamid Ali Khan as a mansion of Indo-European style, The Rampur Raza Library was later shifted to this grand building in 1957.

Laurie Horam never thought of himself as musical. At home, his dad never listened to music, while one of his boarding school teachers labelled him tone deaf. But last month he started to play the harmonica (口琴)on the streets of Bradford. People clapped, danced and threw coins into his case for the local food bank. Horam caught himself thinking. “How, at the age of 79, do I come to be playing music to people on the streets ”
The question preoccupied him, because, some years ago at a family gathering, Gavin, his eldest son, said: “You know what, Dad It can’t be coincidental. We must have got our musical abilities from you.” Horam has three sons and they cover a range of instruments. He was surprised. “There can’t be music in me, because I can’t play! ”he said.
Eight years ago, Horam, a retired civil servant, was on his way back from a trip with his family. Gavin stopped at a music shop. He walked out and said: “Here you are. I bought this for you, Dad. It’s a harmonica. I’ll try to show you how to play a bit.”
They went to a session at their local pub. Gavin played the guitar and Horam sat in the corner with his harmonica, trying to make a sound that no one would hear. After six months, he was invited into the group. He discovered a talent for improvisation(即兴表演),responding to a note within a millisecond without batting an eyelid. “I don’t play by ear. I play by heart.” Actually, Horam says: “My harmonica plays me-how I feel, what I am, what I’ve been.”
Music has enriched life with friendship and made Horam feel “part of something much bigger” than himself. “At a time when the circle of life might be shrinking, mine is expanding,” he says. “Maybe we never know completely who we are or what we can do.”
24. Why did Horam play the harmonica on the streets of Bradford
A. To recall the good old days.
B. To beg food from passers-by.
C. To live his childhood dream.
D. To collect money for charity.
25 What is Gavin’s attitude to his father’s musical ability
A. Positive.
B. Disapproving.
C. Doubtful.
D. Unclear.
26. What does playing the harmonica allow Horam to do
A. Enjoy the quiet.
B. Listen to his heart.
C. Express himself.
D. Sharpen his hearing.
27. What does music bring to Horam
A. A lost soul.
B. A comfortable life.
C. A broader circle of life.
D. A new perception of family.

Now researchers have found that humans produce a different odor (气味) when under pressure — and dogs can sniff it out. While previous studies have suggested dogs might notice human emotions, possibly through smell, questions remained over whether they could detect stress and if this could be done through smell.
Wilson, head of one research team, pointed the findings could prove useful when training service dogs, such as those that support people with PTSD (创伤后应激障碍). “They’re often trained to look at someone either crouching down on the floor, crying out in fear, or starting to do self-injurious behaviors,” said Wilson. The latest study, she said, offers another potential clue.
Wilson and colleagues trained four dogs to identify the container holding a particular breath and sweat sample, even when the containers included unused gauze (纱布), samples from another person, or samples from the same person taken at a different time of day. After the team is confident that the dogs understood the approach, they turned to collect breath and sweat samples collected from 36 people asked to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17, and the participants reported feeling stressed.
Later, the dogs were taught to pick out samples taken just after the task. The researchers then tested whether the dogs could do the same with samples taken from the same participant just before the task, when they were more relaxed. Each set of samples was shown to a single dog in 20 trials.
The results reveal that the dogs chose the “stressed” sample in 675 out of the 720 trials. It was pretty amazing to see how smoothly the dogs act in telling people these two samples definitely different.
28. Why did Wilson and colleagues do such an experiment
A. To train service dogs for people with PTSD. B. To confirm dogs can smell out stressed people.
C. To prove dogs could recognize human emotions. D. To help people understand how stressed they are.
29. The service dogs will usually provide help when someone ________.
A. hurts himself B. lies on the bed C. produces an odor D. screams in excitement
30. Which order does the experiment follow
a. To train dogs to pick out the particular container.
b. To show each set of samples to a single dog in 20 trials.
c. To collect samples from participants when they are stressed out.
d. To ask participants to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17.
A. a-d-c-b B. a-c-d-b C. c-a-d-b D. c-a-b-d
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards the finding
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Uncertain. D. Neutral.
D
Most of us have heard of the 3Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. It is the core principle of a sustainable (可持续的) life, but few of us can apply it in our own lives. Now, there’s a “lab” you can explore and discover a way toward living sustainably.
3R Lab is located in Xuhui district, Shanghai. It offers exhibitions, activities and goods that showcase the 3R principle. The key to a sustainable life, according to Vincent T. M. Fong, the 32-year-old from Hong Kong who created the lab, is to make it a long-term promise. “A sustainable life should be sustainable itself in the first place. You can’t lead a sustainable life on a whim. Small and comfortable changes are exactly what you need,” Fong said.
The lab regularly hosts ugly fruit markets, offering these strange fruits which are often thrown away by traditional markets and consumers at a quite attractive price. “They’re thrown away simply because of their appearance. Buying fruit regardless of how they look reduces food waste significantly in our daily life,” Fong commented.
A water tank with two types of straws is another equipment in the lab. “One type is made from normal plastics widely used in our daily life while the other is from PHA, a new replacement for plastics, and the water is sourced from the Suzhou River,” explained Ni Li, an employee of the lab. Visitors can see how the PHA straws degrade (降解) into a thin layer in just one month, while the others remain unchanged.
“Leading a sustainable life does not necessarily mean sacrifice,” said Fong. Consuming ugly fruit and using degradable plastics are small changes that are good for the environment and easy to stick to. Only in this way can the 3R principle become part of our lives, he added.
After working there for six months, Ni, who wasn’t mindful of the 3R principle before arriving at the lab, now uses her cup every time she buys a coffee. “The job has reshaped my life,” Ni said.
32. What does the-underlined phrase “on a whim” in the second paragraph probably mean
A. In a rush. B. On a regular basis.
C. Without any reason. D. As a common practice.
33. What is the purpose of the ugly fruit market at 3R Lab
A. To reduce food waste. B. To promote healthy eating.
C. To sell new kinds of fruit. D. To provide more affordable fruit,
34. What can the water tank at 3R Lab show to its visitors
A. The water pollution caused by plastics. B. The degradation of PHA straws.
C. The interaction between two types of straws. D. The disappearance of normal plastic straws.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph about Ni
A. She avoids going to traditional markets. B. She has devoted less time to her hobbies.
C. She has got rid of a few bad habits. D. She is leading a low carbon life now.

【答案】32. A 33. A 34. B 35. D

【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“After working there for six months, Ni, who wasn’t mindful of the 3R principle before arriving at the lab, now uses her cup every time she buys a coffee.(在那里工作了六个月后,倪在来实验室之前并不知道3R原理,现在她每次买咖啡都要用自己的杯子。)”可推知,倪现在过着低碳生活。故选D项。
