Have you ever seen a bee fly busily Do you think the bee is just flying around Actually, the bee is hard at work.
Bees spend a lot of time looking for food. But not all the bees in the hive(蜂巢) have this work. Bees can be divided into three kinds—a queen bee, drones(雄蜂), and worker bees. The queen bee is very important. She is the mother of all the bees that live in the hive. Worker bees do all the other work in the hive. Besides looking for food, they make and clean the hive. They also take care of the queen and protect her.
Bees make dance-like movements inside the hive to send messages about food. They use different movements to give different kinds of information. They tell where food can be found and how far away it is from the hive. Bees can even share how much food there is and how good it is.
And surprisingly, new research has found that a group of bees could generate an amazing amount of electricity by beating their wings more than 200 times per second. And the amount of electricity could reach 100 to 1,000 V (伏). That’s eight times greater than the electricity a storm cloud can produce.
Scientists found that the denser(密集的) the cloud of bees is, the bigger the electrical field is. Based on these findings, the team recorded that bees—which group in huge, dense clouds—could have an influence similar to that of a storm. Further research is needed to find out how electricity influences the bees and their environment.

Recently, I went out to a bar with my friend Nicole. I didn’t actually know her well as we had only met once at a meeting. When I found myself in her town, we decided to meet up. Since we knew little about each other, we shared our stories, and she asked me many questions about my travels.
When answering her questions about what I had learned in my travels, I told Nicole that travel had greatly improved my ability to “read” people and situations.
“Oh OK. Read my friends over there,” she challenged me.
So I offered her my opinions about her friends and the other people in the bar.
“How did I do ” I asked when I had finished.
“Wow!” She was shocked.
You might want to know how I was able to get those people right. For sure, I knew nothing about mind games. I judged (判断) their personalities simply by reading their body language, facial expressions, dress, and the way they talked with one another.
I had travelled a lot before. When I was travelling, I couldn’t always understand what people were trying to say to me as most of them didn’t speak English. Non-verbal communication became very important. Whenever words failed, I depended on people’s facial expressions. By watching how people behaved, I tried to work out how they felt about something. The tone (音调) in people’s voices was quite helpful, too.
The more I travelled and talked with different people, the better I became at “reading” people. If you travel widely, you will be able to develop this ability, too.
( )8. What was the relationship between Nicole and the writer before their recent meeting
A. They were close friends.
B. They didn’t know each other well.
C. They used to work in the same office.
D. They often went to the bar together.
( )9. How did Nicole feel after the writer had read her friends in the bar
A. Thankful. B. Nervous. C. Surprised. D. Uncomfortable.
( )10. According to the article, how does the writer “read” people
A. By playing a clever trick on them.
B. By surveying some of their friends.
C. By having a short conversation with them.
D. By studying their clothes, expressions and so on.
( )11. What does the underlined word “Non-verbal” mean
A. Taking place online. B. Not using words.
C. Not writing English. D. Talking with strangers.
D[2023 连云港改编]
Many of us have seen rainbows in the sky once the sun starts shining again after it rains. For us to see a rainbow, the conditions need to be just right. We need some water drops in the air, like rain or even fog, and we need the sun to be behind us and quite low to the ground. This is because a rainbow is created by light passing through water drops.
The light that comes from the sun seems white to us. But the white light we see is made up of a mix of different colors. When the light goes through a raindrop, these colors can separate out.
Each of the colors in the rainbow has a different “wavelength”(波长). Raindrops look like little balls. When light hits one of these little balls of water, the light can change direction. We call this “refraction”(折射). Each of the different wavelengths is refracted differently. If the light hits the raindrop at the right place, the refraction separates the wavelengths out into their different colors.
We are taught there are seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. But this isn’t exactly true. Blue and green are next to each other in the rainbow, which is why we can see turquoise (a mix of blue and green). Brown is a mix of red and green. But they aren’t next to each other in the rainbow, so we don’t see them mix to make brown.
We would never see black or white in a rainbow. Black is what we see when there’s no light at all. On the other hand, white is a mix of all the colors together. When light is refracted by raindrops, it separates the white light out, meaning it is no longer white.
( )12. We can see a rainbow under the right conditions because _______.
A. the raindrops are like little balls
B. the light goes through raindrops
C. the sunshine seems to be colorful
D. the weather is foggy after it rains
( )13. According to the passage, what can we know about the colors in the rainbow
A. They can become brown or black.
B. There are only seven colors in all.
C. They mix to make the white light.
D. Their own places can be changed.
( )14. Which part of a magazine may this passage be taken from
A. Science. B. Health. C. Culture. D. Fashion.
( )15. What’s the best title for the passage
A. What is refraction
B. When can the colors turn blue in the rainbow
C. Which colors aren’t covered with light in the rainbow
D. Why can’t we find white, black and brown in the rainbow

Dear schoolmates,
Recently, it’s said that the use of textbooks is becoming a waste of resources. Our school has done some research on recycling textbooks.
38% of the students think textbooks should not be recycled, because they think some students want to take notes by themselves. Also, they are worried about public health. However, 62% of the students think textbooks should be recycled because recycling textbooks is a good way to save the forest. For another reason, it’s good for us to learn some good notes from the recycled textbooks.
In my opinion, it is necessary to recycle textbooks. Recycling textbooks can not only save resources but also help us take up a good hobby to save money.
As a saying goes, “All these small things can add up and become big things that can improve the environment.” Let’s take action to recycle textbooks together!
