There can be no doubt that Stephen King, New York Time’s Best-Selling author, has found success in many aspects, but it wasn’t always like this. King witnessed tragedy and horrors from the very beginning. When he was 2 years old, his father told his mom that he was going out to get cigarettes but in fact, he never came back, he had abandoned his family.
This left his mother Ruth to care for Stephen and his elder brother David on her own. Ruth was forced to move often, desperately looking for work as she was now the only provider of the family, and she had to rely on relatives most of the time. One day Stephen went out to play with friends and when he came back, he wasn’t even able to speak a single word, it seemed he was hurt mentally or something, but he still got the courage to continue forward. It turned out that one of his friends was hit by a train and died, which left an emotional scar on him.
King, later on, dropped out of school due to some serious health concerns and was told that he had to enlist (入伍) again the next fall, which demotivated him too. Although Stephen King didn’t see his childhood as something extraordinary or special, he did say that he was always fascinated by scary things.
People used to acknowledge the King family by their love of literature, in fact whenever Stephen’s mom used to go out, she didn’t hire a babysitter, for the kids used to read novels to each other so they would not get bored. Stephen King’s love of stories was developed from a very young age and he carried that tradition with his own children along with his wife Tabitha.
In 1973, Stephen King started his amazing journey of success when he published his first novel “Carrie”, which is scary. The rest followed from after that as he published many amazing books like The Shining, IT, Firestarter, and Cujo. All of these books became instant classics and got their own movie and television shows
adaptions.

A.Discouraged. B.Refreshed.
C.Embarrassed. D.Aroused.

A.The family was too poor to hire a babysitter.
B.The children were too naughty to be looked after.
C.The children could actually entertain themselves.

A soundly sleeping brain monitors its surroundings. It also can respond to them without waking, a new study finds. For instance, even in a short sleep during the daytime, a person’s brain can sort words correctly into different categories. This is not the first study to show that the sleeping mind can do useful work. Two years ago, researchers in Israel showed the sleeping brain can learn.
Sid Kouider of the National Center for Scientific Research NCSR) in Paris, led the new study. His team recorded brain signals from people -all wide awake -as they classified spoken words as either animals or objects. To do that, the participants would push a button with their right hand when they heard an animal name. Then they’d use their left hand to push a different button when the word represented some other type of object.
As each volunteer responded, the researchers tracked their brain activity. They did this by measuring the participants’ brain waves. Such recordings are known as EEGs, a record of electrical activity in the brain. And those EEGs showed that when an individual was about to hit the right button, the brain responded differently than when it was going to hit the left button.
Then each participant nodded off. The researchers again made EEGs recording brain activity. As this
happened, the researchers played recordings of a different set of words. These showed that the volunteers’ brains continued sorting the words into their proper categories. When a sleeper heard ”horse, “the EEGs looked as if that person was preparing to hit a button with her or his right hand, not the left. Kouider’s team reported its findings in Current Biology.
The new data demonstrate one way in which the brain monitors the outside world during sleep. Those results also may help explain why meaningful sounds, such as a baby crying, a spoken name or a siren (警报) warning, may more easily wake someone than other sounds do.
28.What does the new study find about a sleeping brain
A.It can help people to learn.
B.It can send signals to people.
C.It can respond to the surroundings.
D.It can record sounds autonomously.
29.What were the participants asked to do in the study
A.Track their brain activities in person.
B.Take part in the whole test while sleeping.
C.Repeat the words following the researchers.
D.Identify different words by pushing two buttons.
30.Which is less likely to awake people
A.Electric current sounds. B.People’s names.
C.Babies’ crying sounds. D.Alerting signals.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Brains React to Word Types

Slowly, a great white shark swims toward the boat and onto a specialized lift. Once the shark is lifted onto the boat, the research team from OCEARCH, a nonprofit that specializes in shark tracking, performs about a dozen procedures.
The work is part of OCEARCH’s efforts to study great whites in the western North Atlantic, a less well-researched population than others around the world. “Here we are at the location of Jaws, and yet we didn’t
really know the animals as well as we should,” says Bob Hueter, the chief scientist.
Two young great whites tagged (打标签) in this way, Simon and Jekyll, recently became famous thanks to a social media post that pointed out the pair had been traveling together for 4,000 miles up the North American Atlantic coast. People began to wonder if the sharks might be friends, but the situation is not so simple.
The two males were first tagged off the coast of Georgia in December 2022.The electronic tags transmit (传送) data via satellite when one of the sharks surfaces, allowing researchers to follow the animals’ movements online in real time. When Simon and Jekyll reached Long Island, researchers noticed their tracks were remarkably similar. Then they arrived in Novia Scotia within practically the same day!
Although this was a one-time event, such a similar route for the two sharks over a longtime and distance is significant. Great whites are traditionally viewed as solitary (独行者), but researchers believe they may display some social behaviors like other shark species. One study found that white sharks may remain close while hunting to benefit from food. “Surprisingly, we see more and more that white sharks might fit into that social category,” says Yannis Papastamatiou, a biologist at Florida International University.
However, Salvador Jorgensen, a marine ecologist at California State University, thinks there may be other reasons why the pair followed the same route.
32.What is the purpose of OCEARCH’s efforts
A.To further study great whites. B.To attract wildlife lovers.
C.To control the number of sharks. D.To protect natural habitats.
33.Why are Simon and Jekyll tagged
A.To distinguish them from other species. B.To track their travel routes.
C.To enable them to swim long distances. D.To guarantee their safety.
34.Which statement will Yannis probably agree with
A.The average size of the species has declined.
B.Many animals like to live in warmer weather.
C.The sharks reached Novia Scotia as expected.
D.White sharks tend to be social animals at times.
35.What might the author continue talking about
A.The patience the pair showed. B.The hardship the sharks underwent.
C.Other factors guiding the pair’s behavior. D.Coastal waters appealing to white sharks.

Michael saw the trouble coming. There standing in the hallway was Frank, the boy who enjoyed making fun of anyone at any given moment. Frank was tall and strong, so few of his victims stood up to him. Michael hated the idea that Frank always got away with his wrongdoing. Yet like most kids who were picked on, he just took it quietly and waited for the unpleasant to pass.
Frank walked up, his eyes locked on the books in Michael’s arms. When they met, Frank stopped unexpectedly, “Hey, let me see those books!” Some students watched as Michael held out the books he was carrying, trying not to give away his nervousness.
Frank took a book, looked inside for a second, and then threw the book at Michael, who dropped all the other books. “Hey, those are school property,” Frank barked, “Be careful!” Then he walked away, laughing loudly.
Michael, his cheeks turning red, half kicked the fallen books. Suddenly a hand picked up one book. “You look like you could use a p ally (盟友),” a friendly voice said. It was Ramon, the most athletic boy in the high school. Michael couldn’t believe Ramon was stopping to help him as they barely spoke.
“Thanks,” Michael sighed with relief. “It’s confusing. I don’t know what his problems is.”
“Well, as I see it,” Ramon said, “you need to find a way to end this.” Michael nodded, stuck for what to say. Ramon continued, “You know my grandmother used to tell me whenever I had a problem with someone. She’d say, ‘You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar (醋).’”
Looking puzzled, Michael asked, “What does that mean ”
“It means kindness may be more effective than anger,” Ramon explained.
“Can you just tell Frank to stop picking on me ” Michael suggested.
“That’s vinegar,” Ramon laughed as he walked away. “Try honey instead.”
Ramon’s words left Michael thinking.
The next school day brought Michael’s usual pain. There stood Frank, and Michael knew it would be just seconds before he had to face him in the middle of the hall. Frank came nearer.

W: Hey, everyone. Three years ago, I learned how to dive. Half of the training is in the class room about academic stuff and half is a practical in a swimming pool. I was learning with my mom and she was really worried about doing the kind of more academic stuff and passing the exam, but I found that part OK. It was the practical stuff that I had trouble with and she was really good. And then you have to do two dives outside. There was Ice on the water, so when we got there we were very nervous and didn’t want to get into the water. But once I was in, it was so freezing that I tried to go under the water. But the more I tried the harder it got. And then I got very disappointed and started to cry and then all my ears got blocked up. And I couldn’t get under, but eventually I managed it and went down. I passed my test and did all of the skills that I needed to do, so to sum up, it was a really difficult challenge. I’m so glad I managed it. For me it was quite an achievement.

第三段“Although Stephen King didn’t see his childhood as something extraordinary or special, he did say that he was always fascinated by scary things.(虽然斯蒂芬·金不认为自己的童年有什么特别的,但他确实说过他总是被可怕的东西迷住了。)”和最后一段“In 1973, Stephen King started his amazing journey of success when he published his first novel “Carrie”, which is scary. (1973年,斯蒂芬·金出版了他的第一部小说《魔女嘉莉》,开始了他惊人的成功之旅,这部小说是恐怖的。)”也
印证了这一推断。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“It turned out that one of his friends was hit by a train and died, which left an emotional scar on him.(原来,他的一个朋友被火车撞死了,这给他留下了情感上的伤疤。)”
根据划线词前半句“King, later on, dropped out of school due to some serious health concerns and was told that he had to enlist (入伍) again the next fall,(后来,金因为一些严重的健康问题而辍学,并被告知他必须在第二年秋天再次入伍,)”可知,金后来因为一些严重的健康问题而辍学,这是一件令人泄气的事,所以demotivated意为Discouraged“使泄气”之意。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“People used to acknowledge the King family by their love of literature, in fact whenever Stephen’s mom used to go out, she didn’t hire a babysitter, for the kids used to read novels to each other so they would not get bored.(人们过去常常以他们对文学的热爱来承认金一家,事实上,每当斯蒂芬的妈妈出去时,她都不会雇保姆,因为孩子们过去常常互相读小说,这样他们就不会感到无聊。)”

根据第一段中“A soundly sleeping brain monitors its surroundings. It also can respond to them without waking, a new study finds.”(熟睡的大脑会监控周围的环境。
根据第二段中“To do that, the participants would push a button with their right hand when they heard an animal name. Then they’d use their left hand to push a different button when the word represented some other type of object.”(为了做到这一点,当参与者听到一个动物的名字时,他们会用右手按一个按钮。
根据最后一段中“Those results also may help explain why meaningful sounds, such as a baby crying, a spoken name or a siren (警报) warning, may more easily wake someone than other sounds do.”(这些结果也可能有助于解释为什么有意义的声音,比如婴儿的哭声、一个人的名字或警笛声,比其他声音更容易把人吵醒。) 故选A项。
根据文章大意以及第一段“A soundly sleeping brain monitors its surroundings. It also can respond to them without waking, a new study finds. For instance, even in a short sleep during the daytime, a person’s brain can sort words correctly into different categories. This is not the first study to show that the sleeping mind can do useful work. Two years ago, researchers in Israel showed the sleeping brain can learn.”(熟睡的大脑会监控周围的环境。

根据第四段“The electronic tags transmit (传送) data via satellite when one of the sharks surfaces, allowing researchers to follow the animals’ movements online in real time. (当其中一条鲨鱼浮出水面时,电子标签通过卫星传输数据,使研究人员能够实时在线跟踪动物的活动。)”可知,科学家将Simon和Jekyll 这两条大白鲨打上标签是为了追踪其行动路线。故选B。
34.推理判断题。根据第五段“One study found that white sharks may remain close while hunting to benefit from food. “Surprisingly, we see more and more that white sharks might fit into that social category,” says Yannis Papastamatiou, a biologist at Florida International University. (一项研究发现,大白鲨在捕猎时可能会保持近距离以获取食物。佛罗里达国际大学的生物学家Yannis Papastamatiou说:令人惊讶的是,我们看到越来越多的白鲨可能属于这一社会类别。”)”可推断,Yannis可能认同以下观点——大白鲨有时会呈现群居动物的行为特征。故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, Salvador Jorgensen, a marine ecologist at California State University, thinks there may be other reasons why the pair followed the same route. (然而,加州州立大学的海洋生态学家Salvador Jorgensen认为,这对大白鲨走同样的路线可能还有其他原因。)”可推断,作者可能将介绍影响这对大白鲨行为的其他因素。故选C。

67. Then, suddenly, the unexpected happened. Just as Michael looked nervously, Frank somehow tripped over something. Down he fell onto the ground, sending all his books flying and spreading out on the floor. Although Michael was just as shocked, his mind was racing. Then Ramon's Grandma's words popped into his mind, “You can catch more flies with honey than
vinegar.” He knew what to do. Barely had Frank gotten up with loads of embarrassment when Michael went up.
Michael bent down and quickly picked up Frank's books on the floor. Offering them to him, Michael said with a smile, “You look like you could use an ally.” Now, it was Frank's turn to be numbed there with burning cheeks. He quickly took his books, muttered in a low voice, “Uh, thanks” and fled the scene.
