Christmas is coming, and it is time to warm yourself and head out to see some festive lights. There are plenty of choices when it comes to following a light path as part of your Christmas celebrations.
Oxford Street
Oxford Street’s festive lights are a treat for the eyes this year. However you’ll have to pick your hours carefully as the lights—which we returned on at the start of November—are only on for eight hours a day this year, from 3-11 pm, in the wake of the rising energy costs the country is facing. It is expected this will reduce energy usage by up to two thirds compared to previous years, when the lights have been on for 24 hours through November and December.
Kew Garden
One of the most famous light paths of the season, Christmas at Kew offers a full-on festive experience with over 2 km of lights to walk through. Along the way you’ll have the chance to sample festive food and drink, and possibly even say hello to Santa himself.
Regent Street
Regent Street’s lights are on the theme of The Spirit Of Christmas this year, bringing golden angels to the shopping street. The lights, which cover Regent Street and the St James neighbourhoods, were turned on on November 9, and like the Oxford St lights are turned on between 3 and 11 pm.
Covent Garden
A visit to Covent Garden will certainly get you in the festive spirit this year, with the central London destination offering a whole lot of lights—from 11 am until midnight every day until January 3. Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine—with over 40 different varieties there.
21.Why are Oxford Street’s festive lights just on for 8 hours a day this year
A.The public ask to turn off these lights.
B.The quality of these lights is not good.
C.The government wants to save energy
D.The country expects to differ from previous years.
22.In which place do the lights mainly focus on The Spirit Of Christmas
A.Oxford Street. B.Kew Gardens. C.Regent Street. D.Covent Garden.
23.What can visitors do when visiting Covent Garden
A.Take a shower.
B.See snow every day.
C.Pick out the favourite lights.
D.Enjoy many different kinds of wines.

So far this winter, a theater in the Alps has staged more than 60 unique concerts. Winter temperatures in the remote mountain village can drop high below zero. Performers wear down jackets and play ice instruments. In fact, almost everything from drums and guitars to horns and harps at the music festival is carved from ice even the stage the musicians play on. The audience sits on ice chairs and benches and claps their hands to listen, both to praise the performers and to keep themselves warm when the air flows through.
The musical instruments used were almost entirely made by an American ice artist, Tim Linhart. Since he created his first musical instrument out of ice more than a decade ago, he has already carved various ice instruments, including violins, violas, timber drum sets, xylophone, double bass, mandolin and cello. He also created his own large wind instrument, which uses the vibration of an ice tube to produce sound when the air flows through.
Linhart makes the different parts of the ice instrument and then uses a liquid mixed with snow to glue them together, with a metal support placed where the strings need to be. A violin can usually be made in two or three weeks, while larger instruments can take more time and efforts, sometimes taking months to make.
An ice instrument has a clearer sound than a wooden instrument. However, ice instruments are more easily broken or damaged than ordinary instruments. The temperature in the ice theater changes depending on the number of people in the audience. This also changes the temperature of the ice instruments, which in turn affects the 1 sound they produce. Musicians need to tune their instruments frequently during performances.
Although playing an ice instrument is not easy, Linhart believes that ice and snow are good materials for making instruments. The only downside is melting when the temperature is above freezing.
24.What is special about the music festival
A.It attracts only the locals. B.It usually lasts two months.
C.It has to be held in the cold. D.Its audience have to dress up.
25.What does the underlined word “vibration” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Temperature. B.Shaking. C.Length. D.Opening.
26.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us about ice instruments
A.Strengths and weaknesses. B.Production methods.
C.Specific materials. D.Different varieties.
27.What is the purpose of the text
A.To promote an idea. B.To explain a theory.
C.To share an event. D.To introduce a finding.

Bioluminescence (生物发光) is a natural phenomenon wherein a chemical reaction within an organism’s body produces light. It can be found in many places in nature — fireflies, some mushrooms — but mostly in the deep sea.
Recently, Rambouillet, a small historic French town, has teamed up with a company called Glowee to turn the city into a full-scale bioluminescence laboratory. The goal is to change the way in which cities use light. The company uses marine (海的) bacteria harvested from the coast of France. It makes some of the town’s public light up in the cool blue of bioluminescence.
These bioluminescent bacteria are stored in a seawater filled tube, giving the bacteria room to float around and light up. The light provided by the bacteria is part of their natural metabolism, so producing the light requires no energy other than that which is needed to feed the organisms. This makes it much more environmentally friendly and sustainable than electric light, which consumes a huge amount of non-renewable energy.
“On the way to lighting up the world with bioluminescence, you have to feed the bacteria and add water as they grow. That’s not so easy. The phenomenon will be very temperature-dependent and I doubt that it will work in the winter. Also, bioluminescence is not very bright compared to electrical lighting, though they have improved the light intensity,” Carl Johnson, a professor from Vanderbilt University said.
One potential solution to these issues — and one that Glowee is looking into — is to remove the biological aspect of the whole process. Theoretically, luciferase (荧光素酶) can be removed from the bacteria and used to create light instead of the bacteria itself. Because luciferase is non-living, it doesn’t need to be fed. Creating new means of sustainable lighting is a way of being environmentally friendly without plunging the earth back into darkness.
28.What do we know about Glowee
A.It is an ancient laboratory in France.
B.It solves power shortages in coastal cities.
C.It adopts bioluminescence as a light source.
D.It feeds marine organisms to produce chemicals.
29.What does Paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A.The reasons for energy waste.
B.The advantages of the marine bacteria as light.
C.The living conditions of the bioluminescent bacteria.
D.The difficulties of storing bioluminescent organisms.
30.What does Carl Johnson convey in his words
A.The bacteria work more efficiently under low temperatures.
B.It will cost too much to improve the luminescence intensity.
C.The application of bioluminescence enjoys a bright prospect.
D.The development of bioluminescence faces many challenges.
31.What could be the best title of this text
A.A Historic Town Lit up by Nature
B.The First Zero-carbon City in the World
C.A Reform of Producing Electricity in Cities
D.The Discovery of Luciferase in Marine Bacteria

“You’re so smart!” This encouraging response to children’s math performance is commonly heard. Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math motivation and achievement over time.
Parents who make comments linking their children’s performance to personal characteristics like intelligence are using what’s referred to as person responses. In contrast, parents who link their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.
For the study, researchers asked more than 500 parents to report on how they responded to their children’s math performance and their math beliefs and goals. Children were assessed in two waves across a year to measure their math motivation and achievement.
The results show that parents who view math ability as changeable are more likely to give process responses focused on their children’s strategy use and efforts rather than their intelligence or other personal characteristics. In contrast, parents who believe math ability is unchangeable and that math failure can’t be constructive give more person responses. Parents with high expectations for their children give a combination of both responses. While responses highlighting strategy and efforts are not related to any achievement outcomes, children who receive more responses about their personal characteristics -- in particular, related to failure -- are more likely to avoid harder math problems, exhibit higher levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests.
Because person responses predict poor math adjustment in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of responses at home. Another recommendation for parents is to think about their own beliefs and goals for their kids and examine how these might lead them to respond in person or process ways. Simply telling parents to avoid talking about math ability may not be enough. Focusing less on how children perform and more on their strategy and enjoyment of math might be a more effective way to enhance motivation.
32.Which of the following is an example of process response
A.You are a lucky dog. B.Running is in your blood.
C.What works well for your study D.Why are you such a math genius
33.What can be inferred from the study results
A.Parents prefer to give more process responses.
B.Children are more likely to be affected by math anxiety.
C.Process responses help with children’s math achievement.
D.Person responses can discourage children from learning math.
34.What do researchers advise parents to do
A.Restrict person responses. B.Defend their own beliefs.
C.Stress children’s performance. D.Ignore children’s math problems.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Strategy Children Adopt to Learn Math Helps
B.The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters
C.Responses to Enhance Children’s Math Performance
D.Suggestions for Parents to Teach Their Children Math

We’re getting more used to chatting to our computers and smart phones through all kinds of voice assistants. 36 People who can’t read or write can send and get information using the spoken web.
Some think voice could soon become the main way to interact online. They believe online interaction would soon depend mainly on the spoken web. 37
Building the spoken web-web-to-voice and voice-to-web—is by no means an easy task. For software, to answer simple questions about the weather and play music for us is easy. 38 AI technology isn’t smart enough yet. Even turning your voice into text is one of the hardest problems for it to solve. There are as many ways to pronounce things as there are people on the planet.
Using voice interaction makes people feel much kinder than surfing the net in the old way. 39 But if something speaks, it must also listen. Our phones are always near us and they are constantly collecting our personal information. This has already raised privacy concerns.
40 When you are driving or cooking, the voice assistant will be helpful. On the other hand, in a quiet library, using voice assistants to do something may not be as suitable as typing, as it could disturb others. The effectiveness of using voice depends on the specific surroundings.
A.But who can use the spoken web
B.But what are the challenges of moving to the spoken web
C.It is also possible to help teachers give lessons.
D.The benefits of using voice obviously depend on the situation you are in.
E.The voice of the assistant makes us feel like talking to a real person.
F.But to have a conversation with users on different kinds of topics is a long way off.
G.Out of these voice assistants, Siri is the most well-known spoken web(语音网络).

My husband and I had purchased the piano so our son and daughter could take piano lessons. But I had a secret dream that I did not share with anyone: I wanted to learn to play the piano and so that I could sit on a piano bench and perform one day.
Days later, I passed our announcement board, which listed items for sale, various jobs, and at the bottom, someone was offering piano lessons.
My voice trembled (颤抖) when I called the number the next day. When the tutor named Melody learned that I was the student, she hesitated. She had never taught a busy adult learner, but she was willing to try if I was determined to learn.
When my first lesson ended as arranged, Melody opened the door to her next student, a six-year-old boy full of enthusiasm. Melody introduced us and told me his name was Jeff. “I’m going to learn to play the piano,” he told me. No doubts or insecurities got in the boy’s way. His enthusiasm struck me, and on my way home, I whispered, “I’m going to learn to play the piano.”
However, I wasn’t a star pupil. I didn’t have instant recall on how to read music. Getting both hands to cooperate was difficult and then I was introduced to the pedal (踏板). Maybe I had been just too psychologically stressed out. Consequently, Melody blamed me for not practicing enough. Therefore, I had to look at my tight schedule to see where I could make time to improve myself.
The following week, Melody told me I would need to participate in the December performance and that I had to play by memory. I would have one month to memorize two pieces and I hadn’t even seen them yet! I was in despair and wanted to give up. “It’s the conventional (依照惯例的) way,” Melody said to me in a firm voice, “and even Jeff is memorizing the pieces he is playing. Think why you came here!”

Thanks to the driver, I arrived at the airport just in time at 1:50 p.m. to catch my plane which would leave ten minutes later. It was my first flight and I was a bit nervous. When the plane was taking off, my ears felt funny. I was really sick. Luckily it was all over after a while. On my window seat, I could enjoy the bird’s-eye view of beautiful cities, land, grass, forests and blue sea. Sometimes our plane flew right over the white clouds. Unluckily I didn’t see any hills. Maybe I missed them. What a wonderful view!

根据“Oxford Street”部分关键句“However you’ll have to pick your hours carefully as the lights—which we returned on at the start of November—are only on for eight hours a day this year, from 3-11 pm, in the wake of the rising energy costs the country is facing.”(然而,你必须仔细选择你的欣赏时间,由于国家面临能源成本不断上涨,我们在11月初重新开启的灯,今年每天只开8小时,从下午3点到11点。)
根据“Regent Street”部分关键句“Regent Street’s lights are on the theme of The Spirit Of Christmas this year, bringing golden angels to the shopping street.”(摄政街的灯光以今年的圣诞精神为主题,为购物街带来金色天使。)
根据“Covent Garden”部分关键句“Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine—with over 40 different varieties there.”(游客还可以在那里享受每天的阵雪,以及节日食品和40多种不同品种的热葡萄酒。)

根据第一段“So far this winter, a theater in the Alps has staged more than 60 unique concerts. Winter temperatures in the remote mountain village can drop high below zero. Performers wear down jackets and play ice instruments. In fact, almost everything from drums and guitars to horns and harps at the music festival is carved from ice even the stage the musicians play on. (今年冬天,阿尔卑斯山的一家剧院上演了60多场独特的音乐会。在这个偏远的山村,冬天的气温可能会降到零度以下。表演者穿着羽绒服,演奏冰上乐器。事实上,音乐节上从鼓、吉他到喇叭、竖琴,几乎所有的东西都是用冰雕刻的,即使是音乐家们演奏的舞台)”可知,音乐节的特别之处是必须在寒冷的地方举行。故选C。
25.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“He also created his own large wind instrument, which uses the vibration of an ice tube to produce sound when the air flows through.(他还创造了自己的大型管乐器,当空气流过时,它利用冰管的vibration产生声音)”可知,which引导的非限制性定语从句修饰先行词wind instrument,结合常识,乐器发声需要利用冰管的振动在空气流过时发出声音。
根据第四段“An ice instrument has a clearer sound than a wooden instrument. However, ice instruments are more easily broken or damaged than ordinary instruments. The temperature in the ice theater changes depending on the number of people in the audience. This also changes the temperature of the ice instruments, which in turn affects the 1 sound they produce. Musicians need to tune their instruments frequently during performances.(冰制乐器比木制乐器声音更清晰。然而,冰乐器比普通乐器更容易破碎或损坏。冰剧院里的温度会随着观众人数的变化而变化。这也会改变冰乐器的温度,进而影响它们发出的声音。音乐家在演出时需要经常调音)”可知,第4段主要告诉我们关于冰乐器的优点和缺点。故选A。

根据文章第二段“Recently, Rambouillet, a small historic French town, has teamed up with a company called Glowee to turn the city into a full-scale bioluminescence laboratory. The goal is to change the way in which cities use light. The company uses marine(海的)bacteria harvested from the coast of France. It makes some of the town’s public light up in the cool blue of bioluminescence.(最近,法国历史悠久的小城朗布耶与一家名为Glowee的公司合作,将这座城市变成一个全面的生物发光实验室。其目标是改变城市使用光线的方式。该公司使用的是来自法国海岸的海洋细菌。它让小镇上的一些公众在生物发光的冷蓝色中发光。)”可知,关于Glowee这个公司我们了解到的是,它主要研究采用生物发光作为光源。故选C项。
29.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“The light provided by the bacteria is part of their natural metabolism, so producing the light requires no energy other than that which is needed to feed the organisms. This makes it much more environmentally friendly and sustainable than electric light, which consumes a huge amount of non-renewable energy.(细菌提供的光是它们自然新陈代谢的一部分,所以产生光不需要能量,只需要生物体所需的能量。这使得它比消耗大量不可再生能源的电灯更加环保和可持续。)”可知,第三段主要讲得是海洋细菌作为光源的优点。故选B项。
30.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“On the way to lighting up the world with bioluminescence, you have to feed the bacteria and add water as they grow. That’s not so easy. The phenomenon will be very temperature-dependent and I doubt that it will work in the winter. Also, bioluminescence is not very bright compared to electrical lighting, though they have improved the light intensity(在用生物发光照亮世界的路上,你必须给细菌喂食,并在它们生长的过程中加水。
故选A项。

根据第二段中“In contrast, parents who link their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.(相比之下,将孩子的行为(如努力或策略的使用)与他们的表现联系起来的父母正在使用过程反应。)”
根据倒数第二段中“While responses highlighting strategy and efforts are not related to any achievement outcomes, children who receive more responses about their personal characteristics -- in particular, related to failure -- are more likely to avoid harder math problems, exhibit higher levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests.(虽然强调策略和努力的回答与任何成绩结果无关,但收到更多关于个人特征(特别是与失败有关的)回答的孩子更有可能避免更难的数学问题,表现出更高的数学焦虑水平,在数学成绩测试中得分更低。)”
根据最后一段中“Because person responses predict poor math adjustment in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of responses at home.(因为个人反应预示着孩子随着时间的推移会有较差的数学适应能力,研究人员建议父母在家里限制这种反应。)”
通读整篇文章,尤其是第一段中“Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math motivation and achievement over time.(最近,乔治亚大学进行的一项新研究发现,随着时间的推移,鼓励孩子用与他们的个人特征或天生能力相关的回答可能会削弱他们的数学动机和成就。)” 所以B项“The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters(父母与孩子谈论数学问题的方式)”可作为最恰当的题目,故选B。

以及下一段“Building the spoken web-web-to-voice and voice-to-web—is by no means an easy task.(建立语音网络——网络到语音和语音到网络绝不是一件容易的事。)” 故B选项“But what are the challenges of moving to the spoken web (但是转向“语音网络”的挑战是什么?)”
38.根据上文“Building the spoken web-web-to-voice and voice-to-web—is by no means an easy task. For software, to answer simple questions about the weather and play music for us is easy. (建立语音网络——网络到语音和语音到网络绝不是一件容易的事。对于软件来说,回答关于天气的简单问题和为我们播放音乐是很容易的。)”以及后文“AI technology isn’t smart enough yet. Even turning your voice into text is one of the hardest problems for it to solve. There are as many ways to pronounce things as there are people on the planet. (人工智能技术还不够聪明。甚至把你的声音转换成文字也是最难解决的问题之一。地球上有多少人,就有多少种发音方法。)”可知,上文提到了运用语音网络询问关于天气的简单问题,后文则提到了人工智能还不够聪明,可知本句与上文构成转折关系,指出存在的缺点。故F选项“But to have a conversation with users on different kinds of topics is a long way off. (但是与用户就不同的话题进行对话还有很长的路要走)”符合语境,故选F。
39.根据上文“Using voice interaction makes people feel much kinder than surfing the net in the old way. (使用语音交互让人们感觉比用旧的方式上网更友好。)”以及后文“But if something speaks, it must also listen. Our phones are always near us and they are constantly collecting our personal information. This has already raised privacy concerns.(但如果有东西说话,它也必须倾听。我们的手机总是在我们身边,它们不断地收集我们的个人信息。这已经引起了人们对隐私的担忧。)”可知,本句承接上文,说明语音互动可以带来的亲密感,故E选项“The voice of the assistant makes us feel like talking to a real person. (助理的声音让我们感觉像在和一个真人说话。)”能承上启下,符合语境,故选E。
40.根据后文“When you are driving or cooking, the voice assistant will be helpful. On the other hand, in a quiet library, using voice assistants to do something may not be as suitable as typing, as it could disturb others. The effectiveness of using voice depends on the specific surroundings. (当你开车或做饭时,语音助手会很有帮助。另一方面,在安静的图书馆里,使用语音助手做一些事情可能不像打字那样合适,因为它可能会打扰别人。使用声音的有效性取决于特定的环境。)”可知,后文提到了使用语音的不同环境,有的环境里使用语音很方便,而有的环境会打扰别人,说明使用语音取决于环境。故D选项“The benefits of using voice obviously depend on the situation you are in.(使用语音的好处显然取决于您所处的环境。)”

I had wanted to play the piano not just to accompany my children but to express myself and to share with them something special that only I could offer. I began to practice diligently. I could feel the notes under my fingers and the rhythm in my heartbeat. The final test came.
On the day of the performance, I stepped slowly onto the stage. I took a deep breath, and then I began to play. The music flowed from my fingers and filled the room. I played with all my heart, all my passion, all my love for the piano. When the last note sounded, the room erupted into applause. I had done it! I smiled and bowed, feeling proud under the approval and encouragement of the audience. It was a moment of pure joy and triumph that I would remember for a lifetime.
