The idiom “shoot for the stars” has just taken on a literal meaning for cancer survivor Hayley Arceneaux from Memphis, Tennessee. On February 22,29-year-old Hayley was selected to be one of four crew members of the SpaceX Inspiration 4—the world’s first civilian astronaut mission.
Two decades ago, Hayley happened to go to the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas with her family. “I got to see where the astronauts received training and I wanted to be an astronaut after that,” she recalls.
However, the young girl’s dream was derailed a year later when she was diagnosed with bone cancer. Fortunately, the expert at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis stopped its spread by replacing the diseased bones with metal rods in the left leg. Learning her dream of becoming an astronaut would probably never be realized, the young girl decided to work with young cancer patients at the hospital where she had been cured.
As it turned out, Hayley’s dream of going to space was far from over. On January 5, she got a surprise call from Jared Isaacman, founder of Shift 4 Payments, seriously asking her if she’d like to go to space. “Immediately I said, ‘Yes, yes, absolutely!’” Arceneau s said.
When SpaceX announced the world’s firs all-commercial astronaut mission, the 37-year- old billionaire instantly booked the available four seats. To make the journey more meaningful, Isaacman announced he’d donate three seats to members of the general public.
Haylay, the first crew member to be announced, will represent “hope” —a nod to her survival of cancer and frontline work at St. Jude. The second passenger, representing “generosity”, will be chosen randomly from a sweepstake (抽奖) to raise $200 million for the cancer hospital, which treats children at no charge. The last seat, representing “prosperity”, will be given to an entrepreneur who adopts the Shift 4 Payments platform for their company.
While Hayley is set to be the first person with a so-called disability to go to space, she won’t be the last.
24.What inspired Hayley to dream to be an astronaut
A.Her fight against cancer. B.Volunteering at a hospital.
C.Her visit to a space center. D.The 2-year special training.
25.What does the underlined word “derailed” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
A.Realized. B.Disturbed. C.Assessed. D.Considered.
26.How did Hayley respond to the request from Jared Isaacman’s call
A.She agreed without hesitation. B.She said her dream had been over.
C.She didn’t take it seriously at first. D.She had no choice but to refuse.
27.Why was Hayley selected to be one of the four crew members
A.She has cured those suffering from cancer. B.She has always been hoping to go to space.
C.She is lucky to stand out from a sweepstake. D.She is a symbol of hope as a cancer survivor.

The Chinese people have developed the habit of ordering more dishes than they can eat when inviting guests for dinner in a restaurant, because if all the plates are empty at the end of the dinner, it would be considered a matter of shame to the host. Surveys show that as much as 35 million tons of food is wasted in China every year.
To solve this problem, the “Clean Your Plate” campaign was launched in 2013 and got a positive response from restaurant owners, the public, and governments at different levels. More and more waiters are now reminding diners to stop ordering more if they have ordered enough to make them full. Also, most restaurant owners nowadays provide free boxes with which the diners can carry the leftovers (剩菜) home.
The “Clean Your Plate” campaign has become popular along with the “save water” and “go green” activities. However, since it takes generations for people to change their bad habits, it’s too early to celebrate its success. Instead, more attention should be paid to preventing food waste at home.
Almost every Chinese family has a “waste bin”. Unfortunately, I happen to be the “waste bin” of my family. I used to enjoy eating leftovers until I heard an expert on TV saying that it causes cancer. Many doctors say the same thing. But later, I saw other experts doing experiments and concluding that food cooked hours ago or even a day ago shows no obvious increase in carcinogenic particles(致癌颗粒) if stored properly. Their disagreement has left me confused. I have no idea who is right, but I am clear that if all the leftovers are thrown away as suggested by some experts, it would be a big waste of food.
28.Why was the “Clean Your Plate” campaign launched
A.To invite guests for dinner. B.To save people’s face.
C.To reduce food waste. D.To stop unbalanced diet.
29.What is the effect of this campaign on people
A.Waiters are reminded to stop ordering more.
B.Free boxes are provided by most restaurant owners.
C.People are eager to change their bad habits earlier.
D.People pay more attention to preventing food waste at home.
30.What does the author think of the leftovers
A.Eating leftovers causes cancer.
B.Leftovers should be thrown into the waste bin.
C.Throwing all the leftovers would be a big waste of food.
D.Properly stored leftovers won’t cause damage to health.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.An introduction to a campaign. B.The ways to deal with leftovers.
C.An explanation of food waste. D.The eating habits of Chinese.

Parents can cut the chances of their children getting fat simply by keeping them longer at table. Just three minutes extra at a family mealtime could help prevent child obesity. Research found that among poor families, the extra minutes at mealtimes made great improvement of a normal weight for the youth. The factors are likely to be communication and the importance of a scheduled mealtime.
Dr Barbara Fiese said, “Children, whose families have a 20-minute meal over four times a week, weigh less than kids who leave the table after 15 to 17 minutes. Over time, those extra minutes per meal add up and become really powerful.”
The researchers studied 200 family mealtimes, testing the effects of factors and mealtime behavior of families with children in primary school. They found that families, who said that shared mealtimes were an important part of family life and had special meaning for them, were less likely to have an obese child. Similarly, families, who talked more together and interacted more positively during the meal, were more likely to have healthy-weight children.
Teaching low-income families how to make the most of family mealtimes was a wise idea. Dr Fiese said, “This is something we can target and teach.” She added, “It’s also important to recognize the increasing differences of families and their sometimes complex living arrangements that may challenge their abilities to plan ahead and arrange a single time to communicate with each other.”
Families in poorer US neighborhoods faced a lot of problems, including poor access to healthy food. But even so, regular high quality family mealtimes made a difference to the children’s weight. Dr Fiese said, “Three to four extra minutes per meal will make a healthy weight more possible.”
32.According to the passage, to have a healthy-weight child, parents should ______.
A.limit the food for each meal B.increase their eating time
C.shorten the mealtime D.make them eat healthy food
33.How much time is reasonable for one meal according to the passage
A.About 15 minutes. B.About 17 minutes.
C.About 20 minutes. D.About 30 minutes.
34.Why does a longer mealtime make a difference to a normal weight
A.Because people can have a good rest as they eat meals.
B.Because people can have time to choose what they like.
C.Because people can use mealtimes to do other things.
D.Because people can communicate more in the scheduled time.
35.What does Dr Fiese suggest to us
A.Parents should not communicate during mealtime.
B.It’s better to add three to four extra minutes to one meal.
C.Four meals a day will make a difference to the children’s weight.
D.Twenty extra minutes per meal make a healthy weight.

How to Sleep Better
What you do (or don’t do) before bedtime has significant impact on the quality of your sleep. 36 Here are a few suggestions:
Go from light to dark. Darkness stimulates production of the sleep hormone. 37 And think about investing into warm light that you can use in the bed-room before bedtime.
38 Keep the bedroom a technology-free zone as the light from electronic devices can disturb your sleep. If you need to work, wear blue light blocking glasses (also known as computer glasses) throughout or before you sleep to prevent sleep disruption.
Find an activity that helps you to wind down. This could be anything that calms you down, and reduces thinking. For example, listening to soothing(柔和的) music, taking a hot bath, reading or meditating.
Keep any electronics you have on the other side of the room or outside the room. One of the most harmful things that can disrupt your sleep is the notifications you get from your smartphones. 39
Create a bedtime routine. A night routine is a couple of things you do prior to going to bed. By doing these things every night, you’ll have a more restful and high-quality sleep.
Adjust your sleep temperature. The ideal temperature for sleep is 60~67 Farenheit(华氏度). This may be cooler than what most people are used to. 40 Rule of thumb: sleeping in cooler temperature is better for sleep quality than warmer temperature.
A.Avoid screens.
B.Sleep better from now on.
C.Turn off unused light around the house.
D.The higher the temperature is, the better you sleep.
E.The simplest way to avoid this is to keep it away from you.
F.Many times, it can be the difference between staying up until 4 am and sleeping like a baby.
G.But keep in mind that our body temperature changes once we fall asleep.

Finders Keepers
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted. It was a short distance, so I knew they were safe and no trouble would befall (降临) them.
One warm spring day, a cute puppy (小狗) followed them home after school. When my husband got home that evening, she climbed into his lap to watch TV. The girls were both begging me to keep her.
She had no collar(项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up.
By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time the girls took responsibility for another life.
The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was pleading(恳求) for the return of a lost puppy in the vicinity(附近) of our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly tucked(把……塞进) the paper away in the closet. There was only one problem: my conscience was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our puppy was the one they were desperately seeking.
It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. Finally, with sweaty palms (手掌), I lifted the receiver and dialed. Secretly I was praying no one would answer, but someone did. The voice on the other end was that of a young woman. After describing the dog to her in detail, she wanted to come right over.

A Firefighting Drill
Yesterday, a firefighting drill was conducted in our school with all teachers and students involved to arouse our awareness of fire prevention techniques.
The drill started with an alarm, hearing which students quickly evacuated the classrooms orderly under the guidance of the teachers to the appointed place. The fire escape routes were clearly marked, and fire extinguishers were readily available throughout the school. So it was five minutes later that all the building were emptied and students and teachers gathered on the playground. Our principal announced the drill was performed better than scheduled.
Both teachers and students appreciated the opportunity to learn about fire safety. Many expressed their gratitude for the school’s initiative in organizing such a drill, as it increased their confidence and awareness in dealing with potential fire hazards.
读后续写(满分25分)
Within minutes she was at my door and I asked her to come in. One look at the puppy and the woman’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. “Here, Lucy,” she called. “Come to Mamma.” Lucy instantly obeyed, wagging her tail in delight at the sound of the woman’s voice. Obviously, she belonged to the woman. I felt like my heart was being ripped from my chest. I wanted to grab the dog and run. Instead, I smiled faintly. After some chat, it was time for them to go home.
Opening the door, I noticed a little girl in the car with a small wheelchair next to her. When the child saw the puppy, a bright smile spread across her face. The woman saw me look at the chair and offered an explanation. Lucy was given to her daughter to promote emotional healing after a car accident. When Lucy disappeared, the little girl had gone into a deep depression, refusing to come out of the shell she was in. Suddenly I felt very guilty for my selfishness and the terrible time they had been through. I knew I had done the right thing--that puppy was exactly where she belonged.
