　　Middle school student Joaquin invented a car seat alarm system to remind parents that their child is in the backseat.He did so after reading a shocking story of a father whose baby died of heat stroke after accidentally being left in a hot car.Joaquin felt something had to be done to prevent this.The following is what he told a reporter.
A closed car increased the surrounding temperature, leading to a sharper increase in temperature when parked in the sun and children overheat several times faster than adults.Of the 360 deaths caused by heat stroke in cars in America in the last decade, most were caused when a child was forgotten inside a car.
This was why I designed an alarm to warn drivers of the case.To detect when a baby was in a car seat, I tried working with a weight sensor, but it produced too many false signs.After more research, I used a magnetic sensor, which could be activated when the seat belt was closed.If a driver locked the car with the baby in, the car alarm system would start sounding, and the car would not lock.
I have participated in several science fair competitions.STEM is the main source of knowledge for every field in the world and it needn't be a complicated subject at school.This is what first interested me, which changed the way I saw the world.
Broadcom MASTERS has encouraged me to pursue STEM.When I was presenting my project at Texas Science Fair 2017, the judges came by and I felt I failed.Then I saw four families crowding around my board—I was shocked.They wanted me to present my project to them because they knew about it from the news.They asked me to talk to their kids to inspire them.
My advice is: Work hard, and do what you enjoy.Instead of always watching TV, think how you can create something you're interested in.
