Every year on Sept. 30, translators around the world celebrate International Translation Day. In 2023, under the theme "Translation unveils the many faces of humanity", we dug into the various aspects of translation through the stories of one individual.
In the view of Xie Cun, a lecturer at Beijing Foreign Studies University, translators are like tour guides in the world of literature.
"A good guide doesn't stand in front of the scenery talking endlessly but uses their knowledge and experience to lead tourists to the best viewpoints, offering explanations when necessary, and allowing tourists to experience the rest on their own," he said. "I believe good translators do the same." Xie's opinion comes from his eight years of experience as a literary translator. Over his career, Xie has translated many literary works.
Xie's journey into literary translation began with his cross-linguistic(跨语言学的)academic(学术的)background. During his undergraduate studies in Chinese language and literature, he discovered the power of translation. "I noticed that the same sentence could be translated in a moving way by one person but in an inactive manner by another. This comparison inspired me to give it a shot," Xie explained.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Xie chose to pursue translation as his master's major, focusing on research and practice in the field.
For Xie, the combination of two languages can create amazing connections, spreading language with new possibilities. "Literary creation can only shape one author. However, literary translation allows me to become countless authors, shaping a new self through the collision(碰撞)of different voices," he said.
"I hope that the young people who are about to begin the path of literary translation can protect modern Chinese language with love and responsibility, contributing to the growth of our language and literature with the nutrients(营养物)of foreign literature,"he said.

A. By reading many literary works.
B. By comparing different versions of translation.
C. By translating the same sentence in various ways.
D. By majoring in literary translation and linguistics.
27. Who are Xie's words in the last paragraph aimed at
A. Translators desiring to broaden their horizons.
B. Researchers who are working on the translation skills.
C. Young people who will get down to literary translation.

For the first time, scientists have grown plants in moon soil collected by NASA's Apollo astronauts.
Seeing the results, Robert Ferl of the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences said, "Plants actually grow in lunar stuff. Are you kidding me " He and other researchers planted thale cress, a small flowering plant, in moon soil returned from the Apollo missions.
The good news was that all of the seeds grew. The bad news was that after the first week, the lunar soil stressed the plants so much that they grew slowly. Most of the moon plants were stunted. The longer the soil was exposed to radiation(辐射)and solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do. The soil collected by the Apollo 11 mission was the least helpful for growth.
Simon Gilroy of the University of Wisconsin-Madison said," This is a big step forward to know that you can grow plants." Gilroy added, "The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon."
Moon dirt is full of glass particles(颗粒),which got in the Apollo lunar landers and wore down the moonwalkers' spacesuits. One solution might be to use younger geologic(地质的)spots on the moon, like lava flows(熔岩流),for digging up soil. The environment also could be changed by adding special nutrient mixtures or artificial lighting.
Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back by the six Apollo crews that landed on the moon. Most of them are still locked away, forcing researchers to experiment with soil made of volcanic ash on Earth. In 2021, NASA finally gave out 12grams of soil to the University of Florida researchers for the planting experiment. NASA said the timing for such an experiment was right, with the space agency looking to put astronauts back on the moon soon.
28.What can we know about Ferl's experiment
A. The plants planted grew quickly.
B. It ended after the Apollo missions.
C. It was conducted on the moon surface.
D. The results made him feel unbelievable.
29.What does the underlined word "stunted" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Appealing. B. Super. C. Unsafe. D. Undeveloped.
30. Which of the following can be inferred about soils from younger geologic spots
A. They mainly include lava flows.
B. They can serve as artificial lighting.
C. They might have fewer glass particles.
D. They have nothing to do with moon dirt.
31.Why did NASA believe the suitable timing arrived
A. More astronauts would be sent to collect moon soil again.
B. Some moon soil had been shared with other researchers.
C. Apollo crews returned with enough moon dirt and rocks.
D. Researchers were unwilling to experiment with earth stuff.

We've all heard "use your time wisely" at least once in our lives. But what does that mean How can we use our time "wisely" In an increasingly urbanizing world, we are getting more and more busy. Thus, things we do to relax, like reading a book, or going out with friends are becoming more rare.
There have been many studies that indicate how relaxation and going out with friends can improve your mental and physical health. Being able to take part in an enjoyable hobby or spend time with someone you enjoy being around can help release "feel good" hormones(激素)that can ease some stress in your daily life.
But of course, sometimes when I find myself enjoying a book, playing a video game, or surfing the Internet, I get this awful feeling immediately after that I could have used that time to do something productive like taking textbook notes or finishing homework.
However, even if it isn't obvious, doing those little things prevents us from burning out too fast. It creates positive memories in your mind that will hopefully get you through a tough time. You need to "waste time" in order to be productive later on. That's what the popular idea of a work-life balance tells us, which claims that we should have a balance between spending time on jobs or studying and the time spent with family, friends, and pursuing hobbies and interests. According to this model, you should be doing things you enjoy so that you can keep the balance.
We can use our time "wisely" by doing things that help us finish our degree or getting accepted into that one job, but we can also use our time "wisely" by taking some time to do what we love. There is no such thing as "wasting time" when it benefits you in the long run. The "work-life balance" that everyone talks about is important in this regard and we should all learn how to maintain that healthily.
32. How many kinds of relaxation are mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. Five. B. Four. C. Three. D. Two.
33. Why does the author feel terrible after relaxation
A. Guilt arises from doing less fruitful things.
B. Balance between tasks and rests is broken.
C. Too little time is wasted on relaxing activities.
D. Relaxation will be replaced by busy days soon.
34. Which of the following is the benefit of "wasting time" according to Paragraph 4
A. Keeping us in high spirits all the time.
B. Improving our efficiency and brainpower.
C. Keeping the balance between work and life.
D. Enabling us to handle troubles in a wise way.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. On Wasting Time B. On Using Time Wisely
C. On Relaxation D. On Work-life Balance

What Goes Around Comes Around
One day a man saw an old lady on the side of the road. Noticing she might need help, he pulled up, got out and found that she had a flat tire(瘪胎).The lady was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. He could see that she was so afraid, standing out there in the cold. He said, "I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm By the way, I am Bryan Anderson."
As he was changing her tire, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid.
When the work was finished, the lady asked how much she owed him, wiling to accept any amount. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance he or she needed, and Bryan added," And think of me."
He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the darkness.
A few miles down the road the lady went into a small café. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She still had a sweet smile even though she mentioned that her husband died and she had to make a living by herself. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let her condition change her positive attitude.
