Have you ever paid close attention to a cloud and noticed its ever-changing forms If not, you could be missing out on something quite wondrous.
Cloud spotting doesn't require much. Sometimes, it can be an invitation to be marveled(惊叹) by something so common that we've become blind to it. Or you can go deeper, trying to make sense of the sky by learning the different cloud types.
A pop science blogger surnamed Zheng, 25, known as the "Cloud Collector" on the lifestyle platform Xiaohongshu, initially started her account to share cloud photos in 2022. Zheng, who enjoys finding delight in recording the beauty of daily life, considered it a way to spread lovely moments to more people. "Clouds have always served as a source of comfort for me," said Zheng based in Fujian.
For Zheng, one of her most unforgettable cloud-spotting experiences occurred during a flight. It was the first time that she had seen a special natural phenomenon called a "glory", produced by water drops in the air. It appeared as a hazy(模糊的) light point in the middle of a circular rainbow halo(圆形彩虹光环). "It was such a surprise," Zheng recalled.
As a growing number of online users began to show interest and raise questions, Zheng realized that she could offer more science content about cloud spotting. So she started to learn more by referring to specialized books and consulting individuals with expertise in meteorology(气象学).
Zheng has now shared nearly 200 pieces of popular science content, including cloud identification, formation, comparisons of different cloud types and weather-related knowledge. Her account now has over 210,000 followers on Xiaohongshu, and there are five group chats on the platform where thousands of users share their daily cloud-watching experiences.
Looking ahead, Zheng has plans to hold several gallery exhibitions. "The first round of exhibitions will be in Xiamen in Fujian and Chengdu in Sichuan," Zheng said, adding that she's gathering more cloud photos and the unique stories behind them. By doing this, she hopes to inspire more people to appreciate the beauty of the "gentle white giants(巨人)" in the sky.
24. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. Introduce an event. B. Lead in the topic.
C. Share an opinion. D. Describe a scene.

People hate mosquitoes due to their blood-sucking tendencies. Scientists, too, are troubled by mosquitoes and have been researching ways to keep them away.
A team of researchers from Virginia Tech in the US looked into different kinds of soap. They invited volunteers to test how four different soap flavors attract mosquitoes. After analyzing the mosquitoes behavior, the researchers discovered several chemicals in the soap that can influence the mosquitoes' "choice of food". Two chemicals, one with the smell of coconut and another with the scent of flowers, can keep the insects away.
The team also found that what matters to mosquitoes is not just the chemicals, but rather the combination of chemicals with each person's smell. For example, people who attract mosquitoes can be more attractive to them after using one type of soap. They can also repel mosquitoes by using another kind of soap. The finding were "remarkable", said senior author Clement Vinauger in a news release, adding that he would choose a coconut-scented soap to keep mosquitoes away.
How these insects manage to find humans has also made scientists curious. According to a new study published in Current Biology, researchers built a "canteen" for hundreds of mosquitoes. In the 20-by-20-meter facility, there were six pads that had the smell of different humans. The pads were heated to mimic sleeping humans.
They found that the insects can track scents up to 60 meters. Also, mosquitoes are most attracted to a kind of chemical called carboxylic(羧基的) acid, which is usually produced by bacteria on human skin. The smell of one participant wasn't attractive to the insects, and researchers believed it was due to the person's diet, which is mainly plant-based foods. By analyzing the chemicals that either attract or repel mosquitoes, scientists are able to improve mosquito repellent. With more studies, scientists believe changing a person's diet could one day make them "mosquito-proof". This is especially beneficial for regions where mosquitoes carry diseases, such as malaria, CNN reported.
28. Which of the following can explain the underlined word "repel"
A. Rely on. B. Give off. C. Drive away. D. Decide on.

B. People dislike mosquitoes mainly because they carry disease.
C. A Plant-based diet can possibly protect people from being bitten by mosquitoes.
D. Mosquitoes are not sensitive to carboxylic acid that is produced by human skin.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this passage appear
A. Animals. B. Medicine. C. Entertainment. D. Science.

From AI-made jokes to Harry Potter fashion videos, AI can be used to make funny stuff. But can it be as funny as a human And if it can, does it present a danger to comedy writers in the future That's something performers have been looking at in this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe, running from Aug 4 to 28.
Anyone can put on a show at the Fringe, and this year even robots were getting in on the act. One of Fringe's big shows even used a small robot to come up with jokes from audience suggestions, which were then performed by humans. The results could be very funny, but sometimes they weren't funny at all. That was part of the point, explained Piotr Mirowski, the show's co-maker.
"We do not use humans to show off AI; instead, we use AI to show its limitations, to showcase human creativity on the stage," said Mirowski, according to the Guardian.
Comedian Pierre Novellie said that it will take a long time for AI to get good at creating comedy. "Comedy is the last thing that AI is going to get near," Pierre told Sky News.
"Even normal human comedians struggle to tune their jokes for the right crowd at the right time, every time. But that's what's interesting about stand-up and fun." But one performer at the Fringe said he's using AI to make jokes for him because he's out of edian Peter Bazely's show has him playing a supporting role to "an entirely computer-generated comedian" called AI Jesus. The Fringe review website, Chortle, talked about today's AI concerns: "In a world where artists are worried that AI could end up doing their jobs for them, Bazely is said to be praying this one will do exactly that."
The reasons for companies wanting to use AI are certainly understandable, but the dangers they present to many people's jobs are becoming more and more real, and that's not very funny.
Back in March of this year, a letter calling for a six-month stop on advanced AI development was signed by over 1000 people working with AI technologies including Elon Musk and other well-known tech leaders, reported The New York Times. Then, in May, leaders in the AI industry signed a document from the Center for AI Safety warning that AI could present an exhibition-level danger and "should be a global priority alongside pandemics and nuclear war."
32. How does the author begin this text
A. By raising questions. B. By listing figures.
C. By making comparison. D. By quoting others.
33. According to Mirowski, what may be a purpose of Fringe show
A. To show off AI's power. B. To reveal AI's disadvantages.
C. To present AI's creativity. D. To promote AI's development.
34. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph
A. Humans have no imagination in making jokes.
B. Most comedians give up playing leading roles.
C. AI can always meet different audience's demand.
D. Not all artists are worried to be replaced by AI.
35. What is the attitude of the author toward the application of AI
A. Positive. B. Concerned. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.

Life isn't fair. Some people just seem blessed with the ability to effortlessly charm(吸引) anyone they meet. Well, it might seem like a magic al power, but in fact there are a number of factors at work. 36 The answer is: to a large extent, yes you can.
But first, the bad news. People at first judge each other according to physical appearance. With just a glimpse of a face, people make quick judgements about each other's likeability, trustworthiness and confidence. How should we deal with this 37 People regard a smiling face as more trustworthy, warmer and sociable. It sounds like common sense, doesn't it Smile and others will smile with you.
What other tricks might we have 38 Consequently, three things we can do to signal that we are not a threat: raise our eyebrows quickly, raise our heads slightly, and once again, to smile.
So we've looked at body language, but of course what you say is hugely important too, unless you want to just stand there smiling foolishly. The golden rule of friendship is if you make people feel good about themselves, they're going to like you. In other words, you should not talk about yourself and all your wonderful achievements. 39 .
Finally, finding common ground helps form a connection. Charming people are particularly skilled at seeking out shared interests or experiences to bond with others. 40 And if all else fails, you can fall back on that most British topic: the weather. It can be a nice start of a conversation.
A. Instead, you need to show interest in them. B. So, can you learn to develop superhuman charm C. There's one surprisingly simple tool: your smile. D. Shared interests are the key to making connections with others. E. Asking where someone's from allows you to find areas in common. F. Our brains often survey the environment for friend or enemy signals. G. What good tricks might we take advantage of to become charming

When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby(电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat's lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled(蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs Lim was hysterical(歇斯底里).
Paragraph 1:"We will never get out!" she cried with her face pale. _________________________________

Paragraph 2: Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door.______

应用文写作:
An Unforgettable Activity in High School
My high school has witnessed many colorful activities in the past 2 years, among which the coming-of-age ceremony is especially unforgettable.
Present at the ceremony were all students from Grade 2, along with our parents and teachers. It kicked off with an inspiring speech delivered by our president, which conveyed congratulations and expectations about our future. Then came a series of activities, ranging from expressing gratitude to our parents and teachers to making a promise of being responsible for the adulthood. The highlight was when we walked through the coming-of-age gate.
The ceremony will be rooted in my mind as a reminder that I should shoulder my responsibility as an adult.
读后续写:
Para 1:"We will never get out!" she cried with her face pale. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar. "Help!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, trying to get someone's attention. A wave of despair washed over me. I felt like we could never get out. In one last effort, I tried banging on the doors. The next few minutes felt like hours as we waited in complete silence.
Para 2: Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. Help was finally here! The brave firefighters hit the door open using their tools. It felt like a hundred pound weight was lifted off me, and Mrs Lim thanked the heavens that someone had come to our rescue. I made a sigh of relief when the doors were finally opened and all this drama was over. The firefighters praised me for helping Mrs Lim. I returned their praise with gratitude and Mrs Lim thanked me and even gave me a hug.

I realized that in my hurry, I had forgotten to put my glasses on. Fortunately, I always kept a spare in my backpack. I reached into the backpack, but I found only a pen and a notebook in there! Only 5 minutes until the train would leave! I went to the ticket window and knocked on it but no one was there. All of a sudden, my eyes flew open. I was still in bed, and the alarm hadn't gone off yet. I got up immediately, and was happy that I hadn't missed my train.
