To make sure everything is OK with the elderly citizens living alone, community workers on Jiangsu Street in Shanghai recently equipped them with smart devices on water taps. If an elderly citizen uses less than 0.01m3 of water in around 12 hours, the device will automatically send an alarm to the community workers, who will then rush to check. Meanwhile, they also plan to install a device on the doors of the lonely elderly citizens to remind them of shutting the doors for a certain length of time.
The move has won much applause (掌声) on social networking sites, with many praising a major
example of technology serving people and calling for its application across the country.
Smart devices indeed make our lives better, but the key element in the Shanghai experience is not technology, but the human touch. Installing smart devices on water taps and doors is not difficult. All one needs is a sensor, a SIM card, and a coding allowing it to make calls. However, no one knows when an emergency occurs. One needs to ensure that a community worker is waiting behind the system to hear the alarm which could go off late in the night . When getting the alarm, the worker must go and have a check.
To ensure that the system works smoothly, community workers have to be there on duty 24 hours a day
and seven days a week. Therefore, it is the community workers’ devotion, but not so much the smart device, that plays the most important part in the whole system by caring for the elderly citizens.
Of course, the contribution of those who came up with the idea should not be forgotten. It might be a
good idea to reward them so that they can be encouraged to do even better.
What’s the purpose of equipping smart devices for the lonely elderly people
To send a warn to the elderly citizens.
To check the amount of water they use.
To help the community workers do their jobs.
To guarantee the elderly’s health and safety.
Which word may best describe people’s attitude to installing smart devices
A. Positive. B. Negative.
C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful
26 What plays an important part in carrying out this move
A. The device installing techniques. B. The elderly citizens themselves.
The advanced operating system. D. The community workers’ commitment.
What does the passage mainly tell us
To help the lonely elderly equip smart devices.
To take care of the lonely elderly in the community.
C To use smart devices to care for the lonely elderly.
To work for the lonely elderly as a community worker.

A group of researchers have developed a new material which is soft but very strong. It can be worn and washed like ordinary clothing and could finally turn sports clothes into smart “wearables”.
The so-called “carbon nanotube threads” (碳纳米管线) can be used to measure heart rate to test heart
conditions. But instead of having to be stuck on the skin, they can be fixed on a T-shirt and worn like usual athletic wear. The researchers say the threads can comfortably move with the wearer, and be washed and worn repeatedly without breaking down.
Though going into production for customers is still a long way off, the material could finally help
replace some medical facilities, such as the heart-rate monitoring machines and watches, in addition to other possible uses. For the latest study, researchers worked with a rope-maker to make the threads together into a material similar to ordinary thread that could be sewn(缝纫) into athletic clothes. The resulting “smart”
shirt provides “soft, wearable, dry sensors for continuous” heart-rate monitoring, the study states. With some improvement, the clothes with these carbon nanotube threads could be able to track other human body life signs, according to the researchers.
The “smart” shirts aren’t entirely without wires (电线), however. One example shows the nanotube in
the shirt feeding testing results to wires on the bottom that transmit the information through Bluetooth technology to a computer.
“The threadlike material —thin enough to run through a sewing machine —is not only soft and
comfortable to the touch, but also so strong that you can build a power line out of it,” said Dewy, a member of the research team. “Nothing else behaves like this promising material.”
What is the new material expected to do
Make a new style of sportswear.
Provide measurement for heartbeats.
Help determine the type of an illness.
Take the place of traditional clothes.
What does the underlined word “transmit” mean in paragraph 4
Add. B. Connect. C. Send. D. Track.
What can we learn about the new material
It has a bright future of development.
It has gained a large sales market.
It’ll improve the function of the heart.
It’ll cause a waste of resources.
What is the best title for the text
A.Scientists Are Studying Human Body Life Signs
Advanced Medical Facilities Are Put into Wide Use
Smart Wearables Are Well Received Among Athletes
Carbon Nanotube Threads Are Created to Test Heart Rate

I had to take two tests today - math in the morning and physics in the afternoon. As I waited outside
the exam room, I was feeling upset. I noticed Anna looking back at me but quickly looking away. I couldn't help but feel that she was feeling guilty. I was angry with her as she was good at all subjects but didn't keep
her promise to help me review for the math exam, which was my poorest subject. Despite trying to reach
out to her many times, she ignored all my calls and messages. I even went to her house but no one answered the door. I was left wondering what had happened. Finally, Mr. Black arrived and let us all into the exam room.
During the middle of the test, I looked up and was surprised to see Anna sitting in front of me. She had
her phone on her lap under the desk, and she was reading from it. This sight left me shocked and speechless. I wondered if this was her secret to always getting such good grades. I felt lost and unsure of what to do in this situation.
After finishing my math exam, I searched for Anna but she was nowhere to be found. Trying to study
at the book bar, I found myself not focus on my study I felt puzzled about how to deal with concerns about
Anna. On one hand, she is my friend and I want to trust her. On the other hand, what if she is actually doing something wrong It was then that my teacher Mr. Black walked by, sharing all of my worries with him.
During the afternoon physics exam, I sat behind Anna, feeling uneasy. Mr. Black had told me to keep
an eye on her and nod if I saw her using her phone. Despite my faith in Anna, I was anxious. I prayed silently that Anna wouldn't look at her phone in the exam any longer.

However, I found that Anna pulled her phone out again. Though feeling uneasy and restless, I looked at Mr. Black and nodded. With her eyes glued to the phone, it wasn’t until the teacher patted on her back that Anna noticed Mr. Black. Immediately, Anna was asked to leave. Anna rushed out of the class, crying all the way. Instead of feeling relaxed, I had ants in my pants. I felt guilty for telling Mr. Black about it, which had resulted in Anna’s not finishing her exam.
Suddenly, I became aware of the sound of footsteps coming from behind me. I turned to find it was Anna who had just come out of the teachers’ office. Feeling embarrassed, I wanted to run away. Nevertheless, Anna stopped me and said, “I’m sorry I haven’t kept my promise to help you review, but my father has been badly ill for two weeks. Today he had a significant operation. I was so worried about him that I kept on reading the texts on the phone sent by my mother to get the latest news about him, so Mr. Black forgave me. Can you forgive me ” “Of course! Let’s go to the hospital to see your father.” I couldn’t wait to reply.
