Developing Children’s Persistence (毅力)
One of the most important lessons a child can learn is not to give up when faced with a challenging situation, but instead to continue and overcome it.
Invention education
As the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects continues to grow due to the world’s increasing complexity (复杂性), invention education has become a popular way for children to explore these fields in pleasant ways.
At Camp Invention, there are no “right” or “wrong” ways to complete each day’s set of challenges and activities. Those who take part in it are able to seek solutions that naturally interest them. For example, campers learn how to change their cars to travel across the land, and create basic theory that could help them move through the air and even underwater by using the same method shared by some of the world’s most well-known inventors!
The Innovation (创新) Mindset
Working with our national innovators whose discoveries continue to improve the lives of people everywhere, we have recognized nine basic skills that can benefit children throughout their lives. We call this the Innovation Mindset, and it influences the development of all our education programmes.
Persistence is a very important part of the Innovation Mindset because it teaches children to recover from setbacks and overcome difficulties to reach their goals. Because our programmes develop determination through a “create, test and retest” way of learning, students build the strength and confidence to take on any challenges that stand in their way.

Seyton Thomas is a college student with a heart of giving. She has experienced challenges in her life that sculpted her drive to light a spark in young children from all backgrounds to develop leadership, perseverance, compassion and self-love. She says, “Service is what saved me, and I hope that this is a message that I can spread to the youth across the world.”
During the pandemic, Seyton Thomas organized a diverse group of young people to help a local crisis center. The Community Crisis Center in Miami, Oklahoma, is a home that gives shelter and other services to women and children who are suffering from domestic(家庭的) abuse. The crisis center depends on volunteers to help the women and children receive encouragement and a break from stress, but the pandemic made volunteer interaction difficult.
Seyton got the idea from the crisis center director of painting encouraging messages on stones and hiding them in the lawn of the crisis center for the children to find. Seyton pulled together other students from the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and her college soccer team. Together the young people collected stones, painted kind messages and filled two boxes full of fun and colorful stones. Then they gave them to the crisis center to hide. The children at the crisis center were delighted to find and read these messages. They thought highly of the experience as well as the words coming from community members who took time to make them realize they were valued.
Seyton reflects with the group of volunteers that the project is a great way to bring people together positively in the community to do something for the good of others. They talk about how serving others can make a difference to someone’s life. It seems that the deed is as small as a stone, but the impact can be as large as a mountain.
24. Whom does the Community Crisis Center mainly help
A. Poor families. B. Homeless orphans.
C. Victims of family violence. D. Pandemic disease sufferers.
25. How did Seyton Thomas help the crisis center
A. By raising a fund for all kids in the center.
B. By spreading useful news about the pandemic.
C. By encouraging her soccer team members to donate.
D. By presenting inspiring messages to children in the center.
26. What kind of person is Seyton Thomas
A. Curious and optimistic. B. Kind-hearted and caring.
C. Serious and modest. D. Creative and educated.
27. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Small stones make a big difference B. Volunteer work has great benefits
C. Find hope during difficult times D. Giving is better than receiving

Recently, I accidentally found a set of Hanfu. l only wore once from the bottom of the cupboard. I remember buying them simply to match the ancient-style hair accessories (配饰) a friend gave me. It occurred to me that 1 had been trapped in the “birdcage effect”.
“Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more things to match it. Weeks ago, I was in the company of friends engaged in shopping. One said that she wanted to buy a good writing pen to match the delicate notebook that her sister gave her, so that she would fall in love with taking notes on reading, and thus love reading, not just reading. I joked that she must have fallen for the “birdcage effect”. But the friend said with a smile: “Why not use the ‘birdcage effect’ instead ”
For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向). However, this can’t help but remind me of middle school, and I seem to have used the “birdcage effect”. Passing by a bookstore one day, I purchased a magazine and saw the call for contributions published in the magazine, so I started writing with eager hands, and then I fell in love with writing.
After shopping with my friends that time, I began to proceed to use the “birdcage effect”. I bought a small fresh tablecloth to decorate my desk, and a beautiful notebook to record my inspiration. When everything was ready, I started writing again.
But how can we get rid of the “birdcage effect” in many things, and even use the “birdcage effect” in the opposite way Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can distinguish them. If it is not in line with the actual situation, it is a “negative birdcage”, then we must learn to stop losses in time and maintain a heart of abandonment and separation. If it is a “positive birdcage” that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and motivate ourselves to move towards our goals. At this time, you will find that the “birdcage effect” is actually not so terrible!
28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The application of the “birdcage effect” in life.
B. The necessity of using the “birdcage effect” in life.
C. The turning point of the author’s idea on the “birdcage effect”.
D. The author’s conflict with her friend over the “birdcage effect”.
29. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning her middle school experience
A. To recall her delightful days at school.
B. To explain the reason for her love with writing.
C. To confirm the positive of the “birdcage effect”.
D. To prove her knowledge of the “birdcage effect”.
30. How can we make use of the “birdcage effect” positively
A. By realizing this effect has two sides.
B. By promoting our personal consumption.
C. By recognizing this effect is not so terrible.
D. By guiding our acts to go with reasonable goals.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Getting Rid of the Birdcage Effect Confidently
B. Motivating Ourselves to Move Towards Our Goals
C. The Birdcage Effect: Influence on Consumer Behavior
D. The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement (实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Dear fellows,
It is my pleasure and privilege to be here and present my thoughts on how to be responsible. It is universally acknowledged that responsibility is a key factor contributing to our success, without which our life will be like a ship without an anchor, at the mercy of the sea.
The first and foremost step to develop a sense of responsibility is to be aware of the significance of responsibility, because our attitude determines our altitude. Moreover, don’t avoid facing the consequences of our mistakes and learn from them to better ourselves. This will greatly help us build an increasingly better sense of responsibility. Last but not least, manage our own business and never shrink from our duty, stand on the solid ground and strive to make steady progress towards our goals.
Minor as assuming responsibility may sound, it is the foundation of our existence and therefore helps us better practice core socialist values. Thanks for your attention.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly,a boy fell off the back of the bus.He hit the road face down and rolled over.He lay motionless in the middle of the road as the bus drove away quickly. The cars directly behind the bus braked to avoid the boy,but none stopped.I knew that if the boy was bleeding into his brain,he could die soon.I stopped my car. I lifted his unconscious body into my car with the help of some passersby and raced back to the hospital.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, when I went to see the boy,all his family got up,with grateful smiles on their faces. The mother held my hands and started weeping."Son,you are an angel,"she repeated over and over again. After comforting her,I went over to the boy.He managed to smile and squeeze my hand.No words were spoken between us-none was needed.I spent the rest of the day in a state of excitement, the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced.Driving home that evening,I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.My career path became crystal clear at that moment.
1.W: It’s a beautiful day. We should go for a walk in the woods. I bet a lot of people will be having picnics there today.
M: There will be too many people there. A drive to the seaside would be better.
W: Where have you been I have been waiting here for ages.
M: I got out of bed early and set off on time but then the bus got stuck in traffic.
W: Sounds like you’re not to blame.
M: I need a new plug for the TV. My TV is old but I like it and it still works well.
W: I think you should throw it away and buy another, but it is up to you.
M: This place is a bit expensive, isn’t it
W: I know. Look at the price of the wine. It only costs a quarter as much at the supermarket.
M: Never mind. It’s our anniversary. Order whatever you want. I think I’ll have the steak.
M: Maybe I should set off for the airport now. John’s plane will arrive soon. He asked me to collect him in the car.
W: You have plenty of time. It’s only 3:00 p.m. You have two hours.
6-7. M: Oh, what a surprise to see you! Is there a problem
W: Yes, I think there is. I have been trying to call you all morning but I couldn’t get an answer.
M: That’s strange. Let me check my phone. I hope it isn’t broken.
W: There is an important meeting at work this afternoon. I wanted to let you know about it.
M: Ah, when I saw you at the door, I thought someone might be ill or have had an accident.
W: No, nothing like that. I just couldn’t get you on the phone. Is it switched on
M: I’ll have a look. Now I remember — I put it in my coat pocket and my coat is in the car! No wonder I couldn’t hear you calling.

M: What is the kitchen like
W: It’s quite large, and there’s a large living room as well, with a bathroom on each floor.
M: The price is quite high.
W: Well, that is the price the owners have asked — but you may be able to do a deal with them. The best thing for you to do is go and look at the house and talk to the owners.
M: Can I go this afternoon
W: Maybe that’s too soon. Would tomorrow morning be OK, say 10:00 a.m.
M: Yes, that would be fine.
10-12. M: Do you usually add that much sugar to your coffee
W: Well, you know tea is my favorite, though I am trying to like the taste of coffee. I find it is too bitter.
M: When I started drinking coffee, I added lots of milk and sugar. As I got older, I cut out milk entirely. Now I don’t even add sugar. I just drink it black.
W: Black coffee No, thank you. However, coffee ice cream, I would gladly try that.
M: Sure, have you tried chocolate ice cream mixed in with coffee It’s heavenly. Even if you don’t like coffee that much, I bet you will like that.
W: I’ll try it if you’re buying. And I will treat you to green tea ice cream if you want to have a try.
M: Deal, let’s have a tea time dessert party. Invite a few of your friends, and I will invite some of mine. We will see who has the best taste.
W: Well, that doesn’t sound sweet.
13-16. W: It’s dad’s 50th birthday on Saturday. It’s a big day for him, so perhaps we should do something special.
M: You mean a party
W: I thought about that, but maybe that would be hard to organize during the exam time.
M: That’s true. I do have three tests next week. Maybe we could take him to the cinema.
W: I don’t think that would be special enough.
M: We could go for a meal to his favorite restaurant — all the family.
W: That’s the best idea. I think he’d like that — you, your sister, dad and me. It would be nice.
M: I’ll call Jane and tell her not to make other arrangements.
W: Where is she
M: Her friend Alice called and they went over to Judy’s house.
W: That girl spends more time there than she does with us.
M: Well, we’ll be together as a family on Saturday.

M: I don’t think it will be a problem. It’s only Monday. They shouldn’t be booked up yet. Give them a call.
W: I’ll do that right away. Then this afternoon I will go to town and buy dad a present.
M: Get him a birthday cake as well.
W: No, I think I’ll make one myself. It feels nicer when someone has made an effort.
17-20. M: Hello everyone and welcome to the garden seminar. We all know that plants grow well in warm and sunny places, but we aren’t all lucky enough to live somewhere like that. Bill and Sally Jones live in a high, windy area — not ideal for gardening — but they are also champion vegetable growers. How do they do it Well, we all know that vegetables need plenty of water — not just a few drops or a few pints, but gallons of it. It rains a lot where the Jones family live, so they have a good water supply. It’s also very open, so they get enough sunlight. The real enemy is the wind. They tried different ways of protecting the plants — planting trees for shelter and building fences — but what they use now for the more delicate plants are glass houses. With several of these they are able to grow plants which would not normally survive in their location. By adapting to the conditions in which they live, Bill and Sally have developed a winning way with their crops. And their experience can serve as a lesson for other growers who experience similar difficulties.
A篇:21-23 DBA
根据Invention education部分“At Camp Invention, there are no “right” or “wrong” ways to complete each day’s set of challenges and activities. Those who take part in it are able to seek solutions that naturally interest them. For example, campers learn how to change their cars to travel across the land, and create basic theory that could help them move through the air and even underwater by using the same method shared by some of the world’s most well-known inventors! (在发明营,没有“正确”或“错误”的方式来完成每天的挑战和活动。那些参与其中的人能够寻求他们自然感兴趣的解决方案。例如,露营者学习如何更换汽车穿越陆地,并通过使用世界上一些最著名的发明家共享的相同方法,创造出可以帮助他们在空中甚至水下移动的基本理论!)”可知,在发明营,参与者们可以用他们感兴趣的有创造力的方法来解决问题。故选D。
【22题详解】细节理解题。根据The Innovation (创新) Mindset部分“Persistence is a very important part of the Innovation Mindset because it teaches children to recover from setbacks and overcome difficulties to reach their goals. (坚持是创新思维的一个非常重要的组成部分,因为它教会孩子从挫折中恢复过来,克服困难来实现他们的目标)”可知,在创新思维,孩子们可以学会勇敢地面对挑战。故选B。
【23题详解】推理判断题。根据最后一段“To learn more about the latest trends in STEM education, click here or visit our blog. (要了解更多关于STEM教育的最新趋势,请单击此处或访问我们的博客)”可推知,这篇文章可能来自于一个网站。故选A。
根据第二段“The Community Crisis Center in Miami, Oklahoma, is a home that gives shelter and other services to women and children who are suffering from domestic abuse.(俄克拉何马州迈阿密的社区危机处理中心为遭受家庭虐待的妇女和儿童提供住所和其他服务)”可知,社区危机处理中心主要帮助家庭暴力的受害者。
根据第三段“Seyton got the idea from the crisis center director of painting encouraging messages on stones and hiding them in the lawn of the crisis center for the children to find.(Seyton从危机处理中心主任那里得到了一个主意,就是在石头上画上鼓励性的信息,然后把它们藏在危机处理中心的草坪上,让孩子们找到)”可知,Seyton是通过向危机处理中心的孩子们展示石头上的鼓励性的信息来提供帮助的。
根据第一段“Seyton Thomas is a college student with a heart of giving.(Seyton Thomas是一个有奉献之心的大学生)”以及第二段“During the pandemic, Seyton Thomas organized a diverse group of young people to help a local crisis center.(在大流行病期间,Seyton Thomas组织了一个多元化的年轻人团体,来帮助当地的一个危机处理中心)”可知,Seyton Thomas有奉献之心,并为当地的危机处理中心提供帮助,所以Seyton Thomas是心地善良且乐于助人的。
根据第三段“Seyton got the idea from the crisis center director of painting encouraging messages on stones and hiding them in the lawn of the crisis center for the children to find.(Seyton从危机处理中心主任那里得到了一个主意,就是在石头上画上鼓励性的信息,然后把它们藏在危机处理中心的草坪上,让孩子们找到)”以及最后一段“It seems that the deed is as small as a stone, but the impact can be as large as a mountain.(这件事情看起来像石头一样小,但影响却可能像大山一样大)”可知,本文主要讲述了Seyton Thomas使用石头为危机处理中心的孩子们提供鼓励性的信息,产生了有益的影响,所以“小石子有大影响”可以作为文章标题。故选A项。
第二段首句““Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more things to match it. But the friend said with a smile: “Why not use the ‘birdcage effect’ instead ”(“鸟笼效应”是指当你有一天得到一件物品时,你会准备更多的东西来搭配它。几周前,我和朋友一起去购物。有的说,她想买一支好的写字笔,搭配姐姐送给她的精致笔记本,让她爱上记读书笔记,从而爱上读书,而不仅仅是读书。我开玩笑说她一定是受了“鸟笼效应”的影响。但朋友笑道:“为什么不用‘鸟笼效应’来代替呢?”)”可知,朋友告诉作者可以反向使用“鸟笼效应”,作者第一次听说“鸟笼效应”可以反向使用,由此可知,第二段主要讲述了作者对“鸟笼效应”的看法有了改变,第三段第一句话“For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向). (第一次听说“鸟笼效应”可以反向使用)”也是提示,说明作者对“鸟笼效应”的看法发生了改变,故选C。
【29题详解】推理判断题。根据第三段中“However, this can’t help but remind me of middle school, and I seem to have used the “birdcage effect”. Passing by a bookstore one day, I purchased a magazine and saw the call for contributions published in the magazine, so I started writing with eager hands, and then I fell in love with writing.(不过,这不禁让我想起了中学时代,我似乎运用了“鸟笼效应”。有一天路过一家书店,我买了一本杂志,看到杂志上刊登的征稿启事,我就开始急切地开始写作,从此我就爱上了写作)”可知,作者运用了“鸟笼效应”的结果是自己爱上了写作,这是“鸟笼效应”给作者带来的积极影响,由此可推知,作者提到她的中学经历的是为了证实“鸟笼效应”的积极作用。故选C。
【30题详解】细节理解题。根据最后一段中“If it is a “positive birdcage” that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and motivate ourselves to move towards our goals. (如果是一个激励我们向上发展的“积极的鸟笼”,我们可以明确自己的目标,适当的购物或装饰,激励自己朝着目标前进。)”可知,我们可以通过指导我们的行为去实现合理的目标以此来积极利用“鸟笼效应”,故选D。
【31题详解】主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中““Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more things to match it. (“鸟笼效应”是指当你有一天得到一件物品时,你会准备更多的东西来搭配它。)”,第三段中“For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向). (第一次听说“鸟笼效应”可以反向使用)”和最后一段“But how can we get rid of the “birdcage effect” in many things, and even use the “birdcage effect” in the opposite way Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can distinguish them. At this time, you will find that the “birdcage effect” is actually not so terrible!(但如何才能在很多事情上摆脱“鸟笼效应”,甚至反过来利用“鸟笼效应”呢?
【32题详解】根据上文“But hurdles are bound to come up on the way to success, discouraging you from your goal.”(但是,在通往成功的道路上必然会遇到障碍,阻碍你实现目标。)以及下文“Here are some ways that may help you to be diligent and write your own success story.”(这里有一些方法可以帮助你变得勤奋,让你书写自己的成功故事。) D. In fact, only those who are diligent can overcome them.(事实上,只有那些勤奋的人才能克服它们。)
【33题详解】 根据上文“First of all, having a clear vision is essential to be diligent in life. If you are not clear about what you want to achieve in life, you will lose direction, motivation and enthusiasm in life.”(首先,在生活中,有一个清晰的愿景是勤奋必不可少的因素。 B项中的On the other hand与上文形成对比, if you are省略了clear about what you want to achieve in life。所以B. On the other hand, if you are, you will stay diligent.
【34题详解】根据下文“Proper planning enables us to turn most of the goals into reality without regrets in later part of life. Having a plan in advance, though, does not mean that you have to plan from start to finish. It means you should know in which direction you are heading.”(适当的计划能让我们把大部分的目标变成现实,在以后的生活中没有遗憾。 It is of the same importance to have a specific plan beforehand.(事先有一个具体的计划也是同样重要的。)
【35题详解】根据上文“Moreover, excuses are not going to keep you away from regrets in your later life. If you delay diligence because of your family responsibility, it simply means your goals are not in your priority list, which is why excuses are coming.”(此外,借口并不能让你在以后的生活中远离遗憾。 G. So follow your dreams with no excuse to live a happy and successful life.(所以,追随你的梦想吧,不要找借口,去过幸福成功的生活。)
【36题详解】根据下文“Otherwise, you might unconsciously develop the habit of not being serious about bigger tasks as well.”(否则,你可能会无意识地养成不认真对待大任务的习惯。) C. You need to practice diligence even for the smallest task.(你需要练习勤奋,即使是最小的任务。)
