If you wanted to make a Disney-style animation (动画) of, say, Reggie, a spirited rabbit, planning
to save his forest, you'd have a lead animator draw the extremes of the action: Reggie looking
intensely focused, and then proudly announcing, “There’s a new hero in the forest!” Then you’d bring
in an in-betweener, that is, the animator who draws all the comprehensive frames that bridge the
major actions.
In-betweeners don’t get the glory, but without them cartoons would hop from one emotional peak
to another, missing connective grace. Burny Mattinson (1935-2023) started his career at the Walt
Disney Company in the mailroom, and, even though he had no formal training in animation, he
started in-betweening just six months later.
His first big assignment was to in-between the wagging (摇摆) of a dog’s tail. Disney animation
was famous for its silky elegance, owing in no small part to the skill of its in-betweeners, and, thanks
to Mattinson, the tail practically glided from side to side.
Mattinson had wanted to be an animator ever since his mother had taken him to see “Pinocchio”
at a theatre when he was six. In a brave move, Mattinson showed up at the Disney Studios gate with
his portfolio (作品) as soon as he finished high school. The magical part of this story is that, instead
of shooing (赶走) him away, the security guard liked his drawings and called the head of personnel to
take a look.
Thus, Mattinson became a messenger at Disney, beginning a career that would eventually make
him the employee with the longest service at the company. He had joined the company at a golden
moment. Listing the films that he worked on is a little like listing the entire output of the Walt Disney
Company over the past six decades: “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Lion King”, and on and on.
Mattinson was, perhaps, one of the last of an almost extinct people—the happy company man,
the lifer. He never had an employer besides Disney. When asked what Mattinson enjoyed doing
outside of his life at Disney, his son said, “He just loved his work.”
24. What role do in-betweeners play in animation production
A. Design the storyline. B. Draw the background.
C. Invent extreme actions. D. Generate natural actions.
25. Which of the following can best describe Mattinson’s path to Disney
A. Unconventional. B. Typical. C. Illegal. D. Accidental.
26. What makes Mattinson exceptional in Disney’s history
A. His lifelong dedication to Disney.
B. His detailed work as an in-betweener.
C. His passion for animation beyond work.
D. His almost extinct painting techniques.
27. What is the text
A. A diary entry. B. A biographical sketch.
C. A news report. D. A critical review.

For some people, October is Octobear. On October 5, Katmai National Park and Preserve in
southern Alaska kicked off Fat Bear Week, when fans compare before and after photos of bears to
vote for the one they think has gained the most weight before they bed down for the long freezing
winter. Bear 747, also known as “Bear Force One”, took the first-place spot with 68,105 votes. It
weighed around 1,400 pounds.
Fat Bear Week started in 2014. At first it was just Fat Bear Tuesday. Mike Fitz, a former park
keeper at Katmai, noticed that live webcams (网络摄像机 ) showing the bears generated a lot of
online comments, so he let people vote for their favorite fat bear on the Internet. The one-day event
attracted 1,700 votes. In 2015, it was extended to a week. Last year, nearly 800,000 people got
involved, turning it into a global campaign.
The contest serves two main purposes. First, some of America’s national parks are in remote and
undeveloped areas, which are difficult or costly to reach. Fat Bear Week brings Alaska’s wilderness
to fans’ computer screens.“It’s not limited to the fortunate few who can go to the river anymore, ”Fitz
said.
Second, Fat Bear Week brings attention to the bears and the ecosystems they live in. The 2,200
bears of Katmai are strong for feeding on some of the healthiest salmon (三文鱼) in the world, said
Sara Wolman, a former park keeper. Salmon in the Pacific Northwest are suffering from overfishing,
dam construction and warming rivers due to climate change. Luckily, Brooks River, which Katmai’s
bears like to fish in, has been free from these threats so far.
Fat Bear Week has spread like viruses. Fans and creators say it’s because it shows a conservation
success story. For one week, people don’t have to focus on climate change or habitat loss. “Maybe
things aren’t super great all the time in the world,” said Felicia Jimenez, who is a current Katmai
keeper. “But there are some really fat bears in Alaska.”
28. Why did Bear 747 become the winner of Fat Bear Week in southern Alaska
A. It gained the most pounds. B. It was the heaviest.
C. It presented the best photos. D. It was the most famous.
29. What is the purpose of paragraph 2
A. To show the popularity of fat bears. B. To review the history of the event.
C. To praise Mike Fitz for his work. D. To explain the role of live webcams.
30. What can we learn about Katmai’s bears
A. They bring tourists to the park. B. They face a population decline.
C. They remain difficult to be seen. D. They have a stable food source.
31. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Fat Bear Week: Conservation Is Joyful B. Brown Bears: Winter Survival Is Crucial
C. Bear 747: A Fat Yet Healthy Champion D. Katmai’s Bears: A Special Beauty Contest

As the planet gets hotter, the need for cool living environments is becoming more urgent. But
air conditioning is not always recommended for use since units (机组) produce massive greenhouse
gases and use lots of energy. Now, researchers have found in a new study an inexpensive, sustainable
choice to replace mechanical cooling with refrigerants (制冷剂) in hot and dry climates, and a way
to mitigate the dangers of heat waves during electricity blackouts (停电).
The researchers set out to answer how to achieve a new benchmark (基准) for passive cooling
inside naturally conditioned buildings in hot climates such as Southern California. They examined
the use of roof materials that radiate (辐射) heat into the cold universe, even under direct sunlight,
and how to connect them with temperature-driven air exchanges (that is, air can enter buildings and
circulate freely). These cool radiator materials and coatings (涂层 ) are often used to stop roofs
overheating. Researchers have also used them to improve heat rejection from coolers. But there is
untapped potential for mixing them with architectural design more fully, so they can not only reject
indoor heat in a passive way, but also drive regular and healthy air changes.
“We found we could keep air temperatures several degrees below the ordinary temperature, and
several degrees more below the reference ‘gold standard’ for passive cooling,” said Remy Fortin,
lead author and PhD candidate at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture. “We did this without
abandoning a healthy airing.” This was never a piece of cake, considering air exchanges are a source
of heat when the aim is to keep a room cooler than the outside.
The researchers hope the findings will be used to positively impact communities suffering from
dangerous climate heating and heat. “We hope that materials scientists, architects, and engineers will
be interested in these results, and that our work will inspire more thorough thinking about how to
connect breakthroughs in radiative cooling materials with simple but effective architectural solutions,”
said Salmaan Craig, main investigator for the project and assistant professor at the Peter Guo-hua Fu
School of Architecture.
32. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Monitor. B. Relieve. C. Control. D. Predict.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The effects of airing.
B. The findings of the study.
C. The process of the research.
D. The function of cool radiators.
34. What challenge did the researchers face according to Remy Fortin
A. Guaranteeing the room a good airing.
B. Reaching the reference gold standard.
C. Keeping the house cool without power.
D. Combining passive cooling with air exchange.
35. What do the researchers desire to do with their findings
A. Raise public awareness of cooling materials.
B. Appeal for stricter limits on greenhouse gases.
C. Improve humans’ living environments worldwide.
D. Strengthen materials science’s use in architecture.

Going on vacation every week might sound like the very unattainable dream. 36 . All you
need to do is get in the habit of treating your weekend like a vacation, suggests Cassie Mogilner
Holmes, a professor at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management. We asked experts to share their
favorite tips for adopting a vacation mindset at home.
Get creative about making time
37 . Some people have to bear weekend schedules packed with work. You could still
make the best of a Thursday evening, Holmes suggests. Or, spare an hour on Sunday morning for
chores, but protect the rest of the weekend as your vacation time.
38
Decision scientist Nika Kabiri recommends doing something totally new so you can disconnect
from the same old routines governing your life. Among her favorite ideas: Drive to a part of town
you’ve never been to before, go for a city walk, and grab lunch at the first cute café you see. Or take
a bike or boat tour of your city. 39 .
Don’t put extra pressure on yourself
Treating your weekend like a vacation doesn’t mean it needs to be a delicate affair. If your
“vacation” encounters a few unexpected affairs or lasts for only a few hours, don’t be annoyed.
40 .Don’t put pressure on yourself to have this “perfect vacation”. It’s meant to be fun. Plus,
there’s always another one just a few days away.
A. Act like a tourist
B. Go for a city walk
C. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing
D. Just ignore the work and continue to have fun
E. All the experiences make you feel the weekend vacation-like
