Merlin’s Kids
Merlin’s Kids is an organization that rescues and trains shelter dogs to become service animals for children with special needs for emotional support. Dogs can expand kids’ social comfort zone and dramatically improve their mental health. In the public’s eyes, these working dogs have proved that shelter animals are amazing.
Pets for Vets (老兵)
Animal trainer Clarissa Black created Pets for Vets in 2009 as a way to say “thank you” to our nation’s heroes. This organization recognizes that many vets return home with scars (伤疤), which make it difficult for them to live a normal life. Pets for Vets was founded to rescue and train shelter animals to provide therapy dogs for vets. The organization says that when the vet is matched with the right dog, both of their lives change for the better.
Paws With a Cause
This organization has been around since 1979 and it improves the independence and quality of life for people with disabilities. Paws With a Cause specializes in helping people with disabilities complete daily tasks and the dogs can open doors and pull a wheelchair. The organization’s founders Mike and Candye are very pleased with its development.
Can Do Canines
A dog from a local shelter helped start Can Do Canines in 1989. Named Annie, she assisted her owner for eight years. Annie was the first of over 500 rescued dogs specially trained as service dogs to assist people with hearing problems, diabetes (糖尿病) and autism. Songs that make our hearts happy can make them stronger too, US researchers reported on Tuesday.
They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels (血管) dilated in much the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications (药物治疗).
“We have a pretty impressive effect,” said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology (心脏病学) at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
“Blood vessel diameter (直径) improved,” he said. “The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise.” A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins (抑制素).
When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots (凝块) that cause heart attacks and strokes. “We are not saying to stop your statins or not to exercise but rather to add this to an overall program of heart health,” said Miller.
Miller’s team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music. They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them feel anxious while the researchers did ultrasound (超声波) tests designed to show blood vessel function.
Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26% on average when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they disliked—in most cases in this group heavy metal-blood vessels narrowed by 6%, Miller said.
Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to flow more smoothly. “I asked myself what other things make us feel good, besides calories from dark chocolate of course. Music came to mind. It makes me feel really good.” he said.
Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important as what pleases each individual.
( )24.The underlined word “dilate” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “______”.
A.widen B.move C.change D.increase
( )25.According to the passage, which of the following will NOT cause blood vessels to open up

( )26.It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A.blood clots are caused by heart attacks and strokes
B.music is better than chocolate for your health
C.different music has different effects on different people
D.a person’s overall health is more influenced by how much exercise he gets
( )27.What is the passage possibly taken from
A.A travel journal. B.A school textbook. C.A medical brochure. D.A local newspaper.

Sometimes you meet people in the most unexpected places who can change your life. When Michael Skinner, a student at the University of Notre Dame, called for an Uber after a formal event during Junior Parents Weekend, he had no idea that the driver would leave a lasting impact on him. As the engineering major made a friendly conversation with his driver, Doug Anderson, the New Jersey native asked him about his family.
That’s when Anderson began telling Skinner about his 11-year-old daughter Tori who he and his wife adopted when she was five. Tori was born with a condition that caused her to have only half a palm and one finger on her hands. Anderson explained to his empathetic (共情的) passenger that her hands made his daughter feel embarrassed and unhappy looking so different from her peers.
Wanting to help their child, he and his wife spoke to doctors from several hospitals about getting their daughter prosthetics (假肢)—only to hear that a child quickly outgrows the artificial limbs, making them even more expensive for the parents.
With the family welcoming two other children with special needs, the Andersons were extra careful to watch their spending. The circumstances led Anderson—who’s 58—to become an Uber driver to make some extra money that also allowed him to interact with all kinds of people. People like Skinner, who luckily enough, was able to help his family. If there is such a thing as fate, the pair’s meeting was a welcome chance encounter. Skinner works at e-Nable, an informal student engineering club that 3D-printed robotic hands and they needed a child to test their creation after enduring an ongoing lag in their projects. Tori was the perfect candidate.
After several back-and-forth meetings, Tori can write, throw a baseball, and perform many other acts once considered impossible thanks to her new hands. Although Anderson never took the driving job expecting an outcome as bright as this, the father feels thankful fate stepped in.
( )28.How did Skinner know of Tori’s condition
A.From a student engineering club.
B.From a conversation with Tori’s father.
C.From his professor who taught engineering.
D.From a meeting during Junior Parents Weekend.
( )29.Why does Anderson become an Uber driver
A.To kill time. B.To gain sympathy. C.To earn extra money. D.To befriend some doctors.
( )30.Which of the following can best describe the pair’s meeting
A.Coincidental. B.Interesting. C.Regular. D.Scheduled.
( )31.What does Anderson think of the test result of 3D-printed robotic hands on his daughter
A.Puzzled. B.Doubtful. C.Dissatisfied. D.Grateful.

The Forest Eye project aims to create the largest living forest feature in England by growing 5,000 alder, beech and maple trees into the shape of a child’s eye. The trees are being planted in Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire, with the help of local young people. The trees will form an eye 300 meters wide that will be visible from the sky in about six years, when they have grown.
The project hopes to focus on the importance of young people’s ideas for creating a health y natural environment. It was designed by a company called Sand in Your Eye and has been created by Forestry England, an organization that protects forests and woodlands.
Josephine Lavelle, director at Forestry England, says, “Having the gaze of a child growing in the heart of this beautiful and ever-changing forest is a powerful symbol of how we need to listen and respond to the needs and vision of future generations.”
The project also aims to highlight the important role that forests play in fighting climate change. As well as providing a home for wildlife, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and create oxygen that humans need to breathe. When the trees have grown, they will provide a place for lots of wild animals, like bats, birds and small mammals to live. The Forest Eye will also create a space for people to explore and connect with nature.
Jamie Wardley, artistic director at Sand in Your Eye, has plenty of experience creating pieces of “land art”. These are huge drawings and sculptures made from grass, ice and sand, including a 60-meter portrait of Swedish climate-change campaigner Greta Thunberg on a school field in Yorkshire. He says, “The trees are my paint.” “Our work is about prompting people to think deeply and respond emotionally to some of the biggest issues facing us, including the climate crisis.” Wardley also plans to develop the Forest Eye into an even bigger project. “It is our ambition to create the whole face of a young girl at the same scale, measuring 2,000 meters across. Those trees that are planted in the Forest Eye are the very beginning of this,” he says.
( )32.What can we know about the project
A.It is planting trees to form an eye. B.It is aimed at creating artworks.
C.It is proposed by the local youth. D.It is carried out in the largest forest.
( )33.What does the fourth paragraph mainly talk about

Moving into a new home in a new neighbourhood is an exciting experience. Of course, you want to make sure that you become an acceptable and valuable part of your neighbourhood. The easiest way to accomplish this is to make sure you conduct yourself as a good neighbour should. 36
Perhaps one of the most important things you can do as a good neighbour is to keep your property (房产) neat, clean, and in good repair. 37 By choosing to keep the outside of the home in great shape, you will help to improve the look and feel of the area.
Second, take the overall appearance of the neighbourhood seriously. When going for a walk, take a small garbage bag. 38 This small act will let your neighbours know that you care about the area.
39 If a neighbour is going to be out of town, offer to collect mail and newspapers. If a neighbour suffers from an illness, offer to do the grocery shopping. Let them know you are there to help in any way and respect the privacy of your neighbour.
40 By following the basic rules of respecting others, taking care of what belongs to you, and taking pride in the appearance of the neighbourhood in general, you will quickly become a good neighbour that everyone appreciates.
A.In general, keep an eye on their property while they are away.
B.A good neighbour is the one who likes to help out in small ways.
C.Being a good neighbour is more or less about considerate behavior.
D.Sometimes neighbours may go to the supermarket together to do shopping.
E.People tend to take pride in keeping everything in their street fresh and inviting.

Over the years, I’ve been guilty of hurriedly shutting the front door to many strangers when they came to my home knocking with the intention of selling things. I hated it when they tried their best to persuade me to buy the things they promoted. But earlier this year, around Easter time, a dear friend of mine, Linda, had an experience that changed my mind and attitude towards these “intruders”.
Last winter, Linda went through a very messy divorce and was very depressed. So she quit her job and left Los Angeles, where she encountered her ex-husband in college. She flew to Boston on the east coast of the US. Later, she settled in a new neighborhood in East Boston. However, shortly afterwards, the company where she worked went bankrupt (破产). Suffering a series of bitter blows. she fell ill, a severe case of flu. She had to stay at home for the whole week, feeling extremely bad and hopeless.
Early one morning, Linda lay in bed, feeling painful all over. Then all of a sudden, there was an upsetting knock on her front door. Struggling out of the bed, she dragged herself to the window. There, outside, she saw a young lady carefully holding some leaflets (传单) and a TV set model. She knew of a large TV set establishment nearby and assumed a message was about to be gently delivered. “This is the last thing I need today.” She muttered to herself and hesitantly opened the door.
Coughing bitterly, Linda stuck her head out. “Excuse me, madam…” the young lady said with a smile. “I’m sorry but I am not the slightest bit interested in any TV whatever.” Linda interrupted her impatiently. “As a matter of fact, I am feeling terribly awful.” “Is there anything I can do for you, madam ” the young lady asked with concern. “No thanks, just leave me alone.” Linda then shut the door in her face. The young lady politely turned and left in silence.

六、读后续写(满分25分)
One possible version:
A few hours later, another knock. Linda glanced out of the window and to her surprise, there at the door was the same lady, back again. Really annoyed this time, Linda opened the door but before she could speak, with a concerned look on her face, the young lady handed Linda a warm pot, saying, “I’m so sorry I disturbed you earlier. I thought you may like this homemade chicken soup. Hopefully it might make you feel a little better.” (74)
Linda was surprised by this lovely action. Being new to the area, she didn’t know any neighbors, so the gesture was all the more appreciated. She could only smile embarrassedly and sincerely thanked her. With that, the lady left. After she related this story to me, I thought about how touching this deed really was. Especially in today’s world where, sadly, kindness and thoughtfulness seen so rare. I also realized that thinking about others and showing kindness is the real meaning of love. (76)
