As a child, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.
Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never agree because the walls were so old that some stones were loose and falling. However, my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I want to climb the stone walls.” I said. “Heavens, no! You’ll hurt yourself!” The response was just as I’d expected. But before I left the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s loud voice. “Now hold on just a minute.” I heard him say. “Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
“Go,” he said to me, “and come and see me when you get back.” For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls —and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I’ll never forget what he said. “Fred,” he said, smiling, “you made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. “There’s only one person in this whole world like you,” the kids will hear me say, “and people can like you exactly as you are.”

Recently, research on how a new virtual (虚拟的) reality (VR) experience educated primary children about the fire disasters was done. It was developed by the University of South Australia, aiming to educate children to learn how to be safer in a fire.
Focusing on children aged 10-12 years old, the new VR experience presents a situation where children are tasked to look after a friend’s dog just before a fire event begins to spread. They participate in a series of problem-solving activities to help save and protect themselves and the dog.
The findings showed that more than 80 percent of children reported that they felt more confident to calmly assess the situation and make wise decisions to protect themselves from a fire. This isl especially important considering that 91 percent of participants originally lacked any knowledge of fires, and that 67 percent had said that they were too young to make safety decisions in a fire.
The researchers believed such immersive (沉浸式的) VR experiences had real potential (潜力) to attract and educate the young. “As children born in digital times, they are interested in such technology and they can experience events realistically yet within the safe environment.” said Delene Weber, one of the researchers. “Well-designed VR can provide a chance for children to apply newly-acquired knowledge, strengthen their learnt concepts, and enable immediate reaction—all incredibly valuable learning tools.”
Meanwhile because children have fewer life experiences, aren’t as physically strong, and are less likely to have learned much about fire safety, they’re often most at risk. Yet the ability for children to contribute to fire safety at their household should not be underestimated (低估).
“Children do not need to be passively attacked by disasters and with purpose-built virtual reality experiences such as these, we can help children understand the risks and realize they can help,” said Weber.
24. How does the new VR experience try to educate children
A. By introducing a virtual friend to them. B. By finding the causes of a fire event.
C. By letting them solve virtual problems. D. By guiding them to ask a dog for help.
25. What did the result of the research about VR experiences show
A. Many children found it hard to adapt to them.
B They helped children deal with fire postively.
C. They benefited children with knowledge of animals.
D. Most children had a misunderstanding about them.
26. What is Weber’s attitude towards the new VR experiences
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Disapproving. D. Supportive.
27. What can be the most suitable title for the text
A. VR experiences educate kids to survive a fire B. VR experiences make learning easier for kids
C. VR education appeals to the young generation D. VR technology makes no sense in fighting a fire.

I hesitated when my friend suggested that we join the school’s new Tai Chi club. I used to think that tai chi was for the elderly. However, the first class changed my previous understanding of tai chi. A year later, I can say that tai chi has had a huge impact on me.
The first few tai chi classes were fun and easy, and the moves with descriptive names really caught my imagination, like “white crane spreading its wings” and “golden rooster standing on one leg.” When I asked my coach where these interesting names came from, he told me about the history of tai chi. Zhang Sanfeng, a 13th-century Taoist, was said to have invented tai chi after drawing inspiration from a fight between a snake and a bird. However, nowadays people tend to believe that Chen Wangting, a 17th-century master of Chinese martial arts, developed tai chi based on martial arts skills.
After the first few basic tai chi lessons, I found myself bored and aching from doing the same slow moves over and over again. Fortunately, my coach taught me how to relax my muscles and focus on peace of mind during ever, day practice. With these requirements of tai chi in mind, I found to my satisfaction that my balance and flexibility slowly improved, that I was able to do more difficult moves, and that my love for tai chi returned stronger than ever.
Meanwhile, I started to explore the ancient Chinese culture behind tai chi. I discovered that tai chi is deeply rooted in the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang, which are believed to form the the unity of opposite. Neither can exist independent of the other. The practice of tai chi aims to keep the balance of yin and yang in the body through opposite movements: forwards and backwards, up and down, left and right, breathing in and breathing out. Ultimately, tai chi brings about a state of physical balance and mental peace.
The experience of a year of tai chi has affected my everyday life positively. I sleep more soundly at night, and feel more energetic during the day. I feel happier and more confident. Tai chi has taught me to relax my mind, enabling me to stay calm in stressful situations. I am sure I will continue to practise tai chi and enjoy the benefits it has brought me.
28. Why did the author join the Tai Chi Club
A. Because of his friend’s advice. B. Because of his interest in it.
C. Because of the school’s request. D. Because of his parents’ suggestion.
29. Which of the following words can describe the moves of tai chi
A. Quick and beautiful. B. Quick and free.
C. Slow and beautiful. D. Slow and boring.
30. What is the Chinese culture behind tai chi
A. Tai chi is influenced by Laozi’s philosophy of water.
B. Tai chi can have a positive effect in people’s lives.
C. You can find the origin of tai chi in the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang.
D. Tai chi can make people feel energetic and confident.
31. What does the underlined word mean
A. Finally B. Sometimes C. Firstly D. Constantly

Jace Tunnell, the founder of Nurdle I troll and Reserve Director at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, is listening to the same question often.
“I hear every day, somebody says, ‘What is a nurdle ’” he said.
Tunnell explained nurdles are tiny balls of plastic that are typically used to make almost every plastic item we use, so they’re everywhere! He said nurdles are usually spilled (溢出) during transport from cargo ships or railroad cars. “These things would be out here for hundreds of years if we’re not picking them up,” Tunnell said while on a recent Nurdle Patrol cleanup along Galveston Bay.
Since 2018, Nurdle Patrol has grown to thousands of volunteers worldwide. Many people -volunteer with Nurdle Patrol and work for the Galveston Bay Foundation. Nurdle Patrol groups upload their findings to the nonprofit’s website map. It’s marked in colors to show where the highest concentration of nurdles is found.
“They look natural, and birds think that they’re food,” Tunnell said, “Birds, fish, sea turtles and other sea animals can eat nurdles and finally die from hunger because of a false sensation of fullness and lack of nutrition.”
I ended up finding 123 nurdles in 10 minutes. That’s high concentration,” Tunnell said about a recent cleanup. “I plan to take those to an elected official and say, ‘Look, these are what I found on our beaches here. We need to do something about this.’ So, it kind of puts in motion change that can happen.”
Nurdle Patrol has sent out hundreds of kits (工具包) globally, many to schools and volunteer organizations, with information about gathering nurdles and reporting the findings safely. Anyone can request a kit through their website.
32. What do we know about the nurdle

34. What does Tunnell want to do
A. Draw a map of nurdles’ concentration. B. Call the government’s attention to nurdles.

Many teenagers may have a very confusing time filled with worries in high school. Here are some tips which can help you succeed in the years.

Read as much as you can. Pick up a book on anything that increases your knowledge. Stop spending hours in watching your favorite TV shows. 38 You’ll notice in a few days how you begin to see things in a different way.

Dear Mike,
I’m sorry to learn that you have been suffering from headaches, which prevent you from performing well in your work. Worse still, you haven’t got better after taking medicine.
From my perspective, Chinese medicine producing fewer side effects is superior to western medicine to some extent. In addition, Chinese medicine is less expensive, so you don’t need to worry about your budget. I believe the treatment appeals greatly to you.
I hope you will recover soon. If there is anything you need me to do, don’t hesitate to ask. Yours, Li Hua
读后续写
Just then, the phone rang.
Mrs.Timmons’ dog had gotten out again. She asked Brian if he could find Fifi for her. Brian said he would be happy to help Mrs. Timmons. She was getting so old. She could not run after feisty Fifi any more. Brian immediately started looking for Fifi. He spotted her behind a tree in the Kirbys’ yard.
After chasing Fifi through three different yards, Brian finally got Mrs.Timmons’ dog.He returned her to Mrs. Timmons. Mrs. Timmons was so thankful that she handed Brian two dollars. Brian thanked Mrs. Timmons. He told her that she did not have to pay him. Then Brian had an idea. Now he knew what he could do to earn money. He would set up a pet service! He could take care of people’s pets when they were gone. He figured there were at least 12 dogs he could look after, a few cats, and even some dish. Brian would have that bike in no time.
