A Firefighting Drill
Yesterday, a firefighting drill was conducted in our school with all teachers and students involved to arouse our awareness of fire prevention techniques.
The drill started with an alarm, hearing which students quickly evacuated the classrooms orderly under the guidance of the teachers to the appointed place. The fire escape routes were clearly marked, and fire extinguishers were readily available throughout the school. So it was five minutes later that all the building were emptied and students and teachers gathered on the playground. Our principal announced the drill was performed better than scheduled.
Both teachers and students appreciated the opportunity to learn about fire safety. Many expressed their gratitude for the school’s initiative in organizing such a drill, as it increased their confidence and awareness in dealing with potential fire hazards.

At the sight of Mr. Willow, Jack and Frey froze in shock. “Ugh… sure, Mr. Willow,” said Jack, “We’ll finish up and be right in.” Mr. Willow’s kind words reminded Jack of the couple’s efforts to pay for the work he did. A surge of guilt swept over him, “How could I have that evil thought!” So the moment Mr. Willow went back to his house, Jack put the money back. The boys finished cleaning and went to the house. They had big slices of chocolate cake and two glasses of milk each.
When they were about to leave, Mr. Willow handed Jack a brand new bat and glove. “This is for you. Your mom said this is something you’d like. We try to find little ways to show our appreciation for what you have done for us.” Seeing the bat and glove, Jack felt a warm blush rise to his cheeks. “Th… thanks so much. I love them!” Outside, Frey put his hand on Jack’s shoulder, “See, you not only have a clear conscience, but the bat and glove you want in Sports Stores.”

M: As you are learning Chinese social problems now, I would like to share the result of a recent survey with you.
The researchers asked 20,000 young people in 20 countries, including China, the US and the UK, how they think and feel about the world. They found that 53 percent of those questioned in China think the world is becoming a better place. That’s the highest percentage among the countries in the survey, followed by India with 49 percent.
When asked why they felt hopeful for the future, 93 percent of those Chinese youth said it was because advances of technology like medicine, new energy and the Internet might make life in the future easier.
However, Chinese young people seem to worry about something else. As much as 82 percent of them worry about climate change. That’s a lot more than the number of people who care about the environmental problems in other countries. We can see that Chinese young people are quite different from their previous generations. I hope each of you can write a report on this problem after class.江阴市三校联考2023-2024学年高二下学期4月期中考试

A small accident led to profound changes in the life of Yang Li, an artisan (手艺人), who is from the Miao ethnic group. In 201l, Yang, from Tongren city in Guizhou province, created leaf vein (脉络) embroidery (刺绣) three months after a leaf cut her hand.
The work is a perfect combination of traditional embroidery patterns and the natural textures (纹理) of the leaves. It has a unique aesthetic appeal of traditional embroidery matched with the characteristics of contemporary craftsmanship.
As a native Miao woman with an inborn love of embroidery, Yang opened a folk culture products shop with her sister in 2011. “People are becoming less familiar with traditional handicrafts, and I want to contribute all I can to change this situation,” Yang says. At first, the small shop did not earn a significant income as there were many similar products on the market. She gradually realized that it was important to establish her own brand and launch products with distinct features.
That’s when she was inspired by the cut. In July 2011, Yang accidentally cut her hand on a thorny leaf when she was hiking in Fanjing Mountain. A bold idea came into her head: “There are leaf-vein bookmarks and leaf-vein paintings. Why has nobody created leaf-vein embroider yet ”
Obviously, the reason behind this is that embroidering on leaves requires delicate skills that few possess. The biggest technical challenge Yang faced was improving the flexibility of the leaves and making them as soft as cloth. On Oct 16, a day she will never forget, Yang finally created a shiny, thin and unbreakable piece of leaf vein. Her idea of leaf-vein embroidery came to completion after hundreds of experiments.
Two years later, Yang opened an embroidery processing factory and offered jobs to more than 500 laid-off female workers, rural women and people with disabilities. “I will keep doing the leaf vein embroidery for the rest of my life because it is meaningful,” she says.
24. What do we know about Yang Li’s folk culture products shop

B. It was a failure before she began to sell similar products.
C. It was intended to preserve traditional Chinese handicrafts.

A. Ambitious and innovative. B. Caring and patient.
C. Persistent and demanding. D. Humorous and optimistic.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. An embroidery skill. B. A promising career.

Food waste is a big problem in Japan and globally. Japan produced around 5.7 million tons of food waste in 2019. The government plans to reduce that by around 2.7 million tons by 2030. Tokyo University researchers Kota Machida and Yuya Sakai have developed a way to transform food waste into cement (水泥) for construction use and more. This is the first-ever process created for making cement entirely from food waste. The researchers say their product is four times as strong as traditional concrete. This particular cement can be used to make things like tea cups or chairs as well. However, there’s one additional feature — it’s also eatable.
Kota and Yuya are the intelligence behind the formation of Fabula Inc., a company with purposes of reducing food waste, and helping fight global warming. As expected, something this unique took years to develop. It took a few attempts to find just the right process. Kota and Yuya created the unique technology while researching possible environment-friendly materials to replace cement-based concrete. Cement production accounts for 8% of the world’s carbon dioxide release.
After a few failures, they realized they could get the cement to bind (黏合) by adjusting the temperatures. “The most challenging part was that each type of food waste requires different temperatures,” Yuya said. So the researchers had to observe them and respond in time. In the experiments, Kota and Yuya have successfully made cement using tea leaves, coffee grounds, cabbage and even lunchbox leftovers.
Fabula Inc. is currently working to make tea cups and furniture, but Yuya is thinking a little bit bigger. Their product could provide relief in the form of eatable emergency shelters in disaster ones. “For example, if food cannot be delivered to the people, they could eat makeshift beds made out of food cement,” he said. To eat the material, a person needs to break it apart and boil it.
28. What’s mainly talked about in paragraph 1 and 2
A. The functions of this particular cement. B. The effects of food waste in the whole world.
C. The characteristics of the newly made cement. D. The process of transforming food waste to cement.
29. Which is one of Kota and Yuya’s purposes in making use of food waste
A. To handle global climate change. B. To extend concrete’s service life.
C. To offer Fabula Inc. more cement. D. To warn how serious food waste is.
30. What made the experiment of making cement out of food waste harder
A. Making sure to make cement tasty. B. Selecting correct food waste timely.
C. Getting cement broken apart easily. D. Adjusting the temperatures constantly.
31. What does the underlined word “makeshift” in the last paragraph mean
A. bendable. B. commercial. C. recyclable. D. temporary.

Personally, there is nothing I love more than asking “stupid” questions, especially the ones that have no right answers. I remember once asking some kids what time it was, at home, in Singapore, and finally on the Moon. After a long giggling silence, finally a shy girl ventured (试探地说) to say that it was “every time” followed by an energetic Einstein who shouted it was “no time”. Both kids shared that week’s Noble Prize, because no humans live in that distant world and time is a human construct.
As a matter of fact, we are all good at asking questions by nature, but sadly as we age, we get accustomed to the world around us and take things for granted. We became more results-oriented (注重结果的) and concentrate our efforts on success. If something is working, don’t fix it or worry about the cause; just relax and go with the flow. Conventional wisdom may work well, but that does not mean it is always right. Throughout history, it has been those who have questioned conventional wisdom and those who have challenged our common-sense notions of the world that have been the ones to have ushered in (开) the major advancements of human civilization.
In 500 BC, the ancient Greeks wondered whether the Earth was round because sailors on the sea had noticed that the farther south they went, the more different stars they saw in the sky. Why was the sky changing Nearly 2,000 years later, the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei became interested in this question and ended up demonstrating the “crazy” concept of heliocentrism (日心说), in which the Sun lies at the center of the universe while the Earth revolves (旋转) around it at 30 kilometers per second. But if the Earth is spinning around so quickly, why aren’t we being thrown off of the surface of the planet The answer to this question would not end up being revealed to us for another century.
People like routine, but past performance is no guarantee of future results. While those who challenge conventional wisdom tend to be subjected to abuse, the progress of humankind would have otherwise been impossible without these persistent people and their “stupid”questions.
32. What is the best title of this article
A. Asking “stupid” questions. B. Is conventional wisdom useless
C. Some major advancements of human civilization D. What caused them to ask conventional questions
33. What commonly happens to us when we grow older according to the author
A. We lay too much emphasis on process.
B. We still refuse to relax and go with the flow.
C. We start to challenge common-sense notions of the world
D. We gradually lose the ability to question conventional wisdom.
34. Who might have solved the question “why aren’t we being thrown off of the surface of the planet ”
A. An ancient Greek scientist living in 500 BC B. Galileo Galilei living between 1564 and 1642.
C. Isaac Newton living between 1643 and 1727. D. Albert Einstein living between 1879 and 1955.
35. How does the author develop his writing on the whole
A. By comparison and contrast. B. By using supporting examples.
C. By using time and space order. D. By generalization and definition

Is your glass of milk half-full or half-empty This saying is often used to test people’s outlook in a situation; do they focus on the positives (a half-full glass) or the negatives (a half-empty one) Thinking positively, with a belief that most things will turn out fine, is called optimism and it’s known to boost your well-being. ____36____
Why is thinking positively good for you
Research shows that people who are optimistic and think positively tend to experience less stress and cope well when faced with life’s challenges. People who are more pessimistic (expect that the worst will happen) may find it hard to believe that these challenges will pass. Scientists have even found that thinking positively can make you live longer. 37 This is because you believe your goals are achievable and within reach, which encourages you to work towards them.
____38_____
Everybody can worry from time to time. Worrying can help to keep you safe. If you were never worried and were greatly positive about how things would turnout, you wouldn’t recognize risks. “Worrying is our brain warning us that there might be something threatening, which functions as a fire alarm.” says child psychotherapist (心理治疗师) Rachel. “The trouble is that sometimes it goes off when there isn’t a huge danger to face.” ____39______
You should learn to think positively.
Optimism is shaped by your genes, which carry characteristics obtained from your parents, and by what happens to you. _____40______ Research has shown that it can help to draw or write an outcome that’s positive, like an image of you playing guitar and having passed your next grade. Imagining this can motivate you to work to achieve it, such as practising everyday afterschool.
A. Worrying is like a fire alarm.
B. Avoid worrying is beneficial to our health.
C. Asking others for help positively makes sense.

Before they swept, they put boxes scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Jack put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn’t sealed, so he opened it. Out of his surprise, there were several one hundred dollar bills inside.
“You’ve got to see this. ” He pulled out the bills and showed Frey, “It just fell down when the box fell. There’s got to be several hundred dollars here.” Jack looked past Frey to the garage door and continued, “Nobody’s here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know.” Before his voice died away, Jack had already drawn out one bill and stuffed it into his pocket.
Frey frowned and shook his head, “Are you crazy That’s stealing.” Jack ignored him and protested, “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing. It’s kind of payment for my hard work. And one hundred will do for a bat and glove in I go’s Sports Stores.” With this, Jack put the rest money back.
Frey was about to grab the money from Jack’s pocket when they heard a voice, “Hello, e in for a chocolate cake! Mrs. Willow made one for you.” Mr. Willow walked into the garage.
