I keep a two-dollar bill in my wallet that was given to me by my mother when I was six years old. I still remember the day when she pulled me into the living room and said, “You are brilliant in my mind, but if you fail once don’t give up. Don’t fear failure. It is a way of getting us to try harder. You will succeed, I promise.”
She looked at me and continued, “I want you to carry this two-dollar bill for extra good luck.”
“Thanks mom,” I replied. “I will keep it close to me always.”
I am not superstitious(迷信的), but from that day on the bill goes with me wherever I go. I firmly believe that luck would follow me everywhere.
Every morning I would get dressed and my two-dollar bill went into my pocket. My mother passed away when I was 17 years old and I remember taking out my two-dollar bill. I held it in my hand for the longest time and knew that she would be watching over me the rest of my life.
Each time I felt I had a crisis on my hands, I would reach for my two-dollar bill and set it on the table. I would stare at it for several hours and could always come up with a solution.
When I applied for my first job, I was thirty years old and very shy. The thought of being interviewed for a job was scary but I had to work. On my first interview, as I sat in the waiting room, I noticed there were five women ahead of me. All of the women were younger and very well dressed. One of them looked perfect in her blue striped suit with matching purse and shoes. I knew I was up against women better qualified by looking at the length of their resumes(简历).

George’s mother was very poor. Instead of having bright blazing fires in winter, she had nothing to burn but dry sticks, which George picked up from under the trees and hedges.
One fine day in July, his sick mother sent George to the woods, which were about two miles from the village in which she lived. He was to stay there all day to get as much wood as he could collect.
It was a bright, sunny day, and George worked very hard; so that by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and wished for a cool place where he might rest and eat his dinner. While he hunted for a spot about the bank he saw among the moss some fine, wild strawberries, which were a bright scarlet with ripeness.
”How good these will be my bread and butter!“thought George. Lining his little cap with leaves he set to work eagerly to gather all he could find and then seated himself by the brook.
It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and contented. He thought how much his mother would like to see him there, and to be there herself, instead of in her dark close room in the village.
George thought of all this and just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself, ”How much mother would like these!“and he stopped, putting the strawberry back again. ”Shall I save them for her “said he, thinking how much they would refresh her, yet still looking at them with a longing eye.
”I will eat half, and take the other half to her, “said he at last, and he divided them into two heaps(t). But each heap looked so small, that he put them together again.
”I will only taste one“thought he. As he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest and he put it back. ”I will keep them all for her, "he said with great happiness, and he covered them up nicely, ready to take home.

Anna poured coffee from the tin pot as the evening sunlight flickered on the prairie (大草原).She hated being stuck helping Rufus, the cook. What Anna loved best was riding. At twelve years old, she was an able cowhand—Papa just never gave her the chance to prove it.
After Anna washed the tin cups and unrolled her bed, she listened to the cowboys talk about the next day’s challenges. “And a storm’s coming, too,” Luk e added. “The horses will be nervous before we even start.”
Anna closed her eyes and tried to sleep, but couldn’t. “The men will need my help!” she thought. But when Papa slipped into his bedroll, he whispered, “Anna, you stay near Rufus tomorrow. It’ll be dangerous.” “But, Papa, I’m a good hand!” “No, Anna. I’d be watching you instead of the herd. It’s settled. Now, off to sleep, darling.”
Anna crossed her arms and stared at the sky. The stars disappeared under a blanket of clouds. The wind whistled and bent the prairie grass. Restless, the cattle wailed and stamped the ground. The camp slept—everyone but Anna. Tears rolled down her face. Why couldn’t Papa understand Ever since Mama’s death, he’d tried to protect Anna from everything. He was killing the fun right out of her life.
Anna felt a few drops of rain. She got up, grabbed her hat, and tiptoed toward her horse, Copper. She wanted to be alone. A loud crack of thunder shook Anna from her thoughts. Copper moved forward nervously. As lightning lit the landscape, Anna saw the herd (兽群) and sensed the same fear. “Whoa!” Anna gasped, trying to keep Copper from dancing. “If this noise keeps up, those cattle will panic!” As she spoke, a bigger blaze of lightning crashed. From the direction of the herd, there came a sudden low rumbling (隆隆声).
“Stampede (畜群逃窜)!” Anna cried. “And it’s coming this way!”

On Dec. 20, Mello called his mother on FaceTime, which he does every day after school. That afternoon, Mello broke down in tears the moment his mother, Anita James, answered the phone. “Mello, what happened ” James asked her son on the phone.
“I’m getting tired of them bullying (欺凌) my friend about his shoes. It’s making me so upset,” he answered in a serious voice, explaining that his classmates made fun of his friend Melvin for having worn-out (穿破的) muddy sneakers.
James listened to Mello’s narration with a thoughtful expression. Then, Mello earnestly asked, “Can we go buy him some shoes ”
James told her son they would talk about it when she got home from work. During their in-person conversation a few hours later, James found her son still upset. At last, Mello decided to buy his friend a fresh pair of sneakers to get rid of bullies and remind him that he has people who care about him.
“Can I use my pocket money, or you can take something away that I would get for Christmas ” Mello asked his mother.
The sincere request from her son hit James for many reasons, including that when she was growing up, her older brother used to buy her sneakers when her parents couldn’t afford them. Now, in their adult lives, James buys her brother a pair of sneakers for his birthday every year to show her appreciation. James was so touched by her little boy’s genuine care for his friend and she knew how it would matter to the poor kid, Melvin.
That evening, they went to a sneaker store and bought a pair of black-and-white Nike shoes for Melvin. Mello used savings from his pocket money to pay for the $85 shoes. This way, Mello thought, “nobody could laugh at him or say anything about him anymore.” Mello was so excited to give Melvin the gift that he woke up nearly an hour early for school.

One bright and breezy morning in Ireland, a leprechaung (小精灵) named Colin marched through the woods. He was whistling like a bird and thinking about how pretty he looked in his new waistcoat (背心), which was as fresh and green as a beautiful spring leaf. With that thought, he tried imitating (模仿) the sound of the wind whistling in the trees. Colin grinned. Copying different sounds was among his greatest strengths.
The peace was broken by the yelling and howling nearby. “Waah! Waah!” What was that Colin dived into a bush, shaking and trembling with fear. Was it a fox or an eagle, ready to snatch him up for breakfast
As he trembled, the sound came again. “Waah! Waah!” Yet nothing leaped out of the bushes. Colin cast a glance around, then sighed in relief.
“Waah! Waah!” He crept toward an open area where a human baby girl sat, filling the air with her cries. “Quiet! Creatures fill the woods,” Colin whispered. He tried singing, dancing, making funny faces, and imitating various animal noises to distract her attention.
“Waah! Waah!” Small hands grabbed for him, and he jumped back. But then he realized the baby’s hands were reaching not for him but for his bright green waistcoat. Unwillingly, he shrugged out of his waistcoat and held it up to the baby, who stopped crying immediately. Soon his waistcoat was gathering drool (口水) as the baby held it to her face. Then, Colin heard the sound of the waistcoat being torn.
Realizing he had lost his beloved waistcoat. Colin sought to find the baby’s parents.
“Pegeen! Where are you ” There were the baby’s parents in the woods, desperate in their shouts. “I was milking the cow,” the father choked, his face worn with worry. Behind him was the baby’s mother, red-eyed from weeping. She cried. “I was sewing and she was gone.”
Colin’s heart was touched. He had to do something. The baby’s parents had been searching in the wrong place. But because a leprechaun mustn’t risk being seen, he couldn’t simply lead them back to the baby.

The little bird perched itself on the tree branch outside Vanessa’s bedroom window. It trilled (啼啭) an energetic song as the first pale yellow rays of sunshine peeked over the horizon.
“Oh my gosh, what is that noise ” she complained to herself, pulling her bed sheets over her head in an attempt to drown out the chirping. It was no use, and she knew it. The loud tweeting signalled the coming of the day. To confirm it, Vanessa’s mom knocked twice on her door, and then came in with a smile. “Time to get up, Sleepyhead,” she whispered. “The early bird catches the worm, you know.”
“Ugh,” mumbled Vanessa into her pillow. “What does that even mean ”
“It’s just an expression, Honey,” her mom replied. She gave Vanessa a kiss on the cheek and urged her to get out of bed. Vanessa rolled over and slept for a few more minutes.
Vanessa shuffled her way downstairs for breakfast, ate slowly, and missed her bus. When she finally got to school, she had missed attendance and had to get a late pass. She missed the first part of math class, so she didn’t understand the lesson and had to get extra help. Her teacher gave her extra homework to make sure she knew it. This day was no fun.
The next morning, Vanessa was woken up by the same loud, twittering song. Instead of ignoring it, today Vanessa walked over to the window and opened the curtains. Soft light filled the room. “Well, hello there, little fellow,” she said when she saw the pretty bird outside, still chirping happily. It was startled by her voice and flew down to land on the fresh dew of the morning grass. As she watched, the bird cocked its head, plunged its beak into the wet ground, and plucked out a wiggling worm for breakfast.

Today was the finals of the Dance Competition. Our team of five had me as the lead dancer; then there was Grace, my best friend and Eric, a dance lover who is a master in perfecting our choreography (编舞); and two talented twins, with such flexibility and grace on the stage that one cannot take their eyes off them.
We had found a perfect coach for our team. Jackie, a cousin of Eric’s, worked in a dance school. She was a bit hesitant at first, but quickly agreed when she saw the progress we had made so far.
In the dressing rooms, there were so many other competitors preparing for their performance, rushing here and there.
Grace and I had changed into our costumes and were putting on our shoes when Eric murmured, “Who are they ”
We turned to follow his stare, among many people, four beautiful girls along with a lean boy had just walked in.
“They’re first-rate!” cried Grace, “more like fashion models.”
They sure were. A look at the list of competitors told me they were from “Tweekverse”, the most famous dance school in the whole country.
Jackie came up behind us, “Guys, it’s time, come on. Let’s go!”
“Oooh, do you get the vibe (氛围) ” Grace was excited. I could understand her, I didn’t feel any less thrilled.
When we entered the concert hall, my jaw literally just dropped. It was massive. There were so many people. The four judges, who were seated at a large panel, did look very serious.
The competition started. The first performances were brilliant. One team had the neon (霓虹) theme, in which they wore shine-in-the-dark costumes and the whole place was dark. I was attracted to their impressive display. Obviously, everybody was. The judges’ cards displayed the scores. They were marking out of ten.
The next performances were even better, but for us, they became more competitive. The group from Tweekverse was the best. Their costumes, charming faces and fascinating performance impressed everyone.

Grandfather looked worried as he felt the inside of Caper’s front hoof(蹄). The small horse was in pain. “It’s warm,” said Grandfather with a sigh. “I think he has a mild case of founder(蹄叶炎). Let him have a rest. In a few days he should be right as rain.”
Caper couldn’t pull the cart, which meant they couldn’t go to the market the next day. The fish couldn’t be sold and they wouldn’t get enough money to pay for the rent. Aislinn had tears in her eyes. “The sea has always been kind to us. There will be more fish. And the rent will get paid. Now off to bed with you. Leave the worrying to me,” said Grandfather, smiling at Aislinn. “Good night,” Aislinn said as she headed toward her room, trying her best to hold back her tears. “Sweet dreams,” Grandfather called after her.
Sleep would not come. Aislinn wished Grandfather could sell the fish he’d worked so hard to catch. She wished they had enough money for the rent. But above all Aislinn wished that Caper’s hooves would stop hurting. She suddenly remembered when she’d twisted(扭伤)her own ankle. Grandfather had told her to keep ice on it, and the swelling had gone down.
“Could the same thing help Caper ” Aislinin wondered. Suddenly Aislinn had a better idea, and she jumped out of bed. She knocked on Grandfather’s bedroom door, and found Grandfather was also wide awake. Aislinn came in and asked Grandfather whether it would help if they stood Caper in the sea, in the cold water. Grandfather thought for a while and said that might work. He asked Aislinn to take a blanket and some hot tea. “You don’t have to stay out that long, you know,” said Grandfather. “I want to,” said Aislinn, filled with hope that her idea would work. With her arms full, she followed Grandfather out into the night.

Summer was approaching, and Sarah and David had been eagerly looking forward to their visit to their grandpa’s countryside home. They had always enjoyed their time with their grandpa, who had a kind and generous heart. His wooden house was surrounded by beautiful greenery, and the fields of flowers that spread beyond the house were breathtaking. As they packed their bags for the trip, Sarah and David could hardly control their excitement. They talked about all the activities they could do with grandpa, like playing board games and taking long walks in the countryside.
Finally, the day arrived, and the family set out on their journey to grandpa’s house. The journey was a long and tiring one, but Sarah and David were too excited to feel tired. As they drew closer to their destination, they chatted even more excitedly about all the fun things they wanted to do with grandpa.
As they approached grandpa’s house, he came out to greet them with a huge smile on his face. Sarah and David were overjoyed to see him and hugged him tightly. It was great to be back in grandpa’s arms, and they felt the warmth and love from him.
However, shortly after they entered the house, they noticed that grandpa was not his usual self, looking pale and tired. Sarah and David felt a pang of sadness and worry in their hearts. Grandpa was not well, and they didn’t know how to make him feel better.
As they sat with grandpa, trying to make him feel comfortable, Sarah remembered that grandpa loved gardening. She suggested that they could create a garden for him, which would be a lovely surprise. I started reading to myself, as well as out loud to Mother and other family members, between the ages of three and four. By the time I turned five, I was reading “chapter books,” like the Bobbsey Twins. I read whenever books came my way, usually by my mother taking me to the town’s small but book-packed library on Saturdays. Along my journey as a reader, there were other helping hands that develop my love for books-Mrs. Eleanor Harrison, my first-grade teacher.
When I started first grade, making friends became a challenge for me. My rich vocabulary made me easy to be labeled as a bookworm (书呆子), causing other children to shy away from playing with me. My mother explained that there would be “stuff” I already knew while others didn’t. Reading was one such skill — I could read while none of my classmates were able to. Therefore, when we moved to a new city, and I found myself in a new school, I decided to pretend that I didn’t know many words either, just to fit in.
On the first day of school, my mother walked me there and introduced herself to Mrs. Harrison, my new teacher. After that, I walked to school and back home by myself. However, around a month later, something significant happened. One afternoon, when I came home from school, my mother told me that my teacher, Mrs. Harrison, had called and wanted to have a meeting with her. I immediately asked if I was in trouble since I had only heard of teachers calling parents when there was all issue.
“She didn’t say so,” responded Mother, as thoughts raced through my mind, “She said she wanted to talk to me about you.” Mother pulled me to her — one of her healing hugs. I trusted my mother. I knew she loved me. I blurted out, “So, you think this will have a ‘happily ever after’ ending ” Mother kissed me on the top of my head, just as she often did, and smiled saying, “Yes. I’m sure it will be alright.”

Late that afternoon, while I was cooking, the telephone rang. It was from Mrs. Martin Gina. Mello beamed with a warm smile on his face, as if he had anticipated Melvin’s reaction, and whispered in his friend’s ear that there would be no more teasing from other kids about his worn-out shoes. After weeks of getting constant smirks about his sneakers, Melvin couldn’t wait to put on his new shoes. Looking at the shiny Nike shoes on Melvin’s feet, Mello was overjoyed.
Bryant Brown, the school’s social studies teacher, spotted the shoe box on Melvin’s desk. He asked Melvin for the backstory. It brought the teacher to tears. After asking for the two boys’ consent, he decided to share the story on Facebook, hoping it might inspire others. The post got thousands of likes, shares and comments. Brown was stunned by the response. He is now planning to launch an anti-bullying campaign in the coming weeks. Hundreds of students, parents and teachers have signed up for the activity with the hope that there’s no place in the world for bullies and Mello’s helping hand always lives on.

At the sound of her parents’ voice, the baby dropped the waistcoat and cried. Immediately, the mother rushed over and scooped up the baby in a joyful dance. Two days later, Colin was wandering through the woods when he spotted something familiar hanging from a branch. It was his beloved waistcoat-now washed and mended, looking as good as new. Colin snatched up the waistcoat, happy to have it back in his possession. As he held it close, he discovered a note attached to it, which reads, “Thank you! You’ve made a difference to our life!”Colin grinned as he slipped the waistcoat on and then strutted forward, crowing like a rooster. The day of the meeting came. Mrs. Harrison told my mother that she noticed I was a very special child. In the course of class, my reading speed was very fast and understanding ability was relatively strong, which suggested my knowledge was very wide. She could see that there were many books I should be reading. But she found out I was hiding some of my abilities. Recently, the school wanted to hold a school reading festival, and wanted to find a student representative to speak on stage, to tell about their reading experience and introduce the benefits of reading. My mother also introduced my actual situation to Mrs. Harrison, and gladly accepted the task. When she got home, she told me the news immediately.
“I like that idea!” Firmly, I nodded a yes. My mother and I began to actively prepare my speech, the title of which was the reading story of a little bookworm. In my speech, I introduced that I had been fond of reading since childhood, and reading enriched my vocabulary, my thoughts, and made me have a broader knowledge and vision. I hoped that I could continue to maintain my enthusiasm for reading, and that more and more students could actively participate in reading activities. I also hoped to find more friends who loved reading, communicate with each other and make progress together.
