Leslie Jones is a well-known comedian and actress, best known for her time on “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) and her work in stand-up comedy. Her journey into comedy started unexpectedly.
When she was a college freshman, and a friend signed her up for a campus comedy contest. Despite having no previous experience in stand-up, she immediately felt comfortable on stage and won the contest. This experience lit her passion for comedy. However, Leslie Jones faced challenges in pursuing (追求) a professional comedy career.
At the age of 19, she received advice from Jamie Foxx, who suggested that she needed more life experiences to draw material from for her comedy. Foxx advised her to go out, live life, work various jobs, and gain a broader range of experiences to enrich her comedy. Jones took Foxx’s advice to heart and took on a series of jobs, including working as a justice of the peace at weddings and even working for a construction company owned by Scientologists. Throughout these experiences, she kept her ultimate goal of becoming a comedian in mind.
In her memoir, Leslie Jones, she reflects on her upbringing as a military brat, her journey through the male-dominated (男人主宰的) world of comedy clubs, and her eventual breakthrough when she joined the cast of SNL in 2014 at the age of 47.
One unique aspect of Leslie Jones’ comedy style is her commitment to physical comedy, even if it sometimes results in injury. She’s willing to take risks and use her physicality to get laughs from her audience. She’s known for her energetic and bold performances, which often involve physical performance or exaggerated movements.
In summary, Leslie Jones’ comedy career began unexpectedly in college, and despite facing initial challenges, she pursued a variety of life experiences to enrich her comedy. Her devotion to physical comedy and her unique approach have contributed to her success in the entertainment industry.

Scientists have used lasers (激光) to generate electricity in the lab before. Recently Swiss researchers have found in a mountaintop experiment that a powerful laser can grab hold of a lightning flash and reroute its path through the sky, which is the first demonstration that the technique works in real-world storms and could someday lead to better protection, against lightning.
Today’s most common anti-lightning tech is the classic lightning rod, a meters-long metal pole rooted to the ground. It attracts lightning and safely guides the electricity into the ground. But the area protected by a lightning rod is limited by the rod’s height. “If you want to protect large buildings like airports, you would need a lightning rod of kilometer size,” says Aurélien Houard, a French physicist. Such at all metal pole would be impractical But a laser could reach that far, stopping distant lightning flashes and taking them down to ground-based metal rods.
Houard and his colleagues tested this idea a top S ntis mountain in Switzerland. They setup a high-power laser near a telecommunication tower tipped with a lightning rod that is struck by lightning around 100 times every year. The tower was hit by lightning four times while the laser was on. One of those strikes happened in a fairly clear sky, allowing two high-speed cameras to shoot the moment. Those images showed lightning rushing down from the clouds and following the laser light for some 50 meters toward the tower’s lightning rod.
To follow the paths of the three flashes they couldn’t see, the researchers looked at radio waves given off by the lightning. Those radio waves showed the three strikes followed the path of the laser much more closely than other strikes that happened when the laser was off. This suggested that the laser guided these three strikes to the lightning rod as well.
It’s a real achievement but the laser is too expensive. It’ll probably take a decade or more before it’s truly able to protect large buildings.
28.What new function of lasers was discovered in the outdoor experiment
A.To prevent storms. B.To produce electricity.
C.To set off lightning flashes. D.To redirect lightning strikes.
29.What aspect of a lightning rod does paragraph 2 focus on
A.Its category. B.Its structure. C.Its weakness. D.Its inventor.
30.How did the researchers track the invisible lightning flash
A.Through cameras. B.Through its radio waves.
C.Through a tower. D.Through a lightning rod.
31.Where can we most probably read this text
A.In a personal diary. B.In a popular magazine.
C.In a physics textbook. D.In a class presentation.

The British may be made fun of for their weather-related small talk, but a recent study suggests that just four minutes of chatting can reveal aspects of our personality and influence subsequent social interactions.
Researchers divided 338 participants into two groups before meeting in person and asked each participant to complete a personality and IQ test. Within each group, participants were paired and either conversed by text for 4 minutes or had no contact with their partner. Participants were then required to infer aspects of their partner’s personality and predict whether they would act cooperatively or selfishly in two money-based strategy games.
The results showed that those who chatted scored higher in predicting their partners’ IQ and personality test responses, but were also more likely to project their own personality characteristics on to their partners. “Our research suggests that in just a few minutes of small talk, we begin to form a mental model of the person we’re talking to,” says Professor Sgroi.
Participants then met and played with their conversation partner or, in the case of the no-contact group, met and played with strangers.
The researchers then gave each participant 20 and asked them to contribute to a joint pot (罐) shared with their partners, an experiment called the Public Goods Game.
The team says people who have chatted with their partners are more likely to correctly predict their contributions to the pot. In addition, those who chatted beforehand contributed 30% more than those who did not. The results also depended on the relationships they established through small talk.
Georgie Nightingall, founder of Trigger Conversations, says that small talk is a great way to encourage cooperation in the workplace. “People are bad at small talk because it feels like there is no end to it. It can feel awkward and pointless once you have all the information you need. While asking questions helps build relationships with people, people will be happy to have a chat if you show that you care about others. My advice is to be sincere (真诚) and considerate.”
32.What does the underlined word “reveal” mean in Paragraph 1
A.Contribute to. B.Give away. C.Limit. D.Change.
33.What helps conversation partners predict their contributions correctly
A.Their common interests and hobbies.
B.The differences of their personalities.
C.The accurate judgments of each other’s IQ.
D.Their previous impressions and connections.
34.What does Nightingall suggest we do to inspire others to communicate with us
A.Avoid asking them questions. B.Share our personal privacy.
C.Show genuine concern for them. D.Start with our strengths and virtues.
35.What’s the purpose of this text
A.To present a research outcome.
B.To describe a cultural phenomenon.
C.To assess British people’s social skills.
D.To motivate people to interact by texting.

39 When you need to remember a piece of information, try relating it to a picture that is easily remembered. This is how many people remember positions. They can simply recall that the store is near the bridge.

Debra, a five-year-old cousin of mine, often annoyed me. She wished me to stay with her, talk to her and teach her dancing. I hated it and never taught her to dance. That hot July afternoon, Debra annoyed me again.
Our big family all gathered together at a friend’s outdoor wedding. The children were running around and playing games. The afternoon couldn’t have been better. My friends and I gathered together and excitedly talked about our up-and-coming freshman year. Debra desired to join us, but what could a five-year-old kid contribute to our conversations
I left the table where we were sitting, leaving behind my mother, my grandmother and Debra. I walked inside the house and greeted everyone inside before making my way to the bathroom. As I was washing my hands, there was a big knock and the bathroom door burst open. It was an older cousin of mine, Sylvia. With a look of fear, anxiety and shock, she rushed to find towels. I figured one of the kids was injured while playing. “There has been a bad accident outside,” she told me and rushed out.
What kind of accident Was anyone hurt I left the bathroom. A woman approached and told me that a guest who was leaving the party had lost control of his car. Then I heard a voice calling my name. It was my mother. She told me, “Debra has been badly e and help rescue her!” My heart dropped to my feet. I was struck by the sudden thought that I might lose her.
I hurried outside. Tables and chairs were overturned everywhere by the runaway car. I was in shock. My mother quickly drove our car around and laid down the backseat. But where was Debra I saw her parents running from a room with a piece of board, perfectly Debra’s size. I didn’t see my tiny cousin until she was put onto the board and laid in the car, crying. Her new white dress had blood, and on her left shoe was a tire (轮胎) mark.

Okay, coffee, tea, and cold drinks are served all day in the cafe, which is just inside the main entrance to the hotel. Lunch is served between twelve o’clock and two thirty in the private dining room. This evening, you are invited to join the management for drinks by the swimming pool. The general manager usually makes a short welcome speech. I’d like to apologize for the temperature; I’m afraid it’s a little warmer than usual in here because the air conditioning in the business center is being repaired. However, the work will be completed before lunchtime.
Right, there are some changes to the conference program. Unfortunately, one of the main speakers has canceled her talk, and so a couple of the sessions have been canceled or rescheduled. The updated program is being printed at the moment. Okay, now before we go for breakfast, are there any questions

With love and care, she slowly recovered, and before long, she was back on her feet, dancing and laughing like the Debra we all knew and loved.
