Richard Browning has been attracted by flight ever since his father took him into the hills to fly gliders (滑翔机). He has certainly been an adventurer. Richard took it upon himself to develop his own jet suit and began to experiment with some of his friends. He made quick progress. In 2017, he felt confident enough to start a company called Gravity Industries that could make jet suits. It took 15 months to develop the very first one.
Five very small jet engines are built into the jet suit. These are powered by kerosene (煤油). Two engines are located on the pilot’s arms and one is placed on the back. Each engine weighs less than two kilos and can produce22 kilos of thrust(推力).
The pilot is able to control the direction and speed of the flight. He does this by small movements of the arms which require hours of practice. One wrong move and you could end up falling to the ground.
Richard is not only in charge of his company; he is also the chief test pilot. He has spent hours and hours perfecting the correct moves to create a perfect flight. He was able to enter the Guinness Book of World Records in 2017 when he became the fastest man in a jet suit and flew at 51 kilometres per hour. Since then, he has presented his jet suit at 60 events in 20 different countries around the world. More recently, he flew alongside Brighton Pier on the south coast of England at 136 kilometres per hour!
The objective of Richard’s company has been to build a suit which members of the public can buy. The first went on sale in a department store in 2018 for f 340, 000. If you want to jet around your own hometown, it’s time to start saving—or to work for Richard Browning.

The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most diverse places in America, a wonderful place filled with people from all backgrounds. Each of them drew something different from their own experience. Their stories are the focus of Status Update, an exhibition of 14 projects offered by Dundon and former WIRED contributor Pete Brook. The show at SOMarts uses personal tales to show the Bay Area’s culture.
The Bay Area is a microcosm (缩影) of the national melting pot, a place where people of color comprise 58 percent of the overall population and are a majority in four of the region’s five countries, San Francisco in particular is the type of place where you can’ t walk down the street without hearing another language. Yet the change is not all for the better. The gap between rich and poor is widening at a frightening speed, and San Francisco is becoming less diverse as minorities escape from the city for more affordable communities elsewhere in the region.
Status Update reflects these changes and the challenges they bring. Joseph Rodriguez’s Faces of Foreclosure features quiet images of people like Ethel Gist, who lost her home in the East Bay suburb of Brentwood six years ago. Photographer Sam records Oakland resident Shannon and his efforts to provide for his daughter. And Laura Morton documents millennials (千禧一代 )hoping to make their way to the top in Silicon Valley in her series Wild West Tech.
Status Update starts a conversation about how the Bay Area is changing, and what people can do to build up a more just equitable (公正的) society. “I hope people walk away from this show with a little more respect for our neighbors and communities and the ways we depend on one another.” Dundon says. “we’re all out here together”
28.What are the artworks in Status Update mainly about
A.The real lives of people in the Bay Area.
B.The beautiful construction of the Bay Area.
C.The friendliness of people in the Bay Area.
D.The technological development of the Bay Area.
29.What is happening in San Francisco
A.It is facing a rapid economic slowdown.
B.The population has been falling in recent years.
C.More and more local people tend to speak the same language.
D.It is getting harder and harder for minorities to afford their lives.
30.What’s the most suitable subject of Status Update
A.Sharing the successful experience of the Bay Area.
B.Recording the diversity and change of the Bay Area.
C.Introducing the long and rich history of the Bay Area.
D.Showing the past, the present and the future of the Bay Area.
31.What does Dundon expect of visitors
A.They can know more about themselves. B.They can open their hearts to other people.
C.They can respect the people around them. D.They can develop an interest in diverse cultures.

Nowadays, countries are eager to get more electric cars on the road because moving away from gas-powered vehicles is vital to fighting climate change. China says that most new vehicles sold by 2035 will be electric. The United Kingdom will ban new gas-powered cars in 2030. One of the world’s major automakers, General Motors (GM), announced that it would stop selling gas-powered cars by 2035.
The key to an electric future is batteries. Automakers are racing to pack the most energy into the smallest one. The lithium-ion battery is what powers our mobile devices, which can be recharged again and again. Making these batteries has an environmental cost. Lithium is taken from the earth, like the oil used to make gasoline. But the long-term cost is much smaller. “Once you burn gasoline, you can’t recycle it,” says Jessika Trancik, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “But when you use up a battery, you can still recycle the material.”
It’s up to governments to make electric cars accessible to everyone. National policies can help. In the United States, an electric Chevy Volt costs about $35, 000. Trancik says charging stations must also be made widely available. As part of an effort to fight climate change, America plans to build half a million of them in the US by 2030. She hopes enough charging stations will be built soon. “It’s important to put chargers where many different people can have access to them,” she says, “not just wealthier people.”
Last year, almost 5% of approximately 67 million new cars sold world widewere electric. For Venkat Viswanathan, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, green electricity is part of the solution to climate change, and electric cars are just the beginning. He sees a future of solar powered homes and electric flying cars. “Soon, a plug in vehicle might be as cheap as a gas-powered car. It is now abundantly clear that electric is the future,” he says. “It will be a totally new world.”
32.Why are countries eager to promote electric cars
A.To reduce the cost of vehicles.
B.To increase the availability of charging stations.
C.To promote solar-powered homes.
D.To deal with climate change.
33.What does Trancik indicate about charging stations in Paragraph 3
A.They should come down in price. B.They may be unfairly laid out.
C.Enough of them have been built. D.They favor more ordinary people.
34.What can be inferred from Viswanathan’s words
A.Gas-powered cars will be cheaper. B.The price of batteries will drop sharply.
C.Electric vehicles will beat climate change. D.Green electricity will be widely used.
35.Which word best describes Trancik’s attitude to the lithium-ion battery
A.Positive. B.Skeptical.
C.Conservative. D.Disapproving.

Opening presents carefully selected by our parents is our family tradition on Christmas morning, which always pushes the festive atmosphere to the climax. However, this year’s Christmas seemed not as happy as usual.
It was Christmas Eve when my sister and I decided to open our presents before our mom got home from work. Though worried about ruining my mom’s original plan, we still wanted to sneak a peek (偷看) at the gifts in advance, driven by a strong impulse of curiosity. Since my sister was older, and that put her in charge, she opened the first gift while I was ordered to stand guard at the big picture window in our front room. I was to report any suspicious activity or person, namely our mother, who can easily capture the details of life.
I was so excited that I could barely stand still. I also couldn’t keep my eyes on the window very long. My head moved from the window to my sister and back to the window again. I felt like I was watching a Ping-Pong match.
“All right!” my sister shouted. She pulled out a jewelry box. “You know what that means, don’t you ”
I jumped up and down. “Yeah, it’s my turn!”
“No,” she said. “It means that there must be some jewelry under here.” I watched my sister rummaging (翻寻) through the presents under the tree, trying to find one she thought was small enough to be a necklace or earrings.
“Hey, that’s not fair!” I complained, stomping my foot.
“Are you watching for Mom ” is all that she said. I couldn’t do anything except stand guard as she opened present after present. Finally, when my sister’s curiosity was satisfied and she had finished wrapping her last present back up, we traded places.
My heart hammered so hard that it felt like my chest was moving in and out. My sister reminded me to be careful so I wouldn’t tear the paper, and to wrap the present back up the same way that I had found it.
After unwrapping a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and peek inside. “Headphones! How can my mom know what I want! Without any hesitation, I pulled the headphones out of the box.

M: Ivan Fletcher loves crazy inventions. He writes a weekly magazine column called “Unbelievable Inventions”. One of his favorite inventions is the Butter Stick. It looks like a stick of glue, but it’s butter. You rub it on the bread instead of using a knife. Another cool invention is Duster Slippers for pets. You put these special shoes on your dog or cat. As the animal runs around your house, it collects dust from the floor. These inventions come from Japan, the home of the crazy invention. Ivan says that the British also invent a lot of crazy things. For example, the other day he found an invention called a Cat Seat Saver. It looks exactly like a sleeping cat but it isn’t real. You put it on your seat if you have to go to the restroom. No one will sit in your seat because they think there’s a sleeping cat on it. Here are some more: Fish Radio. This useful radio is completely waterproof, so you can listen to it in the shower. Simply stick it on the bathroom wall and sing along to your favorite songs as you shower! Watch Your Back Mirror. Don’t get caught surfing the Internet or sending e-mails to your friends. Attach this mirror to your computer screen and you’ll be able to see when the boss is coming!

这是一篇说明文。文章主要就如何计划好旅行提出了一些建议。
【详情解析】
36.根据上文“Whether you’re traveling to the next town over or to the other side of the world, careful planning goes a long way toward ensuring your trip is a success. The right preparation helps you avoid potential disasters, such as having your credit card declined or running out of clean clothes to wear.(无论你是要去另一个城镇,还是要去世界的另一端,仔细的计划对确保你的旅行成功大有帮助。正确的准备可以帮助你避免潜在的灾难,比如你的信用卡被拒绝,或者没有干净的衣服可穿)”结合后文提出了一些计划旅行的建议,故F选项“下面是一些关于如何计划好你的旅行,以确保一次美好的旅行经历的提示”符合语境,故选F。
37.根据后文“where you want to stay and how you want to get around, make your reservations.(你想住在哪里,想怎么去旅行,请提前预定)”可知,后文提到了旅行的住宿和交通方式的选择,可见本句是在说明其条件:确定了你想去的地方和时间。故C选项“一旦你确定了你想去的地方和时间”符合语境,故选C。
38.根据上文“Before you do anything, you need to know how much money you will have for this trip.(在你做任何事情之前,你需要知道这次旅行你有多少钱)”以及后文“so start your planning by breaking down how much you want to spend on transportation, food, accommodation, sightseeing and any other activities you hope to include in your trip.(所以,开始你的计划时,先把你想在交通、食物、住宿、观光和任何其他你希望包括在旅行中的活动上的花费分解开来)”可知,上文提到了旅行要提前进行预算,可知本句承接上文说明原因:如果你旅行时不提前计划,很容易超支。故G选项“如果你旅行时不提前计划,很容易超支”符合语境,故选G。
39.根据后文“If you’re going abroad, you may be required to get a visa. Besides, check the website of your intended country’s consulate or embassy to see what is required for you to enter the country. Visas may take weeks or even months to finalize, so check early in the planning process.(如果你要出国,你可能需要获得签证。除此之外,你还可以去你想去的国家的领事馆或大使馆的网站上看看你进入这个国家需要什么。签证可能需要几周甚至几个月的时间来完成,所以在计划过程中要尽早检查)”可知,本段主要是关于获得签证的说明,B选项中visa对应后文中visa。故B选项“如有必要,获得国际目的地签证”符合语境,故选B。
40.根据上文“Pack appropriate clothing for your destination and trip. Check the weather at your destination 2-3 days before you depart. This will let you know what type of clothes you need to bring.(为你的目的地和旅行打包合适的衣服。出发前2到3天查看目的地的天气。这会让你知道你需要带什么样的衣服)”以及后文“Will you be expected to wear a suit for a conference, or will you be able to bathe in a bathing suit on the beach (你是想要穿西装参加会议,还是可以穿着泳衣在沙滩上洗澡?)”可知,后文的反问句表明考虑旅行的性质,故A选项“另外,考虑一下你旅行的性质”符合语境,故选A。

The boats lie on their sides while nets 47 to dry on lines between fishermen’s houses. Peaceful and beautiful! How can it possibly get any better I 48 .
My final stop is the islands of Fernando, 49 a few hundred kilometers out in the Atlantic. They once were used as a prison and later by the army. Today, they are a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, 50 with birds and sea life. The beach there is a perfect 51 of sand, sea, and sky. The water is pale blue and warm, alive with colorful fish, 52 , and other marine life; the sand is the color of 53 . In the rocks and strong winds that 54 come in from the Atlantic, there is the wilderness I was seeking. Finally, I’ve found the beach of my dreams. I 55 my toes in the sand deeply and imagine I can hold on to this place forever.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 2:
Christmas morning finally approached, and we were ready to open our presents again!__________________

【参考答案】
Paragraph 1
I was about to put them on when my sister shouted, “Quick! Mom’s coming!” My heart hit the floor along with the headphones when I heard my sister’s shout. My body was as frozen as a snowman. “Come on!” My sister’s face was as white as the paint on the wall. I shoved the headphones back in the box but my hands were shaking so much that I tore the paper trying to wrap it back up. My sister was yelling at me, which only made my hands shake more. My heart pounded harder as I tried to get the tape to stick. “Just shove it under the tree and put some presents on top of it!” my sister shouted as she ran to stall my mother. I had just finished burying the package with my head-phones in it when my mother came into the front room. I jumped up and said, “Hi, Mom!” She smiled at me and said, “Hi,” back, but didn’t appear to suspect a thing. My heart began to slow as I took a deep breath. That was close. Too close!
Paragraph 2
Christmas morning finally approached, and we were ready to open our presents again! I tore the paper from the box, I exclaimed out “Headphones!”. After everything had been opened, my sister and I exchanged glances and pretended as if nothing had happened the night before. This slightly suspicious eye contact seemed to be discovered by my mother, who had an acute sense of every detail in life. Unexpectedly, she still squeezed a faint smile and didn’t reveal the fact. Our secret was seemingly safe, but somehow that Christmas morning didn’t feel the same. What we had done spoiled my mother’s original plan of giving us a surprise, and even ruined our festive atmosphere of Christmas. From then on, my sister and I never opened our Christmas presents early again, because each wrapped gift is a carrier of family love, which should be unwrapped at a proper time.
