The flowers are blooming and the birds are singing as Melinda sits in the rose garden of the nursing home. She is recalling old times as she waits for her family’s arrival. The nursing home has been Melinda’s new settlement ever since Thomas passed away a week ago. Thomas had fought a long and hard battle against lung cancer for three years. Unfortunately, he has broken the promise that he and Melinda had made: to be with each other for every birthday. Melinda knew this was unrealistic (不现实的) but agreed to the promise for Thomas’s sake.
“Thomas, you are completely a dreamer” Melinda shouted to Thomas as he dragged on about living on an island with his beautiful wife. That’s what she loved about him most — he had a vivid imagination. They got married at age eighteen and began having children right away. Mary came within the year, followed by Thomas Benjamin Ⅱ, Lilly-Ann, and Joseph “Little Joey” George. The family lived an exultant life filled with laughter and love.
“Mom!” Lilly shouted, but it really sounded like a howl. Melinda had lost herself in thinking about the life she had shared with her late husband. Lilly pushed her down the long dark halls of the nursing home until they arrived at the recreational room.
When the doors opened, Melinda put her hand over her mouth and was completely speechless. The room was crowded with the people nearest and dearest to her and the warmth and love was felt instantly. The night went on; stories and cocktails were shared and everything was perfect.
However, when Melinda caught a moment to herself she looked around at her family. With a smile on her face, she raised her Manhattan and called out for a toast. “This one is for you, Thomas, though you are not here.”
24.Which of the following best explains “exultant” underlined in Paragraph 2

25.Why did Thomas break his promise
A.He was busy with his work. B.He died of lung cancer.
C.He had to serve in the army. D.He stopped loving Melinda.
26.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Melinda’s children forgot their father. B.Melinda was tired of noise.
C.Melinda missed her husband badly. D.Melinda liked to drink alcohol.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.A Particular Birthday B.A Woman at a Nursing Home
C.Memories of Old Day D.A Big Surprise for Melinda
C
Time and time again, I hear someone ask why anyone would want to keep an “ugly” building or a building that is dirty and clearly in need of work. I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover.
Take the Queen Emma Building for example. While people may remember that building being named as one of the ugliest buildings in town, the angle from which a preservationist will view the building is that it is uniquely constructed with an artistical brise-soleil (遮阳板) to block the sun. The designer used standard concrete bricks to form a decorative wall. Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removed in 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town.
Sometimes people remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “very unpleasant” piece of architecture and can’t get over their anger, even when that building becomes an important part of our story. This is particularly true in San Francisco where many preservationists themselves dislike anything newer, than the Victorian era. Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class. Should that history be wiped from our memories
Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying pars of our history — not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.
28.How do preservationists see buildings
A.They focus on their value rather than appearance.
B.They pay great attention to ancient buildings.
C.They are devoted to repairing famous buildings.
D.They prefer ugly buildings to beautiful ones.
29.What does the author think of removing the brise-soleil of the Queen Emma Building
A.It’s confusing. B.It’s pleasing.
C.It’s regrettable. D.It’s unbelievable.
30.Why were many Victorian buildings in San Francisco tom down
A.To wipe the history of the Victorian era.
B.To make land available for cheap housing.
C.To work off the deep anger of the working class.
D.To restore the architecture before the Victorian era.
31.What is the author’s intention of writing this passage
A.To introduce some buildings with historical value.
B.To explain the reason why architects make ugly buildings.
C.To praise the work of preservationists.
D.To stress the importance of preserving ugly buildings.
D
Antarctica (南极洲) is a great, icy land, surrounded by the huge Southern Ocean. The ice in Antarctica doesn’t just cover the land. There’s also a large area of sea ice, which floats (漂浮) on the ocean’s surface.
Scientists have been measuring the area of the sea ice in Antarctica since 1979. For most of this time, Antarctica has seemed to be almost not influenced by the changing weather conditions experienced in other parts of the planet. In fact, until recent years, Antartica’s sea ice area mainly set records for growing.
That began to change around 2016. Now, for several years, the area of Antartica’s sea ice has been getting smaller. This year, the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reported that Antartica’s sea ice reached its maximum on September 10 — almost two weeks earlier than normal. And the sea ice was at a new record low — not just by a little bit, but by a lot.
The last time Antartica’s low sea ice set a record at the end of winter was in 1986. And this year, there’s about 1.03 million square kilometers less sea ice than in 1986. It’s hard to picture such a large area, but it’s around 1.6 times the size of France.
Scientists are still trying to understand what is driving the change in Antarctica. Ted Scambos, a research scientist at the University of Colorado, says, “Antarctica’s ice levels have always changed some, but the situation this year is pointing towards warmer ocean conditions around the area.”
The new low record has scientists worried. The sea ice is important, because it helps cool the planet. When it’s frozen, sea ice reflects sunlight back out into space. But when the sea ice melts (融化), the water left behind is darker, and takes in and keeps more heat.
32.What did NSIDC find about the sea ice in Antarctica this year
A.It protected the wildlife in the ocean. B.It grew and covered a wider area.
C.It turned out to be difficult to observe. D.It reached a new record low level.
33.Why does the author mention France in paragraph 4
A.To present the total area of the country.
B.To introduce a new topic for discussion.
C.To show the sharp loss of Antarctica’s sea ice.
D.To explain the position of the wonderful land.
34.What causes the change in Antarctica according to Ted Scambos
A.Low rainfall. B.Rising temperatures.
C.Cold weather. D.Short summer months.
35.What can we know about Antarctica’s sea ice
A.It’s key to the earth’s cooling system. B.It’s just a short-term problem.
C.It reminds us to find water resources. D.It offers humans a bright future.

On July 8, 2017, eight members of a family in total, were enjoying an evening together at the beach in Panhandle, Florida. As the sun sank lower on the horizon, the two boys Noah 11 and Stephen 8 swam into the waves without the grown-ups noticing. Soon they realized that the ocean had pulled them into the sea. After trying and failing to swim back, they started waving and screaming for help. But the lifeguards had been off duty for the evening.
The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Jacky and Tabatha, a couple from Georgia, heard them. They dived into the water and soon reached the two brothers. But after a few minutes, they were all trapped in a rip current (离岸流),a powerful one that could sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea! By then, some teenagers had heard the cry. One of the teens rushed into the water, grabbed Jacky. and pulled him back to shore. Meanwhile, Tabatha could feel herself being pulled farther out. She was already exhausted and beginning to feel desperate as she was trying to save both boys alone.
Onshore, Jacky was terrified. A man stopped. “What’s wrong ” asked Shaun, who was heading back to his car. “My wife is drowning!" Brittany said. Shaun immediately strode (大步跨) into the water. But several minutes later, a gaping 15 feet still lay between him and Tabatha and the boys. He knew that if he continued, he’d become another victim. He turned around to seek help.
It was about that time that Roberta, the boys’ mother, returned from the bathroom and looked around for her children. She was shocked to spot them floating much farther out than they were allowed to go. She fought the waves to get to her screaming sons and the stranger who was trying to save them, but she quickly discovered it was nearly impossible to make headway in any direction. Looking around, Roberta sighed with relief to see some more people coming to help.

My name is Katy Williamson and I’m a student at Southgate University. I’m the captain of the university women’s football team. I’d like to tell you about my typical day. I get up at 6 am and at 6:30 I go to the gym. I usually spend about an hour there. And then I walk back to the university and have a huge breakfast at about 8. Lectures are from 10 o’clock until 1 pm. I’m studying medicine so I spend quite a lot of time in the laboratory. After lunch I usually study in the library. There’s sometimes football practice between 5 and 6, so I have to finish all my homework before then. We play matches against teams from other universities on Friday afternoons, so I have to make sure I’m always free then. In the evenings I like watching TV — I’m usually too tired to do anything else. 25. 根据第一段中的“The nursing home has been Melinda’s new settlement ever since Thomas passed away a week ago. Thomas had fought a long and hard battle against lung cancer for three years.Unfortunately, he has broken the promise that he and Melinda had made...(自从Thomas一周前去世以来,这家养老院一直是Melinda的新住处。Thomas与肺癌进行了长达三年的艰苦斗争。不幸的是,他违背了他和梅琳达的承诺……)”可知,Thomas没有遵守诺言是因为他因为肺癌去世了。故选B。

30.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class.(是的,这是一个悲剧,许多人没有欣赏维多利亚时代的建筑,让许多在几十年前被拆除,但这些损失也讲述了另一个重要的故事。它讲述了20世纪50年代和60年代的故事,当时人们希望建立一个更平等的社会,为工人阶级提供廉价的住房)”可知,旧金山很多维多利亚时代的建筑被拆除,是为了腾出土地为工人阶级建造廉价住房。故选B。
31.推理判断题。根据全文内容,结合最后一段“Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying pars of our history — not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.(保护不仅仅是保存漂亮、保存完好的建筑,而是要传达我们的部分历史——不仅仅是重大事件的历史,而是每个人过去如何去某个角落市场的故事。我们的历史不能只用符合某些人审美标准的建筑来讲述;我们的历史有时是痛苦的,但同样重要)”可知,文章主要解释为什么丑陋的建筑值得保存。故作者写这篇文章的目的是强调保存丑陋建筑物的重要性。故选D。

And the sea ice was at a new record low — not just by a little bit, but by a lot.

It’s hard to picture such a large area, but it’s around 1.6 times the size of France.
由倒数第二段中Ted Scambos说的话“Antarctica’s ice levels have always changed some, but the situation this year is pointing towards warmer ocean conditions around the area.”(南极洲的冰平面总是有一些变化,但今年的情况表明,该地区周围的海洋条件更加温暖)”可知,Ted Scambos认为气温上升导致了南极洲的变化。故选B项。
由最后一段中“The sea ice is important, because it helps cool the planet. When it’s frozen, sea ice reflects sunlight back out into space. But when the sea ice melts (融化), the water left behind is darker, and takes in and keeps more heat. (海冰很重要,因为它有助于冷却地球。当海冰结冰时,它会将阳光反射回太空。但当海冰融化时,留下的水会变黑,吸收并保持更多的热量)”可知,海冰对地球有冷却作用,说明南极洲的海冰是地球冷却系统的关键。故选A项。

67.Paragraph 1:
When they tried in vain to rescue the brothers and Tabatha, a risky idea came to them. To keep themselves from losing their footing in the rip current, they began holding on to one another to form a human chain extending from the beach all the way out to the struggling boys and Tabatha. They stayed linked tightly and managed to ensure they were safe by making their feet firmly planted in the sand. However, that required more links — probably dozens of them. Shaun spotted other swimmers on the beach and shouted, “Don’t just stand there! Come and help.”
Paragraph 2:
By then, more swimmers had also noticed the group in trouble and rushed to join the human chain. One by one, link by link, total strangers walked into the waves and grasped one another by the wrists, determined that no one would die on that beach. At last, they made it and Tabatha and the two brothers were saved! “Those people on the beach are angels on earth,” said Roberta, showing her appreciation. Whether it is the first person or the last person in the chain, they are all our heroes, who helped get our family out of trouble.
