Have you ever stayed in a hotel Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable (一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers.
Many guests like the idea because they don’t have to bring their own. But, if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring your own things. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less disposable things.
Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of natural resources (资源) and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.
Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen (食堂), use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
24. Why do many hotels provide guests with some disposable things
A. Let their guests be convenient during their travelling.
B. Hope their guests use less disposable things.
C. Wish their guests to save money.
D. Want their guests to use more disposable things.

Nowadays, with the popularity of modern traffic and modern communication means, our world is becoming much smaller. Thus our life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but meanwhile it has brought new problems, the biggest one of which is pollution. For a long time ever since, man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution.
To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time.
32. What is the reason for the world to become much smaller
A. The rise in pollution.
B. Science and technology development.
C. The earth is being polluted day and night.
D. The earth is blown away by the wind every year.
33. What kind of pollution is it when we “even hear it”
A. Air pollution. B. Rubbish pollution.
C. Noise pollution. D. Water pollution.
34. Why is air pollution the most serious pollution
A. It makes much noise. B. It makes us angry more easily.
C. It makes our rivers and lakes dirty. D. It’s bad for all living things in the world.
35. What is the writer’s attitude toward stopping pollution
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

People love to sing! Whether you sing in the shower or with a chorus, raising your voice in song comes with some very surprising benefits. From improving your mood to making you healthier, there is scientific evidence that singing is good for your body and your mind. 36
It helps relieve stress.
Singing can help relieve stress by reducing cortisol (皮质醇), a hormone that is known as the “stress hormone”. It is naturally produced by your body. 37 A study measured the amount of cortisol in the participants before and after singing. The researchers found that cortisol levels were lower after singing.
38
People who sing use deep breathing and control the use of the muscles in their breathing systems. While singing cannot treat lung diseases, anything that helps to strengthen the throat muscles could help people breathe easier.
It helps you have a sound sleep.
If your sleep is interrupted by snoring (打鼾), try singing. 39 A 2008 UK study about the effect of singing on snoring compared singers with non-singers. The researchers found that far fewer singers snored, and they recommend singing as a potential treatment for snoring.
It may improve memory.
40 A study found that besides remembering the lyrics (歌词), singing brought back other memories too. The researchers found that singing songs that were learned in childhood actually caused a return of very specific memories and that gave the participants a feeling of hope and positivity.
A. It helps improve mood.
B. It may improve lung function.
C. So go ahead and sing to your heart’s content.
D. Too much cortisol is very bad for your health.

To mark their hard work and contribution to wildlife protection in the reserve, last year, Shi’s 20-member team was recognized with a special award at an online award ceremony for the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas’ International Ranger Awards.
Kathy MacKinnon, head of the commission, speaks highly of their work, saying that they are “critical to our global conservation efforts, helping to stem (阻止) biodiversity loss and protect the important ecosystems that serve as natural solutions to climate change and other global challenges”.
Shi realizes that through protecting endangered animals, like giant pandas and snow leopards, the rich biodiversity of the environment can also be maintained, which is a win-win situation.
After graduation from Sichuan Forestry School (now Sichuan Agricultural University) in 1992, Shi became a forest guardian (守护者) at the Wolong National Nature Reserve.
Established in 1963, Wolong is the country’s earliest panda reserve. It experienced serious human-animal conflict, such as illegal logging (伐木) and hunting before the 1990s. In 1978, an observation tent, claimed to be the country’s first field camp to study wild giant pandas, was built on a steep forested slope in the reserve.
In the early 1980s, the government cooperated with the World Wide Fund for Nature to establish the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda to save the endangered animal.
At the very beginning, it was really difficult for rangers (护林员). With no proper outdoor equipment, like protective jackets or sleeping bags, every time, going around the area could be a life-threatening (危及生命的) adventure. Plastic woven bags were commonly used for warmth and as makeshift (临时的) tents for emergency cases. For Shi, the real challenges are natural disasters, which cannot be predicted.

Dear Friends,
Faced with the environmental problem caused by plastic bottles in our school, we are writing this letter to raise your awareness of the need to protect our school. You can help simply by participating in the No Plastic Water Bottles campaign.
Firstly, you are supposed to carry your water in a reusable bottle. In this way, you don’t need to buy bottled water. Besides, if you have to purchase a plastic bottled beverage, recycle the bottle after use. What’s more, you can persuade your family members and friends to get involved in this campaign.
Everyone is responsible for making our school cleaner and better by doing what we can. Let’s start NOW.

读后续写
He has a vivid memory of a snowslide in June 2017 during a routine inspection. “We were about to climb over a 400-meter-long mountain pass, about 5,500 meters in altitude, which was the most dangerous place for us with snow depth on the ground reaching up to two meters and the wind blowing heavily,” Shi says. Suddenly Shi heard thundering sounds and a mass of snow came tumbling down the mountain. Quickly throwing himself at the rock and grabbing onto it, Shi survived but was injured.
There is a lot of hard work involved in protecting wildlife, but there are also some surprises from the job. Shi has a soft spot for giant pandas. Although he has patrolled the reserve for three decades, he has only met the pandas twice. In order to record videos of the wild giant pandas in the reserve, they searched for them for several days in the forest, but didn’t spot one. When they were about to give up, there was a sound from the bamboo forest behind, and they turned around and saw a fat panda about six meters away, hiding in the woods. It ran quickly. It was funny to see a group of people chasing the panda in the wild. The scene is just like hide-and-seek which will never be forgotten.

Text 10
The most wonderful experience I’ve ever had was a trip I took to China a few years ago. I really can’t describe it. We spent three weeks travelling around China. We visited Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an and several other places. It was the most unusual holiday I’ve ever had. You know, the further we travelled into the center of China, the more I liked it, meeting people who’d never seen foreign tourists before. Then we spent our last week in Hong Kong, which I think is very different from Beijing. It’s the noisiest and busiest place I’ve ever seen. We didn’t find Hong Kong very relaxing at all. And the other problem was the people on tour with us—they were so unfriendly. Anyway, the trip was interesting. I can’t wait to do it again!
