More than 100 podcasts(播客)this year in NPR's Student Podcast Challenge have touched on a topic that's increasingly important to young people: climate change. Here are four student podcasts that show the minds of students and what they have to say about climate- related news in their communities—and what they hope to do about it.
Behind the Scenes of the Mosquito Fire
A sixth-grade class at the Georgetown School of Innovation in Georgetown, Calif., shares stories from the devastating(毁灭性的)Mosquito Fire in 2022. This group of eight students asks two firefighters what it's like to fight fires and protect loved ones in their hometown.
Fires: Set Ablaze
At Chautauqua Elementary, the Vashon fifth-graders talk about the far-reaching and lasting impact of wildfires and wildfire smoke—and the direct effects on their lives, like waiting for the school bus on a smoky day. The students also interview experts and share their research on wildfire precautions(防范).
Flowing Through Time
In this podcast from Peak Academy, a group of eight middle schoolers reports on dealing with water shortages in Bozeman, Montana. They track the history of their growing hometown's water supply, which has been dependent on mountain snowmelt. As that source becomes less reliable in a warming world, the students turn to the grown-ups to ask what they can do to conserve water.
Washed Away
The deadly flooding in eastern Kentucky last year forever changed the lives of high schoolers Ryley Bowman, Carolina Johnson and Hunter Noble. The three classmates at Morgan County High School in West Liberty, Ky., share firsthand accounts of their own and their family's experiences during the floods.

Coco Gauff won the U.S. Open women's title in 2023. Gauff became only the third American teenager to win the national women's title four years after she rose to fame in the sport by beating Venus Williams, one of her childhood idols, at the Wimbledon Championships when Gaff was just 15 years old.
When Gauff was barely school age she held a tennis racket(球拍)and told her parents that she wanted to be the best player in the world. By the time Gauff was seven, she was training with a tennis professional two hours a day, several days a week. Her father suggested that the family move from Atlanta to Delray Beach, Florida, home to some of the best tennis training camps in the world. At 13, Gauff was the youngest U.S. Open junior girls finalist in history; at 14, she became one of the youngest winners of the French Open junior girls tournament.
The win against Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon was a bit of a dreamy moment for both players. Gauff was 15; Williams was 39. Gauff beat Williams in straight sets in a stunning upset. When the competitors met at the net for the traditional handshake, Gauff tried to make the moment special. "I was just telling her thank you for everything she's done for the sport," Gauff said at the time.
Despite her age, Gauff demonstrated skills that both set her apart and made her worthy of being mentioned with other tennis genius, including Tracy Austin, Jennifer Capriati, and Andrea Jaeger. Yet her professional career has not been without its setbacks. Since beating Williams in the first round at Wimbledon, she has found herself knocked out in the first round at the 2022 Australian Open and at Wimbledon in 2023. Still, Gauff has shown consistent improvement in her game on the world stage.
24. Why did Gauff's family move to Delray Beach
A. For comfortable life. B. For stronger competitors.
C. For better training. D. For further education.
25. How did she make the moment of handshake special
A. By saying thanks. B. By exchanging rackets.
C. By overcoming upset. D. By asking for instructions.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Gauff
A. Friendly and outgoing. B. Selfless and determined.
C. Caring and competitive. D. Hardworking and talented.
27. In which section of the magazine can you see the text
A. Friendship. B. Sport. C. Health. D. Culture.

In a 2012 study, Boaz Keysar, a professor at the University of Chicago in the US, led an experiment on the relationship between foreign languages and people's way of thinking.
In the experiment, people were asked to make a choice: Just take one pound or take a 50 percent chance of winning 2.50 pounds. When given this choice in their native language, most people took the safe option of only getting one pound. But they were more willing to make the riskier choice when asked in a foreign language, leading to more profits overall, according to The Guardian. As Keysar put it, "People just hate the chance of losing, but they hate it less in a foreign language."
In another study published this year, Keysar and his team did an experiment in which participants were given a series of related words like "dream", "snooze", "bed" and "rest". Later, when asked which words they remembered hearing, people were more likely to mistakenly remember "sleep", which was not on the list, in their native language. But it was much less likely to happen if they did the test in a foreign language. As Keysar explained, people have more careful thinking when using a foreign language, leading to more accurate memories.
The foreign language effect may even influence our personality. Silvia Purpuri at the University of Trento, Italy, looked at people's willingness to face uncertainty and enter unfamiliar situations. Being tolerant(宽容的)of uncertainty allows people to have more creative ideas and be more open to new things. It turns out that people naturally score more highly on this trait(特点)when they can speak or use a foreign language because speaking a foreign language requires taking risks.
The evidence is clear: By learning a foreign language, you're not just learning a language —you're gaining a new state of mind.
28. What does the first experiment suggest
A. People like expressing in a foreign language.
B. People are afraid of losing in face of money.
C. People make quick choices in their native language.
D. People prefer riskier decisions in a foreign language.
29. Which of the following best explains "accurate" underlined in paragraph 3
A. Colorful. B. Simple. C. Usual. D. Exact.
30. Willingness to face uncertainty makes people__________.
A. Cool-headed. B. Open-minded.
C. Light-hearted. D. Easy-going.
31. What is the main idea of this text
A. Learning foreign languages helps a lot.
B. People should learn to face uncertainty.
C. Foreign languages influence how people think.
D. Personality has an effect on language learning.

This year, the social-studies teacher in San Marino, California, plans to let his helper explain some simple topics to his high schoolers. This will free up time for Paccone to focus on more difficult tasks. His new assistant is ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is a chatbot, created by OpenAI. Earlier this year, the company's website became one of the world's 50 most-visited. When asked a question online, the chatbot will produce an answer that reads like an essay. It is a large language model. This type of model learns to predict what words will come next in a sentence or phrase by looking through vast amounts of text. It places words and phrases into a 3-D map that represents their relationships to each other. Words that tend to appear together, like peanut butter and jelly, end up closer together in this map.
ChatGPT marks the beginning of a new wave of AI that will disturb education. Whether that's a good or bad thing remains to be seen. Some school areas have banned ChatGPT. Teachers are frightened because they see it as a cheating tool. Randi Weingarte, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, says it is to English and to writing what the calculator(计算器)is to math." But some experts argue that ChatGPT could also be a great help. Like calculators for math or Google for facts, an AI chatbot makes something that once took time and effort much simpler and faster. With this tool, anyone can generate well-formed sentences and paragraphs. In the course, writing skills are developed.
Now that AI can produce essays, stories and so on, teachers may once again have to rethink how they teach and test. Preventing students from using AI by making students work without access to technology or inviting AI into the writing process We might have to shift our point of view about what's cheating and what isn't.
32. Why is Paccone mentioned
A. To give the background. B. To raise a question.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To show an opinion.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about ChatGPT
A. Its wide popularity. B. Its way of working.
C. Its style of writing. D. Its possible users.
34. What is. Randi Weingarte's attitude to ChatGPT
A. Supportive. B. Concerned.
C. Confident. D. Uncertain.
35. What is the best title of this text
A. ChatGPT—Friend or Enemy B. ChatGPT—Necessity or Choice
C. AI—A New Challenge D. AI—A Great Assistant

Kids and teenagers who volunteer aren't just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. 36 It found that volunteering through school or community groups is connected with better wellness among children and teens.
Kids who participated in community service were 34% more likely to be in good physical health than those who didn't, the study found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered doing well in general. Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety than those who didn't. The findings come from survey data(数据)provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States ages 6 to 17. 37
Studies like this have limitations. Parents answered questions about their kids' health and community-service activity. But a parent might not know if their child experiences anxiety or considers themselves to be flourishing(健康的). 38 It can only uncover connection. So it's impossible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health.
39 In recent years, rates of depression and anxiety have risen among young people. So there's a clear need for accessible and effective mental health resources(资源). Giving back to the community may be one such resource.
Previous research has also found links between volunteering and well-being among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. 40 Generosity has also been shown to boost happiness and improve physical health. It might be a practice worth cultivating(培养).
A. This type of data also can't prove cause and effect.
B. Most of the kids showed great interest in the survey.
C. And it makes them feel connected to those around them.
D. But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health.
E. About half of those parents reported that their kids did volunteer work.
F. That's according to a new research published in JAMA Network Open, in May.
G. Volunteering means developing new skills, sharing love, and making new friends.

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a small village. The village was located in the heart of a big jungle(丛林). Surrounded by the high mountains and in the shade of green trees, the villagers happily lived a life of happiness.
All of them were used to their robotic daily tasks and none of them had the imagination or the will to try something new, except for one girl named Hannah. Very few people in the village could read, let alone write, and Hannah was one of them. Her parents had made sure that their only child got everything possible.
Hannah was an adventurous spirit with an imagination far beyond her time. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the woods looking for new things. She loved to create stories in her head and used to imagine herself as one of her characters. Sometimes, she even told stories to her friends, adding her own touch of curiosity every now and then to different stories, making them more interesting. She wanted to inspire the sparks of curiosity and imagination in them.
One afternoon, when Hannah was on one of her adventurous searches, she came upon an abandoned cottage(遗弃的小屋). The cottage looked very old in its condition. The door was hardly hanging and the wood was about to break apart into pieces. Even though Hannah's mother had strictly warned her not to go wandering in abandoned places, her curiosity drove her to approach it.
