As a child, Cesare became interested in electronics. He loved to experiment. He learned to program computers and equipment like the Arduino and Raspberry Pi. He also worked with a 3D printer. After seeing a video about someone building a fusion reactor (核聚变反应堆), Cesare decided he would do something meaningful, too. The school wasn’t so excited about the idea. But Cesare worked to persuade his teachers. Finally, after a complete safety review, and with an extra advisor offering to help out, the school agreed.Cesare was a strong student, but his regular classes weren’t teaching him how to build a fusion reactor. To learn this, he spent countless hours doing research, looking up information on the Internet, and watching videos. He would read, watch 10 or 15 videos, and then try to solve the problem. He also visited a website where he got advice from scientists with more experience.Step by step, working long hours with his physics teacher and his advisor, Cesare built the reactor. Last June, at the very end of the school year, the reactor was finished. Over a year has passed since then. Cesare has continued to improve the reactor. He has built complicated equipment to control the pressure and to better see and understand what’s going on inside the reactor. He’s one of the youngest students to have built such an advanced fusion reactor. But for Cesare, it wasn’t just about the reactor. It was also about learning by doing, and about making connections with other people doing similar things. College is the next stop for Cesare-perhaps in England, perhaps in Italy. No matter where he goes, he’ll probably continue to change people’s ideas about how much young people can achieve.24. Videos Act as a TeacherCWe know that fruits can help to keep our bodies healthy. According to a new study, eating fruits in middle age could also help to reduce the chances of developing depression (抑郁) later in life though we should pay attention to the amount of fruits we eat.Researchers from China and Singapore wanted to find out more about whether eating fruits and vegetables could have an effect on our mental health. They looked at more than 13, 700 Chinese adults who were living in Singapore. The study period began between 1993 and 1998 when the Chinese adults were aged between 45 and 74. Everyone was asked about the fruits and vegetables they liked to eat, 14 fruits and 25 types of vegetables were included in the questionnaire (问卷).The Chinese adults were followed for an average of almost 20 years. By this time, they were aged between 61 and 96. They were asked to complete a questionnaire that could decide whether older people develop depression. At the end of the study period, almost 3,200 people had the feeling of depression. The researchers found that higher consumption of fruits during middle age was connected with a lower probability of developing depression in late life. Those who ate the most fruits were 29% less likely to develop depression compared to those who ate the least. However. they didn’t find any connection between eating vegetables and developing depression. It was suggested that the reason for this may be that fruits are usually eaten raw, while vegetables are often cooked. Cooking vegetables might limit the “protective effects” of the nutrients (营养物) in the foods, the researchers suggested, although they said more research was needed. All types of fruits were found to have an effect, especially oranges, bananas, papayas and watermelons.28. How is the study conducted A. By comparing fruits to vegetables. B. By filling in the questionnaire in a lab.C. By talking with people living in China. D. By tracking the subjects for a long time.29. What does the underlined word “consumption” in paragraph 4 probably mean A. Contact. B. Eating. C. Advancement. D. Concentration.30. What do we know about the influence of vegetables on depression A. Researchers have got no proof. B. They prove to be better than fruits.C. They are the key to treating depression. D. Cooking them surely influences mental health.31. What might be talked about in the following paragraph A. Why fruits could decrease depression. B. The correct methods of cooking vegetables.C. Different fruits recommended by the doctor. D. How vegetables damage nutrients in the foods.DHeat waves don’t just make bumblebees (大黄蜂) hot. High temperatures also seem to seriously reduce their sense of smell, which can be very bad for their survival. For bumblebees, being able to smell flowers is a matter of life or death because it helps them find food.Bumblebees are already known to suffer from climate change. So, an insect ecologist from the University of Wurzburg in Germany and her team wanted to understand if heat waves could influence bumblebees’ ability to smell flowers. The researchers put around 190 bumblebees from two common species into small special rooms for almost three hours at temperatures of 40C to simulate (模拟) heat waves. Some bumblebees were also put in a dry environment; some had ways to sugary resources; some were given time to recover at normal temperatures for 24 hours after the heat treatment. After the simulated heat waves, the researchers cut of the bumblebees’ antennae (触须), which they use to smell, and measured whether the olfactory sensory neurons (the cells that help them smell) in the antennae could still detect flower scents. The heat waves reduced the bumblebees’ ability to smell by up to 80 percent. Worker bumblebees, which are all female, were more affected than male bumblebees. Even worse, the antennae of the bumblebees that had 24 hours to cool of still didn’t recover their sense of smell after that time. “That was surprising,” said the insect ecologist. This suggests the bumblebees don’t recover quickly, which means they might have trouble finding food. “It could be one reason why we see so many bumblebee’s population drops,” she added, along with other factors like habitat loss.“The study seems pretty reliable,” said a bumblebee ecologist from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, who didn’t take part in the study. “The antennae are quite similar across be species,” he added. “If bumblebees suffer in this way, I think it’s probable that other bees would too. But we won’t know for sure until someone does research on it.”32. What problem might bumblebees face in the end because of heat waves A. Habitat loss. B. Death risk. C. Food shortage. D. Sensory failure.33. Why were some bumblebees given 24 hours to recover after the treatment A. To count their number and species. B. To prevent the researchers making mistakes.C. To make sure they can adapt to the environment. D. To prove if hot waves damage their sense of smell.34. What does the insect ecologist think of the research result A. It leads to a good method. B. It goes beyond her control.C. It limits the scientific research. D. It takes researchers’ doubts away.35. What can we learn about other bees according to the bumblebee ecologist A. There is still a lot to study. B. They will suffer from deathC. They will be well protected. D. More researchers are studying them.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。You want to learn, you want to listen to your teacher, and you want to absorb all of that information in class. In my early memories, I watched my parents work hard day and night. Their tireless efforts proved their love for our family and the land. One spring evening, as my father was guiding a tractor (拖拉机) across the field to sow the seeds (播种), the front light suddenly went out, making it hard for us to go on working. My father set off on a long journey to buy a new light. The cold wind blew, but it didn’t weaken his determination to finish the task. “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. When we meet difficulties, we should find ways to solve them,” he said. With my mother’s support, we replaced the light together and continued working. Then the tractor’s warm light and my father’s determination became guiding lights for me.Decades passed, and my parents grew old. They still lived in a house on the farm. Later, I started a family and took over the farm. I often told Peter, my son, who was a painter, about the importance of hard work and determination. One day, Peter visited me. He told me about the challenges of being a painter, like needing to find inspiration regularly. Recently, he hadn’t found any new ideas and was considering giving up. Silently, I led him to the place where the tractor stood. I pointed to the big tree next to the tractor, a reminder of the past. “That tree was very young when your grandparents planted it the day after we fixed the light,” I said. I shared the story with him proudly.Peter looked at the tractor and the tree, saying, “I can see you from decades ago, a little boy, learning determination and love on this land.” He smiled and said he would stick to his painting career. Only then did I realize I should personally thank my parents for their education, which also benefited my son.注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Just then, my parents walked out of the house.
