Anantawan was born without most of his right forearm. The disability was a greatest impediment to music when, in fifth grade, he said his music teacher wanted all the students to learn to play the recorder (竖笛).
Instead of giving up, Anantawan and his parents decided to find him a different instrument to explore his musical talent. “My family chose the violin because they thought it was the most beautiful instrument,” Anantawan said. They contacted the Toronto-area hospital near the family, asking them to create an adaptive cast (石膏) on his arm that would allow the then 10-year-old to hold the bow.
A group of engineers worked alongside Anantawan to build a special device. With it, Anantawan could use the bow and use his shoulder to make the sound. “From the very first note that I was playing, I was really attracted to the sound and the connection of my body to the instrument and being able to express my imagination,” he said.
Although Anantawan is grateful for the technology that allows him and others with disabilities to find access to music, he said the most important part of access is that teachers, supporters and those who encourage young learners or musicians by telling them they can do anything are able to accept diversity.
Anantawan is working to provide that space for others. As an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music, Anantawan founded the Music Inclusion Ensemble, a group of students with disabilities that provide accommodations for musicians according to their needs. Anantawan hopes to inspire people without being defined only by the challenges they face as a result of their disability.
24. What does the underlined word “impediment” mean in paragraph 1
A. Possibility. B. Barrier. C. Achievement. D. Regret.
25. Why did Anantawan’s family get in touch with the hospital
A. To find a man-made hand for him. B. To inspire him to learn to play the recorder.
C. To put forward suggestions on adapting a violin. D. To add something extra to assist his right arm.
26. What does Anantawan think is the key to the disabled’s access to music
A. Inclusive atmosphere. B. Fair competitions. C. Enough resources. D. Lasting cooperation.
27. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Why Anantawan becomes active. B. Who Anantawan plays music with.
C. How Anantawan lives in his free time. D. What Anantawan contributes his time to.

Sometimes to go forward you must look backwards. Wind-powered ships have been used since ancient times, ever since the invention of the sail. With the coming of fuel (燃料) - powered ships, however, the sail fell out of favor as a practical way to move large boats and ships across the ocean. Now, sails are making a comeback as a way to lower the carbon emissions (碳排放) produced by the fuel-powered shipping industry.
Shipping is not an environmentally friendly industry. In fact, the industry is responsible for about three percent of global emissions. Luckily, the leading figures in the industry have made a commitment to become planet-warming gasses net zero by 2050. This is where the Pyxis Ocean comes in.
The Pyxis Ocean is a ship with two “WindWings”, which was designed by a British company. The ship made its first journey crossing the ocean from China to Brazil in 2023.
But the “WindWings” are not quite sails. Standing up to 37 meters tall, they are designed using the same type of aerodynamic (空气动力学的) principles that make it possible for an aircraft to fly. When not being used, the sails fold down onto the ship’s deck. It is estimated that the wings will save around 3 tons of fuel a day. That is a lot of fuel.
With new, cleaner fuels still in the works, these partial measures to reduce carbon emissions are a godsend. “Ultimately we do need zero-carbon fuels on all ships, but in the meantime, it is necessary to make every journey as efficient as possible,” Dr Simon Bullock, a shipping researcher, said.
Luckily, wind-powered technology is gaining recognition. About 100 out of every 110,000 new-build ships are being built using some sort of wind technology. And that doesn’t take into account ships like the Pyris Ocean which have been, or will be transformed with sails, kites, or other types of wind-powered mechanisms.
28. What does the comeback of the wind-powered technology indicate
A. The whole world is faced with an energy crisis.
B. Sustainable development has become a global trend.
C. The solutions to modern problems may lie in the past.
D. The shipping industry is determined to turn away from fuels.
29. What is the main purpose of the “WindWings” on the Pyris Ocean
A. To reduce the ship’s carbon emissions. B. To provide entertainment for the sailors.
C. To serve as a backup power source. D. To increase the speed of the ship.
30. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Wind power is playing a major role in the shipping industry.
B. The wind-powered technology is reliable and promising.
C. Fuel-powered ships will soon be replaced by wind-powered ones.
D. Technology innovation is key to addressing environmental issues.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. New Ship Sailing into the Future B. Traditional Shipping Taking the Stage
C. The Pyxis Ocean: New Hope for the Earth D. “WindWings”: a Return to Ancient Shipping Wisdom
D
Researchers have found evidence that artificiAI intelligence (AI) models would rather lie than admit the shame of not knowing something.
A new study published in Nature found that the bigger LLMs (大型语言模型) get, the less reliable they become for specific tasks. They tend to reply with confidence even if the answer is not really correct, because they are trained to believe it is. “LLMs are going far beyond their knowledge base to provide responses,” the study noted.
Researchers found that this phenomenon is not because bigger LLMs are not capable of handling simple tasks, but instead they are trained to be more skilled at complex (复杂的) tasks. It’s like a person who’s used to eating only fancy meals suddenly struggling to make a home barbecue or a traditional cake. AI models trained on vast, complex datasets are more likely to miss fundamental skills.
The issue is worsened by the models’ apparent confidence. Users often find it challenging to tell when AI is providing accurate information and when it’s confidently giving misinformation. This overconfidence can lead to dangerous overreliance on AI outputs, particularly in critical fields like healthcare or legal advice.
According to the study, techniques like reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF), intended to shape AI behavior, may actually be adding to the problem. These approaches appear to be reducing the models’ tendency to avoid tasks they’re not equipped to handle-remember the infamous “as an AI Language Model, I cannot” - unintentionally encouraging more frequent errors.
Human oversight, long considered a safeguard against AI mistakes, may not be sufficient to address these issues. The study found that users often struggle to correct incorrect model outputs, even in relatively simple fields, so relying on human judgment may not be the ultimate solution for proper model training.
The study’s findings call into question the current tendency of AI development. While the push for larger, more capable models continues, this research suggests that bigger isn’t always better when it comes to AI reliability.
32. How may LLMs react when not knowing something
A. They admit their ignorance. B. They refuse to give answers.
C. They turn to experts for assistance. D. They reply confidently but offer false answers
33. What has led to AI telling lies according to the study
A. Mistakes in data analysis. B. Inability to handle specific tasks.
C. Unawareness of its own ignorance. D. Lack of proper human monitoring.
34. What is the function of the example mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To show the limitations of AI training methods B. To prove LLMs are similar to humans.
C. To demonstrate LLMs are poor at simple tasks. D. To imply LLMs should be applied to complex tasks
35. What’s the author’s attitude towards where AI is heading
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Unclear.

Comparing yourself to others sometimes negatively (消极地) impacts how you feel about yourself, here are four strategies to help you change this.
Recognise comparing is a habit
From the early days of our schooling, we become aware that our grades are the same, similar to, or different from our peers. 36 . When we identify something as a habit and are honest about its impact on our self-esteem (自尊) and mental health, we are in a much better position to change it.
Manage your inner critic (批评者)
When you don’t feel good enough compared to others, it is easy to fall into self-criticism and self-judgment. One way to deal with this is to adopt a mindset of managing your inner critic. 37 . You do not need to engage with it or believe everything it says about you.
Broaden your view of yourself
38 . Your focus on your weaknesses, imperfections, and your limitations become centred on. When our attention is narrowed this way, we tend to discount other information that might challenge this negative view of ourselves. For example, winning a prize may be discounted as luck rather than ability. Therefore, broadening your view of yourself is essential. 39 .
Organize and limit your social media
Like social comparison, using social media is an automatic habit. For example, we scroll (滚屏) waiting in a queue, on the bus, on our lunch breaks. 40 . But if social media tends to cause social comparison for you, start limiting your time on it. In addition, organize your feed so that the posts you are exposed to positively impact your well-being and mental health.
A. This habit can bring about perfect effects
B. Then a sense of competition can quickly develop
C. Notice when it shows up and stay away from it
D. And it has been a common part of our daily life
E. It helps you move to a more balanced view of yourself
F. We can’t avoid comparing with others in various social surroundings
G. Being stuck in constant unhelpful comparisons makes you feel “less than”.

As her 18th birthday approached. Victoria eagerly anticipated the celebration of her coming of age. Her parents had promised to host a grand party in their garden, inviting friends, family, and teachers to witness this milestone in her life. They even planned to have her favorite band perform live, making the event truly unforgettable.
However, fate had a different plan for Victoria. Just two months before the big day. Victoria fell seriously ill with a persistent high fever. After several tests, she was diagnosed with acute leukemia (急性白血病) and had to be hospitalized immediately for further treatment. Victoria’s condition was unstable, causing huge stress to her parents, who tirelessly cared for her and struggled to find funds for her high medical bills.
In those dark days. Victoria felt utterly upset, believing her dream of an 18th birthday celebration was now an impossible fantasy. The pain and exhaustion from the treatments were overwhelming, and she often found herself feeling hopeless, wondering if she would ever get better. The thought of missing her birthday party added to her despair, making each day feel even longer.
On the morning of her birthday, as Victoria lay in her hospital bed, feeling the weight of her illness, her parents arrived to take her for a medical checkup. They gently pushed her wheelchair through the hospital corridors, their faces lined with worry and fatigue. “We’re so sorry, sweetheart,” her mother said, her voice trembling. “We know how much you were looking forward to your party. We couldn’t make it happen.” Her father squeezed her hand and added, “We just want you to get better. That’s all that matters right now.”
Although Victoria was disappointed, she managed to smile and reassure them that it was okay. “I understand,” she said softly, trying to mask the pain and sadness she felt. “I’m just glad you’re here with me.” Their presence was a comfort, even if it couldn’t erase her disappointment. After the checkup, they returned to the hospital room.

W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club-we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages-you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday-Spanish; Tuesday-Italian; Wednesday-German; and Friday-French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.

(Text 10)
W: Hey, friends! I’ve missed you. Let me tell you about my trip to Mexico this summer. It was the first time that I had left the United States and traveled to a foreign country. I learned useful traveling tips and had an exciting time in a different culture. The first and most important thing I learned was to make sure to apply for a passport months in advance. I got mine right before I was scheduled to leave, because I waited until the last minute! Secondly, if you are flying, be sure to book a plane ticket far ahead of time so you can get a fair price. Thirdly, my another travel tip is to be sure you pack lightly. You will be taking that luggage around with you everywhere, and it gets heavy quickly! Last but not least, I had some great times exploring the local culture. I was trying all the new kinds of food and went to special cultural events, like special dance performances and street festivals. If you follow these tips, I think you’ll have an easy and rewarding experience!

Getting to Know Folk Music
Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the local Folk Song Festival, an event that offered a deep insight into the rich traditional music. The festival featured a variety of performances, with local artists singing songs that reflected the history and culture of our region. Each song was a story, giving a window into the hearts and lives of the people.
I was particularly moved by the emotional depth of the songs, which spoke of love, the beauty of nature and so on. It made me appreciate the value of preserving our musical heritage.

As the door swung open, Victoria was greeted with an unexpected sight. The room was transformed with colorful balloons and a big banner that read, “Happy 18th Birthday!” Victoria’s friends, family members, and teachers, all wearing bright smiles, stood around her bed. She could hardly believe her eyes. Tears of joy filled her eyes as Victoria saw the effort and love they had poured into this surprise. Her favorite band was there too, setting up their instruments. When they began to play Victoria’s favorite song, the room was filled with music, laughter, and warmth. At that moment, Victoria felt a spark of hope within her.
The surprise birthday party offered Victoria the courage to face her illness head-on. Their presence and support reminded her that she wasn’t alone in this battle. The joy and love she experienced that day became her support in the difficult times that followed. With their support, she embraced each treatment with newfound strength. Gradually, Victoria began to see progress, and eventually, she won in the fight against acute leukemia. Victoria’s 18th birthday, celebrated in that hospital room, became a symbol of hope, love, and the wonderful power of community.
