When I was in my early 20s, I first discovered the poem Desiderata. It was a grey rainy weekend in a shop in Australia. On the wall was a poster (海报) with a text, and the first two words were "Go placidly (平静地)".
Curious, I stepped up to the poster. My eyes were drawn to the poem: Go placidly amid the noise and haste (匆忙), and remember what peace there may be in silence…Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others.
Desiderata is a 1920s poem by the almost-forgotten American poet Max Ehrmann. It's basically an instruction on how to live a happy life. It first caught public attention 20 years after Ehrmann's death in the 1960s, when peace and love suddenly seemed quite attractive. By the 1970s copies of the text hung in classrooms and living rooms all over America. However, most people today don't know the poem anymore.
I have several poems memorized and they have been a great help in their own different ways. But Desiderata still seems the most helpful one. Go placidly through life. Not gently or quietly, but with calm and confidence, even when in the middle of "noise and haste". And I don't know if you've looked out the window recently, but there's an awful lot of noise and haste going around.
It has been more than 10 years since I first read Desiderata. I'm a little older, none the wiser. I now have a two-year-old kid, which means our house is usually like a space in a war. But among the tears and the painful joy of parenthood, I think of those words-go placidly-and I can almost feel my blood pressure dropping. It's like a cool light wind on a hot day, and tells me that the solution to chaos isn't necessarily order-its attitude (态度).
24. What do we know about the poem Desiderata
A. It was written for students.
B. Its message has changed over time.
C. Its aim was to cheer up people in the 1960s.
D. There has been a rise and a drop in its popularity.
25. How does the poem Desiderata benefit the author
A. It helps him to build up confidence. B. It teaches him how to act in chaos.
C. It made him treasure life more. D. It interested him in reading.
26. How is the author's life as a new parent
A. His house is most often in a mess. B. Looking after a kid makes him wiser.
C. Parenting brings him more pain than joy. D. He feels perfectly content with his family.
27. What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To show us how to live a peaceful life. B. To tell us a poem's influence on him.
C. To encourage us to read poems. D. To explain why he likes poems.

Nearly 1 in 10 adolescent girls have used non-prescription (非处方类的) pills to lose weight, according to new research. The research noted that teenage girls are the most likely group to have used these so-called weight loss aids, and pointed out that these trends-and the mindset driving them-raise the risks for eating disorders and overall harm to physical and mental health.
Nichole Kelly, a scientist who specializes in eating behaviors and body image beliefs, said that adolescence is a particularly vulnerable time for young people seeking out weight loss measures. Girls are going through adolescence (青春期), which means increases in fat mass in girls' bodies. This age is also marked by an increase in the importance of the opinion of peers, which are often really cruel towards bigger bodies. Weight and appearance are the top reasons kids are bullied (霸凌) at school. So it's not surprising that there are high levels of weight loss supplement (补充剂) use in adolescents and in girls in particular.
The role of social media is especially crucial in understanding how young people are understanding their bodies. "If you open up any social media platform and do any sort of quick search for content related to weight loss or related to health and wellness, you'll very quickly come across advertisements for weight loss supplements," Kelly said. "I think that the weight loss supplement industry has really taken advantage of the way that social media allow content and posts to be spread so quickly."
"Most people assume that these products are natural, safe, and effective when the research evidence shows that none of those things are true," Kelly said. She stressed that these products can actively cause harm. The lack of regulation (监管) of the weight loss supplement industry means that some products have dangerous chemical substances.
28. Who are most likely to take weight loss pills according to new research
A. Teenage girls. B. Teenage boys. C. Adult females. D. Adult males.
29. What does the author think of the girls wanting to lose weight
A. They have poor self-respect. B. They are hard to understand.
C. They suffer from peer pressure. D. They are influenced by families.
30. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. Social media spread content quickly.
B. Social media help improve one's body image.
C. Social media are full of weight loss supplement ads.
D. Social media popularize weight loss supplements.
31. What can we learn about weight loss supplements from paragraph 4
A. They are well-regulated.
B. They are free from harmful chemicals.
C. They work as well as prescription drugs.
D. They may be harmful despite being marketed as safe.
D
Sustainable travel is an idea that many experts within the travel industry agree on. To continue enjoying this extraordinary world, both travelers and the travel industry must adapt to be more sustainable in actions. A report reads: "At this important moment in climate history, if there is a lack of actions, by 2040 many of the world's favorite destinations will be forced to go virtual."
What is sustainable travel It is about traveling in a way that reduces negative impact on the climate and environment, as well as the communities and people we visit. For many years, the attention around sustainable travel was based on reducing environmental pollution. While it is still important, there is now an even more pressing issue. With the growth of a privatized (私有化的) market that means local communities aren't benefiting much from tourism as they should, change is needed more than ever.
To deal with the problem, we need to rethink how we see travel. Instead of just focusing on our own experiences, we should consider the needs of our hosts alongside our hopes for a fun-filled holiday. All it takes is a little thoughtful planning.
One of the most effective ways you can make a difference when traveling is to reduce your carbon footprint (碳足迹). Wherever you choose to go, your transport will likely account for the majority of your CO2 emissions. By simple math, that means traveling shorter distances and in a way that uses less fuel (燃料) will make a big difference. And by doing so, you can visit more places and benefit more communities and people.
And traveling out of peak season can be a more enriching experience. You'll avoid the crowds at popular sights and find lower prices for hotels, restaurants and activities. For local people who work in tourism and are seasonal workers, the money they make outside of busy periods is much valued and needed.
Another impactful way to be more sustainable is to stay in community-owned accommodation rather than chain hotels. It means the money you spend goes directly to local people who are serving you and need it most.
32. Why does the author mention the report in paragraph 1
A. To try to describe sustainable travel. B. To point out the main idea of the text.
C. To show the urgency of sustainable travel. D. To present climate change's effect on travel.
33. What does "an even more pressing issue" in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Climate change. B. Environmental pollution.
C. Fast growth of tourism. D. Little attention on locals.
34. What does the author suggest a sustainable traveler do
A. Travel less. B. Choose long trips. C. Make a package tour. D. Try off-season travel.
35. Why are community-owned hotels recommended
A. They provide better service for guests. B. They are friendlier to the environment.
C. They help local people earn more money. D. They are the backbone of the local economy.

National Skip the Straw Day (国家无吸管日) is held on the fourth Friday in February every year in America. It is to remind people to give up straws in their drinks as a way to fight plastic pollution and help the planet. Straws show up on beaches and in waterways around the world. 36
In 2019, volunteers removed nearly a million straws and stirrers (搅拌棒) in a single day's efforts. Since 1986, volunteers have collected nearly 14 million straws and stirrers from beaches and waterways around the world. 37 After all, before 2019, about half-billion straws were used daily in the US-enough to fill 127 school buses, circle the Earth 2.5 times, and weigh as much as 1,000 cars.
38 It's an easy first lift that will have a snowball effect on other areas. When you choose to skip the straw, you begin to think about and realize how so many other single-use plastics are unnecessary. Suddenly, you start to consider using reusable shopping bags and coffee cups. 39 And along the way, collectively, you are having an effect, and showing companies that they need to do better.
If you have not yet given up straws, then this is the year to do so. Use your lips to drink from a glass. Buy a coffee cup that comes with a built-in straw. Explore straws made from paper, bamboo, and glass. 40 But this is one of the easiest ways to protect the environment. Remember, reducing plastic waste includes more than simply straws; it also includes packaging and single-use plastics in daily life.
A. That may seem impossibly high.
B. Avoiding straws may not save the world.
C. It is best to carry a few straws and use them whenever needed.
D. Next, you might look for things that are packaged in reusable boxes.
E. Avoiding straws can get people used to the idea of giving up plastics.
F. The collection numbers are a small part of the number of straws actually being used.
G. They are among the top 10 most common things found during the coastal cleanup event.

Derek Blaise was once a successful businessman. But unluckily, he later lost his company and house. And he became a homeless man, living under a bridge. Derek sometimes begged near the train station. One spring morning, he walked on the street there and noticed two boys, who looked like twins. They were begging for money from the people coming and going.
When seeing him, they walked towards him. "Hello," they said. "Can we have some money to buy food " Derek was shocked; it had been some time since someone asked him for money. "Sorry," he replied. But they didn't move. They looked like they were 11. They watched him with sad eyes.
Derek couldn't stand it; they looked dirty and were clearly making a living on the streets, too. He finally decided to give them all of the coins he had. The money would have covered his lunch that day. But he knew the boys needed it more. So he gave it to them, preparing to starve (挨饿) until he could beg for enough to have food.
He didn't expect the twins would buy some food and return to share it with. him, but they did. "We saw it was the only money you had left. So we would share it with you," the boys told him. "Thank you," he replied sincerely. They reached a corner of the subway and started to eat. Derek saw it as a chance to find out more about the boys. He asked, "What's your story "
"We moved here with our mother Vanessa from another city. But we got separated from her in the crowd and got lost," Tom said. "Have you been begging on the streets since then " Derek asked. "Yes. We didn't call the police because we were afraid that our mom abandoned (抛弃) us. But we stay close to the place we last saw her just in case she comes looking. We live in a basement (地下室) nearby. One possible version:
Tom added, "If you'd like it, please come around." Derek nodded and promised he'd visit them the next day. They parted with happy smiles. When he was far away from the twins, Derek began begging for money. To the end of that day, Derek saved most of the money he got from passers-by. He wanted to buy the twins a cake to cheer them up a bit on their birthday. So he approached a cake shop by the street and looked at the cakes inside.
Derek found on the cake shop's window was a missing-twins poster with a picture of Tom and Sam. Derek was surprised. Using the phone in the shop, Derek contacted the twins' mother, Vanessa. The next day, he met with Vanessa and took her to where the boys were. The mother and the sons hugged and cried happily. Later, after knowing Derek's problem, Vanessa invited him to join them as they returned home. And she helped him get a job. He lived in her home for months as he worked to get back on his feet. You see, kindness never goes unreturned.

W: I just love music festivals. The energy and the crowds- it's an experience like no other.
M: I agree. But festivals nowadays are so crowded that you can only watch the performers on a screen.
W: Even so, it's great to hear the music live.
M: But there are disadvantages, like getting lost in a crowd of people.
W: Yeah. Waiting for food and toilets can also be a problem.
M: Not to mention the sea of mud on rainy days.
