Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing. A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They found that miscommunication was always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks ” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means “yes”.
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today ” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes” or “no”.
28.The Americans teaching English in other countries found that they________
A.had problems with communication
B.needed to learn foreign languages
C.should often discuss their experiences
D.should go abroad for vacations
29.How do people in Micronesia show “yes”
A.By nodding their heads. B.By raising their eyebrows.
C.By shaking their heads. D.By saying “no”.
30.Which of the following is TRUE according to this passage
A.In Bulgaria, nodding heads means “no”.
B.Jan taught English on a Pacific island.
C.Lisa was trying to buy some cabbage.
D.In India, only shaking heads means “yes”.
31.Why did Tom misunderstand his class at first
A.Because he didn’t know where the students came from.
B.Because he didn’t explain anything dearly enough.
C.Because some students didn’t understand his questions.
D.Because he did not know much about Indian culture.
D
When we're in trouble, we always turn to our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or in the lunch queue Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realise just how important social networks are in their lives. This realisation has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them. There's also a certain amount of control over privacy (隐私) that we don't get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (违背) when we must accept a "fiend’s”request from a parent or family member.
It's a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don't want to “refuse” their request(请求) because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel we have something to hide. On the other hand if we do accept, then we could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way we did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn't take it personally if their children overlook (忽略) their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent's friend request, it doesn't necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to be independent.
Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friend list.
32.What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Parents have realised the importance of social networks.
B. Parents feel secure about their privacy online.
C. Social networks successfully fill the generation gap.
D. Social networks offer a chance for parents to communicate.
33.What may be the reason for teenagers to refuse a parents' friend request
A. Their parents make negative comments on them.
B. They hide something from their parents.
C. They are unwilling to be watched by parents.
D. Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.
34.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Online life. B. The difficult choice.
C. Parents' request. D. Teenagers” refusal.
35.What is the passage mainly about
A. Privacy online. B. Parents' friend requests.
C. The generation gap. D. Social networks.

Ask teens and older children to read the notes to younger children who don't read yet.

Many of you may find it hard to make new friends at 56 beginning of your high school. Here are a few suggestions if you want to find people to hang out with.
Firstly, join a club. High schools are filled with 57 (many) clubs than middle schools, and most are always looking 58 new members. You can join more than one organization — you’ll not only meet more people but also learn more about your own interests.
Secondly, be nice. This is an important part of 59 (make) friends! People want to be with friendly peers. Being nice will not only make others feel more comfortable with you but also improve your 60 (confident).
Thirdly, learn to ask questions. People enjoy talking about themselves, so ask questions and let 61 (they) open up. Simple questions before the bell 62 (ring), in the lunchroom, or in P.E. class give you a great chance 63 (get) to know someone. Ask them if they’re new in school, what other classes they’re taking or how they feel about the class you’re in together.
Last but not least, be patient. Friendships aren’t made overnight — it can take months to get to know someone well. But please don’t become 64 (annoy) if you feel like you aren’t making any progress. Be patient, 65 you’ll find your place at school soon enough!

Sadie looked out of the window and sighed (叹气) as she thought about another long, boring day of summer. She wondered what all of her friends from school were doing on their summer vacations. It had to be a lot better than looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. They built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, and even tried surfing. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city far away from Sadie’s.
Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always had funny ideas. Maybe they could ride their bikes together around the park. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. She didn’t really want to watch television, so she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.
After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered(漫步) into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out (闲逛)with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden. You could even finish that story about our camping trip,” said Mom.
“I don’t want to do those things by myself. I want to play with a friend.” “Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet spot to read. Why not have a try ”
Sadie thought about her mom’s words and returned to her room.

You're the best!” Mr Jackson hugged her back, feeling the warmth and a sense of satisfaction in his heart. He had made a difference to Emily's life, and that was all that mattered to him.
