Juleus Ghunta is a published children’s author and award-winning poet. But growing up, he could barely read. Ghunta’s family lived in a rural part of Western Jamaica. His mother often had to make tough choices about how to use their limited resources, including a decision to send his oldest sister to school.
When Ghunta finally went to school, he couldn’t catch up on his reading skills. Not only had he been kept home from school as a child, but he had no access to books. By the time he entered the sixth grade, he could spell his name, but he still couldn’t make out words or read with understanding.
When Ghunta was about 12, a young teacher decided to start a special reading program for struggling students. Ghunta was the first student to sign up. The teacher was incredibly kind to him. She did not ask anything of Ghunta, except that he worked hard and believed in himself.
Under her guidance, Ghunta’s reading skills finally started to improve. He started to feel more confident. “She had left me with the gift of literacy,” he said, “and with the value as a human being.” His life took a new direction.
He graduated from elementary school with a number of academic awards, including one for “most improved in reading”. He went on to college. Today, he is the author of two children’s books, about overcoming difficult experiences in childhood. He’s now working on his first full-length collection of poetry.
Ghunta said, “I would love her to see the significant impact that she has made on my life, and the ways in which I have carried this memory of her — the hope and the light — with me and how it continues to be a source of joy.”
24.What caused Ghunta’s poor reading ability
A.Limited family resources. B.Early disinterest in reading.
C.Lacking enough attention. D.Terrible memory.
25.Who inspired Ghunta greatly in his study
A.His mother. B.His sister.

A recent study from the University of Guelph in Canada has revealed a surprising discovery about common eastern bumblebees (大黄蜂): These insects can survive underwater for up to a week. This finding, published in the journal Biology Letters, came about due to an experimental error when researchers placed hibernating (冬眠的) queen bumblebees in water and found them alive days later. The discovery has impressed scientists. particularly because bumblebees are land-based creatures not typically associated with water environments.
Nigel Raine, a professor in the school of environmental sciences at the university and the study’s lead author, expressed his astonishment at the results. To further explore this phenomenon, Raine and his team conducted an experiment involving 143 hibernating queen bumblebees. They discovered that those placed underwater for up to seven days had similar survival rates to those not, indicating that the bees’ ability to survive such conditions may be more common than previously thought.
The research underlines the strength of bumblebees during their hibernation period. a critical phase in their life cycle that has remained largely unexplored. Queen bumblebees typically hibernate alone in small holes during the cold months, which are believed to protect them from flooding. However, this study reveals that these bees possess an unexpected adaptation, allowing them to survive even in flooded conditions.
Given these findings, one possible explanation for their survival is diapause, a state of suspended growth and reproduction characterized by reduced oxygen intake. During this state. bumblebees may close their spiracles (气孔) to prevent water from entering their bodies, and they might also breathe through their skin. This energy-saving mode is likely a key factor in their ability to survive beneath the water.
Raine emphasized the importance of understanding these mechanisms, as it could have significant implications for the study of wild insects that help with plant reproduction, which are crucial for food security and ecosystem health, His team’s research will aim to determine whether hibernating queens can survive even longer periods underwater and if similar strength exists in other bee species.
28.What do we know about the finding
A.It matched prior beliefs. B.It concerned sea insects.
C.It was fully anticipated. D.It was made by accident.
29.What can be inferred about bumblebees from paragraph 3
A.They hibernate in groups for protection. B.They are always protected from flooding.
C.They have a hidden adaptation mechanism. D.They reproduce better in flooded conditions.
30.What may Nigel Raine do in the future
A.Secure research patents. B.Prioritize dietary security.
C.Conduct further research. D.Raise ecological awareness.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text

More than 100 horses and riders leaped the flames of roaring bonfires on Thursday in a small Spanish town in a centuries-old festival that has raised the anger of animal rights activists.
Smoke and flames filled the night in San Bartolome de Pinares, a central Spanish town of some 600 inhabitants, in the annual festival held on Thursday, the eve of Saint Anthony’s Day for the patron saint (守护神) of animals. One by one, horses and their riders jumped the flames in the narrow, paved streets of the town.
“No one knows how old the tradition is. My grandfather told me that his great-grandfather took part,” said 34-year-old Die-go Martin. “They say it could be 300 or 400 years old.”
The town is fiercely attached to the festival, despite opposition from animal rights groups concerned about the safety of the horses. Just a few days earlier, Spain’s National Association for the Welfare of Animals asked the town’s people not to let their horses leap over the fires, apparently in vain.
“There was an illness that killed all the horses in the town. Since then, we have done this to purify them to keep away any evil by asking for the protection of the saint,” explained 20-year-old Libertad Gomez, who has been taking part for seven years. “More than a tradition, for us it is a feeling. It is something you like almost since you were born,” said Libertad, who rode with dozens of others through the streets.
Indeed, the smoke is so thick that it affects the horse and rider as they leap the fires. That does not stop youngsters from taking part in the tradition, such as 10-year-old Alejandro Nunez, who jumped for the second year running on a white horse. “I really like it. At first, it was a bit scary but that goes,” he said, equipped with a helmet and a checkered scarf to protect him from the smoke.
32.What can we learn by reading the passage
A.Horses leap fires in an ancient Spanish festival.
B.A new festival has been introduced to Spain.
C.The festival is not popular among youngsters.
D.Horses get injured over the burning flames.
33.According to Libertad Gomez, what is true
A.The festival came into being less than 300 years ago.
B.His grandfather took great interest in the activity.
C.The activity helps the horses to be away from diseases.
D.The evil would take the horses away during the leaps.
34.When Alejandro Nunez first leaped the fires, how does he feel
A.He felt too excited to express himself.
B.He was a bit frightened for the first time.
C.He was offered a helmet and a scarf.
D.He became worried about his horse.
35.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Riding horses to leap fires can be dangerous.
B.The riders are easy to fall into the burning fires.
C.All the people support riding horses to leap fires.
D.The activity will be done away with one day.

Every new exercise routine comes a new risk of injury, whether it’s injuring a muscle from lifting or developing knee pain from running. Some people are unwilling to exercise for fear of injury. 36 There are estimated 8.6 million sports-related injuries each year in America. However, with the right methods, you can develop a well-rounded exercise routine, one that enlarges the benefits while reducing the risk of injury.
37 One very common issue in runners is knee pain, which is often called “runner’s knee.” To prevent it, for some people, it’s useful to warm up before running. Another common overuse injury among runners is stress fractures (骨折). This often happens when a runner tries to add too many miles too quickly, without taking enough rest days.
Both of these injuries tend to happen because runners did something out of the ordinary compared to what they were trained to do. Take rest days, build up your mileage (里程) gradually and combine regular strength training. 38
As with other injuries, the risk increases toward the end of a workout. It’s very essential to listen to your body. 39 When it comes to making progress in a workout routine, continuous exercise with a gradual progression is strongly recommended.
Exercise can put someone at risk of injury. 40 There should be a balance between pushing yourself to get better and pushing yourself toward an injury. So encourage yourself to do something that you are confident in doing.
A.These fears are based on facts.
B.Turn to a mixture of sports doctors.
C.This type of exercise can increase the risk of injury.
D.Therefore, the risk of hurting yourself will decrease.
E.But not exercising puts someone at risk of poor health.
F.Adjust in time, especially when tiredness starts to affect your form.
G.Runners may come across two main sorts of injuries related to overuse.

Every girl dreams and Jenny Green is no exception. She loved music and movement of ballet and read dozens of books on how to be a ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) but she was a shy child and avoided the spotlight.
When she was 13, she joined the training team, a dance line at her school in San Pedro, California. One day, Jenny’s coach suggested she attend a free ballet class at the Boys & Girls Club, where she often went after school. At first, Jenny felt out of place in the class. She was older than most of the students. And instead of the tights, slippers, and leotards (训练服) the other girls wore, Jenny had on a T-shirt, baggy shorts, and sweat socks.
Over time, however, she began to enjoy the lessons. She discovered that her body — especially her long legs and strong, flexible muscles — was just right for ballet. She spent most days twisting, twirling, and leaping. When she wasn’t performing, she was practicing. When she wasn’t practicing, she was stretching. She took classes almost every day and hoped one day her dream would come true.
One day she saw an advertisement that a famous ballerina troupe (剧团) would be performing in her hometown. Her thoughts ran wild, “I must meet up with the leader of the troupe and show her my skills,” she murmured to herself. She dressed herself in her ballerina costume and managed to escape the guards and hid in the dressing room. To her luck the leader entered and she shyly knocked at the door. She bravely approached her and handed her a bunch of red roses.
The leader observed her action as she told her the dream. “Alright, you dance and I will give you my opinions.” But half way through the dance she stopped her and said, “I’m sorry you’re not good enough!”

On hearing this, Jenny ran as fast as her legs could carry her and was ashamed.

The history of plastic is no longer than you might expect. In fact, the first man-made plastic was made over a hundred years ago. It was discovered both by an Englishman and an American in the same year, but it was the American who first developed it on a large scale during the 1860s.
Everybody was excited by this new material because it was so cheap. Poor workers were able to buy plastic collars. These plastic collars were hard and uncomfortable, but they were easy to wash. The poor workers could clean them every evening with just soap and water. Poor mothers, who had not been able to afford toys for their children, were now able to buy inexpensive ones made of plastic.
However, plastic has one serious fault. Some kinds of plastic can catch fire very easily, and when they do, a poisonous gas is produced. What’s worse, plastic takes a very long time to break down so it causes serious pollution. We now use the term “white pollution” to refer to plastic pollution.

31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“A recent study from the University of Guelph in Canada has revealed a surprising discovery about common eastern bumblebees (大黄蜂): These insects can survive underwater for up to a week. This finding, published in the journal Biology Letters, came about due to an experimental error when researchers placed hibernating (冬眠的) queen bumblebees in water and found them alive days later. The discovery has impressed scientists. particularly because bumblebees are land-based creatures not typically associated with water environments.(加拿大圭尔夫大学最近的一项研究揭示了一个关于普通东部大黄蜂的惊人发现:这些昆虫可以在水下存活长达一周。这一发现发表在《生物学快报》杂志上,是由于一个实验错误造成的,当时研究人员将冬眠的大黄蜂皇后放在水中,几天后发现它们还活着。这一发现给科学家们留下了深刻印象。特别是因为大黄蜂是陆生生物,通常与水环境无关)”以及通读全文可知,文章的主要内容集中在大黄蜂在水下生存的发现及其意义,因此D项“Bumblebee Survival Underwater(大黄蜂在水下生存)”是最合适的标题。故选D项。

On hearing this, Jenny ran as fast as her legs could carry her and was ashamed. She felt that all her efforts were in vain. Tears welled up in her eyes as she rushed out. But instead of giving up, she practiced even harder. She knew that she still had a long way to go. She took every class seriously, analyzing every movement and learning from every mistake. She was determined to prove that she could be a good ballerina one day. She practiced early in the morning and late at night, her body becoming more and more flexible and her skills improving significantly.
A year later, she heard that the same ballet troupe was performing in her town again. This time, she was much more confident. She managed to get a chance to perform in front of the troupe leader again. She danced gracefully and passionately. After the performance, the leader looked at her with admiration and said, “You’ve improved a great deal. I’m glad to invite you to join our troupe.” Jenny’s dream finally came true.
