It's not quite often when we see architects devoted to creating buildings as more than art, expression,or technological creation.Shigeru Ban is one of the most clever architects who knows how to recognize pressing problems and come up with the best solutions for them.
Shigeru Ban is a Japanese architect born in Tokyo in 1957,he founded Shigeru Ban Architects in 1985 and has since then expanded branches from Tokyo to New York and Paris. His career has spanned over various architectural fields from commercial spaces to museums, but his disaster relief(救灾)work shines the most.
He set a new standard for socially-aware and emergent(紧急的)architecture and paved the way for teaching the whole world how building skills can help in times of crises. His unique method earned him the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2014,where he was honored for his devotion to designing shelters for disaster-stricken areas. He is highly praised for showing how architecture can be a tool for positive social change, particularly in his attention to using materials and attending to social needs.
In a 2017 interview,Shigeru Ban was asked about what guided him towards being involved with disaster relief architecture. His replies detailed that there seemed to be a lack of social responsibility among architects in Japan regarding this matter,so he felt the urge to take action. After the Kobe earthquake in 1995,Ban saw the poor living conditions related to evacuation centers and wanted to make a change with architecture.
Following this event,he established the Voluntary Architects'Network(VAN)to provide support to disaster-affected areas worldwide. When asked whether his initiatives were inspired by Japan's continuous risk for earthquakes and volcano eruptions,he explained that his motivation(动力)comes from a desire to improve living conditions for disaster victims rather than Japan's geographic risks. He's a man with a skill for identifying problems and finding solutions.

According to data from the CDC,more Americans are developing hearing problems earlier in life, yet equipment and treatments nowadays can be costly, making them difficult to reach.
The University of Cincinnati's Daniel Sun,MD,told WVXU's Cincinnati Edition that hearing loss can be thought of like a piano, with different interventions(干预)needed based on different situations."Hearing loss starts on the right side and slowly works itself toward the left side, toward the bass sounds,"said Sun,the Myles L.Pensak,MD,Endowed Professor in Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery.“So the very first things that can be detected are the very, very right hand side keys of the piano. And then finally it works itself more and more towards the middle and the left, and that's when it becomes more noticeable to ordinary people."
The FDA(Food and Drug Administration)recently authorized(批准)new software that can change Apple's AirPods Pro 2 into inexpensive hearing aids.Sun said it's a great public health effort to provide hearing aids to more people that need them, but it is not a one-size- fits-all solution.
“Over-the-counter (非处方的)hearing aids are only supported for people with mild to moderate hearing loss of a specific type,so it's still important to keep in mind to check with an audiologist or a physician if the hearing loss is more serious,"Sun said."If this is happening at a younger age,get an actual hearing test to determine what may actually be going on.”
Over-the-counter hearing aids,or those built into AirPods and other headphones, can be thought of like reader glasses you can buy at the drug store without a prescription(处方),but having different hearing between two ears may be a sign you need a formal hearing test from an expert.
28.Why does the author mention piano keys
A.To stress the importance of piano keys.
B.To introduce music treatment for hearing loss.
C.To explain the process of hearing becoming worse.
D.To show the effects hearing has on piano performances. 29.What is Daniel Sun's opinion about new software
A.It is a partial solution for hearing aids. B.It makes hearing aids more expensive. C.It is only suitable for mild hearing loss.
D.It is unnecessary for effective hearing treatments.
【英语 第4页(共8页)】
30.What does Daniel Sun suggest people do for serious hearing loss
A.Use AirPods as hearing aids.
B.Turn to a hearing expert for help. C.Buy over-the-counter hearing aids.
D.Totally ignore and pay no attention to it. 31.Where is this text probably taken from
A.A textbook. B.An exam paper.
C.A science fiction. D.A health magazine.

When it comes to dealing with exam stress, the benefit of a"smart drug"that could help you focus, learn and think faster is very attractive. At least this is what current trends on university campuses suggest.Just as you might drink a cup of coffee to help you stay energetic,an increasing number of students are turning to prescription drugs to improve school performance.
So-called“smart drugs”are being used off-label for their obvious cognitive(认知的) strengthening effects.Cognition is the way in which we gain, process and store information, so the drugs are promising better memorization and attention in normal, healthy people. Popular smart drugs on the market include methylphenidate and amphetamine, which are normally used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(注意力不集中症).In recent years, another drug called modafinil has emerged as the new favourite among college students.
There is evidence to suggest that modafinil improves cognitive processes such as learning and working memory...at least on certain laboratory tasks. One study found that modafinil improved cognitive task performance in doctors who suffered from poor sleep.Another study showed that even in healthy volunteers without such concern, modafinil improved planning and accuracy on certain cognitive tasks.
So maybe smart drugs really do make you smarter.Unfortunately,it's not actually that simple.Despite some positive findings,a lot of studies find no effects of enhancers(增强剂) in healthy subjects. For instance, although some studies suggest some strengthening effects in well-rested subjects, modafinil mostly shows such effect in cases of poor sleep. In addition, the cognitive strengthening effects of smart drugs often depend on baseline performance. So while drugs strengthen performance in people with low baseline cognitive abilities, they often make performance worse in those who are already at the best state.
In fact, taking a smart pill is probably no more effective than exercising or getting a good night's sleep. So the next time you have a desire to reach for some pills, maybe a good night's sleep is all you really need.
32.Which of the following is NOT a common use of smart drugs
A.To manage poor mental health conditions.
B.To improve focus and performance at school.
C.To treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
D.To strengthen cognitive processes like memory. 33.How does the author develop paragraph 3
A.By making a comparison. B.By listing numbers.
C.By stating opinions. D.By giving examples.
34.What can we learn from last two paragraphs
A.Smart drugs are not better than natural methods like sleep. B.Smart drugs can only be used for a short period of time.
C.Smart drugs show no advantages in well-rested people.
D.Smart drugs are useful for people with good performance.
【英语 第5页(共8页)】
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Can Smart Drugs Improve Cognition

What If Your Roommate Has a Mental Health Condition

Ask How You Can Be Supportive
37 If they say they need peace and quiet first thing in the morning,do your best to honor that request.Don't assume you understand how they feel.I they'd like to talk, provide a listening ear.
Talk Face-to-Face
First and foremost, don't try to solve problems in an email or through texting. It's too easy to misunderstand what someone means when you can't hear their tone of voice or see their body language. 38 Not only are people more emboldened to be nasty on social media, but the whole world also becomes privy to your private business.Talking face-to-face is a must.
39
Speking about your feclngs ather atacking the other perso s one of the most important ways to handle conflict with anyone.Instead of saying,“You play loud music late at night,"you might say,“I have a hard time sleeping when music's coming from your room after 11 o'clock."When you speak about your own feelings and experiences, your roommate won't be triggered to defend themselves.
If All Else Fails,Move
Certain situations aren't fixable. If you've expressed your concerns to your roommate, made concessions yourself, and nothing is changing, you may need to move to a different room or look for a new roommate or a new apartment. 40
A.Practice Self-Care.
B.Use"I"Statements.
C.Remember:your mental health needs to come first.
D.In cases like these, greater attention and patience are required.
E.Don't think of how you're going to prove them wrong while they're speaking.
F.And under no conditions should you ever try to deal with disagreement on social media. G.Rather than tell your roommate what you think they should do,ask how you can be of help.

One possible version: Dear David,
Learning that you show enormous interest in Chinese characters,I'm writing to give you a brief introduction to the Chinese writing system, which might help you gain a glimpse into the rich Chinese culture.
The Chinese writing system dates back over 5000 years and has evolved alongside the development of our culture, transforming from an originally picture-based language carved on bones to the current state you see now, evolving from Oracle Bone Script to today's Regular Script. As a bridge for cultural exchanges,Chinese characters have promoted mutual understanding between countries as China performs an increasingly influential role in global affairs. This is bound to boost cross-cultural integration and open up new horizons.
Wish you a fruitful exploration of Chinese culture.
Yours,
Li Hua

that I had arrived safely. After that,I headed towards the exit to meet my friends. M:So did you have a good time in Harbin
W:Yeah.I enjoyed a lot of outdoor snow and ice activities there.I'm still excited just thinking about them!
