At the age of 60 Chen Lie suffered a stroke (中风). As part of her recovery, she had to relearn how to do everything with her left hand, resulting in much annoyance. One day, for the first time in her life, she picked up one of her grandchild’s paintbrushes and just started putting color on the paper.
Happiness dawned on Chen as she suddenly could paint lovely natural scenery. “I had nothing else to do, so I just picked up the paintbrush and had a try,” Chen said.
After her stroke, Chen completed in-patient therapy (治疗) in Texas. Then she moved to New York to enroll in an experimental robotic-assisted therapy program. With the robotic arm, she could complete more tasks that were impossible before. “Every time I recovered something, I would tell the good news to the program members,” Chen said. “They thought it was a wonder that I could do something like painting.”
Chen has completed about 500 paintings to date. During the month of May, which is National Stroke Awareness Month, she was painting one every day and posting a picture of it on her Facebook page, Stroke of Hope, to help raise awareness.
“I often read about how to paint,” said Chen. “I’ve gained a lot of knowledge, so besides the hand painting, the brain keeps thinking. That’s good for stroke patients to keep the brain working.” Chen’s daughter Liana said, “It’s nice to see Mom doing something she loves.”
Stroke Awareness Oregon had contacted the family to see if it was possible to include some of her paintings in an auction (拍卖) to raise money for awareness and rapid response programs for stroke patients in the state. “They go to a good cause, which is what Mom wants to achieve with stroke of Hope— really putting the word out there that it’s not over once you have a stroke,” said Liana.

C. Her determination to overcome illness D. Her wish to be a well-known artist.
57. What is Paragraph 3 intended to tell us

Although computer technology is often necessary today, using a pen or pencil activates more areas of your brain than a keyboard does. You can potentially remember more by handwriting, according to a new study.
The potential benefits of handwriting for memory have been debated for some time. The new study set out to answer one question: How does handwriting compare to using a keyboard when it comes to remembering new information
In total 24 participants took part. Researchers asked each of them to write with a pen and then each was also asked to type on a keyboard. While performing these tasks, each volunteer wore a cap that held electrodes (电极) next to their head. It looked somewhat like a hair net fitted with 256 sensors. Those sensors recorded the participants’ brainwaves. The electrodes noted which parts of the brain turned on during each task. And they showed that writing turned on memory areas in the brain while typing didn’t.
Audrey van der Meer, the new study’s leader, says this suggests that when we write by hand, we remember better. “This is because writing involves complex movements that activate more areas of the brain. The increased brain activity gives the brain more ‘hooks’ to hang your memories on.” she explains. Van der Meer also points out that writing by hand is related to visual notetaking. “Rather than typing blindly, the visual notetaker has to think about what is important to write down. Then, key words can be interlinked by boxes, arrows and small drawings,” she adds.
This study does not recommend banning digital devices. In fact, its authors point out, computers and other devices with keyboards have become necessary in modern society. Keyboarding can especially benefit those with certain special needs (such as if they have trouble using their hands) and typing beats writing when it comes to speed, they add.
61. Why were participants asked to wear caps in the study
A. To record their brainwaves. B. To inform them of their tasks.
C. To allow them to focus on writing. D. To protect their heads like hair nets.
62. What does Audrey van der Meer try to explain
A. Why the brain works when it comes to learning. B. Why small drawings are connected to memory.
C. Why handwriting is more complex than typing. D. Why key words are helpful to visual notetaking.
63. What is the meaning of the underlined part in Paragraph 4
A. helps you to remember more details. B. reminds you to have regular reviews.
C. tags your memories for further recalling. D. eases your tension of memorizing things.
64. What is the study’s authors’ view on typing
A. It relieves people’s hands. B. It remains significant and helpful.
C. It is not worth recommending. D. It is more challenging than writing.
65. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. How Can You Remember New Information B. Handwriting Benefits Health in the Long Run
C. Should Typing Take the Place of Handwriting D. Handwriting Is Better for Memory Than Typing

Roy Austin first experienced an African adventure in 2018. All he wanted to do was get close to some African wildlife. Although Roy did realize this dream, he found something even more meaningful in Africa.
Roy spent time in many countries throughout East Africa. He was most interested in the people of rural(农村的) Kenya, especially people of the Amboseli Primary School. During his stay, Roy became friends with several students and teachers at the school. He was deeply touched by their positive attitude, even though it was hard for them to get books and other school supplies. Even the lack of school buildings was a huge challenge.
In rural Kenya, school buildings are not built by the government. Students, their parents, and teachers find materials and build the schools themselves, or they have to raise money to get builders’ help. Without schools, buildings like libraries and classrooms are just dreams. The students and teachers want to have a library or at least some books to read.
After returning home to South Carolina in the USA, the Kenyan students’ yearning for something as seemingly “basic” as books to read still worried Roy. He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So he started the organization Libraries for Kids International.
Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania. To keep costs down, he uses the post office to send the books instead of a carrier like FedEx. The organization has helped to supply these schools with much-needed books, which brought Roy much happiness. He plans to continue shipping books to Africa in the future.

Dear friends,
Nowadays, environmental problems are still a serious problem to solve in our city, which arouses much concern. So, it is our duty to protect the environment. To reach this, we should keep the following in mind.
First, walking to school is a good way to reduce pollution. Second, we should plant trees every spring to prevent the soil from being washed away. Third, it’s also important to recycle everything useful. We should keep our school clean by picking up any litter. Finally, remember to turn off the water taps after finishing washing and turn off the lights when leaving the classroom.
In a word, only when we form the good habit of environmental protection can we make a more beautiful city tomorrow. Every little contribution counts. Let’s take action from this very moment on.
Thank you!
