Fifteen years ago, I loved going to the gym, but family life and work commitments meant I was finding it hard to get there. With the help of my dad and uncle, I built my own gym in the garden. It's basically a beautified room with insulation(隔热) and electric(供电) and a small heater for the winter. We built a corner desk too, which was intended for my doing the paperwork for my small business. However, the desk served its real purpose when I started my writing journey two years ago.
I've always had stories going through my mind. I could be out jogging and I'd lose myself in thoughts in my head like movie scenes. Once seen, they stay in there. I have trouble keeping other kinds of information, but when it comes to story ideas, they can be memorized by me. I have many fresh ideas in my head waiting to be written. When I was younger, I wasn't brave enough to write. I didn't do well in school and I've spent most of my life in physical work, so the idea of becoming a writer felt laughable.
I now know there isn't a writer type; writers come in all forms. I still use the gym for its real purpose, but some of the equipment has been replaced by books and a small bed for the time when I want to relax and read. I like to have my desk looking colorful—some might say messy. My love for sport is clear to see, with photos around of my favorite boxers and the football team I follow. On the other hand, having my own writing room is important. Without it, I wouldn't be where I am now on my writing journey. It's far from charming, but it is mine. It's my happy place.
24. Who helped the author build the gym
A. His friend and neighbour. B. His coach and cousin.
C. His father and uncle. D. His workmate and brother.
25. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 2
A. He got on well with his study at school.
B. He wrote a number of stories as a child.
C. He has a lot in his head waiting to be written.
D. He is good at remembering all sorts of information.
26. What sports team is the author a fan of
A. A baseball team. B. A volleyball team.
C. A basketball team. D. A football team.
27. What is the author's gym mainly used for now
A. Writing and fitness.
B. Teaching and office work.
C. Storing clothes and sleeping.
D. Relaxation and entertainment.

Insect numbers have dropped by half in some parts of the world due to climate change and intensive agriculture, a study has found. Preserving habitats(栖息地) for nature could help ensure vital insects thrive(兴旺).
Lead researcher, Dr. Charlie Outhwaite, said losing insect populations could be harmful not only to the natural environment, but also to human health and food security, particularly with loss of pollinators (传粉者). “Our findings highlight the urgency of actions to preserve natural habitats, slow the expansion of high-intensity agriculture, and cut emissions to reduce climate change,” she added.
In the latest study, the researchers pulled together data on the range and number of nearly 20,000 insect species, including bees, ants, butterflies, grasshoppers and dragonflies, at about 6,000 different locations. In areas with high-intensity agriculture and significant warming, insect numbers have dropped by 49% and the number of different species by 27%, compared with relatively untouched places that have so far avoided the severest effects of climate change, according to the research, published in Nature.
But the researchers said that setting aside areas of land for nature could create a place for insects, which need shade to survive in hot weather. “Careful management of agricultural areas, such as preserving natural habitats near farmland, may help ensure that vital insects can still thrive,” said Dr. Tim Newbold.
Study researcher Peter McCann added, “We need to acknowledge how important insects are for the environment as a whole, and for human health and well-being, in order to address the threats we pose to them before many species are lost forever.”
28. What has caused the fall of insect numbers
A. Climate change and farming.
B. Planting more and more trees.
C. Growing more and more grass.
D. People's hunting insects thoughtlessly.
29. How could losing insect populations have a bad influence
①Being bad for people's health
②Being harmful to industrial products
③Having a bad effect on food security
④Doing harm to the natural environment
⑤Having a bad influence on water quality
A. ②④⑤ B. ③④⑤ C. ①②③ D. ①③④
30. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. The results of the study.
B. The problems with the study.
C. What influences insects may have.
D. What kinds of insects were included.
31. Why should areas of land for nature be set aside according to Dr. Tim Newbold
A. To supply fresh air. B. To provide shade.
C. To provide earth. D. To supply energy.

After spending 136 days at the Shenzhen Wildlife Rescue Center, a young leopard cat cub hesitated a moment, smelling the air outside the door of its portable cage, before running into the woods of Wutong Mountain in Guangdong province on Feb 1.
On Sept 18, the newborn leopard cat, which is under second-class State protection, was found by a park worker in the city who'd noticed it struggling on its own. After a night of observation, waiting for its mother to return, the animal workers from the rescue center decided to take it in.
At about a week old and still not teething, the 17-centimeter-long, 180-gram cub was the smallest leopard cat rescued by the center. “The cub was feeble and with low immunity, and we had to put it in an incubator(保育箱),” said Zheng Suqun, a vet at the center. “We fed it on goat milk every two hours.” Some 20 days later, the cub was growing healthily and had been moved out of the incubator, and meat was added to its diet.
On Dec 2, it was moved to a “wildness cage” where tree branches were positioned to imitate a wild environment. “We tried not to make contact with the cub except for feeding, as we didn't want it to develop any attachment(依恋) to or dependence on humans,” Zheng said.
By the end of December, the cub had begun a more comprehensive training period as it began to learn to hunt. “When it was able to catch small, live animals such as chickens, mice and fish, and could pay enough attention to avoid risks, we could call its wildness training a success,” said Zeng Zhiliao, a senior vet at the center, who said that the leopard cat was meeting the standards to be set free.
Zheng said, “We fed it a little more than usual before setting it free so that it could get through some time if it is unable to catch food at once.” “I'm relieved and relaxed,” she said as she watched the leopard cat return to the wild. “We've raised it well and made it able to live, have a habitat and hopefully procreate(繁育), and that's nice enough.”
32. What does the underlined word “feeble” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Fat. B. Weak. C. Lovely. D. Active.
33. Why did the staff try not to contact the leopard cat according to Paragraph 4
A. To want it to develop some dependence on humans.
B. To allow it to feed goat milk to itself freely.
C. To develop its skill of living independently.
D. To let it have a good rest most of the time.
34. When could the cub be set free and live in the wild
A. After it could recognize small, live animals.
B. After it could find its way back to the wildness cage.
C. After it could have enough meat and milk at one time.
D. After it could get food on its own and escape from dangers.
35. Which can serve as the best title for the news report
A. Rescued leopard cat returned to wild habitat
B. Rescued leopard learn to hunt very small animals
C. Young leopard found in woods of Wutong Mountain

Earlier in the day I had prepared for the unlikely event of a flood. We are about a third of a mile from the banks of the Ahr River. It had been raining very hard that week and the government had sent out a flood warning, though not for where I was. Still, I'd placed sandbags on the floor outside my garden door and put electronic products on the tables. “Silly man!” My friends, who came to see me now 82 then, laughed at me for doing that, but I thought I should not postpone 83 (make) preparations for a flood. I looked around for anything that I could use to keep it open. There in the corner was a coat rack(衣帽架). I took it and, once again, opened the door, throwing the coat rack between the door and the frame(门框) to keep the door from shutting. That enabled me 89 (get) out of the basement.
I jumped onto the stairs and ran outside. I stood there in the darkness, wet through. The street scenes were completely different. The neighborhood was 90 (visible) flooded with water!

One possible version:
Dear Bill,
How are you doing recently Glad to receive your email asking about how to get on well with others. As we all know, interpersonal communication is an ability that everyone should have. Here are my suggestions.
First of all, we should respect others. Everyone has his or her own ideas and their own way to do things, so we should understand each other. Besides, it is important for us to communicate with each other and share our happiness and sadness. What's more, we should be kind to others and offer necessary help to those who are in trouble. In my opinion, we should treat others in an honest way.
Only in this way can we get along well with each other and feel happy. Hope that my advice above can benefit you a lot.
Yours,
Li Hua
