Ye Jiaying, a famous scholar, teacher and poet, passed away on November 24, 2024, in Tianjin at the age of 100. She spent her life spreading Chinese poetry and inspired many people around the world.
After graduating from university, Ye realized her childhood dream and taught Chinese poems in famous universities. She used western theories to make traditional poetry more understandable for readers around the world. Till today, she remains the only scholar of classical Chinese literature (中国古典文学) in the Royal Society (皇家学会) of Canada. Besides her success, life was never easy for Ye. Spending half of her life in the time of war, she had to move around and only managed to return to China in her 80s. Through challenges, she found comfort in poetry.
In a documentary about her, she describes her feeling for Chinese poetry as “chī xīn”, which means a deep obsessiveness. She considered poetry as a lifestyle rather than an art. Its power helped her forget the pain she had. In return, she spent her life teaching and spreading poetry. Towards the end of her life, she sold her houses and gave away all the money to Nankai University to support poetry education in China.
Ye loved to share a story about some lotus seeds (莲子) that were found in a Han Dynasty Tomb (汉墓) . After scholars discovered them and took care of them, it turned out that they were not dead. The seeds started to grow leaves and finally, bloomed into beautiful flowers.
Ye wrote a poem about these seeds:
The lotus seeds has a heart that will never die.
Life grows old easily but dreams are till alive.
A thousand springs wait for the flowers to arrive.

The first half of the year 2024 has seen a lot of new products, such as smart phones with new CPUs and self-driving cars. We, however, should know that these products aren’t inventions with new technology. They are just things using old technology which appeared long ago: the first CPU was produced in the 1960s and even the technology of self-driving is over 50 years old. It’s time for us to face the cold fact that the creation of new technology is coming to a halt (停滞).
In fact, there hasn’t been much new human technology since the 1980s. And the reason is simple: the easy creations have already been made, and now the hard ones are still on the way. For example, in the early 19th century, Samul Morse invented the telegram (电报) on his own within weeks. However, when it comes to the 20th century, a scientific breakthrough (突破) like nuclear power plants (核电站) , took more top scientists many years to make. That leads to the slowing-down and even the halt of new technological creations.
★ Two serious problems could be waiting for us. One is that the human population may be forced to stop growing, because limited (有限的) land on the earth can only produce limited food. Unless new technology appears to help double the food production, we can’t afford (负担得起) the growth of the population.
Another is that traveling freely among the stars may never come true. As we know, this kind of travel needs 85% of light speed or higher. With our present technology, rockets today can only fly at 1. 5% of light speed, which stops us from exploring the outer space.
So how can we turn this dark and hopeless future into a bright one Talented young inventors are using AI to put the knowledge of countless scientists together. Brave researchers on biology are working on super brains, which may help humans have much better memories and thinking abilities. Actually, we all should be responsible for the scientific breakthrough. Only through the efforts of all us humans can we have a bright future.
61. How does the writer show it’s harder to make new creations now in Paragraph 2
A. By comparing facts. B. By listing numbers.
C. By telling stories. D. By asking questions.
62. Which is the best sentence to be put in the ★
A. Human population may be badly influenced by the halt.
B. The result of technological halt can be quite worrying.
C. Technological halt could have both good and bad results on us.
D. New technology will be brought to a bright future.
63. The underlined word “exploring” is closest in meaning to ________.
A. admiring B. studying C. explaining D. discovering
64. What can we infer from the passage
A. Smart phones are inventions with new technology.
B. Rockets in the future will be able to fly at 85% of light speed.
C. It’s young inventors’ duty to realize the science breakthrough.
D. AI and research on biology may lead new technology to appear.
65. What’s the best structure for this passage
A. B. C. D.

Only humans speak using words. But almost all animals can communicate in one way or another. Maybe you have heard about the way dogs bark in different ways ____________ (71) (give) warnings, to be friendly or to be playful. But did you know about infrasonic (次生的) communication used by elephants This is ____________ (72) it works:
Humans hear low sounds like the bass notes in music or thunder rumbling (隆隆声) in the sky. But we can’t hear sounds lower than those. However, animals such as elephants and hippos can. And what’s more, they use them to communicate with each other. This ____________ (73) (know) as infrasound (次声) .
Another amazing thing about infrasound is that it travels over several kilometers. Sounds which have a higher pitch, like the ones people can hear, don’t travel well through walls, ____________ (74) (leaf) , trees, and so on, which is why we can’t hear sounds from more than 100 meters away. But infrasound is much stronger, and things like grass and trees have no influence ____________ (75) it. Therefore, it can travel much ____________ (76) (far) . Elephants can hear infrasonic calls from four kilometers away.
There ____________ (77) (be) reports of people watching elephants feeding or resting and then the elephants suddenly all hurried away for no reason at all. They obviously (显然) ____________ (78) (hear) a warning call from distance, but the people didn’t hear a sound. In places like a zoo or wildlife park ____________ (79) you can get nearer to animals, it is a bit easier to sense when infrasonic sounds are made. When you stand near mother elephants with their babies in a zoo, you may notice as light rumbling in the air every few minutes —— not loud or strong, but ____________ (80) (clear) noticeable.
This is infrasonic communication —— the mother elephants “talking” to their babies!

A choice that I made
There is no doubt that it is important for us to make reasonable choices in life. One significant choice was joining the school's volunteer club in junior year. Initially hesitant due to concerns about time and studies, I decided to participate, seeking valuable experiences outside of textbooks.
Engaging in activities like cleaning parks and visiting nursing homes, I learned the importance of community service and developed better interpersonal skills. Contrary to my worries, my academic performance improved as I gained discipline and time management skills.
This experience profoundly influenced me, teaching me to embrace challenges and step out of my comfort zone. It has fostered my confidence in decision-making and instilled a positive attitude towards challenges. Becoming a volunteer reinforced my belief in the impact of action and has shaped me into a more responsible, compassionate person. This choice set me on a path of growth and meaningful contribution to society.
