As I walked around, I noticed that many of the buildings were almost in ruins(废墟). They needed repairing. Some of them were just piles of stone covered with weeds and other plants. I wondered why so many of the buildings were in ruins and why people here did not care about them. Also, in the future, there were no small buildings, only large buildings. Did this mean that they all lived together
And I then noticed something else. People here all looked the same. Men and women had nothing different in their looks. They all wore the same clothes. Children were just little versions(版本) of the adults. I wondered if this“sameness” was because the society was so peaceful that there was no need for family units.
By this time, I was completely alone. No one was interested in me any more. I looked around. There were a few large buildings: no farms, no agriculture(农业). Flowers growing and rivers flowing, the whole place was like a garden.
“These people in the future no longer have the problems that we have. They have solved the problems of food and illness,” I thought to myself. “Life must be very boring because there is no hardship. They have nothing to improve so they could only go backward. They become smaller and less clever. They are no longer interested in anything, which is why there are so many ruins. They do not want to take the trouble to repair anything. No art, no music, no books. They become weak and foolish because they do not need to be strong and intelligent.
I turned to go back to my machine. To my horror, it was not there! I ran in a hurry toward where it should be, but there was no sign of it.

Sounds from human activities spread across the ocean, causing much trouble to ocean animals. However, according to a new study, climate change might influence how sound travels through the water.
Human-caused climate change influences the ocean in many ways’ such as changing its temperature, salt level, and acidity(酸度). For example, when the water becomes more acidic, it can't take in certain sounds. So those sounds travel further, adding to the noise in some areas. However, this effect is not as big as other changes. Changes like temperature and salt level can affect how the ocean's different layers(层) mix. That, in turn, affects how sound travels.
Researchers used computers to model how those changes influence noise levels across the ocean. They compared the models of the world now to those of the world in about 70 years if climate change continues. In the North Atlantic, they saw an increase in sound levels in the upper 125 meters of the Ocean.
This was caused mostly by ice melting (融化) from Greenland, forming a cold layer of water near the Ocean's surface. When sound travels through water, it turns toward the coldest layer. This made sound waves get stuck in the cold top layer and spread further out across the water instead of traveling deeper. As a result, the sound became louder at this depth in the North Atlantic.
The rising noise levels in the Atlantic Ocean are worrying as they could disturb animals’ communication, hunting and travelling. Sharks already avoid loud ships, but with noise levels increasing everywhere, what will happen
53. What has a bigger effect on ocean noise
A. Sea level. B. Wind speed. C. Water temperature. D. Ocean acidity.
54. How did researchers carry out the study
A. By modeling changes in ocean noise. levels.
B. By finding areas with increasing ocean noise.
C. By doing field research in the North Atlantic.
D. By comparing today's ice size to that of the future.
55. What do we know about the sound traveling through water
A. It can be easily blocked by ice. B. It can get stuck by the seaside.
C. It goes towards the colder areas. D. It travels faster in the deep ocean.
56. What is the main idea of the text
A. Ice melting brings changes to water level.
B. Some ocean animals keep away from ships.
C. The more the ocean is acidic, the more sounds it takes in.
D. Climate change may influence the way sounds travel in the ocean.

Most crickets live in the warm places of the world, but one species— the lava cricket(熔岩蟋蟀) makes its home in one of the most unfriendly environments on the earth: volcanoes(火山), where the air is not clean and temperatures are unreasonably high. Shortly after a volcano breaks out, this kind of cricket suddenly appears. They are only found in Hawaii, where the locals have known about them for centuries, but researchers know very little about them.
Scientists find the lava cricket to be a really unusual example of a pioneer species. Pioneer species are the plants or animals which are the first to live in the places that were once full of life, but became poor because of sudden changes to the environment. Most pioneer species are simple plants like mosses that turn rock into the soil. This soil allows more plants to grow there and the place slowly begins to recover.
But where do lava crickets fit in this cycle And more importantly, how do they live where no other life exists(存在) These questions about lava crickets have caught researchers’ attention for many years. What's more, la va crickets have something different that makes them even less suitable to live in hard conditions. Since they don't have wings like other species of crickets, they can't move quickly from place to place. Their lack(缺少) of wings also makes it more difficult for males to chi rp or sing in order to find a female partner.
A scientific team from the University of Minnesota has set up a research station at one of Hawaii’ s most active volcanoes, Kilauca. The team will study the lava cricket to find out what makes it such a natural pioneer species. Whatever they discover, their research will certainly provide more interesting facts about the life cycle of these special crickets.
57. What makes lava crickets special
A. Their feeding habits. B. How they protect themselves.
C. Their living environment. D. How they communicate with each other.
58. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. What a pioneer species is. B. Where to find lava crickets.
C. How pioneer species are different. D. Why there's no research on pioneer species.
59. What is the writer's attitude (态度) towards the study from the University of Minnesota
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Curious D. Hopeful.
60. What is the main purpose of this text
A. To introduce a special pioneer species. B. To explain the challenges lava crickets are facing.
C. To show the importance of pioneer species D. To describe the differences between crickets.

When were chopsticks invented
Long long time ago, Chinese ancestors actually also used hands to eat. About 3,000 years ago during the Shang Dynasty, Chinese people started to use chopsticks. During the pre-Qin period, chopsticks were called“Jia”. 62 Because“Zhu” shares the same pronunciation with“stop” in Chinese, which is an unlucky word, by the Ming Dynasty, people began to call them“Kuai”, meaning“fast” in Chinese. 63
Who invented chopsticks
64 One is that Jiang Ziya was inspired to create chopsticks by a mythical bird. Another one is that Daji, the favorite consort(妃子) of the King Zhou of Shang, invented chopsticks in order to please the king. It is also said that Yu the Great, who founded the Xia Dynasty, used sticks to pick up hot food in order to save time to control floods. So, chopsticks came into being.
65
When eating with the elders, Chinese people usually let the elders take up chopsticks before anyone else. Besides, playing with chopsticks is thought to be a bad manner. It's also impolite to tap chopsticks on the edge of one's bowl, because in ancient China beggars often did it to attract attention.
A. What should we pay attention to when using chopsticks
B. What else should we know about the history of chopsticks
C.And in the Qin and Han dynasties, they were called“Zhu”.
D. This is the origin(起源) of today's name of Chinese chopsticks.
E. Chopsticks are thought to be one of the symbols of Chinese food culture.
F. The invention of chopsticks plays a very important role in Chinese history.
G. There is no exact historical record about the question, but there are many folk stories about it.

A set of photos of a boy carrying his tennis rackets in a bamboo basket has been widely spread on the Internet. Wang Fa, a 15-year-old boy, is a member of the
Va ethnic group(佤族) in Yunnan. After winning the under-14 title at the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour in Guangzhou a year ago, an audience member from Yunnan gave him the bamboo basket as a gift and the photos were taken.
“We always carry bamboo baskets when we work in the field. This is a typical farming tool of the Va ethnic group. I carried my rackets in this basket to honour my hometown,” Wang said after the match.
Before tennis, Wang was only an ordinary boy from a village. But in 2016, he was chosen by a local club as one of the first 10 local children to learn to play professional tennis. “I was nervous at the beginning because the outside world was so different from my home,” he said, adding that tennis has helped him make more friends and get a better education.
Over the past sx years; Wang, along with other players at the Yunnan Wild Elephants Tennis Club, has trained hard to improve his skills. He thinks his physical strength also has improved. Every day, they must swing a racket more than 7,000 times and run 9 kilometers.
“If I weren't chosen as a tennis player, I would still be helping out my family with farmwork back home,” Wang said. Wang's parents didn't want him to learn tennis at first because they couldn't afford it. But the tennis club taught him for free. His family were very grateful.
