Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He fell suddenly ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.
He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them.
One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed (瘫痪) her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.” At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “Thank you for helping me walk.”
My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctor, and my dad—who died just a few months after the little girl gave the picture—loved every single child in that hospital.
4.The author’s father worked at the local hospital to_________.
A. make his serious heart condition less serious B. keep himself occupied and pleased
C. realize his childhood dream D. earn money to pay for treatment
5.How did the author’s father help the paralyzed little girl

A. eventually became a unique painter
B. was sent home and never seen again
C. gradually recovered and walked

B. A sick person should not focus on his disease.
C. Volunteering is a worthwhile thing to do.
D. Love can sometimes bring great results.
C
Is creativity enhanced when people work alone or in a group And does the physical environment, like an open office or a quiet private room, affect creative thinking The answers are complex and depend on multiple factors, including individual personalities, the nature of the task, and the work atmosphere.
When it comes to brainstorming ideas for a new project, many assume that a group setting is best. However, research shows that while groups can generate a large number of ideas quickly, the quality of these ideas might not be as high as those produced by individuals working alone. In a group, people often conform to the opinions of others, leading to a phenomenon called “groupthink,” which stifles creativity.
The physical environment also plays a crucial role. An open office with constant distractions and noise can make it difficult for people to focus deeply on creative tasks. On the other hand, a completely isolated and quiet room might feel too stifling for some, causing stress and reducing creativity as well. The ideal environment seems to be a balance – a semi-private space with some background noise but not too much distraction.
Technology has also changed the way we approach creativity. With the rise of digital tools like online collaboration platforms and virtual reality brainstorming apps, people can now work together regardless of physical location. But these tools also bring new challenges, such as information overload and technical glitches, which can impede creative thinking.
In conclusion, fostering creativity requires a careful consideration of both the social and physical aspects of the work environment. There's no one-size-fits-all solution; instead, it's about finding the right combination that suits each individual and task.
8. What does the underlined phrase “stifles” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Encourages. B. Suppresses. C. Measures. D. Explains.
9. What is the problem with an open office according to the text
A. It lacks necessary equipment.
B. It has too much privacy.
C. It causes distractions.
D. It is too cold.
10. Why are digital tools not always beneficial for creativity
A. They are too expensive. B. They are difficult to learn.
C. They bring some negative impacts. D. They require a high-tech environment.
11. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph
A. Everyone should work alone.
B. We should always use the latest technology.
C. The best work environment is an open office.
D. We need to find a suitable environment for creativity.
D
In the effort to document endangered languages around the world, linguists and language enthusiasts have amassed a vast amount of data. Nowadays, most records of these languages are stored digitally, in the form of audio recordings, written transcripts, and online databases. While these resources are invaluable for preserving linguistic diversity, a recent Harvard study has revealed some limitations.
“With the advancement of technology, it's become easier for people to record and share samples of endangered languages,” said Dr. Laura Martinez, the lead researcher of the study and a professor of linguistics at Harvard University. “But the sheer volume of these observational records doesn't necessarily mean we have a comprehensive understanding of these languages.”
Using a global dataset of over 2 billion language samples, Martinez and her team examined how well these data represent the true complexity and diversity of endangered languages.
“We were particularly interested in the sampling biases,” said Martinez. “For example, speakers might be more likely to record formal or ceremonial language, leaving out everyday conversations and dialectal variations.”
The study found that the large number of digital records did not guarantee a complete picture. These data were often skewed towards certain regions, social groups, and language functions. This is because the people who contribute to these language databases are usually volunteers or researchers with specific interests, which can introduce biases.
So, what can be done with these imperfect datasets
“Plenty,” Martinez explained. “Language preservation apps can use our findings to guide users to record underrepresented aspects of the language, like local idioms and slang. They can also encourage collaboration between different speakers to fill in the gaps in our knowledge.”
12. What do we know about the current records of endangered languages
A. They are all handwritten.
B. They are mainly digital.
C. They are difficult to access.
D. They are only for academic use.
13. What is Dr. Martinez's study concerned with
A. Endangered animals. B. Physical artifacts.
C. Digital language records. D. Language learning apps.
14. What has caused the biases in the data, according to the study
A. Faulty recording equipment.
B. Poor translation skills.
C. Unsystematic sampling.
D. Inaccurate transcription.
15. What is Dr. Martinez's advice for language preservation apps
A. To limit the number of users.
B. To hire professional translators.
C. To provide language courses.
D. To direct users to record comprehensively.

Emily Harper sat at her desk, staring blankly at the math problems in front of her. Numbers and variables danced confusingly across the page, laughing at her every effort. At school, Emily was known for her artistic talents, but math had always been her weakness. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t make sense of it.
Her struggles only worsened in the 10th grade. The pressure to keep up with her classmates grew, and the poor grades shook her confidence. Then came Mr. Jenkins, her new math teacher, who sensed her frustration and offered to help her after class.
Emily was initially resistant; the idea of spending extra hours on a subject she hated seemed like a punishment. But — she unwillingly agreed, knowing something had to change.
Mr. Jenkins didn’t dive straight into problems. Instead, he asked about her interests. When Emily spoke passionately about her painting, he smiled. “Math is like art, Emily. It has patterns and beauty if you know where to look.”
Doubtful but inspired, Emily listened as he began to explain concepts through visual examples. He used colors and shapes, turning abstract numbers into something almost tangible (有形的). For the first time, math seemed less like a foreign language and more like a puzzle waiting to be solved.
However, progress was slow. Weeks passed by, minimal improvement, and Emily’s patience wore thin. A particularly difficult quiz left her in tears. She was convinced that she was sure to fail. Mr. Jenkins said, “Remember, Emily, every artist starts with a blank canvas (画布). Masterpieces aren’t created overnight.”
Encouraged by his firm belief, Emily pushed on. She began to see the connections between the steps, how each solution followed a logical path. Small victories in practice problems gave her some hope. Mr. Jenkins was always there, celebrating her successes, no matter how minor.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help.

15. D。 根据“Language preservation apps can use our findings to guide users to record underrepresented aspects of the language, like local idioms and slang.”
Graduation is around the corner, and so is the trip of your lifetime. There are many amazing reasons to plan your perfect graduation trip. You may want a break from school.(毕业即将来临,你一生中最难得的旅行也即将到来。 Or you may want some quality time away from your regular schedule with your friends.
Before you start your research on your trip,it will be a good idea to set your budget. You have to estimate the cost of flights, accommodations, food, taxi rides, gifts, and so on.(在你开始你的旅行研究之前,设定你的预算将是一个好主意。 故选A项。
18上文Adding a 10% buffer (缓冲) to each line item won't harm you in any way if you end up spending a little more.( 在每一行项目中增加10%的缓冲,即使你最终多花了一点,也不会对你造成任何伤害。)
Don't wait until the last moment to have your documents in order. Take enough time to work on all your proper forms and documents before hand.(不要等到最后一刻才整理好文件。

Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help. She found herself approaching math problems with a newfound curiosity instead of anxiety. The once confusing numbers and symbols began to become patterns she could understand. Mr. Jenkins continued to teach her in his unique way and Emily started to enjoy the challenge. When it’s time for her to take the mid-term test, her once hesitant hand moved steadily across the paper. The joy she felt when a solution clicked into place was something she had never expected to experience with math.
Emily’s heart raced when the results day arrived. She sat in the classroom, her hands trembling slightly as she received her test paper. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she saw the grade – a solid A. Tears of relief and happiness welled up in her eyes. She looked up at Mr. Jenkins, who stood at the back of the classroom, watching her with a proud smile. In that moment, Emily knew that she had not only conquered her fear of math but also discovered the power of perseverance.
