When you meet a strange Chinese character (汉字) what will you do Surely, the most dependable way is to look it up in Xinhua Dictionary.
Since its birth in 1953, Xinhua Dictionary has been a must-have book in schools across China. More than 567 million copies had been sold by 2016. So it was even knowed by the Guinness World Records as the “most popular dictionary” that year.
Small as the dictionary is, it means a lot to China. The dictionary was given the name Xinhua by the chief editor Wei Jiangong, and it carried the hope of a country reborn. In 1949, around 80% of China’s population wasn’t able to get education (教育). It was Xinhua Dictionary that had reduced the number to 52% by 1964. To make it easier for illiterate people to understand, the earliest copies had many pictures.
Thanks to Xinhua Dictionary, many Chinese got new chances in their life. Mo Yan, the 69-year-old Nobel Laureate, once mentioned the dictionary in his speech. He said that he was lucky to have a copy of the dictionary after dropping out from school. He learned most of Chinese characters from it, and that helped him write novels and enter a college later.
This important dictionary has also recorded the development of the language and society. It is revised (修订) every five to ten years. Recent copies have included many new explanations. The character “晒” (to dry something in the sun), for example, now has a second meaning: to share. In a way, the dictionary hasn’t just explained characters; it has reflected (反映) the way Chinese people think.

47. What does the underlined phrase “illiterate people” in Paragraph 3 mean

B. To offer advice on using the dictionary.
C. To show the influence of the dictionary.

Do you yawn (打哈欠) There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is easily spread from one to another. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.
Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.
In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.
Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.
49. Why do Olympic runners often yawn before a race
A. Because a yawn can let good things in.
B. Because they are too tired or too bored.
C. Because a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
D. Because a yawn can stretch the muscles in their faces.

In a small town in Belgium, lived a little boy called Nello. He lived with his grandpa in a small house.
Their life depended on Nello’s grandpa. Every morning, the old man would collect fresh milk from one house to another. He then had to load (装载) the milk on a cart (手推车) and sent it to the city. Growing up a little older, Nello would try to help his grandpa.
One day, on their way home, they saw a large dog lying on the side of the road. His grandpa checked the body of the dog, “The dog is seriously ill. ” With the words, his grandpa put the dog on the cart and the two went home. The kind-hearted boy took good care of him. Day by day, the dog became stronger and stronger.
“We should give him a name,” said Nello one day to his grandpa.
“How about Patrasche ” said Nello.
From then on, Patrasche became a member of the family.

“Out of the way, Patrasche, We’ll be late.” But Patrasche was simply staring at Grandpa and wagging (摇摆) his tail. “What does he want to do ” asked Nello.
His grandpa smiled and said, “I believe our Patrasche wants to help pull the cart.” Hearing Grandpas words, Patrasche was wagging his tail even harder.
Patrasche was thankful for the kindness he received, so he wanted to help. Grandpa tied a stripe on Patrasche, and he started to pull the cart right away.

阅读以下内容,从其后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,有两项是多余的。
Procrastination (拖延) has influenced human beings for centuries. It is the act of putting off a task. It prevents you from following what you start to do.
Why do we procrastinate? The best way to understand is to imagine that you have two selves:Present Self and Future Self. 56 The Future Self wants to be slim and fit, but the Present Self wants a hamburger.
57 You can make the rewards of taking action happen at once. You can bring future rewards into the present moment. For example, only listen to audio books you love while exercising or only watch your favourite show while doing tiring housework.
Secondly, make the results of procrastination more direct. Make yourself pay the costs of procrastination sooner in many ways. 58 However, if you promise to exercise with a friend, the cost of missing it becomes higher. 59
Another popular tool is to design your future actions. You can control your future eating habits by buying food in small packages rather than in the large size. 60
Lastly, use the two-minute rule to start a new habit. “When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to finish.” The idea is to make it as easy as possible to get started and then trust that power will carry you further into the task after you begin.
A. It means you have to break a promise. B. There are different ways to stop procrastinating. C. Spending more time on your hobbies can help you a lot. D. You can achieve a balance between the Present Self and the Future Self. E. If you exercise by yourself, missing once won’t influence your life much at all. F. You can stop wasting time on your phone by deleting games or social media apps. G. Researchers have found that the Present Self and the Future Self are seldom in agreement with each other.

Keeping dyeing (染色工艺) tradition alive
Known as “soft gold”, gambiered Canton gauze (香云纱) is the best silk fabric (布料) for qipao. It feels smooth and comfortable, easy to wash and dry, and is also good for people’s health.
Gambiered Canton gauze is the only silk fabric that’s still hand-dyed using natural plants in the world today. It gets its color from a yam (薯蓣) plant. The plant grows in Shunde, Guangdong. People call it shuliang.
The skill of dyeing gambiered Cantongauze has a history of more than 500 years. In 2008, it was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家非物质文化遗产).
A master’s story
Ouyang Yongze is an inheritor of the dyeing (染色) skill of Gambiered Canton gauze from Guangdong. The 50-year-old started learning the skill in 2017.
The dyeing includes 30 steps and is all done by hand with natural materials. “Shuliang, river mud, sunshine, and grass play important roles in the dyeing,” Ouyang told Teens.
To dye the fabric (布料), workers put it in yam juice and then let it dry on the grass. Then, they put river mud on it to help the yam react fully. After washing and drying again, the fabric turns black!
Mastering the dyeing skill is not easy. Ouyang had to try many times before he could get the right density of yam juice.
Passing on the craft is also challenging. It can be tiring to work under the sun for eight hours a day. Only a few people work in that line of work, and the skilled masters are getting older.
In light of this, Ouyang has worked hard to tie in other dyeing skills such as tie-dye and batikc (蜡染). He believes all these can make the traditional skill more alive and get more young people to learn the skill.

My favourite art form
Art is an important part of my life. My favourite art is making kites.
As a small kid, I had a big dream of flying. One day when I was five, my grandfather made me a bird kite. That made me really excited. When I held a line to let the bird kite fly into the sky, I had a feeling that my dream of flying came true. Since then, I have made it a rule to make a kite every spring. Now my study is full of colourful kites.
As I’m growing older, like a kite, I will leave my parents. But I know the line is always in my parents’ hand. They will watch me as I fly higher and farther.
